There’s No Such Thing As Being An “Expert Parent” But Community Action Head Start Can Help You Get Pretty Close!

By Community Action Head Start

f you’re a parent of a baby, toddler, or are expecting, you may be feeling a bit…overwhelmed. And rightfully so—there is so much you need to know! From feeding to sleeping and establishing routines, everything you do (or don’t do) impacts your child’s development. After all, your child’s brain is developing at a rate faster than it will for the rest of his or her life. It seems like every day you’re witnessing your child doing or saying something new, from sitting up to saying those beautiful words, “mom” or “dad” for the first time. You can read parenting guidebooks and ask questions on Google for the rest of your life and still not have all of the answers. And that’s okay. The truth is, it’s probably impossible to know everything there is to know about parenting. It is, after all, the most important job you will ever have. But Community Action’s Early Head Start Home-based program can

help you make sure you’re on the right track; Head Start will support you in becoming your child’s first— and most important—teacher. Early Head Start Home-based, a program option that is part of Community Action Head Start, serves children ages birth to three

years, expectant women, and their families. The program is unique in that learning takes place in the comfort of your own home. Instead of dropping your child off at an early care center, the program’s Family Educators visit you and your child for an hour and a half each week. The support you receive from Family Educators is tailored to your family’s needs. While lessons always focus on core areas of your child’s development (cognitive, language, physical, and social-emotional), Family Educators also support in addressing specific questions or concerns you may have about your child’s development—after all, no two children are exactly the same! Family Educators additionally provide empowering support to you in achieving your personal goals, whether they’re related to continuing your education, getting a better job, or something else. And

if living a healthier lifestyle is on your New Year’s agenda, you might be interested in the added program offering of working with your very own Nutrition and Wellness Coach. In addition to weekly home visits, there are great opportunities throughout the year to socialize with other children and families in the program. Twice monthly, the program hosts fun and educational socialization events. Each event has a different theme and planned activity. In the spring, for example, you might be invited to a gardening-themed event where you and your child can start seeds for your home gardens and help the program plant their raised beds. And then, during harvest time, another event might focus on using the produce you planted to create a delicious new recipe. Participation in Community Action’s Early Head Start Homebased program is completely free! The program targets families with income at or below 100% of the federal poverty guidelines (currently $25,100 per year for a family of four). Additionally, families without a permanent home or who receive ADC/TANF or SSI are automatically eligible. If you’re interested and think you may be eligible, call (402) 875-9328 to set up an appointment to apply. Parenting is simultaneously the most rewarding and challenging journey you will ever experience. We’d be honored to be a part of it!
