“To whom does design address itself: to the greatest number, to the specialist of an enlightened matter, to a privileged social class? Design addresses itself to the need. - Charles Eames

Always trying to observe my surroundings, bringing as much of the exterior beauty to the indoors. Historic architectural sites amaze me, well-designed interiors bewilder my senses, and touristic sites transport me to another time. Placelessness in our modern society is easily cured through a well thought out design bringing the interior together. Everyone should feel at comfort in a space they visit, stay or work in.

DESIGN CONCEPTS - Studied

WELLNESS & SPA

INDRA spa; the senses in the Indonesian language. This name was particularly chosen for this spa because Bali therapy is known for balance for the senses. This couple treatment room aims to create an indoor journey through Bali with the use of all the person’s senses going through the 5 therapy stages in this space.

Furniture Plan

Group work scope: Concept and design layout, 3Dmax modeling, 3D physical model

The cabana is set to represent the Bali outdoors as well as a sculptural piece within the spa. This creates a focal point in the center where the main massage takes place after the 4 therapy sessions.

The 4 corners represent dierent stages that lead to the massage: - Changing and oil preparation - Daily stretching - Hammock relaxation - Couple’s mental therapy (meditation)

The materials within the room consist of greenery, stone, natural wood, and water. Water within the room helps with the stretching, as the couple walk around the center cabana, which is part of a traditional Bali muscle therapy.

This room is meant to enclose the beautiful outdoors for the privacy of the people.

WELLNESS & SPA

CULTURA Home spa - GROHE COMPETITION; sustainably designed to represent the middle east with a modern twist. This spa was a summer semester competition with GROHE with the topic of a modern middle east inspired spa using the Grandera bathroom collection for a luxury home. The sketch below was inspired by Burj Al-Arab using calligraphy of the word “relaxation” in arabic to define the spaces and layout.

Group work scope: Concept and design layout, advertisement, competition presentation, assisting with the sketchup 3D model

CUBIC TOWER

IS DESIGNED AS A BOUTIUQE HOTEL WITH A ROOM ON EACH FLOOR AND PRIVATE ACCESS TO THE ELEVATOR. THERE ARE 16 ROOMS IN TOTAL LOCATED IN THE OUTSKIRTS OF SWITHZERLAD. THE HOTEL IS DESIGNED TO REPRESENT THE DIFFERENT ROTATIONS OF THE RUBIK’S CUBE. THE CONCEPT IS THE BREAKDOWN OF THE CUBE, ALL OVERLAPPING AT DIFFERENT ANGLES. THE CORE WITH THE LOBBY, ELEVATORS AND THE STAIRCASE IS IN THE CENTER, SURROUNDED BY THE GLASS BOX ROOM. THE THEME OF THE SPACE COMBINES THE BRIGHT COLORS OF THE CUBE.

MODERN DESIGNS REQUIRE A SUSTAINABLE ASPECT TO SPACE PLANNING. BAMBOO FLOORING AND METALLIC SHEET TEXTURES WERE USED TO MAKEUP MOST OF THE SPACE. ALL THE FABRICS ARE ‘ALL GREEN’ FABRICS THAT HAVE BEEN RECYCLED FROM OLD FABRICS AND MATERIALS.

PLANTS AS WELL AS GLAZED GLASS FOR THE EXTERIOR OF THE ROOMS ARE USED TO COOL DOWN THE ROOM, WITHOUT TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE AIR CONDITIONING. SOLAR PANELS ARE THE MAIN SOURCE OF ELECTRICITY AND HEATING THROUGHOUT THE HOTEL. THE ENERGY GAINED IN THE MORNING WITH ALL THE SUNLIGHT IS USED AT NIGHT FOR THE FEW LIGHTS WITHIN THE ROOM. AS FOR THE MORNING, THE FOUR GLASS WALLS LIGHT UP THE ROOM NATURALLY. ALSO, THE GREY WATER IS USED TO FLUSH THE TOILETS AND SOME OF IT IS TAKEN INTO FILTERS TO BECOME CLEAN ENOUGH TO IRRIGATE THE GREENERY WITHIN THE HOTEL. IN GENERAL THE ELECTRICITY IS BEING CONSERVED AND WHEN USED, IT IS USED BY OUR NATURAL RESOURCE, THE SUN. AS FOR THE WATER CONSERVATION, THE WATER IS ALWAYS BEING REUSED TO HELP WITH THE AMOUNT OF DAILY WASTE. THE GLAZING OF THE GLASS KEEPS AWAY AN AMPLE AMOUNT OF HEAT TO COOL DOWN THE SPACE.

S U I T E R E N D E R S

TO HELP WITH THE WATER CONSERVATION CONCEPT, THE FAUCETS CHOSEN ARE WATER EFFICIENT. MANDOLIAN SINGLE HANDED CENTERSET KITCHEN FAUCET FAUCET, WITH CHROME FINISH WAS USED FOR THE SMALL PANTRY AREA. THE FAUCET USES 6.8 L/ MIN OF WATER FLOW, RATHER THAN THE REGULAR 12.6 L/MIN FLOW. IT IS EASY TO USE WITH WET OR SOAPY HANDS, WHICH HELPS IT BEING PLACED WHERE IT IS LOCATED. VERO 2 HANDLE WIDESPREAD LAVATORY FAUCET IS USED FOR THE BATHTUB AND BATHROOM SINKS. THIS IS FAUCETS OF CHROME FINISH AND WITH 5.7 L/MIN OF WATER FLOW INSTEAD OF THE REGULAR FAUCETS.

GAIN THE SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE STEP BY STEP. TO GET A DRINK, THE CUSTOMER WOULD BE REQUIRED TO BUY A CUSTOMIZED THERMAL CUP THAT WOULD THEN GIVE THEM AN EXTRA FREE DRINK FOR THE DAY. THE CONCEPT BEHIND THIS IS TO CREATE A ROUTINE OF GETTING A CUP TO REFILL INSTEAD OF PAPER CUPS. THE TRASH BINS INSIDE REMIND THE CUSTOMER WHAT THEY GAIN FROM RECYLCING PRODUCTS, BY THE QUOTES WRITTEN ON THEM. WE GET TO SAVE THE EAR, KEEP OUR WATER CLEAN AND PURIFY OUR AIR. THE LIGHTING IS QUITE MINIMAL SINCE THE OPERAT OPERATING HOURS ARE WITHIN SUNLIGHT TIMINGS AS WELL. DOUBLE GLAZED GLASS HELP PREVENT THE SPACE FROM HEATING UP QUICKLY, WHICH CONSERVES ENEN ERGY. THE MATERIALS LIKE METAL AND REFLECTED SURFACES ARE USED THROUGHOUT THE SPACE, RERE FLECTING THE LIGHT ENTERING FROM DIFFERENT ANAN GLES, PRODUCING MORE LIGHT. THE 2 FAUCETS USED ARE DELTA SUSTAINABLE FAUCETS FOR LESS WATER CONSUMPTION (6.8 L/MIN RATHER THAN 12.6 L/MIN).

Lighting had a high frequency of positive and negative responses, according to the location of the employee’s at the office. A minority of the employees provided negative feedback regarding the small size of the pantry. The entertainment area is perceived as an advantage at the office.

Office Demographics

Cluttered wires could be considered a design violation.

Based on the analysis, a strong correlation was found between lighting and employee satisfaction. ( p value < .001 ) This finding comes hand in hand with the study done by Cambridge University Press (“Enviromental”1982).

Respondents' Sample Results

• The office space under analysis has a high autonomy regarding lighting and the office design. • Results also showed that employees have less control over the temprature of the office.

The correlation between office layout and teamwork led us to conclude that the open office layout encourages communication between employees thus making teamwork easier, increasing productivity. ( p value < .001) This is proven by article ‘The New Yorker’ (2014).

The statistical analysis showed a strong positive correlation between design and productivity. ( p value < .001) These results are supported by the findings of the article written in ‘Evolutionary Psychology’ (Fitzgerald 2012).

The analysis created a surprisingly strong correlation between personal space and productivity. ( p value < .001 ) This relationship is confirmed in Journal of Facilities Management, written by Bany Haynes in 2008.

Statistics proved that the location of a workspace correlates with the employee’s level of productivity. ( p value < .001 ) The results are supported by an articlein the ‘Journal of Environmental Psychology’ (Jungsoo 2013).

The investigation demonstrated that productivity is affected by noise traveling within the space. ( p value < .001 ) This fact was discussed in ‘Facilities’ in 2008 (“An Evaluation…”).

Overall, the analysis conducted on this marketing compay’s office space resulted with mixed reviews about the design criteria tested at hand. Lighting is the topic that gained a high frequency of responses within the office on both its positive and negative premises. In conlcusion, space planning was found to be the main problem in this space, which resulted in many contradicting responses. Even though its an open office layout, the desk locations and paritions need to be relocated to avoid blocking the light in certain areas of the space, espeically with the windows on most walls. One topic they need to consider is ergonomics, due to the fact that the employees jobs require long hours of computer work. The use of ergonomical chairs would create, since most of the employees seemed uncomfortable and fidgeting in their seats constantly. This addition would increase the comfort resulting in higher productivity and satisfaction. "An Evaluation Of The Impact Of The Office Environment On Productivity." Facilities 26.5/6 (2008): 178-195. UNIVERSAL

HOSPITAL ROOM - IDEC COMPETITION

This hospital room design was part of the IDEC competition to create a modern and comforting hospital suite. A palm tree’s leaf and the date was the main inspiration and concept of this layout. The curved partition resembles the leaf’s curve and circles to resemble the date. Materials such as wood help bring this concept to the space and the color scheme is natural. Instead of traditional curtains around the bed, we created automatic partitions that move from the cupboard doors to surround the bed. The guest bed is a sofa bed built-in to the wall with LED strip lighting when opened and a wood panel when closed and flush with the wall.

MOMA Art Gallery seating; an artistic touch to a regular bench seating, created to represent an art piece of our selection. El Teneen is a graffiti artist from Egypt, who painted several murals around Cairo during the revolution in 2011. Each piece he drew, resemebled the event of the day.

CHECKMATE This artwork depicts the people standing together against all the rulers, with the fallen king.

The seating I designed is based on 3 elements: 1. Levels 2. Various materials 3. Position

Levels and materials categorize the different people in the revolution. Color represents the

the broken red cube is singled out, representing the falled head of state in the artwork.

FURNITURE

METAMORPHASIS The droplet of water was the inspiration to this furniture piece. Its metamorphasis of 7 stages was the key to creating the furniture console.

The console is made out of oak wood to create a strong contrast with the colored mirror pieces. the mirror pieces represent the stages of rain. I combined smoked mirror, blue mirror , original mirror and frosted. Inspired by the rain, the mirror pieces are shaped and scattered randomly representing natural rainfall.

FURNITURE

WAITING AREA SEATING This piece was based on an art history project to create something inspired by an architect and create a modern furniture piece. Renzo Piano’s Bullet tower inspired the design of the twisted center sculpture in stainless steel. The black velvet seating circled around completes the look that Piano usually goes for; elegant and monotone.

SENIOR THESIS

THE SYNCHRONIZER; my creation of the ultimate indoor is outdoor lounge. As being in Dubai makes us want to be

Existing VIP Lounge Interior

outdoors, this space brings nature’s beauty indoors.

This airport lounge is made for the skywards member community, to give those that cannot afford VIP lounges to come together. There are 4 major pods in this space that are targetted towards different purposes however, all purposes have a common factor which is community socializing with no technology. The main aim is to help travelers stop time for a bit and relax through the various physcological and mental strengthening activities.

airport lounge. The organic nature of the layout and shapes are inspired by nature and its beautiful flow.

3D Interior Perspective Layout

Each pod is named based on the services it offers in the

STONEHENGE - its raw wooden interior pod, that provides the feeling that a workshop holds. This pod allows people to create their own designs from everyday materials,

STONEHENGE

which helps bring people away from technology and work with others.

The tea area helps the travelers attain a herbal relaxation journey, which is a reason to why the seating is lower in this portion to ground the person to their surrounding. Sleeping pods are also built-in to the wall for those anxious travelers or transit that need a place to take a nap.

Below the Stonehenge is a memory tree; people can write a memory and pin it on the tree, and a reading lounge for those who like to dream through books.

SKYPORTAL - is a lookout deck, where cushion seating is found to lay on and look up to the artpiece on the ceiling. This ceiling displays outdoor projections as well as starry nights.

The memory tree is right above the reading area with a natural look and feel to it as it grows along the pod’s base. Beneath the skyportal is a general lounge area for people in transit.

The swing beneath the skyportal is encaged within a glass cabin with treens and a lawn, giving off a garden feel. Colors within the space compliment the materials used in their raw and natural feel.

LIGHTSCAPE - is a light and sound show telling family and moral based stories. The seating area beneath it is a combination of family/group and businessmen seating.

Furniture Piece Design The hub is my detailed design product, to allow any traveler to sit with some privacy. Materials such as plank birch wood is used to unify and allow uidity of the general furniture look. Balck ďŹ ber glass table adds a strong contrast to clear the center path. LED lighting was added as an ambience feature emphasizing the shape and material textures. The centeral organic cords allow a part of nature to endulge into this piece’s atmosphere.

THIS SPACE IS AN AIRPORT LOUNGE PROPOSED FOR THOSE OF BLUE SKYWARDS MEMBERS FOR ALL EMIRATES AIRLINES TRAVELLERS. IT IS A NEW AND UPDATED TYPOLOGY OF THE CLASSICAL PERSPECTIVE OF ANY AIRPORT LOUNGE. AS A WAITING SPACE, IS ASSEMBLES THE CONCEPT OF ACTIVITY AND RELAXATION, AS WELL AS EMBRACES NATURE AND THE OUTDOORS, BRINGING IT TO THE INDOOR ENVIRONMENT TO A PROCEDURAL, LONELY, AND STRESSFUL STATION KNOWN AS THE AIRPORT. THE PASSENGER ENTERING THIS SPACE WOULD HAVE THEIR BODY AND MIND SYNCED WITH THEIR SURROUNDINGS, AS IF DISCONNECTED FROM THE HASSLE AND THE STRESS OF THE DAY’S JOURNEY. JBC PRIVATE OFFICE The Client requested a modern office of shades of blue, which is interpreted in the general concept. A night sky was proposed above the open office area, organic flooring of different shades, frosted glass partitions to create the sleek and open space. Minimal but the use of wood provides the contrast and develop a richer ambience. I proposed 3 options combining the requested department layouts all to match this concept and the modern scheme.

OMNIYAT, PRIVATE VIP OFFICE Within a tight space and many departments, the use of customized furniture was the best approach to fit the number of seats required. The corridor access is used for both storage and seating in a wood texture to blend in with the wall pattern. Curved reception desk creates a welcomed opening to the rest of the office space. Each department is located based on its relation to each other and to the appropriate location from the main office entrance.

HVS OFFICE; EMIRATES FINANCIAL TOWERS As a small head office, the layout was crucial to decide on with the manager to fit her needs and minimal budget to create a comfortable space. The main materials used were laminate floor, wallpapers on every wall, and textured paint. To add a little character, edgy

patterns were added to the frosting and wall designs.

The office interior is split into two main areas, one with laminate flooring for the VIP area and one with carpet flooring for the open office.

Adding the touches of red around the office was one simple way to keep the company identity. Also, we added a strip of whiteboard paint to break the repelant strength of the red color, and give the wall more purpose to the staff.

HO U S E

The design of the reception desk has an abstract thought process behind it. The title CURRENCY HOUSE has been used in a fragmented manner on the front side of the desk. Each letter represents a thickness that is manifested in the vertical wooden strips at the front. Although not obvious to all, this has an underlining playful act. The planter behind is carefully positioned to add a natural asthetic as well as provide a camouflaged setting for the built in CCTV.

FLYERS

ID CLUB

LAUNCH !!

ID club was a needed start for our department to give some life and free help and advice to all its students. The president and I (vice-president) created the club logo below with the aim to make it a vibrant start, hence the use of the color lime green.

Wednesday October 15th 2014 6 PM A Building - Rotunda

The grey color was our standard for our event flyers to keep the consistency so epople would be able to spot our ads. We consistantly made it a point to keep all graphics and information minimal to catch the attention needed to our events.

Hope to see you all there ! Arrive with an empty stomach..
