Learning blooms for Beattie students in garden

Beattie Elementary School students are growing more than just Ogallala strawberries, red jewel cabbage and early butternut squash in their community garden.

They are also planting seeds for valuable life skills like work ethic, patience and perseverance.

Beattie Principal Julie Lee said the garden has benefited thousands of students over the past 23 years. Plants, trees and flowers are located on three sides of the building, and numerous fruits and vegetables are included in a large section along Worthington Avenue.

“It’s such an amazing part of our school culture here,” Lee said. “We use it on a daily basis. We’ll hear on the communications radio that a teacher is taking their class to the garden, and it might be to have a math lesson or to let the kids do some reading. It’s used in so many different ways, and the kids love having it here. It’s really wonderful.”

Lincoln resident Mike Hillis spearheaded the garden project in 2000 after he volunteered in his son’s kindergarten classroom. He became sad when he heard a student say tomatoes came from a Styrofoam package in a supermarket. He decided to form a garden to help them learn where food truly comes from and discover native Nebraska plants and flowers.

The project has flourished since then. The Worthington Avenue section includes themed areas such as the green sea garden, pollinator garden and contemplation garden. A sundial, colorful mosaic sculptures and a small boat named NEBobcat1 are featured alongside fruits, vegetables, plants and grasses.

The Platte River garden runs along the entire Calvert St. side of the building and includes many trees and flowers by a trail. A walking path garden stretches down Stockwell St. and has trees, flowers and native grasses.

Fifth-grade student Penny said the outdoor classrooms have been a fun place to learn about the world.

“The garden is full of family community friendship, and it’s just like, I mean, they have names of the trees and plants. And if you just look around and notice the small things, it’s really beautiful,” Penny said.

Third-grade student Emek has also enjoyed his outdoor experiences. He was in the school’s garden club last year. He was happy to learn his plants had remained healthy and fruitful over the summer.

“It’s very exciting that some stuff has bloomed,” Emek said.

Third-grade teacher Lee Dreyer said the garden has helped students like

Penny and Emek in academic, social and emotional ways.

“It’s a place that provides so many different opportunities for students,” Dreyer said. “It gives them room to walk outside and enjoy nature, and it has a real calming presence for them. It helps them decompress and cope with anything that might be going on in their lives.”

Dreyer said students benefit from having ownership stakes in the garden. They oversee different sections each year based on grade level.

Penny said students are aware that the garden connects everyone at Beattie.

“It’s not just a one-grade thing,” Penny said. “It’s a full-family thing.”

Lee said the garden has offered more than just carrots, hostas and hydrangeas for Beattie students and parents to enjoy. It has also provided a place to grow a strong neighborhood and school community.

“Our biggest supporters are our neighbors and families,” Lee said. “They really value what we have here. It’s so nice to see that, because it shows what an amazing school we have.”

TeamMates of the Month Christine and Sara: A positive pairing

When Christine met her sixthgrade mentee Sara in November of 2020, they had to use their imaginations; their faces were masked. It would be more than a year before what Sara called their “face reveal.”

“I think both of us were like, ‘That’s not what I thought you were going to look like!’” Christine said.

Walking side by side around the school when the weather was nice was a great way to get to know each other. Christine discovered their age difference mattered very little.

“I think the biggest thing that has surprised me and continues to surprise me, is that we have so many things in common.”

Sara agrees.

“I was just about to say that. We just kept talking and talking and we’d say, ‘Me too!’ We talk about things and they just click.”

They learn from each other, sometimes through books. Early on, Sara

shared her love of Japanese graphic novels.

“The characters face a lot of strug gles but they always, in the end, get through it,” Sara said.

Since Christine is a writer, they picked out a graphic novel to read together starring a strong character who liked to draw. Sara liked it so much she got her own copy.

“Sara is game to try anything, to talk about anything,” Christine said. “She can see there’s more than one way to look at something. I’m learning from her all the time!”

Sara says it is clear what she gains from her friendship with Christine.

“I think when I’m with you I learn stuff I will carry on for the rest of my life. You always see the good in stuff. You’re always very positive and that’s a quality that a lot of people need.”

Christine credits Sara for keeping life in perspective.

“The morning I got the call from the doctor’s office about my cancer diagnosis, there was one thing I was certain of: ‘It’s my morning to meet with Sara and I’m going.’ It wasn’t to comfort myself, it was more like, this is part of life too. We didn’t talk about my diagnosis.

We just talked like always.” They started a list last summer of all the things they plan to do and see together after Sara graduates from high school. They’ll keep filling it, because Sara says, they will “definitely” be friends after graduation.

Wellness has gone to the dogs

If you visit your child’s school, you might notice that there is a bit of an animal theme for 2023-2024. Lincoln Public Schools Wellness, in collaboration with several departments, has created a visual arts campaign featuring all types of animals.

You might see animals with a message about kindness, encouraging students to take brain breaks, talking about music or supporting sleep habits. All of these components are part of our wellness plan to support efforts toward physical and emotional self-care for both students and staff.

Two years ago, we found that students went wild for wellness featuring staff pets. This year we are expanding that feel by adding some fun visual arts with animals doing activities. So, keep an eye peeled for animal imagery everywhere at schools.

LPS is also fortunate to have 91 pet therapy teams participating in the pet therapy program. All pet therapy teams are required to pass the canine good citizenship training test, maintain current vaccination records and receive certification through a pet therapy certifying organization.

Some teams have additional certifications for therapeutic training, such as reading thera py dogs. The dogs are accompanied by their human handler and are not left alone with students or allowed to move independently within the schools for added safety.

Thanks to health office intake data provided by families, therapy pet teams steer clear of allergen issues by making a concerted effort to not be in classrooms where identified aller gy sufferers are present.

Often for students who are dealing with a tough day, having the opportunity to feel the unconditional love animals provide is extra soothing. For many students who don’t have pets at home, having a therapy dog in the classroom may be their only chance to have these types of stress-reducing interactions.

Best of all, many therapy dogs are trained and partnered with staff, thus allowing them much more time at school. One thing is for sure, the dogs are extremely popular and go home exhausted from all of the attention.

Thanks to all of our pet therapy teams for expending their own resources and time to make each day a bit better for students who benefit from them.

Humann Elementary focuses on creating connections through restorative circles

Fourth-grade teacher Emily Pickerel has been one of the pioneers of circles at Humann. She took a restorative practices class in 2020 and began using the activity during the year of remote learning.

Pickerel teaches students about being safe, respectful and responsible during her circles - lessons that are not new to LPS students. During circles, she reinforces lessons in topics such as kindness, forgiveness, gratitude, inclusivity and being a good role model. These have been beneficial for everyone.

“The circles have helped build a classroom community among my scholars,” Pickerel said. “It helps them feel like they have a voice in our classroom. They have been successful in building relationships and making connections.

“A big takeaway from implementing circles is a decrease in problem behavior. The year I started using circles, I noticed a decrease in my office

second nature.”

Fifth-grade teacher Laura Heller has also seen positive outcomes with her older students.

“Restorative circles have been such a calming aspect of our week,” Heller said. “Even on week three, students know what to expect when we come to circle, and I can sense a feeling of calm in the room. There are students who are more hesitant to share ideas in other subject areas, but when we get in a circle, they are much more comfortable.

“Circles have helped them build connections and confidence in our classroom. It has also enhanced the community sense. Our classroom is everyone’s as opposed to just mine.”

Mattie Trejo-Amen introduced restorative circles in several classrooms in the spring semester of the 2022-23 year as part of her counseling work. The pilot program was an immediate success, and she made plans to expand the concept. Humann

ask friends to play, how to ask permission for something and how to give and accept compliments. This can go a long way in preventing disagreements. When situations arise, students are able to refer back to what they talked about in their circles.

Andersen said restorative circles at Humann will lead to many moments of well-being throughout the year.

“This has been so great for the kids to get to know each other’s names and make connections to things they have in common with their fellow scholars, especially since a majority of the kindergarteners are new to Humann and don’t know each other already,” Andersen said. “I always give my kiddos an opportunity to pass when the ‘talking piece’ comes to them, but I don’t see that often. They love to share and make connections with each other!”
