A

few days before the school year started this past August, U.S. News & World Report released its “U.S. 2025-2026 Best High School Rankings.” Based on the college readiness index, AP exam passing rates, graduation rate and more, LHS was named #1 High School in South Dakota.

This honor was only attainable with the effort of passionate teachers, aids, clerical staff, encouraging parents and dedicated students. It is true that this school’s collaboration has become tradition. LHS proves to be a well-rounded environment, from academics to athletics, fine arts programs, musical ensembles and all the moving parts in between. LHS has historically been referred to as “stinkin’ Lincoln” by rival schools.

However, here are individual perspectives — as well as accomplishments — from LHS that contributed to the #1 ranking, all proving that Lincoln is “not so stinkin’.”

“It’s a total Lincoln package to help us be successful.

A lot of work goes in from that freshman level to make sure students understand what it means to be a patriot [and] what it means to be a high school student, all the way up to high test scores on AP tests and ACT tests.”

On Aug. 26, 2025, Melania Trump announced the Presidential AI Challenge, intended to spark youth’s interest in the topic of artificial intelligence and its use in solving real-world problems. As 2025 marks 250 years of freedom for the United States, she hopes to encourage students and educators to come together as a nation and get a head start on the next big thing: AI. There are four different age categories available for the Presidential AI Challenge. Three of these are for students, but there is also a category for educators alone. The three student age categories include elementary school, middle school and high school.

The students must create a group of one to four people with an additional adult supervisor to help submit the challenge project. The educator category must consist of one to three educators, 18 years or older, working on the project.

In the Presidential AI Challenge, students can choose between two tracks, Track I or II, when submitting their project.

Track I is focused on planning the solution to the problem, rather than implementing it. Students must design a presentation and make a plan describing how AI could be used to fix a problem of their choice. In contrast, Track ll focuses more on building a functioning AI program to address the problem. This could consist of an app or website that the students create. Educators, however, are limited to Track lll where they are tasked with drafting an engaging lesson plan to teach students why AI is important or creating an AI system that helps teachers in some way.

Once the project is submitted by Jan. 20, 2026, the teams will begin competing at the state level.

If a group is selected as their state’s champion, they will

win a Presidential Certificate of Achievement and gain access to AI resources to further develop their project. Additionally, they will move to develop a virtual presentation to compete at the regional level. If they succeed here and become regional champions, they will be considered for a three-day showcase at the White House and qualify for the national competition in June 2026. National Champions of each age level will be awarded a $10,000 prize.

All in all, this competition was created to set the United States above the rest of the world when it comes to knowledge and understanding of AI. Melania Trump wants to give youth the resources to use AI in a responsible and creative way while solving problems in the community.

With registration still open, now is the chance to help shape the next 250 years of the United States.

Millions of people all over America have relied on food stamps and electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards. With the recent U.S. government shutdown, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP has been frozen and left millions without food, including students in the Sioux Falls School District.

SNAP is a federally funded social welfare program that provides food-purchasing assistance for low-income families all over the United States. The first concept of the program was developed in 1939 with the Food Stamp Program (FSP) after the Great Depression left most citizens with low income and unable to afford necessities like food.

The FSP ended in 1943, but in 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson requested that Congress make the program permanent. Since then, the program has expanded and hit participation up to 42.1 million people in 2017.

On Oct. 1, 2025, the United States began the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, as a result of Congress’s inability to agree on a new funding deal. Due to this shutdown, millions of Americans have unpaid jobs, loan and permit delays and lost healthcare access and food assistance. At first, allotments for food-stamp beneficiaries were predicted to be cut in

half, but they will now be down to 35% in November 2025. On Nov. 9, 2025, the U.S. Senate voted 60-40 for a key factor in reopening the government and ending the shutdown, which would help federal funding and support vulnerable populations.

In South Dakota alone, there are 29 food banks and pantries, with the primary one being Feeding South Dakota.

Feeding South Dakota feeds over 12,000 families each month with their mobile food distribution sites and sends out almost 165,000 food packages over the school year.

These food banks and pantries have been at almost full capacity, even before SNAP was cut.

Government funds help these food pantries as well as donations, but the Supreme Court of the U.S. extended a temporary block for full food assistance on Nov. 11, 2025.

This order has kept families all over anxiously awaiting their groceries, wondering if they will get to eat this week. The U.S. Government has been trying to reopen to restore SNAP payments, but it seems unclear when this will happen.

have been kept busy, but they alone are not enough.

“For every one meal food banks provide, SNAP provides nine,” said Feeding South Dakota.

Students at LHS have expressed their worries over this funding cut, as 87.5% of students know of someone who relies on SNAP or food stamps. Being high school students, most rely on their families or schools to provide food. But, with many families needing this assistance, more will need to apply for free/ reduced lunches. This also takes a toll on school administration with new verification rules for incomebased applications.

“Single parents work hard enough, and my fear is that after SNAP being reduced/ dismantled that they will not be able to afford having children and the environment for these children will be destabilized,” said an anonymous LHS student.

“This kind of thing affects every aspect of a child and parent’s life.”

Hy-Vee has Food Bank Donation Bundles of $5.00 or $10.00. Bundles will be donated to help keep the food bank fully stocked during this time of need.

Club 17 is a food pantry stocked with essential items like toiletries, undergarments & socks and a limited supply of clothing. Club 17 is supported and funded by donations from LHS families.

Each week, LHS receives a delivery from Feeding South Dakota. These items are stored in the building and distributed to staff, students and families in need on a caseby-case basis.

A

hunter’s heritage

T

he morning sun rises gently over the icy, battered remains of the rural cornfield. Down below, LHS junior Colton Clark walks the isolated fields, crunching his boots on the soft snow and cornstalk stubs. Dressed in blaze orange and blue jeans, he listens intently, searching for the sound of a stirring rooster amidst the quietness of the field. Beside him are his family members, marching uniformly like militiamen, searching for their future dinner.

This is not a typical teenage weekend; this is a fourth-generation hunter carrying on his family’s tradition in the fields of rural South Dakota.

Clark was one of the 140,000 hunters to hunt last pheasant season in South Dakota.

The season runs from Oct. 18 to Jan. 31 every year, bringing people from around the country to “The Pheasant Capital of the World.” According to the South Dakota Game Fish & Parks, the 2024 pheasant season saw over 1.3 million pheasants

harvested, with over 55% of harvests coming from out-of-state residents. South Dakota is a haven for hunters due to its habitat full of seeds, insects and grains, which make up a pheasant’s main diet. It also boasts a large amount of public and private land available for hunting, and the abundance of man-made foot plots and shelter belts provides perfect cover for pheasants to hide.

Clark is one of the lucky people who experiences the benefits of privately owned land, where fewer people have hunted equally valuable land.

“My family has a really big farm up in Madison, so we usually go up there, and they have a lot of cornfields that we hunt in,” said Clark.

Hunting allows for Clark to escape the city limits and venture out into the sparsely populated, tranquil parts of rural South Dakota. Here, Clark can enjoy a setting that envelops a sense of peace and calmness,

contrasting the bustling, fast-paced city life he is used to. Clark’s connections to his family allowed him to learn everything there is to know about hunting and helped him to learn hands-on how to hunt safely and effectively. “[I was taught] everything from how to handle a gun, where to aim, telling the difference between a hen and a rooster, where to walk [and] where to find them at what time of day,” said Clark.

While pheasant hunting offers many benefits, such as boosts to local economies and conservation of land, the most important part is the profound bonds created by passing tradition down through generations. Clark now participates in a tradition started over 60 years ago by his great-grandfather. He looks forward to every aspect hunting offers with his family, including the grand prize of satisfaction after he or one of his family members’ aim hits true.

“It’s rewarding to go on a hunt, and if you get a couple pheasants, to be able to cook it and know that you got the food yourself,” said Clark.

Pheasant hunting defines South Dakota, and passing down the love to the next generation helps to preserve South Dakotan identity. The current youth are the heirs to the 100-year tradition of early morning wake-ups, sore shoulders from holding a gun and celebratory triumph of getting a bird after a long wait. The cold mornings dressed in camouflage snow pants and a bright orange cap are a catalyst to connections made between sons and fathers, nieces and uncles, grandchildren and grandparents. They create lasting connections and memories that bring families together and help strengthen those relationships. Clark hopes to take what he has learned from his family and pass down the tradition to his future kids and grandkids.

“We’re already starting to get my little cousins into [hunting] and they’re young, like eight or nine years old,” said Clark. “I would say it’ll stay in my family forever.”

A

longside teaching math at LHS, Kerri Stockwell makes sure to find time for at least some physical activity every day. She takes her dog on a relatively long walk every day of the week, and then three days a week she does a strength workout with some cardio included. Stockwell also makes sure to stretch after her workouts to help with better recovery.

As a former college basketball player, Stockwell’s workout routine has changed drastically over time. After college, she began running for both enjoyment and exercise, which led to her running three marathons later on. Since she was running seven days a week at the time, this took a toll on her body, so she decided to change it up and begin cycling and strength training as well. Now, her current routine suits her needs and wants when it comes to physical fitness. She sticks with it because she knows it will benefit her both now and in the future.

“I want to be active and feel good for many years to come, and I know that means I have to treat my body well now,” said Stockwell. “I exercise in the morning, so there are no excuses if my day gets too busy. Yes, that means a 5 a.m. wake-up call, but as long as I can get seven to eight hours of sleep, I’m good with that.”

Stockwell’s advice to anyone trying to start a workout routine is to have someone to keep you accountable, try different workout types and keep at it because even if it is hard at first, improvement will come with time.

Stockwell also enjoys bowling and playing pickleball.

s a current assistant coach for the LHS football team and a geography teacher at LHS, Travis Schafer still manages to fit in a workout every weekday morning. Before school, at 5:45 a.m., he can be found either doing superset strength work or exercising on the elliptical. When he first started working out, he would lift as much weight as he could to gain strength. Now, he has changed his routine by instead lifting lighter weights for more reps.

Schafer first became involved in fitness in high school, when he started going to the gym with his brother. Over time, he began to appreciate it and has many reasons for why he has continued to do it years later.

“It is now a habit, and I enjoy it,” said Schafer. “Once I get up, I am ready to take on the day. … My goal is to win each day and start by getting a workout in.”

Schafer understands that sticking to a fitness routine can be demanding, so finding the type of exercise that brings the most fulfillment is essential. It is tough to complete a workout that does not instill enjoyment, so make sure to find what works and stick to it.

Schafer’s favorite workout song is “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC.

cience teacher Jennifer DuBois is well-known for staying very active in the gym. She typically works out six times a week for an hour each, waking up bright and early so she can start at 5 a.m. At GreatLIFE, she works on strengthening her muscles through lifting weights, and outside, she works on cardio by going on runs. Her routine has been this way for a long time, and she makes sure to vary her workouts so she can strengthen different muscles and maintain overall health. Other than for her well-being, she enjoys working out because she feels significantly better when she does.

“I have so much more energy throughout the day,” said DuBois. “It really helps set the tone for the day.”

DuBois encourages people to keep going even if it is hard and to make sure to have a routine for working out. She believes that without one, it is too easy to skip a day and then never end up doing it.

“Stick with it because eventually it will become part of your daily routine, and you will miss it if you don’t work out,” said DuBois.

DuBois never works out to music.

usiness teacher and DECA adviser Michael Jones started his fitness journey during basic training for the military. He served in the Army for 23 years, which allowed him to become very physically fit in both strength and endurance. During that time, his workouts revolved around the Army Physical Fitness Test, which consisted of push-ups, sit-ups and a two-mile run. Now, since he has retired from the military, he varies his workouts and focuses more on functionality.

“I focus on a combination of strength training and cardiovascular exercise. This blend helps maintain overall physical performance, muscle tone, endurance and long-term health,” said Jones. “[My workouts also] emphasize mobility, injury prevention and overall physical wellbeing.”

Jones can be found in the gym after school and usually goes five days a week for one hour each day. He enjoys going with his wife because it helps keep him accountable. He does not listen to music when he works out, as he prefers to be fully present and focused the whole time to achieve the most from his workouts.

“A consistent workout routine sharpens my focus and elevates my mood,” said Jones. “It creates a positive mental shift that carries throughout the rest of the day, improving both productivity and attitude.”

For Jones, working out is all about purpose, not entertainment.

Across Sioux Falls, nonprofit organizations are preparing for the busy season ahead. Expecting an even higher demand than previous years, how do they prepare? With recent government policy changes putting SNAP and WIC benefits at risk — and with them, many families’ food sources — this holiday season is feeling a little heavier than it has in the past. How can volunteers and ordinary people make a lasting difference in their community?

The holiday season, often called the season of giving, brings out the good in everyone; the gratitude and community that this season brings is unmatched.

“The holidays awaken our sense of gratitude and belonging. We gather with loved ones, reflect on blessings and feel a deeper responsibility to extend that warmth to those who may be struggling.

Giving becomes a natural extension of the season’s spirit,” said philanthropic leader and board member to many local nonprofits including the Ronald McDonald house, Harriet Yocum.

The season of giving, however, should not only be around the holidays: it should be year-round.

To make a substantial difference, consistency is key. No matter how big or small the contribution, consistency allows organizations to better plan for the future. For them, having people and a community they can count

on makes their work far more reliable for the people that they serve.

“True impact comes from consistency.

Whether through monthly contributions, ongoing volunteerism or advocacy, sustained engagement allows organizations to plan boldly and serve steadily. Giving shouldn’t be seasonal; it should be part of how we live our values year-round,” said Yocum.

With the recent government shutdown, many have found themselves wondering how they will be able to support their family. Going into this holiday season with that kind of uncertainty is unimaginable for many people, but regrettably, it is a reality for some this year. The SNAP and WIC programs that stand to lose funding are vital for a multitude of people.

“When essential programs are reduced or eliminated, the burden shifts to nonprofits and donors. Families face sharper needs, and organizations must stretch further to respond.

Economic uncertainty can temper giving, but it also underscores the urgency philanthropy becomes the safety net when public systems falter,” said Yocum.

Thousands of families are entering this season unsure if their family can afford a holiday meal, and it is up to people like Yocum to help pick up the slack.

The many nonprofit organizations throughout Sioux Falls are doing as much as they can to lift the strain and pressure off of these families.

Volunteers are a major reason that these nonprofit organizations have the ability to help so many people. From decade-long supporters to first-time volunteers, it is never too late to make a difference.

“Philanthropy begins with a single act of generosity. Your first gift, no matter the size, is a declaration that you believe in the dignity of others and the power of community.

It’s not about perfection, it’s about participation,” said Yocum.

There is so much that goes on behind the scenes at these organizations that most people would never know. The amount of work, spirit and dedication that these volunteers, board members and leaders show every day is inspiring.

The holidays are often the hardest time of year for so many, and it can be very difficult to ask for help. For people to put their pride aside and seek help with anything, from a single gift for their children or a safe place to live, it takes incredible courage.

“I wish more people understood the courage of those who seek help and the quiet heroism of those who provide it.

Behind every program are individuals who give their time, talent and heart to ensure dignity and hope are never lost,” said Yocum.

Pride is such a powerful thing; the people who are silently helping, who set aside their pride to help the people brave enough to ask for it, are the true miracle workers. There are also many challenges that come with providing help for these people; the holidays come with unrivaled generosity, but with that comes unmatched demand.

“The hardest part is ensuring that resources meet the surge in need without losing sight of long-term sustainability. It requires both compassion and discipline,” said Yocum.

So, whether I am someone looking to provide help to those who need it or I am someone who is seeking help for myself or my family, there are many challenges and blessings for all people involved.

The holiday season is a time of joy and happiness, and it is only right that everyone gets to experience that. No matter their income, housing status, color of their skin, religion they practice or the traditions they observe, everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the season of joy, the season of giving and the season of community that so many have the privilege of knowing. The only way that any of that is even remotely possible is because of people like Yocum: ordinary people who have the ability to give, the leaders and founders of these non-profits and the surrounding community.

For over 20 years, “Winter Wonderland” at Falls Park has been an adored part of the holiday season for thousands in Sioux Falls.

The light display originally started in 2003 and was an effort between Experience Sioux Falls, an organization working to promote city tourism, and the Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation department. Experience Sioux Falls employee Teri Schmidt and Mayor Dave Munson spearheaded the original display. Ever since, the elaborate light display has been a staple part of the holiday season for the Sioux Falls community, as well as those visiting for the winter holidays.

Led by the Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation department, the Winter Wonderland display takes many employees to put up. With the lighting event taking place

each year on the weekend before Thanksgiving, the decorating process begins in early October. Although it takes roughly eight weeks to get all the lights and decorations in place, the whole operation truly begins in the summer. It is necessary to start testing the lights and different features early on to ensure everything is ready for the layout.

It is the responsibility of the Parks Caretaker, who is on staff with Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation, to create the display and coordinate where each feature will go.

“As part of that caretaker’s duties, they create the display.

It’s coordinating where the candy canes are going and where the ornament is going to go. ‘Did the ornament work

here last year? Do we need to put it somewhere else?’ That’s kind of their job,” said Josh Johnson, the Park Operations Manager.

Creating the magical “Winter Wonderland” lights display is an immense task and takes months of effort from numerous individuals However, the large turnout makes it worth it; on nice weekends, 12,000 to 15,000 people go through the park.

It is clear that the community loves it, and it has become an important part of their holiday season.

“It’s something that gives our community great pride.

They continue to watch and see how it expands and the joy that it brings to our community. It’s critical to the experience of being in Sioux

Falls and being around the Falls—embracing the heart of our city,” said Johnson.

“There are over 29 miles of strings of lights, 415,000 LED lightbulbs, 100 light poles decorated and 268 trees decorated.”

With thousands of light bulbs and countless features, “Winter Wonderland” is an incredible representation of the hard work many put into making Sioux Falls the city that it is. The joyful holiday music combined with the breathtaking lights has become the perfect way to get Sioux Falls in the holiday spirit.

ed coats, thick gloves and a never-ceasing ringing: a sight common to grocery stores and shopping centers all across the nation during the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Starting in early November, the Salvation Army USA hosts the annual Red Kettle

Campaign, which raises funds for social support and services given to those in need of food, rent assistance, counseling and so much more.

The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 by Christian pastor William Booth with a call to preach to the less fortunate living on the streets of London.

This movement, tailored to converting and aiding those often looked down upon, such as thieves, drunkards and gamblers, caught fire.

joined the cause, penning the name ‘Salvation Army.’

Now active in over 130 countries, the Salvation Army continues to change countless lives by providing dozens of services.

Ringing the motto ‘Sharing is Caring,’ the Red Kettles are now a staple of the holiday season.

Volunteers encourage those passing by to donate to the evergrowing need to supply American families with essentials.

According to the Salvation Army, in 2023, Red Kettles across the nation raised an average of $2.7 million per day. As the Salvation Army’s largest fundraising event of the year, the campaign aids over 27 million people.

25 years ago, John Mogen became involved with organizing and supporting the Red Kettle campaign after years of organizing bell ringers and ringing himself. His church was heavily involved, and once he retired, he was asked to join the Salvation Army’s board. While he has taken on many

responsibilities with the Salvation Army itself, he remains a key influence for the Red Kettle campaign in Sioux Falls.

“I’ve continued to ring every Saturday at the South Minnesota Hy-Vee. Instead of the Salvation Army having to pay outside help, it saves money that can go to the people who need it,” said Mogen.

While dropping a few coins or bills into a giant kettle may not feel like it is making an impact, the results are immense.

“All the money stays

here [in the community] and helps people pay their rent, heat and for food and clothing. There are a lot of families that are really trying, but they just don’t have jobs that pay enough.

There are also lots of big families from other countries that come for help,” said Mogen.

It is important to note that many of those who walk past the Red Kettles without a donation often might be the very ones gaining from the campaign.

towards people that don’t give, it could be because they can’t afford to. They might be the ones receiving the help from the Salvation Army,” said Mogen.

The selfless acts and amount of dedication required to run this campaign are demanding, but the significance overshadows it.

“It’s not about us. It’s not about the Salvation Army. It’s about being the hands and feet of Jesus.

Just helping people in need, and we don’t try to take the credit because it’s the people that are donating.

We are the conduit; we’re how that money goes from the people of the community to the people that need it,” said Mogen.

Red Kettle ringers are in high demand, and plenty of volunteer shifts are available across Sioux Falls, from Hobby Lobby to Dillard’s. Natasha Letcher oversees The Salvation Army’s Sioux

Falls fundraising, including organizing the ringers for the kettles.

“We have over 30 different kettle locations around Sioux Falls. [Our shifts are] Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and they’re two hour shifts,” said Letcher.

Mogen and Letcher urge high schoolers to take the reins and become a catalyst for change in their community.

They encourage anyone interested in ringing to visit registertoring.com to sign up. “[When I volunteered last year] I realized how impactful the kettles were.

We got to see little kids running up, learning the gift of generosity. It was cool to see the impact every dollar that’s raised at the Red Kettles here in Sioux Falls has. We’re taking that and we’re pouring it right back into the Sioux Falls community,” said Letcher.

nce every four years, the United States hosts Olympic trials to determine the best athletes in the country.

This year, one of those trials was held in Sioux Falls.

In 2024, the Sioux Falls Sports Authority, in collaboration with USA Curling, made the decision to host the 2026 U.S. Olympic Curling trials at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. The main goals of hosting these trials in Sioux Falls were to bring an economic boost to the city and, most importantly, to grow the already large curling community in the area. This already prevalent group of curlers made their presence known in the first match of the pre-trials.

Ben Richardson, a member of Team Casper, a successful curling team, is competing to play in his first Winter Olympic Games. Richardson noticed that the atmosphere in his first pre-trial round was intense, thanks in part to the crowd and nerves. The enthusiastic crowd fueled Richardson, and he believes that the numbers will only grow. “[The environment] was awesome for a noon game on a Tuesday. It’s a pretty good crowd, pretty happy with them. I’m sure that [the environment] is only going to get better and the crowds are only going to get bigger. I love playing with crowds like this,” said Richardson.

On TV, curling may seem like a quiet and serious sport. In reality, all the players are trying to calm their nerves and emotions to perform at their best during pivotal moments. Tabitha Peterson competed in her second Winter Olympic trials and had to calm her nerves in her first match to help her team win.

“The first game is just so nerve-racking, and it’s so exciting, and it’s hard to calm those nerves sometimes and those amped-up emotions.

Especially with the way curling is, you kind of have to be really calm and collected. It’s not like you’re running out there on a football field and, like, running at people,” said Peterson, captain of Team Peterson, an accomplished curling team.

Every year, there are many prestigious curling events, such as the USA Curling National Championships and the Grand Slam of Curling Series. These events are very meaningful to curlers, and competitors dedicate massive amounts of time and effort to qualify and compete in them.

However, John Shuster, an Olympic gold medalist, believes that the Winter Olympic Games are the peak of sports competitions. The unique opportunity to represent your country while competing alongside other incredible athletes elevates the significance of the Olympics to Shuster. Shuster competed in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games and led his team to a historic first gold medal for the U.S. after losing four of their first six games. “[The Olympics] are the pinnacle of our sports. The chance for us in curling, we have World Championships each year, which is the pinnacle of our sport, but to actually go and compete in the pinnacle tournament alongside all of the other incredible Olympians in the other winter sports makes it extra special,” said Shuster.

The trials began with a round robin tournament with four male and female teams that qualified for the event in curling events prior to the trials. The male teams included Team Shuster, Team Casper, Team Dropkin and Team Hebert. The female teams included Team Johnson, Team Strouse, Team Cousins and Team Peterson. The two teams with the best record from the round robin then advanced to the finals: these wwteams included Team Casper and Team Shuster for the men and Team Peterson and Team Cousins for the women. The final match was a best of three series, and the winner would advance to the Olympic qualifier in Kelowna, British Columbia. Team Peterson and Team Casper advanced to Kelowna after winning their finals match. The women’s final lasted two matches while the men’s final lasted three and came down to the final throws. In order to advance to the Winter Olympics, Team Peterson and Team Casper must still advance through the Olympic qualifier in Kelowna. These two teams have completed a huge feat by advancing through these trials; however, they still have one more step to take before the opening ceremony.

Favorite Part: “My favorite thing on the cheer team is getting to know my teammates and growing with them.”

Cheer Rules: “[An important rule in cheer is that] you have to be able to take corrections from others to succeed with your stunt; it’s really crucial to be safe and grow as a team.”

LHS Crazies: “I think Lincoln has such a nice student section, and to be able to lead them at games is a great way to show school spirit. We start the cheers, but they are good with repeating. Yes, we may be doing it for the team, but I also feel like they’re cheering us on because in the end, we are cheering each other on. Our team is really positive about Lincoln. We all try to show the most school spirit, and our cheer team works really hard, just trying to hype up the crowd and bring the cheers back up.”

GREYSON DEELSTRA (11)

Motivation: “What motivates me to keep pushing during rough practices and games is my teammates around me, like they tell me to keep on going, and also the coaches pushing us to work harder.”

Practice: “Practice usually begins by us warming up together as a team, and then we work into drills and just usually get conditioning in as well.”

Teamwork: “Our team helps each other out by being motivational not only in the sport but also out of school and with schoolwork. The bonds on our team are very strong because everyone knows each other. We tell each other the truth about everything, and everybody’s close.”

Lessons: “Wrestling has taught me how to be more determined in my goals and set them in stone. Also, it taught me how to work as a team, even though wrestling is more of an individual sport.”

Motivation: “What motivates me to get up and go to practice is knowing that we’re supposed to be the best team.”

Teamwork: “I want to help the out by doing well, also by being a good role model. Most of the girls are younger than me, I try to do what’s right, and motivate them.”

Tradition: “[A tradition we have as a team is] our coach gets us gifts around the holidays, and we also have a Christmas party; it’s a tradition I enjoy.”

Memories: “A favorite memory I will always remember was during my first season at State, and one of my assistant coaches, a hairdresser, cut one of my senior teammates’ hair into a cute ponytail.“ Challenges: “Just because it’s cold outside, it doesn’t really affect much, unless it’s snowing and things go beyond plan.”

Challenges: “[An obstacle that I have is] when training indoors, I don’t really like how it gets so hot and humid inside.”

Motivation: “There is really no way personally motivate myself when trying to train for months away, all I do is just train, push myself, work hard and never give up. Someone who motivates me on the team is my coach, Jaws; he talks to me and tells me to keep my head in the game.”

Goals: “I’m working on my acceleration.

I need to lock in and do things I don’t want to do. Like skipping the 200 race. All you need to do is lock in and be serious about the sport and know why you’re there.”

Grit: “What keeps me showing up every day is the mindset, and my biggest goal is to get to her best and keep getting PR’s. Join track if you’re thinking about it. Don’t let anybody put you down, don’t compare yourself to others and do you. Just keep pushing and you will achieve higher things than us all.”

MELANIE NYBERG (12) Motivation: “The other girls on the team [motivate me before a lift], seeing how far they’ve grown, pushes me too. Seeing them achieve their goals and cheering me on when I achieve my goals feels great. Our team motivates each other mainly by yelling; in the gym, it’s very loud, and music is usually blaring. We’re all screaming and yelling encouraging words; even if you’re going through a hard lift, there will always be someone telling you you’re doing great.”

Change: “My mindset [has changed since] when I first joined was to get into the gym and start lifting, but now I’ve set good goals like progressing over time since I’ve been in it since 7th grade. Just seeing all the progress I’ve made and goals set and met is a stronger feeling than before.”

Goals: “A goal I have currently is working towards the 1,000-pound club. I’m really close to achieving it, but I’m working towards that.

Although I have a back injury, I’m still pushing through and pushing to get it done.”

Lessons: “[Powerlifting has] really taught me how much drive and work you can put into something. I didn’t know I had it in me to go out there and give it my all. I have shocked myself with how much I’m actually doing. It brought out a sense of drive, determination and self-confidence that I did not see before.”

It is almost a given that students have sat in the bleachers at least once in their lifetime, knowing how good it feels to cheer others on, why not be the one who is getting cheered for? Winter is coming up, and we might want to just stay cozy and perhaps sip hot chocolate.

In reality, we should choose to participate in other activities this winter as well. There are so many amazing sports to choose from.

restling is a sport that represents the indomitable human spirit in its true fullness. From showing up each and every day, even when one does not want to, to making unbearable weight cuts and driving long hours to compete, one must have the utmost dedication. This dedication, however, is not just something that the athletes take on; the coach must also remain dedicated to best instill the trait in their wrestlers. The most undeniable example of this is LHS’s new girls wrestling coach, Sawyer Hoffman.

Hoffman has been a wrestler for the majority of his life, competing at all levels from peewee all the way to collegiate wrestling at Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSUM).

At MSUM, he added an impressive 16-16 debut record to his trophy room.

“I started when I was four years old and competed up until college. After college, I coached down in Phoenix, Arizona for a year. Then we decided to come back, and the middle school program was starting out, so I started the program here. One thing led to another, and I’ll be at [LHS] this year,” said Hoffman.

Throughout his journey on the mat, he has mastered the resolve and zeal that wrestlers carry with them and represent in every action, traits that are incredibly apparent in his coaching style. Wrestling, for Hoffman and many others, is more than the pins and strong records. The sport changes the very backbone of one’s identity and requires one to be resilient, defiant and diligent.

“If you’re wrestling in high school, it’s in your body, so everyone’s there to compete.

The travel aspect and the camaraderie of the [LHS] team is exciting as well,” said Hoffman.

The LHS girls wrestling team is currently entering a transition period with Hoffman coming in as coach. Prior to this year, LHS girls wrestling hosted

a variety of teachers as coaches, all bearing major successes for the team, such as Abby Berke, the girls’ coach, and Mark Ernster, the boys’ coach. The girls’ team did not do horribly last year, placing, but struggled with recruitment, ending the season last year with only four remaining wrestlers. Despite different styles and different coaching experiences, one thing remained true no matter who blew the whistle each afternoon on the mat: winning must be in the wrestlers’ blood, and dedication has to be their life force on and off season, on and off the mat and whether or not they are competing. The team uniting to represent this strength and discipline only makes them perform better and succeed.

Hoffman has many hopes and aspirations for his new team at LHS. These include succeeding in the state tournament and focusing on providing the best coaching that he can to ensure individual progress for his wrestlers throughout the entire season. Along with this, he hopes to add more athletes and continue growing the sport at LHS. With only a handful of athletes in prior seasons being solid state contenders, a major goal Hoffman has is to bring that number up and create a winning tradition with LHS Girls Wrestling, such as that of LHS Track and Field and LHS Football.

“I would say a longer-term goal, for this year anyway, is to get four to five girls up on the podium or more if possible… I would like, in the next three to four years, for us to be a top-five team in the state,” said Hoffman.

Wrestling changes in many ways across each and every season, whether it be the moves each athlete employs, the style of the coach, or which school wins. But at LHS, one aspect of Hoffman’s program that will not change is hard work. A winning season is right around the corner for LHS.

Craving an absurdly sweet treat? Need a “little something” to tide you over this holiday season? This movie dessert lineup is the best way to spread Christmas cheer, better than singing loud for all to hear.

(Adapted from Amy Stevenson and Food Network Kitchen) - Salt - 1 box spaghetti - ½ stick unsalted butter - ¼ cup heavy cream - ¼ cup chocolate syrup (save more for drizzling) - ¼ cup maple syrup (save more for drizzling) - 1 handful sprinkles - Mini marshmallows (for topping) - M&Ms (for topping) - Candy corn (for topping) - 2 chocolate or strawberry toaster pastries, toasted and broken up - Any additional candies of choice

1. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Cook the spaghetti according to the box directions.

2. At the same time, heat the cream and butter in a saucepan until the butter is melted. Stir in the chocolate syrup, maple syrup and a pinch of salt. Bring to a simmer until the pasta finishes cooking (five minutes).

3. Save ¼ cup of pasta water and drain the pasta.

4. Add the cooked pasta to the saucepan and stir until it is completely coated in sauce. Add some reserved pasta water if the pasta seems too dry.

5. Divide the pasta into three or four servings and stir in sprinkles.

6. Top the pasta with more chocolate and maple syrup, mini marshmallows, M&Ms, candy corn and crushed toaster pastries.

- 2 scoops chocolate ice cream - 2 scoops vanilla ice cream - 2 scoops strawberry ice cream - Mini marshmallows - Maraschino cherries - Chocolate syrup (for drizzling) - Canned whipped cream 1. To a large bowl, add all the ice cream and a desired amount of mini marshmallows.

2. Top the ice cream with cherries and chocolate syrup.

3. Cover the entire sundae with whipped cream and enjoy.

(Adapted from Stephanie Gravalese and the Taste of Home) - ¾ cups butter (softened and divided) - 3 cups sugar - 1 can evaporated milk (5 oz) - 1 package white baking chips - 1 jar marshmallow creme - 1 teaspoon vanilla extract - Red gel food dye (must be gel) 1. Line a 13x9 inch pan with foil or wax paper.

Cover the lining with butter or baking spray.

2. Combine the sugar, milk and butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a rapid boil and stir consistently. Boil for around 4 minutes and then remove the pan from heat.

3. Add the baking chips and marshmallow creme until both are melted. Stir in the vanilla extract and red food dye until a deep red color is achieved.

4. Spread the mixture into the prepared pan.

Refrigerate until firm (one or two hours).

5. Using the foil or wax paper, lift the fudge out of the pan. Remove the foil or paper and cut the fudge into 2x2 inch squares.

The heart of the gathering are the movies. Curate a diverse range of movies in advance to fully capture the essence of the holiday and cater to different tastes. Christmas is right around the corner, which means the usual traditions are in full swing. Decorating cookies, sledding and

by Dena Tarrell drinking hot chocolate are some of the festive ways people get into their holiday spirit. Gingerbread house building also falls under that category. I am not one of those people. I have never built a gingerbread house, let alone decorated one. This year, I am going to begin my own tradition of building a gingerbread house and explain the simplest steps for assembling and Ingredients included in the Classic Gingerbread House Kit from decorating a gingerbread house. This will ensure that anyone Target: who wants to have their go at building a gingerbread house Gingerbread house pieces will be able to do so.

Pre-made white icing Piping bag Gumdrops Step 1: Prepare the icing by making sure it is softened and then Holiday lights candy pouring it into a piping bag. Do so by cutting a large corner off the Holly berry candy icing bag. To make it easier to fill the piping bag, place it in a cup Gummy trees and pull the edges of the bag over the cup.

Step 2: Gather all of the gingerbread pieces. Break apart the door and gable pieces. Before assembling the gingerbread house, decorate pieces as desired (windows, designs, etc.)

Step 3: Grab the front and back wall pieces. Flip them over (door frame facing away) and pipe icing in a zig zag pattern along the sides of the pieces.

Step 4: Place the front wall upright and connect the side walls using the icing. Repeat with the back wall. Hold the walls in place for two minutes, then let them set for 15 minutes.

Step 5: Pipe zig zag lines onto the peaks of the front and back wall.

Step 6: Place the roof pieces on top of the walls and hold in place for one minute. Then pipe a line between the two roof pieces and hold in place, again, for one minute.

Step 7: Attach the chimney to the roof by piping a line on the bottom and placing it on the roof. Then pipe two lines on the back edges of the door and hold against the front wall.

Step 8: Pipe two thin lines on the edge of each of the gables and hold against the front wall, above the door, for one minute.

Step 9: Once all the pieces are assembled and the icing is dried, decorate with candy and icing as desired.

These steps, if followed closely, should yield the best results. Yet, I did not find success. After hours of trying to secure the walls together, I could not make it past the third step. The icing did not dry in a way that would solidly hold the structure together. After an attempt to place the roof, my house collapsed. I admitted defeat and instead ate the candy that came with the gingerbread house and watched a holiday movie to console myself. I do hope that if you choose to take on such a problematic challenge, such as building a gingerbread house, that you will experience much better results than I have. Maybe you can even make it as far as decorating your house, instead of opting for consuming the decorations. Even in the face of adversity, I did learn that you will not always succeed in your task, but it is always worth it to try.

If the challenge of building a gingerbread house looms too large in your mind, there are plenty of other holiday activities to partake in. Watching movies, baking cookies, skating and sledding are all great options to spend time with family and friends. Or if you were really looking forward to decorating your perfectly built gingerbread house, there are plenty of prebuilt options. However you decide to spend your holidays, surround yourself with the ones you love and do not waste hours trying to stick some walls of gingerbread together, like I did.

It happens every year, and you have definitely been there, scrolling through your phone on the hunt for the perfect gift for your friend, mom, dog or sibling, with screen time adding up with each swipe of your finger. Starting with a cult classic, Child’s Play Toys is on both Phillips and Western Avenue. It is the perfect spot for the kids in any family or those who are kids at heart. A store catered to children, of course, offers many different types of toys for kids of all ages. From the latest board games, trendiest infant clothes and best-selling books, to popular new toys, it is truly a one-stop shop for everything kid-related. According to Visa Business and Economic Insights’ (VBEI) annual holiday forecast, that’s the estimated average amount that a U.S. consumer will spend on holiday gifts in 2025.

With the holiday season now in full swing, people of all ages are scrambling to find the “perfect gifts” for their loved ones. While it is fairly common knowledge that people generally spend more money around the holidays, we never really stop to question just how much more, and some of the reasons why.

First off, the amount. VBEI predicts that, between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31, there will be a 4.6% increase in total U.S. retail sales, a figure which excludes automotive dealers, gas stations and restaurants.

Certain demographics are also reported to spend even more, with a forecasted 21% increase in baby boomers’ spending.

However, these spikes aren’t happening just because people have more money; on the contrary, it is because goods simply cost more. With a rate of 3.0% as of September 2025, inflation is certainly the driving force behind this year’s spending increase.

Additional factors that contribute to the uptick in spending are when consumers are beginning to purchase their gifts, as well as how.

According to VBEI, “...more than half (57.7%) of all consumers report that they are starting [to purchase gifts] in October, citing store promotions and sales as well as product availability as key factors.” Additionally, 48% of shoppers are planning to do the majority of their shopping online, which oftentimes increases overall sales because of incentives like free shipping.

The “why” is pretty simple: increased exposure and consumerist culture. The majority of large retail stores tend to release their Christmas collections immediately following Halloween; some will even have holiday decorations up on their websites before that. While some smaller retailers wait until closer to Thanksgiving, one receives a near-constant exposure to holiday decorations when they enter a Target or Walmart.

Another major factor is the society we live in. There is such an emphasis placed on finding the “perfect gift” or spending money to update/ change your decorations every year when, in reality, none of

that is necessary. Yes, finding a present that makes your friend or parent smile is arguably one of the best parts of the season, but you do not need to spend hundreds of dollars to do so when a handmade gift will accomplish the same goal.

As the holiday season continues its approach, here are three easy ways to avoid getting caught up in the consumerism craziness: 1.

Reuse decorations There is no need to purchase new holiday decorations every year. If you absolutely need new baubles, though, try to source them sustainably and less expensively (think thrift stores, asking relatives if they have decorations they don’t want anymore, etc.).

2.

Set a budget One of the easiest ways to avoid overspending is to decide on a set amount you want to spend. By consciously making this choice and holding yourself accountable to it, you’ll better avoid overspending on little, unnecessary things.

3.

Focus on quality over quantity While investing in quality pieces may be more expensive up front, you’ll save yourself money in the long run because you won’t have to purchase new things every year.
