JOURNALISM

In Journalism I learned how to be a reporter, interviewer, and how to enhance my writing skills. these are the pieces I am most proud of. Now that the leaves are falling and it’s getting colder, one of the best childhood attractions has opened! Roca scary farms, the place to go to hang out with friends and get scared for some fun in Roca Nebraska. Roca used to be a very popular spot amongst families and teenagers, but as we grow older it feels that something is missing or it isn't what it used to be. We ask ourselves why this is, is it because we’re older now or is it because the haunted attractions lack in some places. What can we do to make memories here like we did when we were young?

Roca berry farm has been around since 1980, they started as a small pumpkin patch and tourist attraction but now they've grown into being busy every single night in the fall. They offer many things in the daytime like corn mazes, games, and most importantly…pumpkins! But once the sun sets and the temperature drops the real fun starts. Roca has scare actors come out in spooky costumes and go around making people scream! The haunted attractions open including the haunted hayride, the haunted house, and the psycho path. These attractions were a staple growing up but things have changed since then. In the past years Roca has experienced some major changes due to the crowd that comes in, mainly consisting of young teenagers. Sadly there was an incident where a girl needed hospital treatment due to the unkindness of others. Because of this Roca had set an age limit on who is allowed to come in without guardian supervision and now has police that supervise every year. The once safe and fun place has become something where anything can happen. People may say Roca has been ruined and while people contribute a lot to some problems, Roca has had the same attractions since they started doing the haunt. Because of this people feel bored or think it’s a waste of money because they saw it last year and the year before that. So what is the Roca budgeting like? And why have they kept the same three attractions without changing anything up? Unfortunately there isn’t much information as to why or how much the attraction has to budget. Tess Noecker mentioned “I wish the lines weren't as long and things like food were cheaper, water isn’t even free”. So considering the pricing of food, drinks, and admission we could assume they could afford to change things up a bit. Keco Ontiveros states that “it’s alright i haven't been there in awhile, it’s not the best place to go for scary things like that”. This is crucial for an establishment that is only open a month out of the year, less and less people will decide to spend their money on waiting in lines in the cold and more often wet weather just to be scared once or twice. Both Keco and Tess elaborated that neither of them would attend every year as they grow older. While Roca is a great place to have fun and make memories it seems that the younger generations will be making them for the kids that have grown out of it.

Lincoln Nebraska is starting the spooky season by participating in Socktober! Socktober is something that has stemmed from Skate For Change created by Mike Smith, founder of The Bay. Skate For Change has been around for 10 years and started in Lincoln. Mike wanted to create change since he was in highschool. For help, he went to his basketball coach where his coach then took him to West O. They stopped under a bridge where a group of homeless people resided. Mike went around asking everybody of their experiences and what they needed. The one thing they needed most was socks! From then on Mike went around collecting socks to give out to people in need, and managed to recruit many people to help his cause. Socktober is now global in 110 cities and 11 countries. During this chilly time of the year kids, teenagers, and adults go around specifically downtown Lincoln and hand out socks to the homeless people on skateboards, bikes, cars, etc… If you’d like to participate, the first step you can take is simple, all you have to do is buy a pair of socks. You can donate to The Bay or hand them out yourself! To help get your community involved go to the website “Happysocktober.com” for further information.

Behind The Scenes Of Journalism during journalism I experienced so many different things each day. I thought we’d be writing stories and making deep meaning of something silly like “A Cat With A Hat”. I quickly learned that was not the case and instead we were diving into the life of a journalist and reporter. we had a person from journal star come and talk to us about his job there. we were able to interview him like he’d interview his clients. My top two favorite moments were when we got to write stories reporting on different things and go to the school of journalism. At UNL we got to record a podcast (sneak peek for next semester) It was so fun and I'd definitely do it again. 04

DIGITAL DESIGN

IN DIGITAL DESIGN I LEARNED SO MANY DIFFERENT THINGS ABOUT THE ADOBE SUITE SOFTWARE. HERE ARE SOME PIECES I AM MOST PROUD OF.

URBAN INK

SKATE FOR CHANGE 05

Behind the Screen Digital Design went by so fast. we learned things like how to photoshop and manipulate pictures. as well as the more complicated things like morphing things together and making personal portfolio’s for ourselves. One thing I loved the most was once you learned how to do something you could use that exact skill on a completely different project. I’m really happy with the projects I have gotten to make in digital design and plan to use these skills in the future. 06

TAKE CHARGE

TAKE CHARGE HAS TOUGHT ME A MILLION AND ONE THINGS THAT I WILL NEED TO KNOW IN THE FUTURE. INSURANCE, CREDIT CARDS, BANKS, STOCKS, AND SO MUCH MORE. HERE ARE SOME PROJECTS THAT I HAVE LOVED

Into The Future

In all honesty take charge was my least favorite class because it was so technical instead of creative like my other classes. But I learned that while it may be my least favorite I should pay attention because the things we are learning are super important and will set us up for adulthood. I leaned a lot when it came to the future of my life and how I need to start planning sooner than later. We had our own mock interview as if we were applying for a job which was super fun and a humbling experience. I appreciated being able to apply the things I have already been doing to school and figuring out ways I could do them better. I also began to took the class more seriously when I realized our parents didn’t have a class like this to learn how to be an adult, so paying attention in class and taking these opportunities that they didn’t have is all worth it, because life doesn’t end when you’re 17.

Master Behind The Mind

content creation contained a large amount of group work. My favorite part was how we got to create and execute things like making a sponsorship ad, working on SAMF, and more...it really allowed us to be creative and work together like you would in a workplace. I learned a lot of things like editing videos and pictures as well as how to produce something properly. I enjoyed how after a project our peers would critique and compliment our work so for the future we know what to 1 continue and change.

SKATE SHOP 11

Making It.

Skate Shop will always hold a special place in my heart. We learn to be young entrepreneurs by designing, creating, and selling clothing for Bay High. We recently got our apparel in and were able to model it, my classmates did great and some even took to the photos! I love working together and creating something that no one else has done before. I’ve learned how to buy smartly and divide costs among what needs to be done to the clothing in hand. this speaks to me because I myself am trying to start a clothing brand to help with payments of my life. Rattie has been an amazing teacher that has guided us to become who we are.
