available in the area will be maximized. Additional turn lanes will be added to both the north and southbound exit ramps as a way to accommodate large amounts of traffic. Essentially, the project will work to reduce congestion at the exit during the busier hours of the day and minimize accidents that are currently frequent in the area. It is now tentatively scheduled to be completed around 2026, but the timeline is not set in stone.

For many, staying healthy and building strength can seem like a hard goal; LHS junior Ruby Bearden, on the other hand, has made these components a part of her lifestyle. She chooses these components not so much as a goal but as a lifestyle.

“The project will result in the Cliff Avenue/41st Street intersection being separated from the interchange and relocated to the north,” said Gramm.

“The project will result in the Cliff Avenue/41st Street

As it stands currently, the offramp of I-229 exits directly into an already crowded intersection. In hopes of easing the flow of traffic, construction will shift 41st Street north, closer to LHS, and avoid the head-on clash of traffic streams. The removal of a house along Cliff Avenue as a way to create space serves as an example of an earlier step taken in this process.

So, what will this construction mean for LHS students? According to Gramm, a realignment of 41st Street will also create a means of traffic flow directly into the high school’s parking lot. The installation of a traffic signal and the widening of Cliff Avenue will also create new turn lanes. A right turn lane directly into the parking lot will be established for traffic heading north on Cliff Avenue (towards 33rd Street). In a 2021 interview with KELOLAND, Gramm explained the need for remodeling.

“As Sioux Falls and Harrisburg continue to grow, it puts more demands on roads,” said Gramm.

With this construction, efforts will be made to remedy the safety concerns and improve the effectiveness of such a popular intersection.

A project of this size ensures that the roadways

frequented by so many are changing at the same pace as the city and accommodating the emerging needs of traffic.

As with any construction project, speed limits and available roadways will consistently change as the project progresses. The appearance and function of Cliff Avenue will be altered and the presence of such significant construction may limit the flow of traffic surrounding LHS.

“Things can change daily, [like] where [students] can and cannot go,” said LHS principal, Laura Raeder. “Whenever there's construction you always have to make sure that you give yourself some extra time to get to school.”

s any LHS student knows, by the time the clock strikes 3:15 p.m. on any given school day, Cliff Avenue is sure to be swarming with frantic, wide-eyed student drivers. Congested intersections overwhelm surrounding streets as erratic pedestrians challenge the nerve of oncoming drivers. With most of the LHS traffic flowing through Cliff Avenue, anticipated I-229 construction near its corresponding exit may pose a threat to the go-to routes of countless students.

“The purpose of the project is to improve travel mobility and safety at the I-229 interchange with Cliff Avenue (Exit 4) and along the Cliff Avenue corridor for all roadway users,” said project manager, Steve Gramm. This project has been in the works since studies done in 2010 and 2017 suggested that the roadway needed improvements. While it is already in its beginning stages, serious construction will begin on Exit 4 and aim to create a “Single Point Urban Interchange.” In this model, the limited space

Bearden is a teenage instructor at the well-known fitness studio, Ignite. She teaches a more “upbeat” version of hot yoga at the studio. The classes involve compound movements and cardio, topped with the use of weights in a heated room that reaches up to 103 degrees. Classes like these are made to improve cardio, endurance and overall strength.

Bearden’s yoga journey began as a hobby. She learned key components by attending classes and soon fell in love with the studios’ community. She was also inspired by a well-known LHS alumni, Ali Bainbridge, who also teaches at Ignite.

“I was trained in April of 2023 and auditioned. I then started teaching in October of 2023. I started teaching because I had so much fun at the studio taking the classes, learning poses and improving my cardio as well as my strength. I then planned a 45-minute certification class and a 45 audition class and was hired,” said Bearden. “I had so much fun at the studio taking the classes, and I wanted to be involved in that community. I also had a friend, Ali Bainbridge, who teaches there and she motivated me to go through with the training.”

Along with becoming a yoga instructor, Bearden is also seen as a leader at the studio. Additionally, she takes a big role at the studio, which involves leading people in bettering certain aspects of their bodies.

“I plan classes, show and verbally direct movements. I need to ensure that my form for everything is perfect in order for others to follow correctly and not injure themselves by using improper form,” said Bearden.

Along with her commitment to becoming a yoga instructor also comes difficulties considering she is involved in her everyday school life as an LHS student.

“It’s hard to juggle distance running and yoga at the same time because they are both high intensity workouts. My yoga training weekend was in the middle of track season last year and the impact of both caused me to get a stress fracture in my tibia and prevented me from doing any sort of exercise for two months,” said Bearden. “It also becomes difficult to manage time wisely so I tend to have early mornings to get my multiple workouts in.”

Though Bearden has faced difficulties, many lessons and much good have come from the time she has dedicated working at the studio. She takes advantage of the benefits and the relationships she is making throughout this path of her life and is also learning every step of the way.

“I love being able to work out while at work and seeing/ meeting all the members. I also enjoy putting together the music and movements and seeing how others react to my classes,” said Bearden. “I have learned to slow down and take things easy and to not overwork my body. I’ve also realized that working doesn’t have to be dreaded, and if you can, find a job you love doing.”

In recent years, people have become more aware of the benefits of learning another language. American Sign Language (ASL) is a language that is often overlooked, but is a valuable language to develop. Rebekah Burr, a student at LHS who is a member of the Deaf community, advocates for others unfamiliar with the language to be willing to take a step in learning ASL from members of the Deaf community. When learning ASL, it will quickly become apparent that it is not just the language but the culture that needs to be understood. For example, it is important to make the distinction between capital “Deaf” and lowercase “deaf” in order to become more familiar with the language.

Another way that some of Burr’s classmates know sign language is through the ASL class at WHS or JHS. This class was originally only offered at WHS. However, it became so popular that they decided to expand. Darcy hopes that ASL classes will eventually be offered at every high school in order to encourage more people to learn the language.

“The best way to learn ASL is definitely from a Deaf person. There are some ASL classes that you can learn from online but make sure it’s actually from a Deaf person, not a hearing person,” said Burr. “Most Deaf people appreciate it when people ask to learn their language because they are glad that people take interest in learning our language. For me, I feel happy and seen when people ask more questions after learning about my language. Question after question is my favorite thing to teach people about.”

Eachsummer, students with newfound free time often find themselves bored and without activities to keep themselves occupied. However, Sioux Falls provides an abundance of experiences planned for this summer to keep a variety of demographics busy.

From shopping to music, Downtown Sioux Falls has much to offer. Each Saturday, Falls Park hosts their farmer’s market where fresh produce and sweet treats are available to purchase. Opening on May 31, the Levitt at The Falls will begin their summer season and will continue to host live music and various concerts every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night through Aug. 31.

Many sports are commonly played and spectated during the hotter months of the year. The Canaries, a professional baseball team based in Sioux Falls, has games throughout the summer. On hotter days, however, outdoor sports can become unenjoyable. Thankfully, Sioux Falls Storm, an indoor football team, also has games this summer. Being on a professional level is not required to spectate or participate in sports activities. Many people commonly play sports such as tennis, pickleball, volleyball, golf and swimming for fun during the summer. Many Sioux Falls parks and public areas such as public pools make these activities accessible and easy. In any weather, sports fans can find something fun to do.

At the Washington Pavilion, there are many opportunities to explore the arts this summer. Many art forms will be featured at the Pavilion like the unconventional percussion show, “STOMP,” the dancers of the Haven Arts Collective and their show “Light Up the Stage” and the musical parody “SAW.” Many art exhibits are featured at various times throughout the summer. For example, “Women: A Century of Change,” which is part of National Geographic’s Unparalleled Image Collection, is featured through June 30. The Pavilion also hosts fun artistic activities like its 25thanniversary celebration on June 1, and the Sidewalk Arts Festival on Sept. 7.

For many people, cooking is not just a life skill necessary for college and adult life, but a serious hobby and interest. Some may even see culinary arts as a future career. Plum’s Cooking School is offering many camps and competitions this summer for those interested in the culinary arts. For ages 13-17, the Teen Baking Camp and the Flavors of the World Camp are options, but exclusively for those ages 16-18, The Great Sioux Falls Young Chef Competition is also available. These three experiences all have a fee of around $300 to participate.

With the diversity of Sioux Falls, it does not matter what your interests are because no matter what you find joy in during the hot summer months, Sioux Falls will provide a plethora of activities to suit any number of people and demographics.

LHS’ E-Wing houses various classes in the average student’s schedule. Every student at some point in the four years they spend at LHS has to go from the A-Wing to the E-wing.

Luckily enough, there is a hallway that everybody walks through to get to their E-Wing class. However, during passing periods, many find this hallway unusually empty. The reason for this is that many individuals will cut through the old gym to save time. The question is, Why?

According to the Pythagorean Theorem, in the case of a right-sided triangle, the sum of the square of two sides has to be equal to the hypotenuse squared. In simple terms, A² + B² = C². In theory, this means that taking the route of the hypotenuse will be a shorter trip. While it seems like it would be a no-brainer to just go through the gym every time you want to go to the E-wing, it is a lot more complicated.

When approaching the gym from the foyer there are only two doors that will open, what could be the problem? Unfortunately, many others have the same idea of going through the gym, meaning that the two doors can get clogged up. This will make the trip to the E-wing take longer. There are two exit doors that you must take to leave the old gym. While there are two doors that you can use, everybody seems to use only one of them. Once you get to the last door, there is confusion over who should go through said door. Should it be the person going to their E-wing class, or should it be the person going to the A-wing? This conflict alone will most likely cost you a couple of seconds that could be used walking in the hall.

To contrast the use of the old gym route, going through the normal hall is straightforward. There is a consistent flow of students who are going to and from E-wing. The only trouble that one might encounter when going through the hallway is getting surprise attacked by the choir door. Other than that, it is straightforward and efficient. Now, knowing the downsides of going through the gym, it seems like the no-brainer would be to go through the hall. However, time and time again you can catch the same people going through the gym.

“I get it, it’s a shortcut, but there are just so many people that it’s more than just them coming through. There are a lot of people who don’t have classes that will come through and be doing things they shouldn’t be doing in the locker room,” said LHS coach Jared Fredenburg. “No, it doesn’t bother me…The only time that I don’t like it is when people will walk through here (old gym) during fourth and fifth periods because lunch periods are cut in half. Usually, I will have a class and I will try to tell them to walk the other way,” said LHS coach Trey Naasz.

As far as the coaches go, they seem to understand why people would want to go through the gym instead of the hallway. In some scenarios, it can be bothersome, but overall if you are passing through the gym and not causing problems or trying to pass in the middle of fourth and fifth periods, you should be fine.

Teacher Appreciation Week encourages all students to show admiration for the individuals who are at school from the early hours into the late afternoon, dedicated to teaching students their lesson plans. This week allows students to reflect on the often unnoticed acts of each teacher, and show gratitude to the adults who have made their job as a teacher more than just a profession. Every teacher at LHS contributes to the broader mission of the school as defined by LHS’ district webpage: “We strive to ensure that every student who walks through our doors will receive an education that will prepare them for their future college and career plans.” These words perfectly fit LHS; a school that prepares each student for the future by helping every student. A teacher who has excelled in showing his dedication to quality education is Acc Geometry and Algebra 2 teacher Jared Jansen.

Smoothies are the perfect way to quench your thirst while simultaneously satisfying your hunger. There are three guidelines to follow for a perfect smoothie experience; flavor, texture and overall enviroment. Following these guidelines, we tasted and rated smoothies from four different places in Sioux Falls to see which smoothie was the best.

Scooter’s 6/10: (Lucy’s Review) Scooter’s had a surprisingly wide selection of smoothies for being mainly a coffee shop. I ordered the Strawberry Banana smoothie but was overwhelmed with options like peach, mango, wild berry and many more. The smoothie itself looked very healthy and was dark pink. When I tasted it I was surprised that it had no chunks at all. I think Scooters is generally a decent place to get a smoothie, but it would not be my first choice.

Smoothie King 4/10: (Lucy’s Review) This was my first time going to Smoothie King and it will probably be my last. I was immediately surprised by their immense variety of more than 50 flavors. I decided to go with the Island Time smoothie. The smoothie was slightly chunky and the flavor was strong. My friends and I all ordered our smoothies at the same time, but mine took much longer than both of theirs. I also watched one of the workers spill friend’s smoothie all over the counter and on her hands. She then pushed the remaining smoothie against the side of the cup to make it look more full after she spilled it. I would not recommend going to Smoothie King.

Agua Fresh: 7/10 (Julia’s Review) While going to get the smoothie with some friends, I immediately noticed the location of the store can be either a negative or a positive. If you are looking to quickly grab a smoothie this is not the place to go. It is located on Phillips Avenue, which makes it very hard to find a parking spot. On the other hand, the store is very aesthetically pleasing, so I would recommend going there if you are looking to spend time downtown. For the actual smoothie aspect, I ordered the Organic Acai, it was on the thicker side but had no chunks. It was very much just a basic smoothie and you could probably get better elsewhere. It deserves a 7/10 because of the overall quality, the store is very aesthetic, the smoothie was okay, and most importantly the customer service was great. I recommend going there with friends for a little treat.

Juice Stop: 10/10 (Julia’s Review) Juice Stop is my top smoothie store choice. Although I usually order the Strawberry Sour Patch Kid from their secret menu; this time I decided to try something new. When I arrived, three people were waiting ahead of me in line, but it did not take long for my turn to come up. I ordered the Power Play, which was a perfect blend of watermelon, raspberry, and strawberries. I got my smoothie in under five minutes and it had a smooth texture with no chunks. Overall, Juice Stop never fails to impress me. They make delicious smoothies quickly, and I highly recommend them.

Taking the three guidelines for a perfect smoothie into account, we determined the best smoothie place in Sioux Falls to be Juice Stop with a rating of 10/10. This is surely not a surprise as it is very popular and solely known for its delicious smoothies. Following Juice Stop was Agua Fresh with a 7/10, followed closely by Scooter’s, scoring a 6/10. These places both have satisfactory smoothies but do not compare to Juice Stop based on the taste of the smoothies. However, these places could both be convenient if you are looking to get a snack or even a meal along with your smoothie, as they have a wider variety of food than Juice Stop. Lastly, Smoothie King was found to be the worst smoothie place because although it had a wide variety of smoothies and overall the smoothie tasted fine, the store experience was not up to par.

hat if a Barbie represented each teacher at LHS? If this question has been left unanswered and haunts you every breathing minute, here’s your answer to the teachers and their best-fit Barbie match.

This is a no-brainer. As the principal at our school and a very “boss lady” esque woman, Dr. Laura Raeder should automatically be President Barbie. She already leads our school toward success, so why not conquer the world next?

driven,

LHS gym teacher and throwing coach Trey Naasz is the best possible Raquelle. His well-known sass is probably the most match-able trait. Raquelle is also passionate and driven, something Naasz shows in his coaching and relationships with his students.

Many believe Allan is a boring side character in Barbie; however, he is quite the opposite. Allan seems to be the only knowledgeable man among the Kens, whilst also being fearful of the patriarchy. Brad Newitt, LHS AP Physics 1 and 2 teacher may not be featured in the Statesman often, but his teaching impacts students in a variety of ways and he can always crack a joke or chat about sports.

Disregarding that his first name may already be Ken, Ken Doyle, an AP Gov and MUSH teacher at LHS tends to fit the role well. Frequently, Doyle breaks into the hit song “I’m Just Ken” when he feels unheard in class. He also maintains a fun and goofy atmosphere in his classroom, much like Ken’s “mojo dojo casa house.”

It may just be her blonde hair and articulated outfits, but the LHS German teacher seems like the ideal fit for Barbie. It is not just her looks, though. Frau Edwards’ outgoing and passionate personality, as well as her disdain for the real world (America), make her an exemplary choice for this role.

Another easy matchup. With his extensive history of piloting, and an office full of plane pictures, LHS counselor David Myers is perfect as Pilot Ken.

The three Goodwills in town are my top stores to go into. They take some searching but there is almost always something. I also like to go to 605 Antique for style-specific pieces, jewelry is one of my staple finds here due to the array of vintage jewelry booths. Saver’s is a hard one to try as a beginner. They like to overprice a lot of their items but there is always an off chance that

When it comes to thrifting it’s up to the thrifter’s imagination, but there are always a few ways to make for the perfect “thrift-trip.” Thrifting is one of my main means of shopping and the best way to be original with certain fashion choices.

you will find something worth purchasing.

I would say PB & Thrift is a little far off from the common “thrift store.” They have about two racks of actual thrifted pieces, usually repriced and the rest of the store dedicated to sneaker reselling and mass-produced items.

TIPS

WHERE TO THRIFT:

WHAT TO LOOK FOR:

K: Lowrise jeans, Shrunken tees, Purses, Mcbling (big glasses, zip-ups, bedazzled)

VINTAGE:

MAXIMALIST: Jewelry, fun patterns and colors, eccentric coats, boots and kitten heels

CLEAN: basics, preloved jeans, trinkets, Adidas sneakers

MOB WIFE:

Fur, animal print, high heels, mini dresses

Large jackets/ varsity jackets, preloved jeans, sneakers, vintage statement pieces and brand basics and crews

BEACHY: Swim coverups, swimsuits, jean shorts or jeans to cut, beachy hats, totes and beach bags

ALTERNATIVE: statement pieces, large jewelry, mini skirts

STREETWEAR: Oversized sweats and hoodies, sneakers, graphic tees

-Look through everything, and if there is time even twice, you never know what you might have missed

-Buy quality brands, avoid No Boundaries (Walmart), Shein or Forever 21 for example, you might be able to find the piece brand new for the same price

-Do not fall for the up-sale, some stores will pick out certain brands and charge more, most of the time it is not worth it unless you have wanted the specific piece

-Pick your times wisely; I like to go in the morning or early afternoon to get a head start, but most stores restock randomly

-Go often! Thrift stores are constantly filtering through their stock.

The Qdoba versus Pancheros debate has been ongoing in Sioux Falls for close to a decade. Once Chipotle was added to the fray in 2020, the town became further divided. Pancheros fans argue that the freshly made tortilla sets their burritos apart, while Chipotle and Qdoba enjoyers prefer the ingredients each respective restaurant provides. But what if you did not have to choose? What if you could mix and match the best parts of each establishment to create the perfect burrito experience? I will be testing the taste, price and overall practicality of constructing the ultimate burrito.

The single most important part of the burrito is the tortilla. Too thin and the burrito rips, too thick and you get a mouthful of carbs. Put in basketball terms, it might not be the star player, but even Michael Jordan never won a playoff series without Scottie Pippen. The tortilla literally holds the rest of the burrito together. Without a tortilla, it is no more than a bunch of ingredients thrown into a bowl. That is why I chose the best vessel for my burrito, the tortilla from Pancheros. Pancheros makes their tortillas from scratch, keeping it in a dough ball until a customer orders one. They press it fresh and cook it on the griddle for 15-20 seconds until it develops a malleable and slightly crispy texture that I cannot get enough of. This pick should not surprise anyone reading this. When it comes to tortillas, Pancheros is unbeatable.

The filling is where things get a bit more interesting. The protein is another crucial ingredient in a burrito and I knew exactly where to go.

The Chicken al Pastor at Chipotle is by far the best chicken of the three restaurants. Since I prefer chicken to steak and carnitas, my decision was a no-brainer. Chipotle marinades the chicken in a blend of chiles and pineapple to create an intense smoky and sweet flavor with a little kick at the end. The Chicken al Pastor is the perfect centerpiece for my ultimate burrito.

Next I stopped at Qdoba to round out my burrito. Qdoba is very nostalgic for me because Sioux Falls did not have a Chipotle or Pancheros until 2016. On top of that, Qdoba has the biggest portions of the three. I ordered white rice, both beans (trust me, it is good), cheese, queso, corn salsa, pico de gallo, sour cream and chile crema. No ingredient is more important than the other. Each one plays its role perfectly, always noticeable but never overpowering. Once the fillings were secured, it was time to assemble my magnum opus.

Filling and wrapping the burrito was fairly simple, but after looking at it I could not help but feel like something was missing. Then it came to me, a viral TikTok “hack” where you give the burrito a cheese crust to add the perfect crispy texture. So, I melted cheese in a pan, set the burrito on top and waited until the cheese developed a nice golden-brown color. The ultimate burrito was finally complete and all that was left was to try it.

This ruined burritos for me. Obviously, I will still eat them but that was the best burrito I have ever tasted. The Chicken al Pastor meshes surprisingly well with the Qdoba ingredients and, of course, the Pancheros tortilla held everything together perfectly. The cheese crust took it to a whole new level and I will be adding that to any burrito I bring home in the future. The overall taste of the burrito gets a 9.6 out of 10 and the price was only about $3 more than a regular burrito. Sadly, driving to all three locations and assembling the burrito become too much of a hassle to order this consistently. In any case, I recommend everyone to try it at least once in their life.

Make school fun because it can be if you give it a chance.

Figuring out high school is difficult, and most people have no clue what is going on until it is over. Getting some advice is never a bad idea, so LHS seniors gave their two cents on how to find your way through the high school experience.

As of 2022, Kyra Knudtson held the all-time school record for girl’s javelin with a throw of 93 feet and four inches. In Hayden Kok’s first year for LHS track and field, first meet and first recorded javelin throw, she surpassed the existing LHS school record for girl’s javelin. Her score read 103 feet and 10 inches; she is now mentioned in all LHS track and field record books.

For average athletes, it takes years of experience, countless hours of training and a substantial measure of determination; however, for Kok it was spontaneous. On no account had track crossed her mind until she started taking AP chemistry with James “Jaws” Jarvoski.

“I first got into javelin because one day in chemistry, Jaws made me throw a pen at the wall. He told me I was going to throw javelin, so I signed up the day before the first practice and just decided to go for it,” said Kok.

Once track season started, she attended practice after school whether it was to get more reps, work on her technique in the gym, throw outside or prepare for an upcoming meet. Just more than four weeks of extensive school days, the City Metro Meet in Brandon, SD was labeled her first meet. Kok’s results came as a surprise to all audiences.

“I didn’t even know what a good throw was for me since it was my first time actually throwing. I had to find out from Coach DeHaai that I broke the school record the following day,” said Kok.

Henceforward, she has pursued javelin and broke the LHS girls’ javelin record a second time. Tuesday, April 16, 2024, marked her third meet participated in, and Kok’s second time overriding her former record. At the Brookings Quad meet, she threw a distance of 105 feet and six inches; it was a foot and eight inches greater than her initial record.

Besides being a natural track star, Kok thrives on the softball field too. From March of her freshman year, Kok has partaken in LHS softball; however, the sport was first introduced to Kok when she was in kindergarten. After a year of competing, the sport of softball stuck with her.

Unfortunately, high school track and softball fall in the same season. For dual-sport athletes, including Kok, it is a schedule crunch trying to coordinate school, extracurricular activities and both sports. A few days out of the week, Kok finds herself sharing practice time between sports; oftentimes she leaves javelin practice early just to arrive late for softball practice. Even though some of her days are lengthy, Kok certainly did not expect the end product. “Although I train for softball a lot more, I never even imagined that I would be throwing javelin, let alone setting the school record,” said Kok.

Copa América is an international soccer tournament that happens once every two years. It traditionally included South American national teams but has expanded to include teams from North and Central America as well. When the last Copa América was held in Brazil in the summer of 2021, Argentina came out on top in a tense final against the host nation. This summer, however, it is anyone’s tournament.

The tournament format includes a group stage and knockout stage and is similar to that used in the World Cup. The 16 participating nations are divided into four groups of four and will play the three other teams in their group before the top two from each group advance to a single elimination bracket. The United States was drawn into a group with Uruguay, Panama and Bolivia, and is expected to qualify for the quarter-finals alongside South American powerhouse Uruguay. From there, it will be no easy task as the Americans try to progress, facing fierce competition in the form of Lionel Messi and Argentina, Neymar Jr. and Brazil and the regional rival: Mexico. Fans in the United States and around the world now wait patiently for June 20, when the opening match between Argentina and Canada kicks off. With the soccer scene already on the rise in the United States, there is reason to hope this tournament will be the most passionately followed in a long time. Between their current run of form and the innate advantage that comes with hosting a tournament, American fans have every reason in the world to be optimistic about the U.S. men’s odds this year.

Senior outfielder Marisa Riddle has been a strong component of the LHS softball team since her freshman year. If anyone has seen her in her cowgirl boots or pulling into the LHS parking lot in her big black truck, they would agree that her walk-up song, “Chicken Fried '' by Zac Brown Band, suits her very well. If you hear the chirp “sit on it” coming from the dugout, it could likely be coming from Riddle. Part of her routine before a game always consists of putting her left batting glove on before her right, as well as wearing her hair the same every time. When Riddle had to choose whether she would rather strike out looking or run the bases naked after a homerun, for Riddle, there was no hesitation in running the bases naked.

Sophomore Jada Cooper is a shortstop and pitcher for the LHS softball team. She walks up on an energy-lifting song, “The Hills” by the Weeknd. Cooper’s superstition is always taping her thumb for each game, this results in a superb thumbs up. Even though striking out is not on Cooper's list of accomplishments, Cooper would still choose to strike out in the case that she would have to run the bases naked. Cooper truly believes a softball is harder to hit than a baseball (#girlpower), and unfortunately for Avery Dorman, out of the entire team, Cooper would never let her date her son.

Junior, Ella DuBois, is an outfielder for the LHS Varsity softball team. While she is known to be bubbly and outgoing, her walkout song, “Redrum” by 21 Savage might come to you as a surprise, as it is more on the violent side. Her competitiveness definitely comes out both on the field and in the dugout which is revealed through her chirping; her favorite chirp is “foul it off big dog.” On game days, DuBois has a strong superstition of always wearing an undershirt, whether it is the hottest or coldest day. DuBois loves all her teammates and would do anything for them, but if there was one person on her team who she would never let date her son, it would be senior Norah Christiansen.

Outfielder, Ruby Hennies, is just a freshman, but the LHS softball team has already found its way into Hennies’ heart. Hennies loves to chirp in the dugout, but even more likes to bark at the opposing team. Before a game, Hennies likes to ask herself “what would Jesus do?” as it says this phrase on her bracelet that she always wears for every game. Similarly to Riddle, Hennies will avoid striking out as much as she can, even if it means she would (hypothetically) have to run the bases naked. Without a doubt, Hennies believes it is harder to hit a softball rather than a baseball and if there was anyone on her team who she would not let date her son, it would (again) be Norah Christiansen.

From his very comfortable spot on the bench in the dugout, Quinn chirps “squirt gun.” Quinn loves impersonating TikTok star Big Justice, which he shows all his friends on the baseball team. His favorite player is Royce Lewis, whose job of hitting a baseball is “a lot harder” than hitting a softball. If Nate Motl ever tried to date his daughter, Quinn would not let it happen.

Before batting, the legend puts pine tar on his bat and tries to time himself with the pitcher. He fuels his excellence with watermelon Sour Patch Kids taken from Brayden Olsen’s bag. Senior, Jack Osterloo, is a right fielder. He is very opinionated on the Barry Bonds Hall of Fame debate, asserting that he is “the best player of all time, the G.O.A.T.” Goldfish is Osterloo’s snack of choice, especially the Flavor Blasted ones. He enjoys taunting opponents from his spot in the dugout yelling “by you” when he gets the chance. In a hypothetical scenario where Osterloo could either walk the bases naked after a home run or strikeout looking, he said: “strikeout looking, for sure.” In the future, Osterloo said, Caden (Gary) Watson would not be able to date his daughter.

TheMerriam-Webster dictionary defines the dog days of summer as “the period between early July and early September when the hot sultry weather of summer usually occurs; a period of stagnation or inactivity.” These long days are right around the corner as the school year comes to a close, leaving students wondering what to do with their new free time. One of the best ways to combat boredom and idleness is to get outside and play sports. Pickleball, beach volleyball and spikeball are gaining in popularity and are great options for students wanting to get active and have fun. People with any athletic skill level can play these sports as they are easy to learn. Students do not have to be on a team to play, simply gather friends or family and play anytime.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Americans discovered they could practice social distancing while playing pickleball. This caused the sport to boom in popularity; once known for being played in retirement communities, pickleball has become a sport played by all ages across America. The 2023 APP Pickleball Participation report revealed that 14% of Americans played pickleball at least once in 2023. This surge has spread to Sioux Falls and even to LHS students.

Sioux Falls has made strides to accommodate the sport’s popularity, and now the city boasts numerous places to play pickleball. The public can use these outdoor facilities for no cost: Linda Erickson Pickleball Complex, Riverdale Park, Laurel Oak Park and Menlo Park. People of varying athletic abilities can play this low-impact sport, and it is straightforward to learn.

Once a niche sport, spikeball has become mainstream with more than four million players worldwide. The company Spikeball was created in 2007 and became popular on college campuses as students enjoyed its fast-paced nature. Unlike most sports where players have to travel to courts or fields to play, spikeball can be played anywhere. This is because spikeball has an easily transportable trampoline-style net and small ball. Spikeball can be played in a yard, park, beach, parking lot or even inside. For athletes, spikeball helps improve handeye coordination and can also be a fun activity for team bonding.

To play:

• Two teams of two players will spread out around the net, standing next to their teammate.

• One player will toss the ball up and serve it so it ricochets off the net to the other team.

To play:

• Use a pickleball paddle and pickleball ball.

• Like tennis, it can be played by singles or doubles.

• The court is painted to have a right service area, a left service area and a “kitchen.”

• The kitchen is the area within 7 feet on both sides of the net where players cannot volley (hit the ball out of the air).

• The serve must land in the opposite diagonal court.

• Players must serve underhand, hitting the ball below the waist.

• The ball must bounce once on each side of the net before a player can start a volley.

• Players have three alternating touches to hit it back to the other team.

• To earn a point, the other team must hit the ground, the rim of the net or bounce the ball more than once on the net.

Beach volleyball is just as fun as Maverick and Goose make it look in the “Top Gun” movie scene. However, people do not need to go to a California beach to play. Sioux Falls has many public parks with sand courts such as Cherry Rock Park, Riverdale Park and Lewis Park. Beach volleyball is technically supposed to be played with two-player teams, but if people are just playing for fun, they can play with as many on a team as they want. This makes beach volleyball a great sport for big groups of people. The only equipment needed is a volleyball, so it is also very convenient.

To play:

• A player will either serve underhand or overhand to the other team.

• Each team can have up to three touches before sending the ball over the net.

• Points are earned by landing the ball on the opponent’s court or boundary lines, or if the other team commits a fault (double contact, caught or thrown, touches the net).

Organized team sports can be very stressful, especially during the summer. Summer is jam-packed with tournaments, games, practices and team events. However, unorganized sports are an alternate way to compete more casually. People can spend the summer relaxing with their family and friends and learning a new sport.

• To win, a team must get 21 points and win by two points.

$100,000 contains endless possibilities: it can purchase real estate, be invested in the stock market or perhaps cover one year of expenses at Vanderbilt University. Indeed, beginning in the 20242025 school year, some Vanderbilt students will pay $98,426 in tuition and other fees, according to the New York Times. With this staggering cost comes many questions, the main one being “why so much?” College institutions and the opportunities they provide have always been integral to American society. When one receives a postsecondary education, they are not only immersed in new social and cultural perspectives but also given the prospect of earning more in the

future. According to the APLU, those who hold bachelor’s degrees make median incomes that are roughly 84% greater than those who only hold high school diplomas. Furthermore, one’s job security and socioeconomic status can also be advanced by a college education; those with bachelor’s degrees, on average, experience poverty three and a half times less than their high schooleducated counterparts. With these statistics, it is clear that post-secondary education can grant security; however, this security comes with a price. The cost of college is constantly changing and depends on a variety of factors. An institution’s location, public or private status and level of specialization can impact its annual cost. Not only that, but students often pay for components such as housing, food, excess fees and travel expenses, which can quickly increase the cost of attending college. According to the College Board, as of the 2023-2024 academic year, four-year, public colleges had an average list price (including all expenses) of $24,030 per year for in-state students. In comparison, out-ofstate students paid, on average, $41,920 at these same institutions. Perhaps most substantial was the list price of private, four-year colleges, which was $56,190

on average during the same year. And while a majority of students do not pay full tuition, in 2021-2022, 51% of bachelor’s degree recipients graduated with debt, the average owing $29,400. While these prices may seem acceptable to some and staggering to others, one thing is worth acknowledging: people continue to pay for college. Although trends vary at the institutional level, the number of Americans enrolled in college has stayed relatively constant within the past decade, according to data from the College Board. This implies that despite the cost, college remains a worthwhile, if not necessary, experience for many people. Considering this, it seemed prudent to ask current LHS seniors for their thoughts regarding tuition and the price of college. Many perspectives were gathered, from students paying in-state prices at public universities to those paying out-of-state tuition at private institutions. From these results, it became clear that while the question of “why so much?” will never be fully answered, a different one can be: “If so much, then why?”

Whilemost know Ozempic from its catchy jingle, those living with type 2 diabetes view Ozempic as a lifeline, allowing them to combat their condition and achieve a healthy lifestyle. The drug works by decreasing hunger cues and supplying the pancreas with insulin, in turn decreasing blood sugar. Unfortunately, there is a nationwide Ozempic shortage due to its mass popularity and dual usage for weight loss, placing those with type 2 diabetes at risk.

Although FDA-approved for treating type 2 diabetes, its usage has shifted to weight loss as a consequence of social media, suspected celebrity usage and a higher chance of coverage by insurance than other weight loss drugs. Combined with the shortage and high price points for Ozempic and other drugs necessary to treat diabetes, many are struggling to have access to a medication that keeps their condition’s severity at bay. Patients are forced to become strong advocates for themselves, oftentimes calling several pharmacies and traveling great distances, only to be met with the all too familiar answer, “no.”

“Thiara [medical director of the weight management clinic at the University of California, San Francisco] said some wind up driving 45 minutes or more to get prescriptions filled, a barrier for hourly workers who can’t leave their job and for people without cars,” said Tom Murphy, a journalist for Keloland.

shortage, it has no impact on treating the disorder, as it fails to address the mental and underlying cause and instead provides a quick fix that can easily be undone without consistent access to the drug.

“‘GLP-1’s [the type of drug Ozempic is classified under] can’t help someone deal with their stress, anxiety, [and] trauma history,’ said psychologist Cynthia Bulik, one of the world’s leading eating disorder researchers, and Founding Director of the University of North Carolina Center of Excellence of Eating Disorders,” said Cole Kazdin, a journalist for Time. To combat the overuse of Ozempic and other weight loss drugs there must be a fundamental change to the medical industry. Rather than placing high prices and lack of insurance coverage on weight loss drugs, there should be a strong emphasis on pre-diabetic prevention, which is most easily achieved through a change in health habits and access to weight loss supplements. In turn, this would decrease the dual usage of Ozempic, making it more accessible to those with type 2 diabetes who need it most, and provide those struggling with severe obesity to start their path to a healthier lifestyle.

Denied access to Ozempic has catastrophic consequences for those struggling with type 2 diabetes. This condition can be reversed or made less severe with proper treatment and healthy living habits. Yet, not having access to Ozempic can yield a decline in health and a loss of progress, as it must be used regularly to be efficient. For weight management, a lack of access to Ozempic has a similar effect, resulting in regaining lost weight.

“‘Since Ozempic treats the chronic disease of diabetes, people can potentially see a worsening of their diabetes when they stop Ozempic,’ Dr. Tchang says,” said Lisa Rapaport, a journalist for Everyday Health. “Even if people manage to maintain the eating habits they developed while on Ozempic, their blood sugar might still rise when they stop treatment.”

While Ozempic, along with similar drugs, combats obesity it also worsens eating disorders, especially when prescribed

“‘I know the insurance companies don’t want to pay, but between (them) and the pharmaceutical industry, they need to find some kind of nice middle ground because these medications, they can save people’s lives,’ said Bouboulis, who has lost around 80 pounds since he started taking them,” said Tom Murphy, a journalist for Keloland.

On a statewide scale, Governor Kristi Noem is taking steps to improve the Ozempic crisis by increasing the amount of low-stock medications, including Ozempic, within South Dakota, in hopes a similar approach is achieved on a nationwide scale. While it may not solve the entire issue, with proper management, it will improve the current situation.

“South Dakota already maintains drug caches at each end of the state, at a pharmaceutical warehouse in Sioux Falls and at a Rapid City hospital. It will now add sites at partner pharmacies in five additional cities statewide. In addition to current antibiotic stockpiles, the department is adding albuterol, epinephrine, insulin, prednisone and pediatric amoxicillin to the list, which was developed by the state Department of Health as part of a study that Noem ordered in May,” said Steve Karnowski, a journalist for AP News.

Addiction is perhaps one of the most misunderstood illnesses by the general public in the present climate. Its impacts are severe, yet the direness of this problem that plagues our education system is still somehow foreign to those who are not on the front lines.

I’ve been no stranger to addiction. When I was seven years old, my mom died of alcohol abuse-related reasons, and this was my first exposure to death. At such a young age, I had no concept of death; I didn’t understand that when my dad pulled my sister, Daisy, and I into the kitchen just a couple days after Christmas in 2012, I would never see my mom again. Years later in 2016, the worst kind of familiar situation occurred. I was called into the living room by my uncle and told that my dad didn’t make it through the night. His death was also related to his drug and alcohol abuse along with a decline in his mental health.

Many who see this trauma from the outside assume that Daisy and/or myself are bound

to follow our parents’ path. Based solely on statistics, it’s agreed upon that children are predisposed to addiction if raised by parents who struggle with any substancerelated abuse.

According to MentalHelp, “It is widely accepted within the literature on substance abuse disorders that problems with addiction tend to run in families; individuals who grew up with parents who struggled with addiction are more likely to also have problems with addiction themselves later on in life. This predisposition to developing an addiction disorder can be accounted for by the interaction of both environmental and genetic factors.”

Rather than fall into an addicted lifestyle, I fight to overcome my dreaded destiny. I cannot participate in traditional parties that occur throughout high school and college simply because having “just one” drink or hit of a vape would be detrimental.

Both Daisy and I will be firstgeneration college students as our dad was the only parent who graduated high school but ended

his schooling there. Although we’ve almost achieved our happy ending, this is statistically not the case for most. Danyelle Brown, one of the assistant principals at LHS, sees first-hand the toll that addiction has on many students.

“We definitely see an impact on attendance at school and an impact on behaviors in classes. If you’re heavy into your addiction and your body reacts in a down, or kind of, ‘I’m just going to sleep” mode, that can affect it,” said Brown. “Impulsiveness can also affect behavior. Spending a lot of time trying to get that next [fix] whether that’s from someone in the bathroom [or any other means]. So grades, attendance and behavior are the biggest ones we see.”

Any student who’s ever gone to the bathroom at any time in the school day knows how many people are in there vaping. They can be a nuisance when in a hurry, but it can make one wonder about their lives. Bringing any illegal substance warrants a consequence, but it also calls for a check-in.

is because it’s [one of the main spots for vaping]. A lot of times students see that as disciplinarian, but I have a lot of conversations with families of students that I’m concerned about. We bring them to counseling too and say, ‘Hey, I’ve seen this student in the bathroom x amount of times, and I’m concerned about them.’ And we kind of let the conversation go from there,” said Brown. “My goal is not to be mean, of course discipline has to happen, and we don’t want that at school, but there’s a lot of students who don’t want to be around that, and they have the right to not be around that as well.”

a substance they’re not supposed to have here at school and there’s school discipline attached to it, most of the time they have to have an evaluation at Southeastern Behavioral. What that evaluation does is it allows the family and Southeastern to make that determination of what kind of support we can give and what kind of support the community has,” said Brown.

SFSD also works with a therapy office that offers four free sessions to employees in the district. No matter student or staff, every addict deserves help. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, NIDA, “[Addiction] is considered a brain disorder because it involves functional changes to brain circuits involved in reward, stress and selfcontrol.”

the same time, which is why it’s important for students to get help. Whether that be through a school counselor, a therapist, a parent or a friend., it is crucial to be treated for addiction; the truth is that no one can treat it on their own. That may sound obvious for someone unfamiliar with addiction, but Schmit believes that recognizing you need help is the first step in recovery.

against what your body is trying to tell you to do and decide that you want to fight.”

“Part of the reason why I spend a lot of time in the girls bathroom

Amidst the chaos of life and school and ever-rising need for therapists, many students are never taught the healthy skills that are necessary to cope with life. For those who turn to substances, even if they choose to use at school, punishment is not the only result. The Sioux Falls School District works with Southeastern Behavioral when a student gets caught with a vape or other substance at school.

“If students get in trouble with

In other words, addiction is not a choice; it is a disease. Whether the first encounter with a substance was a choice or not, the disease is out of an addict’s control. Because drugs and alcohol can severely impact a developing brain, the typical legal age for controlled substances is 21. As accessibility rises with e-cigarettes and vape products, the age of people suffering from substance use disorders decreases every year.

Jessica Schmit, one of the counselors at LHS, has a background in working with severe addiction cases at a JDC program, as well as working as a project mental health coordinator.

“[The first barrier to recovery is] denial: not knowing that you need the help. Stigma: society thinks less of you. Access: to help and the cost. Treatment in itself is just very difficult. Drug usage truly changes your brain structure, and you’ll have to fight daily to function like you used to,” said Schmit. “I have the utmost respect for people who have gone through treatment and fight every day, that is so impressive. You are not who you once were before drugs, which is sad and scary. Every day you need to make the decision to go

Recovery is not as simple as quitting cold turkey. First, the addict needs to want help. NIDA says “Treatment of chronic diseases involves changing deeply rooted behaviors, and relapse doesn’t mean treatment has failed… When patients first stop using drugs, they can experience various physical and emotional symptoms, including restlessness or sleeplessness, as well as depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions.”

While the road may be rough, recovery is possible. Even if the addiction impacting your life is secondhand, you do not have to carry that weight alone. We’re lucky to live in an age where mental health is being prioritized more than ever. This is apparent in Sioux Falls with the abundance of treatment centers as well as counselors and therapists.

“It’s important to know that we all need assistance from others at times and it’s okay to ask for help and receive the help,” said Schmit. Addiction is becoming normalized in America’s teenage culture, but with a rise in this disease comes a rise in professionals who are passionate about educating and treating it. The stigma surrounding addicts and addiction is powerful, but we as people can fix this. The next time you see someone vaping in the bathroom, don’t be so quick to judge. Addiction does not define a person.

“One of those things that I try to strive for is to remember that behavior isn’t the student. There’s a story there, and there’s great potential there. I believe that education is the best way to do that. Everyone has a story, you don’t know the story of the person sitting next to you, and chances are they’re not going to share it: be kind,” said Brown.

“Whether it’s personal addiction or addiction of a loved one, it greatly impacts livesaddiction controls your life. If you’re a student struggling with addiction, your whole social world will change; you may notice yourself pulling away from your friends and being depressed or anxious, among other things. As for students academically, it’s extremely difficult to focus on your studies when you’re craving whatever fix you need; it’s a huge distraction and nothing will seem more important than getting your fix,” said Schmit.

If a student has an addiction and is also a full-time student, their grades will inevitably be affected. It’s simply not possible to be fully committed to both at
