Board of Directors’ Report

Serving on the Board is an incredibly rewarding experience. It can also be frustrating and, at times, unpleasant. When you are voted onto the Board, you become the voice of the owners – all 11,000 plus of them! The good is striving to maintain this wonderful community to be the place we bought into while still addressing current trends to keep our community fresh. The unpleasant can be human nature, which causes some owners to believe they speak for “all” owners and feel unheard if the Board decides something different than what they propose. While the overwhelming majority of owners are respectful and understanding, sometimes unpleasantness rears its head. Being respectful should be a two-way street.

A quote I live by is, “An argument is about who is right. A discussion is about what is right”. Discussions can be invaluable in figuring out the future of our community. Let’s do that more, with the understanding that we all have our opinions and things may not go how you believe they should, and that’s okay. Next time, it may go the way you are proposing. Listening to the “why” decisions are made can allow insight that may not have been thought of before. A significant part of the Board’s decisions can hinge on Association counsels’ recommendations. Although some owners may have their own interpretations of laws and/or civil codes, the expectation should be that your Board is relying on the experts of the Association counsel. Let’s all keep driving on that two-way street called respect.

A Note from the Executive Director

The Community feedback phase of the Strategic Plan has wrapped up. The feedback collected covered leadership, flash surveys, interviews, focus groups, questionnaires, and general comments. The community wants the Association to:

Maintain What We Have – Residents want landscaping, open space, amenities, and lifestyle to maintain the level of quality we have enjoyed since Lincoln Hills opened its doors 25 years ago.

Remain Affordable, Safe, Secure, and Accessible – Stay affordable and continue providing a safe, secure, vibrant lifestyle experience.

Stay Current – Residents want to keep up with the times through smart investments in enhanced amenities and lifestyle offerings while maintaining what we have and staying affordable.

Residents also expressed the need for governance and operations to be more disciplined, policy-driven, process-oriented, productive, and cost-effective, as well as increased and improved two-way communication. They want to address

aging infrastructure and our dated appearance while considering changing demographics, anticipated local growth, and greater engagement in the broader Lincoln.

The Board has been very engaged and supportive of the Strategic Planning efforts and has endorsed the following Association Strategy Statement to help guide the Strategic Plan:

Fix the Base – Ensure a solid operational base of processes and structure that is efficient, robust, and manageable.

Improve the Base – Achieve operational excellence through improved productivity, cost efficiencies, and laser focus on essential projects only while keeping dues under control.

Build on the Base – Create, adopt, and fund a market-driven, community-wide master plan through an understanding of current and future residents’ interests and needs. This is a big job and will take time and a focus on discipline, but the final Strategic Plan will meet the above statements, be woven into everything we do, and be reviewed and updated annually.

Architectural Review Committee Taxes!

As this tax season comes to a close, I am reminded of the famous quote by Benjamin Franklin, “In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”

Let me add to that: if you are making changes to the exterior of your house or yard here in Lincoln Hills, you will certainly need ARC approval. There are a few exceptions to this rule, but for the most part, any changes to the outside of your home or lot will need approval from the ARC. If you are unsure if an exterior change requires ARC approval, please ask. The old adage that it is easier to seek forgiveness than to ask permission does not apply here. Residents have had to remove landscape projects and repaint homes that were not approved and did not meet the Design Guidelines.

We are here to help you navigate the Design Guidelines and the Application Process. The Community Standards Department and ARC are available to answer your questions. The ARC now has an information table at their twice-monthly meetings. ARC members are available to answer questions, help with the CC&Rs and Design Guidelines, and help fill out applications. The ARC is also available to come to your home to discuss your projects and help you with the application process.

In the words of Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., “Taxes are what we pay for a civilized society.” I like to think that the ARC and Community Standards are what keep Lincoln Hills civilized and make it a great place to live.

Properties Committee Members

Michael Mazikowski, Chair

It has been four months since taking the reins as Chair of the Properties Committee. Since then, we have added two new members to the Committee, Kathie Sinor and Jerry Tausend. Kathie is a retired high school teacher, swim coach, and self-described gym rat. Kathie’s familiarity with swimming pools and the copious exercise equipment at the Orchard Creek and Kilaga Springs fitness centers will be invaluable as we conduct our inspections.

Jerry was a commercial electrician, insurance adjuster, and commercial farm co-owner. Jerry’s knowledge of horticultural applications and his fondness for the outdoors will be an added asset as we conduct our inspections of the trails, bridges, and community parks.

In future Compass articles, I intend to highlight each of our committee member’s expertise and contributions that they bring to our community.

I am very fortunate to have such a great group

of volunteers on the Committee who are eager and willing to lend their time and subject matter expertise in helping maintain and enhance our real property assets and grounds while striving to keep Lincoln Hills as one of the most beautiful and scenic adult active communities in Northern California.

Coupled with our monthly property inspections, we currently have several exciting projects in the early planning stages, such as the interior renovation of the Orchard Creek Ballroom, the addition of an audio-visual room, and the potential construction of the maintenance storage facility at Orchard Creek.

For more information on what’s going on in the Properties Committee, please join us for our monthly meeting at P-Hall (KS) at 9:00 AM on the first Thursday of each month or watch on Zoom or the video presentation when it becomes available on the Resident Website.

Clubs and Community Organizations Committee Creativity

I got a message the other day from a friend. She created something for the first time and was surprised by how well it turned out because, in her words, “I am the least creative person on the planet.” I often say that I do not have a creative bone in my body. I have little understanding of how to paint or how to make something out of clay. I find myself holding back. Still, life should be a learning process in which you continue to grow and develop.

What better place to do that than here in Lincoln Hills? We have more than 70 clubs with creativity taking many different avenues. Maybe you can find your creative side by joining one of the clubs that will awaken your hidden, inspired talents. There are lots of clubs to try. Ceramics, Creative Glass,

Needle Arts, Painting, Paper Arts, Photography, and Woodcarvers come to mind and are all excellent places to start. Some have instructors and give classes. Current members are always willing to help newcomers. Try attending a book club session, and maybe that short story that’s in your subconscious will find its way out. Simply writing about your life and family growing up will leave a legacy for grandchildren to read. Maybe you’ll finally find that creative bone. In the process, you’ll find yourself growing in new directions. It doesn’t matter if it is something worthy of hanging on a wall, putting on a bookshelf, or placing on the mantle of a fireplace. The key is to stretch yourself and grow. Even perceived failure can lead to growth. Get creative. Find that bone in your body. Grow in a new direction.

Finance Committee

Continued Strong Performance

February’s financial results continued the positive trend for this year. Net revenue for the month (the bottom line) is $37,000, $75,000 higher than projected when the Budget was approved last September. Gross revenue in February is $49,000 over, and expenses are $26,000 less than projected. The primary contributors to the positive gross revenue are the Lifestyle and WellFit Departments. Expense savings are concentrated in the Administration, Food and Beverage, and Facilities and Landscaping Departments.

The good results in February bring the net revenue for the year to $85,000, $115,000 better than projected. Gross revenue is $107,000 over projection, and expenses are $8,000 less than anticipated in the Budget.

As pointed out last month, savings over the budgeted amounts for security, storage space rental, insurance, and credit card processing fees are reducing expenses this year. The first three items only affect Administration Department expenses; the credit card fee savings impact all departments with revenue. Through the first two months, these four items saved almost $46,000 from the budgeted amounts and will continue to have a positive effect throughout the year. The delay in the approval of

PG&E’s rate increases also contributes to the good results in the first two months, and the increases allowed PG&E are less than projected in the Budget, which will be a positive factor for the balance of this year.

Personnel costs in the first two months are $41,000 over Budget. However, a significant portion of that overage results from payments to the instructors for the increased attendance (revenue) of Lifestyle and WellFit classes.

At this point in the year, the Budget projected that $1,861,000 of funds would be needed to supplement the revenue generated by the Operations area to cover its expenses. As noted above, net revenue at the end of February is $115,000 better than Budget, reducing the needed funds to $1,746,000. The chart below illustrates how much each of the Departments required to fund their activities through the end of February.

More detailed financial information as well as summaries of any proposed projects, are available as part of the Agenda each month in the eNews announcement of the Finance Committee meeting. After Board review, the financial statements are also posted on the Resident Website Library. Any questions on Association finances may be sent to Finance.Committee@sclhca.com.

Lifestyle News and Happenings

When Creativity Happens, Growth Comes

Lifestyle programs and activities are growing in variety, scope, and participation. Our Lifestyle Department is adding four new instructors in May, they may be familiar faces to many, as they are Lincoln Hills residents! Karen Pinomaki is teaching Theatre Arts For The Young At Heart. Karen has a long and impressive career in theater and acting, and we are elated that she reached out to us. Like dance, acting is another art medium that is wonderful for socialization and cognitive health. Carolyn Vickers is bringing her passion for Calligraphy with a Beginning Brush Pen class. If you like an art form that is precise and almost meditative, then this is for you. We are incredibly happy to have a new watercolor instructor and welcome Lisa Caliouette to the team. She will be teaching Wonders of Watercolor - A Beginners

Guide to Watercolor. Everyone will be thrilled that we have Sip N Paint returning monthly beginning in May. Darlene Crites will be teaching the Friday night classes wine and cheese included.

Our Trips Coordinator, Scott Cason, took a group of Lincoln Hills residents on a cruise to Mexico in February, which was a first. It sold out quickly and had a long waiting list, so it was clear it was a great new excursion.

In Entertainment, Dance Nights and Dance Concerts are growing to be exceedingly popular, so participation and energy keep growing. Dance concerts are set up in a lounge style, like dance nights, but are “next level” as local live bands play the dance music. We will continue them, and of course, there will be more dancing at our 2024 Summer Amphitheater Concert Series. We have a fantastic line-up, as you see below.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Many of our residents are gardeners, and many share their bountiful harvests. Sharing expands beyond gardens, however, to also sharing time with others. Even though we may consider ourselves retired, we find ourselves involved in many activities and actively volunteering. Neighborhood Watch volunteers share safety and security information throughout the community to help keep us safe. We honor our volunteers annually, where Directors serve special desserts with savory treats and award those who have volunteered for five, ten, 15, and

20 years. Visit sclhwatch.org to view this special list. This year’s volunteer appreciation, held on March 2, was a great success. Over 100 attended to share this special time with fellow volunteers. Sharing with others is how we stay connected. We may be retired, but we never tire of giving and sharing our garden harvest or our precious time with others. How does your (giving) garden grow? Consider volunteering at sclhwatch.org “Want To Volunteer.”

Save the date: May 10, 1:00 to 3:00 PM, Fine Arts Room (OC)

for the Neighborhood Watch general meeting. Directors and Village Coordinators attend as voting members. However, all volunteers and residents are encouraged to attend. Updates regarding events, general activities, pet alerts, security alerts, and new volunteers will be presented. Mark your calendar and join us. Stay connected and informed. A community is only as strong as its informed residents. Please email RSVP to executiveassistant@sclhwatch.org. Visit sclhwatch.org for more information.

Use Technology for the Growth of It

Spring. Gardens. New growth. Let’s apply the idea of new growth to our own health. One cannot help but notice the explosion of new technology for monitoring and improving our health and treating various health problems.

Now is the time for each of us to grow our knowledge about the technology available to help ourselves. In the academic world, it is “publish or perish.” In the world of

health, it is becoming “grasp and embrace technology to self-monitor your health or your health may go away”. Those of us who are technologically challenged and have a phobia about using technology need to learn and grow such skills for the sake of our own wellbeing.

A poignant article in Popular Mechanics , from September to October. 2022, encapsulates the importance of using available technology to prevent death and prolong life. The author grieves that his 46-year-old brother’s life could have been saved if he had been wearing a smartwatch which would have detected and provided early warning of the dangerous heart arrhythmia that took his life. Here, the widowed neighbor who fell in her backyard, was unable to get up and was found dead there

three days later, could have called for help had she been wearing the Medical Alert gadget left lying on her counter. The panicked family of a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease can locate where that wandering person is if they are wearing one of the many smart GPS wearable medical devices on the market.

This article addresses only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to technology for self-monitoring health, but the list includes:

• Fitness trackers.

• Blood pressure monitors.

• Smartwatches for monitoring pulse, blood pressure, and heart rhythms.

• Smart scales tell your body fat percentage, muscle mass, and BMI in addition to your overall weight.

• Pulse oximeters to measure the oxygen in your blood.

• Blood sugar monitoring devices are essential for diabetics.

• Devices to monitor and aid sleep.

Technology is useless unless one learns how to use it. Many people with iPhones and other Apple devices may benefit from joining the Lincoln Hills Apple Users Group to take advantage of their support opportunities and presentations. www.lhaug.org. Search out learning opportunities offered by other resources. Perhaps look for a grandchild who can show you how!

Garden Tour Blooms and Grows in Our Own Backyard

Growing up, backyards bloomed with childhood creativity. The swing set blasted off to Mars. The picnic table hosted royal tea parties. The sandbox was a construction site. Even the sheets drying on the clothesline became the curtains of a theater stage. But eventually, adult responsibilities took precedence, and the space behind the house devolved into little more than a place we mowed once a week. Then retirement hit and we

again found the time to sow our rear world creativity. From planting vibrant serenity gardens to building waterfalls, koi ponds, and even miniature railroads, awakened imaginations blossomed into yards so elaborate and whimsical it would be a crime to keep them hidden behind a fence. Realizing this, each spring, the Lincoln Hills Garden Group opens the gates to “present the opportunity for residents to see the extraordinary yards of Lincoln Hills.”

The Garden Tour is the club’s “gift to the community.” The brainchild of club member Fran White, the self-guided tour has been showcasing backyard masterpieces for over 15 years.

Tour Committee Chair Robin Juhasz explains, “When you have a garden, you want to share it.” A

20-year resident, Robin did not join the group right away. She was still working when she moved here and “didn’t have time to play until 2013.” Now, she is firmly rooted in the 250-member club.

The tour itself requires a major undertaking. The seed is planted a year in advance as Garden Group members cultivate residents willing to feature their homes. A team of club members meets monthly to plan the event. The team visits each candidate— selecting eight or nine yards “for their beauty, uniqueness, and adaptability to the environment in Lincoln Hills.” They look for a variety of both view and interior lots. “We like to show neighbors what is possible with their own yards,” Robin adds.

It takes a big commitment from homeowners to get prepared— weeding, cleaning, pruning, and coordinating with their gardeners. Club volunteers will help those participants who need assistance, though most of these residents keep their yards in meticulous condition year-round.

On April 18, club docents will sell tour packets in the OC parking lot and will be at each participating home to field questions from budding gardeners. Thanks to the Garden Group, when it comes to reaping ideas for flowery landscapes, there is no need to look any further than our own backyard.

A Growing, Creative Art Form Mixes It Up!

Which creative art form “mixes it up” as it grows in popularity? Just ask Mixed Media Club members who have been piecing together all sorts of materials, literally anything they have, to create their own “mixed” masterpieces.

Dictionaries define mixed media as “art that combines various materials and techniques to create a singular work” or “artwork in which more than one medium

or material has been employed.” Think of a mixed media work as a painting that comes to life with a heightened visual, as well as tactile, experience. In addition to a canvas, surfaces could be wood, cardstock, or other types of paper. The design becomes a feast for the eyes by incorporating shapes, texture, and color.

The Lincoln Hills’ Mixed Media Club, established about a decade ago, is currently led by Chris Fetter, who’s taken the helm for her third term as president. During the club’s monthly meetings, members work artistically on projects introduced by Chris, using everyday materials like paint, paper, and glue, string, fabric, book pages, newspaper, photographs, vintage objects, found objects, and natural materials like grasses and leaves.

Chris gathers projects from

local classes, videos, and social media. She finds that ideas are plentiful. “That’s how you know it’s popular,” she says.

“We think of our work as play on canvas or wood,” Chris says. “The themes are not limited to flowers and such but also can be abstracts. Vibrant colors are used to evoke emotions.”

Prevalent in mixed media is Chris’ favorite – the collage or assemblage of various materials. In addition, many mixed media devotees use a journal to collect their artwork.

Having previously been involved in paper crafting and now having added mixed media art to her mix, Chris has realized along the way that using artistic self-expression and creativity yields a relaxing pastime that she enjoys and promotes to others.

If you’re wondering how the mixed media art form originated, research shows that Spanish painter Pablo Picasso, around 1912, created collages exhibiting that art essentially can be made of anything or any combination of things.

“In mixed media, you can’t make a mistake,” Chris discusses the freedom the art allows. ”All the rules go out the window. “

Make no mistake about it. This art has not gone out the window! Now considered mainstream, the creative art of mixed media is growing in the Lincoln Hills Mixed Media Club.

Ben Bainbridge

Ben was born and raised in Noranda, a small mining town in Northern Quebec, Canada. He attended College Militaire Royal and The Royal Military College of Canada. Upon graduation, he joined the Canadian Air Force, where he flew the CF-100. Not wanting to give up flying, Ben joined United Airlines in 1966 and flew for them until 2001, retiring off the 747. He loved golfing, billiards, skiing, and being in the outdoors. Ben is greatly missed by many friends and family, but especially by his wife Debby, two daughters, and his grandson Killian.

Virgil Berry

Born in Texas, Virgil grew up in the Sacramento area. He attended American River College while being a member of the National Guard. After marrying Pam, they lived in Vacaville, where he worked at Mare Island Shipyard. Virgil was a good friend who enjoyed socializing with friends and spending time with his family. He was passionate about Corvettes, starting with his first in 1959 and his newest in 2023. He and Pam enjoyed traveling in their RV and later going on tours and cruises. He belonged to the Sports Car Club, Gardening, and Table Tennis groups. His kindness and smile will be missed.

Dennis William Fischer

Growing up on a farm in North Dakota in a family of thirteen children, Dennis embarked on a journey of faith as a Salvatorian novitiate and seminarian. However, he ended up joining the Air Force. He held many jobs and retired in 2006 after 23 years in the IT Department at U.C. Davis, a job he took until a better one came along, but ended up loving it. The biggest leap of faith, though, was when he married Kay since they were each single parents of three boys. His love of family and sense of humor will be missed, especially by Kay and their six sons and eight grandchildren.

James (Jim) Phillips

Born in Wyoming, Jim attended Catholic schools until eighth grade, and then his family moved to Los Angeles. In 1952, Jim was drafted into the Army and served in Korea. He was awarded multiple medals. He met and married Alice during this time. They moved to Campbell, where Jim worked for Lockheed Martin. Moving again, he purchased a hardware store in Garden Valley and ended his career at the Post Office. Jim was active in the St. Joseph Church in Lincoln, working with St Vincent de Paul and other church ministries. Jim is greatly missed by his wife of 68 years, their six children, fifteen grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Howell (Hal) Smith

Hal grew up in Charlotte, Tennessee. He attended radio broadcasting school before embarking on a lifelong career in radio. Working at some of the most significant stations in the country, Hal started as an on-air personality before moving up to station management. A person of faith, Hal was active at the United Methodist Church of Lincoln and an avid member of the golfing “Renegades” until his passing. Married for 62 years, Hal was preceded in death by his adored wife, Sue, and leaves behind three children, three grandchildren, and one great-grandson. He was a kind, gentle man who always had a handshake, a story, and a smile for everyone.

We welcomed new member Phil, N6MWC. Phil comes to us from Fremont and looks forward to reacquainting himself with amateur radio after a long hiatus. Our Club conducts a weekly radio network at 7:00 PM every Monday on the W6LHR Repeater at 147.030 MHz, 167.9 PL. Ballroom Dance

Our Club is providing instruction for the West Coast swing during April. Also, on Saturday, April 13, we held our Spring Pot Luck. The potluck had a Hawaiian theme. Photos are posted on our website. Kimerer LaMothe, Ph.D presented the following benefits of dance in a

Psychology Today article. When we dance, we practice paying attention to patterns of movement, those of other people as well as our own. Eventually we get better at recognizing certain patterns and combinations. In watching and recreating movement patterns, we develop an enhanced sensory awareness. As our physical capacity grows, so does the range of patterns we are able to share and express, and so does our enjoyment of dance.

Big History

Join us for a captivating journey through the ages! On April 15, we explore The Wilderness as conceived by ancient city dwellers. Wilderness encapsulated a complex interplay of fear, reverence, and fascination with the unknown realms beyond the confines of urban life, shaping

cultural perceptions and narratives for generations to come. Then, on April 22, we uncover The Rise and Fall of Ancient Cities, dissecting the factors contributing to their prosperity or demise. Our semester concludes with three insightful Book Reviews related to Cities on April 29, followed by a riveting discussion on May 6 about Ancient Beijing, an unparalleled metropolis boasting imperial grandeur and rich history. Join us every Monday at 10:00 AM via Zoom.

Photography

Aviation photography was the topic for March. ‘Moose’ Peterson introduced us to the basics of photographing static aircraft, ground-to-air, and finally, the art of photographing air-to-air missions. We’re looking forward to upcoming airshows! Truman Holtzclaw will do a presentation on shadows in photography for April. Truman always packs the room with his outstanding deliveries. A group of us joined together to participate in an online course on smartphone photography. We paired the videos with in-person meetings to discuss what we learned and share results. Pairing perfectly with the course,

Les Thomas conducted a SIG on Smartphone flower photography. Les gave us fabulous tips on how to photograph flowers using unusual angles, diffused light, water droplets, and many other creative tips.

The next Players event is our June show, “Old Hams,” a charming comedy directed by Jane Patton. It’s the perfect play for Lincoln Hills. The characters in the cast are all Senior Hollywood actors and filmmakers spending their retirement in an old Victorian manor in Burbank, enjoying each other’s company, when their relatively untroubled lives are faced with an impending calamity: An unscrupulous lawyer’s sinister plot to sell their comfy, even if rickety, old house to make room for—of all things—a shopping mall! This must be stopped! How will these “old hams” tap into their creative acting skills to thwart a scheme that could leave them homeless? The four shows play

Sports Cars

The sun’s out, the rains have stopped, the hills are green, and the trees are in bloom. Cars are out of their garages, and convertible tops are down. On March 15, we had our first social event of 2024 at Rubino’s. Thirty-five members enjoyed food and the opportunity to get out as a group. March 22

was the Inaugural Ride for 2024 through Capay Valley with lunch at the Road Trip Bar & Grill. Many rides and social events are in the planning stages. On a sad note, we lost one of our most active members, Virgil Berry. Virgil will be remembered for his smile, wit, and his knowledge of Corvettes, and his annual Sausage Run to Lockeford. “Wishing you open roads with no speed limits.”

Tap Company

The curtain has now closed on our spring production, “Everybody Dance Now!,” leaving behind pleasant memories. We thank all who joined us in experiencing the magic of dance. From the dancers whose feet tapped out melodies to the singers who filled the air with harmonies, from the director’s vision to the producers’ support and the choreographers’ creativity, every contributor played an invaluable role. Let’s not forget the unsung heroes - the technical crew - who ensured seamless

performances night after night. It was truly a team effort. In recognition of their dedication, the Tap Company hosted a cast party with a buffet and live music - a delightful conclusion to all the hard work put in to making the show a success.

In this brief 45-minute talk, Ann Burns Johnson will walk us through some of the most commonly depicted sights in the Golden State and how various artists have portrayed the same place. We will look at some less frequented locales or, at least, sights from a different perspective. Definitely a fun trip.
