HELLO, FRIENDS!

Welcome to Lillstreet Art Center. Artists of all backgrounds, from novice to master, can find a place to learn inside our welcoming community. We began as an alternative arts space in a converted horse barn on Lill Street in 1975 and gradually evolved in to Chicago’s largest art center with 40,000 square feet to explore and create. We encourage you to spend time, interact, and learn more about our 8 departments, 50 plus studios, gallery, and artisan gift shop.

SAM CHUNG SLAB DESIGN: MAKING POURING FORMS Sam will be using paper patterns with slabs to construct hand-built pouring forms. Over the course of two days, he will demonstrate the construction of a teapot, pitcher and ewer using customized paper templates. This process begins with sketching forms and translating these two-dimensional ideas into templates that will then be used to create three-dimensional slab form. Drawing is a key component to the making of forms, so one’s creativity is only limited by the ability to draw. Almost any form can be realized with this process, whether it is a body, lid, spout or handle. Discussion will focus on how ideas for pouring forms can be generated from a variety of sources, including function, ergonomics, history and design. This process incorporates the more intuitive act of drawing with the more mechanical method of building with predetermined parts. Additionally, he will discuss construction strategies that can simplify one’s approach to slab building.

HEATHER MAE ERICKSON PLASTER ON PLASTER: PROTOTYPING & MOLDMAKING SYSTEMS FOR FUNCTION, SCULPTURE & INSTALLATION Heather Mae Erickson will demonstrate various methods of creating prototypes with wood and plaster. Basic to advanced mold making will be demonstrated with an emphasis on creating your own objects from which to create molds. This workshop is half working with plaster to create objects and half engineering molds. Students will learn about systems of creating models/molds and will be shown how to create tools for fabrication. Heather Mae will demonstrate and lecture on a variety of processes with plaster and its many stages of workability. She will share with you her drafting skills and planning out designs with special drawing devices and stencils.
