BUILDING WITH PURPOSE AT EAST
Lincoln East High School students lend a helping hand to a community preschool program located at Belmont Elementary School.
The school’s Introduction to Construction class is building a shed for Educare. The shed will help store outdoor play equipment for some of Lincoln’s littlest learners.
“It feels good that what we’re building has a purpose and we’re not just going to throw it away afterward,” East junior Maguire said.
“I think this is a great opportunity for them to make a fullscale building from start to finish,” East Skilled and Technical Sciences instructor Robert Babcock said.
The LPS Operations team invited the Spartans to take on the project during the second semester of the 2023 -2024 school year. Students were able to apply what they learned in class like tool safety, cutting parts and drawing blueprints.
“I’d say it’s pretty fun to work together as a team,” East sophomore Henry said. “It’s good leadership skills to build teamwork and work together.”
East’s project is one example of the mission of Skilled and Technical Sciences (STS) curriculum – ensuring students get hands-on experience to learn and prepare for the future workforce.
“We believe that this process would provide excellent real life opportunities for our kids. They’d have the responsibility to design, then construct the storage shed based on a client’s real needs,” LPS Operations Director Scott Wieskamp said.

Building Blocks: SEL family activities to try at home
At Lincoln Public Schools, we know students with strong social and emotional skills thrive. They succeed academically, personally and relationally. We use the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum Second Step to teach these life skills to students in grades Pre-K through seventh.
Our SEL lessons are a collaboration between students, their families and educators. You can help us reinforce and build upon the lessons we teach at school by participating in these activities at home with your child.
This semester, your student is learning about empathy, kindness and problem-solving.
Partner with us to help your child excel by trying these activities with your family:
• When accidents occur at home, take time to apologize and encourage your child to do the same, using the new phrases they learned at school.
• Let your child see you taking a moment to feel calm at home when things are busy or stress-
ful. For example, say, “Today was a really busy day. I’m going to take a few slow breaths to help me feel calm.” Invite your child to join you.
• Ask your child what member of their school community they had empathy for and what kind act they chose to do for that person.
• Ask your child what questions
they can ask to find out how someone feels and what they may want or need. Discuss how checking in on someone’s feelings is a great way to show you care about them.

Leland and Kevin: Learning together
Leland and Kevin kicked off their mentoring relationship at the Irving Rec Center learning a new skill – playing ping pong.
“We were playing ping pong, pool and some air hockey,” Leland said. “Basically, me and Kevin were getting used to playing ping pong because it was my first time playing.”
Leland was in sixth grade then, and learning something new was a good way to put his mind at ease.
“I was pretty nervous because it was my first ever TeamMate. I was happy and nervous at the same time,” he said.
Now the pairs often meet in the library – another place where eighthgrade student Leland can feed this curious mind.
“He’s into anime,” Kevin said. “That’s not the only thing. If something’s interesting, he will research it and learn more about it. He knows the librarians quite well.”
Leland also has several niche interests and loves to be creative.
He recently helped design a T-shirt for the track team at Irving.
“No one asked me to do it,” Leland said. “I just wanted to do it, because I want to sew prom dresses in the future and wedding dresses and all that.”
Kevin said that Leland’s creativity extends to their pool game too.
“We’re creative. We don’t play pool exactly as it should be played,” the mentor added.
Kevin credits mentoring with getting him out of his retirement bubble. He currently teaches a class at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. His mentoring relationship has also influenced his classroom. He shared with his students how to build vocabulary using a game he first played with Leland.
“It’s called Blurt! You have the definition and you have to come up with the
word,” Kevin said. “He likes to play that. I love words and he must love words too, which bodes well for him.”
Leland takes pride in knowing he has also impacted Kevin’s life in just two years. Kevin has been equally influential in his life, including bringing him out of his shell.
“When I started sixth grade, I didn’t
want any teachers to talk to me, but when Kevin came, I wanted to talk to everybody after that,” Leland added.
The pair plans to continue their bond as Leland transitions into Southeast High School, which is the same school Kevin graduated from 50 years ago.

J.D. and the Great Barber Battle

This early reader chapter book focuses on a dynamic character, his quest to recover from a horrible haircut, and the competitive, entrepreneurial spirit that arises within him during his quest. J.D., a spunky and vibrant young boy, is the victim of a bad haircut given by his mom the night before school begins. The author’s compelling storytelling pulls readers into J.D.’s world and the realities of his, and other young African American boys’, needs for haircuts that work with their hair type, look cool, and fit their personalities. Black and white illustrations support the story and will help draw in reluctant readers. If you can’t put this book down and don’t want it to end, don’t worry: this is the first book in a planned series!
Just Be Cool, Jenna Sakai

Compelling characters make this story instantly relatable. The fact that the main characters are Japanese American provides children who are also of this culture the rare opportunity to see themselves in a book that is engaging and fun to read. While there are lessons about Japanese culture to be learned from this story, it is the fact that it is an amazing story that could happen to children of any culture and not a piece of historical fiction that makes this book so important. Providing Japanese American children with a story they can see themselves in while reading purely for enjoyment is a wonderful opportunity not to be missed. Written by a diverse author and excellent in every way, this book is a must-have for school collections.
Somewhere Between Bitter and Sweet

Pen (Penelope) Predo has only ever wanted to work in and hopefully someday run her family’s restaurant, Nacho’s Tacos. Her father has other plans, though, and has given managerial duties to her brother while Pen is supposed to be studying nursing at the community college. Meanwhile, Xander Amaro meets Pen on what will be his first, and her last, night working at Nacho’s. Xander is undocumented and has been abandoned by both of his parents - he lives in fear of being discovered and deported. Through a series of encounters, Pen and Xander become close and fall in love. They each come with their own secrets and emotional turmoil that they eventually confess to each other. While they do support each other through their bad times and give of themselves to make the other’s dreams come true, they also become stronger individually as well through reflection and hard work. Themes of found family, parental expectations, first love, and immigration intertwine to make a captivating story celebrating Chicanx culture.

Energy Conservation Superstars
Lincoln Public Schools tracks the energy performance of the more than eight million square feet of facilities managed by the district through an Energy Star Portfolio Manager tool. This tool not only allows the district to monitor electricity, gas and water consumption, but it also generates an ENERGY STAR score.
This score is an external benchmark for assessing the performance of commercial buildings and is measured on a scale from 1-100. It is calculated based on the energy efficiency of the building compared to similar buildings across the United States.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of ENERGY STAR, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is offering special, one-time recognition to any organization that earns EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification for five or more buildings in 2022. Eligible organizations gain “membership” to ENERGY STAR Certification Nation depending on how many buildings they certify in 2022.
Lincoln Public Schools earned ENERGY STAR certification for nine buildings this year, making the organization an official member of Certification Nation.
To earn the ENERGY STAR, a building must be independently verified to operate more efficiently than 75% of similar properties nationwide. ENERGY STAR certified buildings use an average of 35 percent less energy and are responsible for 35 percent less carbon dioxide emissions than typical buildings.
LPS has nearly 50 buildings eligible for certification based on having an ENERGY STAR score of 75 or higher.
Many of our schools adopted various initiatives this year, which significantly improved their ENERGY STAR scores.
Some upgrades our building made to be more energy efficient include:
• Installing geothermal well fields, heating and cooling its buildings with high efficiency geothermal heat pumps.
• Placing energy recovery units to recover the heat from exhaust air and condition ventilation air.
• Replacing old windows with new ones with better insulation and less air leakage.
• Adding LED lighting for energy efficiency.
• Utilizing building automzation systems to ensure equipment is running at peak efficiency.

Eight secrets to the best summer ever

As students leave school for the summer, so returns the challenge for families to keep them in routines, engaged and active. How can you keep them healthy, happy and on the track to the best summer ever? Here are some ideas to consider:
If you build it, they will come. Kids will thrive inside a plan you build together. There is a reason school works. children feel safer because they feel and do their best with a set plan of action. It also helps you avoid the whining and negotiations that naturally happen when kids are unsure what they’ll get to do.
Post the schedule, including the times for their favorite activities. Devise a schedule and stick to it as much as possible, especially when these activities are key to social time with friends. As a mom of two gaming-obsessed guys, building in device times with both beginning and end times helps eliminate distractions and battles when it’s time to get offline and do something else. It can also be good for us as adults, right? This way, everyone gets to experience summer and give their thumbs a needed break.
Set in place both play and purpose. Each family is unique in what interests and commitments you have for work and play schedules. Kids need to feel they have a purpose and are contributing. Depending on age and skill, give kids a mini purpose or chore each day. Also, consider giving them a scheduled, focused playtime without screens. You will be amazed at the impact of these two items being built into their plan.
Make the libraries your best friend. Summer reading programs are vibrant in Lincoln. They give our kids a great way to fill those “I’m bored” moments and secretly help prevent the summer learning slide. Check-in with your closest library or school library (many of which have summer hours) to find out about their special events or other free family follies. Also, think about adding reading or writing time to your kids’ schedules. There are many ways to expand the power of reading and writing to help create the best summer ever including silly writing prompts and story-telling around the fire pit. If they struggle to find new books, curate a little set of items to read during a library journey. You just might help them find a new favorite author. Librarians also are great helpers if you need ideas.
Work with your kids to build a summer Lincoln area bucket list. This can help make summer include some goal setting and incorporate fun, free ways to explore in your own hometown. If there are special interest areas, explore short camps or community programs. Check out free offerings around town. Social media event calendars can be a start. Creative mini-camps abound in our community that might be a perfect bucket list opportunity for your child. Many offer reduced rates based on income, so ask if affordability is holding you back from exploring.
Look for good alternatives to beat the heat. It’s easy to forget that summer heat is right around the corner on these cool spring days. Finding alternative activities to keep kids active and indoors may be a must. Besides the many opportunities around town, you can also try www.gonoodle. com which most kids already love from brain breaks in class. This site can work wonders in engaging kids for indoor activities within small areas at home. Finally, consider doing “Found Item Funfest” where kids and adults are encouraged to make games from items around your home and teach the game to other members of the household. Outdoor obstacle courses or inside scavenger hunts, whatever works for your crew. Most adults have honed their skills by playing “Find the car keys,” but you must start somewhere. We’re teaching them life skills they’ll use later, right?
Take advantage of the MyLink app. If you are looking for resources such as summer feeding opportunities, food distribution, medical care, or even daycare openings, add the My Link or MyLNK app to your mobile device. It contains a myriad of resources for families of every income and is free.
Remember that what kids want more than ever is time with you. We still have other commitments to meet, but our kids want us more than they want “stuff,” so don’t get lost in the pursuit of the shiny. This time with our kids is so fleeting. Make the most of what opportunities you have. They need us now more than ever. Make it their best summer ever, just by being present when you are with them.

LPS plants the seed to grow future educators with Aspiring Educators of Diversity Symposium
Lincoln Public Schools is developing a local pipeline of diverse educators with students in PreK-12 schools, hoping that early efforts will help meet future goals of increasing staff diversity.
LPS hosted its second annual Aspiring Educators of Diversity Symposium in late March. The symposium aims to amplify the importance of diverse educators as role models, advocates and leaders.
“It gives our current staff of diversity an opportunity to mentor and scholars the opportunity to see motivated professionals of color doing what they love,” LPS Associate Superintendent for Human Resources Vann Price said.
“We hope that they’re able to see the opportunities that we have at Lincoln Public Schools,” added Marco Pedroza, supervisor of Secondary Personnel for LPS.
The event featured different sessions to give participants a glimpse into the education field, including one from Lincoln High’s RE4L Future Educators Group. Lincoln High senior Marlana helped lead the group’s workshop about the need for diverse representation.
“I think it’s awesome because I want to become a teacher and I’m going to be able to use some teaching styles with other students and my peers,” she said.
The symposium also aligns with the school district’s larger goal of hiring diverse staff as part of its All Means All action plan, which organizers believe starts now by realizing potential and cultivating talent in our classrooms.
“We owe this to all of the future scholars who will benefit from growing, learning, and thriving within a diverse environment,” Price said.
“It’s awesome to see that they’re actually making steps within students, within LPS already to achieve that goal,” Marlana added.
