LILLSTREET’S SUMMER CAMPS

offer a wide variety of programs for children and young adults. Each week of camp, students ages 3 ½ through young adult add to the lively Lillstreet community and have the benefit of working and learning among professional artists of all mediums.

WE PRIDE OURSELVES ON OUR CREATIVE INSTRUCTORS

who provide a guided learning experience designed to maximize each child’s personal creativity. Each student is seen as an individual with a unique voice, and every student is taught to create fearlessly and to focus on the process of making art more than on the end result. Most importantly, we foster a relaxed and non-competitive environment in the classroom and everyone has lots and lots of fun!

AGES 3.5-5 CLAY & MULTIMEDIA CAMP For our youngest Lillstreet kids! In response to your requests, we’re now offering multimedia camps for your preschooler. We’ll spend Monday creating in clay and use paint, fiber, and many other materials the rest of the week. A light snack is included. MORNING ONLY WEEKS A,B,E,F,G,H,J,K,L

CLAY & MULTIMEDIA CAMP Explore a variety of materials and ideas in our popular Clay & Multimedia camp. We’ll spend Monday working on a clay project, developing handbuilding skills and seeing our ideas take form. The rest of the week will be spent creating new works of art using a lot of other materials including paint, plaster, fiber and recyclables. The curriculum is different each week and teachers set the projects according to each individual group’s interest. Choose from the full-day or morning only programs. AGES 5-8 COSMIC CONSTRUCTIONS Love space? We’ll use clay and multimedia to create our favorite planets, rockets, and space rovers while learning about galaxies, stars, planets, and moons. We’ll spend Tuesday getting inspiration at the Adler Planetarium. Camp tuition includes field trip tickets and transportation. M, W, TH, F 9AM-1PM

WILD THINGS Send your kids to Wild Things Camp where they will spend their days drawing and creating using clay and other media to make animals and critters of all kinds for a zoo of their own! On Tuesday, we’ll take a trip to the Lincoln Park Zoo.

Learn the exciting skill of wheelthrowing with children your own age. We will throw for 1 1/2 hours every day and do handbuilding projects to finish out the class. You will create little pots with little hands and love them when you take them home.

SUPERHEROES With great artistic talent comes great creation. The world needs new superheroes, and in this class you can learn how to create them. You don’t have a moment to lose as you pick the mask, cape, vehicle, powers and origin of the latest, greatest adventurer of them all: yours. Working with a professional illustrator, you will learn proportion, perspective, and foreshortening so you’ll know how your character looks from the side, back, and even a bird’s eye view. The final 3-panel comic will be reproduced and shared with the class. WEEK I 9am-1pm

EXPLORATIONS IN CLAY & MULTIMEDIA Use a variety of materials to explore individual interests and themes while creating original works of art. We’ll encourage artistic self-direction while exploring individual artistic visions with guidance from the instructor. On Monday, students will work on hand-built clay projects as well as collaborate with the teacher to determine the curriculum for the rest of the week. Students will use a wide variety of materials including paint, plaster, fiber and recyclables and experimentation is encouraged. Kids enrolled in other morning camps at Lillstreet can join the afternoon Explorations camp to create a full day camp. WHEELTHROWING CAMP Learn the exciting skill of wheelthrowing! We’ll learn the basics skills needed to center clay and throw a pot while encouraging the expression of your personal ideas on the wheel. MOVIE MAKING Screenplay writing, costume design, cinematography,


directing, editing, music composition, lighting, and more. Work as a team with your classmates to write and produce a short film. EGYPTIAN CAMP In collaboration with the Oriental Institute Museum, spend a week exploring the arts of ancient Egypt. Create pottery, jewelry, and paintings like those found in the palaces and tombs of the pharaohs! We’ll spend one day in the Oriental Institute Egyptian Gallery (included in the camp tuition) WEEK G 9am-3:30pm $345, Members $340

DRAWING INTO PAINTING Spend the week focusing on the visual arts as we explore drawing, painting, and collage. We will spend the first 2 days learning techniques to draw what we see. The rest of the week we will learn to use and mix color and create both collages and acrylic paintings. 9am-1pm WEEK G, H

and binoculars, then make art with recycled materials inspired by our observations. We’ll spend Tuesday at Northerly Island sketching, exploring, and creating site-specific, found-object creations. 9am-3:30pm WEEKS F,J,K

INSPIRED BY NATURE Did you know that the bones of a pigeon weigh less than its feathers? If you enjoy learning about flora and fauna, this is the camp for you. We’ll spend the week discovering exciting details about the natural world and converting our new knowledge into works of art. We’ll use a variety of media including drawing, painting, sculpture, and photography (to name a few). This camp will include a one day field trip that visits both the Lincoln Park Conservatory and the Lincoln Park Zoo on Tuesday. 9am-3:30pm WEEK C

ECO-ART CAMP Venture outside and explore the natural world! We’ll observe nature with magnifying glasses

AGES 10-14 A WORLD IN A BOX: JOSEPH CORNELL Learn about and take inspiration from Joseph Cornell’s boxes and games made from found objects and collaged images. Cornell’s boxes were narratives of magical worlds, others were games, and others still were simply assemblages of interesting objects, clippings, and art materials. In this camp, we would visit the Art Institute to see and study the art of Joseph Cornell, and then make our own Cornell boxes. The students would design a concept, find and make objects for inside of the box, decorate the outside of the box, and emerge with their own interpretations of Cornell’s fun and interesting style. On Tuesday, we’ll spend the day at the Art Institute looking at the Cornell Boxes. 9am-3:30pm WEEK L $360, Members $355

SEWING 101

GARDEN PLANTERS AND GROWING SCULPTURES We’ll create sculptural planters using hand-building techniques with terracotta clay. Make a sculpture that can grow grass for hair, or a beard of hanging vines! Plant your seeds and the clay sculptures will keep changing once the plants take on a life of their own.

Do you have visions of sewing your own clothes or being a fashionista? Maybe you want to learn how to use a sewing

machine to alter or fix some of your clothes already hanging in your closet? Campers will start from the beginning, mastering the basics of the sewing machine by learning different stitches and seams. You’ll get to design and create your own bag and apron! SCREENPRINTED SCHOOL CLOTHES Make personalized tshirts, bags, or iron-on patches with your very own printed designs! Students will learn about the photo-emulsion process, as well as registration for multi-color prints. One t-shirt is provided for each camper, and there are tote bags and other fabric blanks available for purchase. Parents are encouraged to help students look for tshirts or other fabrics at home. Posters are a staple in anyone‘s living space. Make some of your own, and to share with friends in this hands-on screenprinting on paper summer camp! Everything from image creation to screen prep will be covered as well as good printing techniques. Campers will design and print an eye-catching three-color poster, as well as a project of their choice. Paper and inks provided. PRIMITIVE PAINTERS We will visit the Field Museum to see this exhibit of the cave art of ancient Lascaux to see a reproduction of caves filled with paintings from over 17,000 years ago! We will create our own tools, mix our own paint, and make sculpture and paintings on natural materials while learning about these amazing cave painters. CLAYMATION CAMP (2 WEEKS) Learn how to make an original claymation movie in this genuine multimedia camp. This all-day camp will focus on a number of art disciplines: armature construction, hand building, drawing, scenery construction, storyboard planning, script writing, amongst others. Students will be guided through the process of creating a digital short that will be made into a DVD. This camp is about creating fun and games with metal. Learn how to make kinetic objects, creating toys and other games, such as pinwheels, metals cars and game boards, using basic metal techniques. WAX CARVING & CASTING CAMP This camp will explore the ancient technique of wax carving and lost wax casting, a process that Silver will be available for an additional fee. Students can

FASHION CAMP (2 WEEKS) Looking to define your own style? Can’t find that perfect outfit that sets you apart from all the rest? Well look no further. The first week will be spent designing outfits from clothes you already have at home or from thrift store finds. We will have some fabrics available, but you may want to pick out your favorites from the local fabric stores. The second week will focus on making accessories in metal that can be attached to the garment and/ or worn on the body. We finish out the two weeks with a fashion show!
