These classes are designed for those who have never taken an art class or are looking to discover a new medium. With seven departments to choose from, you can learn to throw a pot in Ceramics, 3D print in our Digital Lab or make jewelry in our Metalsmithing studios, just to name a few.

Ceramics

Lillstreet’s long-established clay department offers classes for all skill levels in wheelthrowing, handbuilding and sculpture. Advanced students can fine-tune their work or experiment with soda firing. Take advantage of over 200 glaze combinations, firings and state-of-the-art equipment during our generous open studio hours.

Beginner/ Advanced Beginner Beginning/Advanced Beginning Wheelthrowing 10 Weeks Beginning students will develop fundamental throwing techniques while returning students refine their techniques to create more complex forms. Be inspired by those around you and challenged by your personal goals. Teacher demonstrations are designed for multilevel students. Class fee includes one 25-pound bag of clay.

First-Time Artist First-Time Potter 5 Weeks Dress for mess and spin the wheel to shape clay into the basic forms of mugs and bowls. You will work with various tools and later glaze your pottery. Learn a little handbuilding too, such as pinch pots, bowls and small serving trays. Plan to purchase a clay tool kit at Lillstreet. Class fee includes one 12-pound bag of clay.

First-Time Handbuilding 5 Weeks Learn the timeless handbuilding techniques of attaching pinch pots, coils and slabs to make pottery, art objects or sculptures. Use of tools such as molds, slab roller and extruder will be demonstrated. Plan to purchase a clay tool kit at Lillstreet. Class fee includes one 12-pound bag of clay.

Small Sculptures, Figurines & Dolls 10 Weeks Imagination flows as you create abstract, realistic and anthropomorphic or animal sculptures. You may choose to articulate your figures through the application of kinetic elements to create a doll. All levels welcome.

Sculptural Narratives in Clay 10 Weeks What story do you have to tell? Learn handbuilding techniques to develop your ideas into clay sculpture while maturing your creative thinking process. 10 Weeks Looking for something unique to adorn your kitchen, bathroom or fireplace? Learn to make decorative tiles from a slab of clay. We’ll teach you how to build up and carve into the clay then make a plaster mold from your tile to make multiples. Firing and glazing will be discussed. All levels welcome.

Figurative Sculpture 10 Weeks Explore a step-by-step approach to body proportions, construction problem solving and internal armature, the planes of the figure, human expression and body gesture. Traditional Figure Sculpture 10 Weeks Working weekly from a nude model, you will take a methodical approach to sculpting the figure. You may choose to sculpt a head, torso or full figure. Focus will be given to anatomy, body proportions, poses and gesture. Building techniques and observational skills will be emphasized. Special attention will be given to traditional and nontraditional finishing techniques for sculpture.

Simply Soda: Beginning Soda

Print on Clay 10 Weeks Print repeatable images on leatherhard clay tiles, vessels and sculptural forms. Learn relief, screenprinting and paper lithography techniques that can be applied directly and indirectly to greenware. Transfer images, textures and patterns to your clay pieces using slips, stains and special inks. Most techniques can be adapted for earthenware. Prerequisite: One year of ceramics classes or instructor approval.

Advanced Handbuilding

Experience flashes of color, textured surfaces and the excitement of unpredictable results utilizing the distinct atmospheric qualities of the soda kiln. Weekly wheelthrowing or handbuilding demonstrations will encourage more complex forms. Using slips and glazes, the soda-firing process becomes accessible and understandable. You will participate in all stages of the process including required kiln loading and unloading outside of class time.

Increase your clay skills while building functional and sculptural objects. Weekly demonstrations will teach more complex techniques to manipulate clay and allow further development of your handbuilt work.

Prerequisite: One year of experience working with clay or instructor approval.

Demonstrations of more complex forms will encourage you to expand your repertoire of pots and build confidence. Throw taller, bigger pieces with nuance. Try new and advanced glazing techniques to create pots of your own design and aesthetic.

This class is designed primarily for students who want to develop specific ideas, refine techniques and pursue independent projects.

Form can anchor, uplift and elicit an emotional response from the viewer. By looking at your thrown forms critically and with attention to detail, you can create subtle and overt changes to the aesthetic. Expect to be pushed out of your comfort zone.

Learn the techniques necessary to accurately render botanical subjects using graphite and watercolor. You will keep a sketchbook to record details and test techniques, then apply those skills to more considered and developed pieces. Some class periods will be spent at local conservatories practicing out artistry in the field.

Cabinets of Curiosities are small collections of extraordinary objects and oddities of the natural world. This drawing class will improve your proportion and rendering skills while focusing on unusual subject matters including bones, insects, flora and fauna, taxidermy and other natural specimens.

Learn to create your own comic books beginning with a simple strip and ending with a full-fledged short story. Inspiration can come from real life experiences, dreams or story ideas you’ve always wanted to create. Students of all levels with an interest in sequential art are welcome. Bring
 a sketchbook (8x10 or larger), pencil and eraser to the first class.

Delve deeper into rendering the human anatomy. Each week the class will begin with drawing from a live model, focusing on a different part of the body. This class is designed for the illustrator or cartoonist interested in building skills and learning how to simplify the human form. Focusing on a new still life each session, emphasis will be on composition, color and the importance of equal attention to background and foreground. Within the group setting, there will be a focus on the level and interest of each individual. Through group discussion and evaluation, we will build common vocabulary and explore a variety of styles and methods.

Each week you will learn to draw from many different historical periods in art history. Areas of study may include the Old Masters, Greek and Roman sculpture, the modernists and the museum’s most contemporary works. Learn about composition, pictorial organization, and subject matter alongside discussions on the lives, methods, strategies and historical impact of the various artists. Experiment with form construction, mixing pigment using eye shadow, spices, pastels and simulating enameling with pre-colored resins. Do you have stones, found objects or something that you’ve always wanted to set? Bring those items to class and incorporate them into a piece of jewelry. We’ll investigate multiple setting techniques to get them to stay in place. Demonstrations will include tab setting, prong setting, flush setting and others.

Be more proficient at stone setting and soldering by focusing on bezel setting. Learn to create bezels more quickly, with ease and improve skills learned in beginning metals. Multilevel Working With Wax And Casting 10 Weeks Explore the three-dimensional possibilities of hard waxes for carving and soft waxes for modeling. Visiting Artist Workshops Mokume-gane: Wood Grain Pattern in Metal 3 Day Copper and sterling are fusion bonded through compression and high heat to form a solid billet with alternating layers of metal. Billet is fired in a refractory brick mini-furnace with a torch. After forging to a predetermined thickness, the billet can be made into twisted ring stock or patterned sheet metal. Raw material is made in conjunction with a jewelry project; a seamless washer formed ring or forged band ring, both lined with sterling.

The Textile Department welcomes students of all levels whether you sew, print, dye or collect fabric. Our student population is diverse—from professional artists who sell at artisan fairs, online shops and consignment, to those who enjoy working with their hands and want to explore something new. Our instructors will guide you as you turn your project ideas into one-of-a-kind completed works of functional, decorative or fine art.

First-Time Screen Printing on Fabric 5 Weeks Whether you are interested in onesies, yardage or band T-shirts, this class shows how easy it can be to put designs onto fabric. Our studio is equipped with a UV exposure unit, aluminum screens and large print tables. Projects can include tote bags, gifts or fabric for sewing and quilting. Office & Gallery Fall Hours:

Artist Membership: $40/year • Discounts on classes and workshops • VIP membership card • Discounts at participating art supply stores and other community services • 10% off of gallery purchases

Household Membership: $75/year (for 2 people)

Monday-Thursday: 10am-7:30pm Friday: 10am-6pm Saturday: 10am-6pm Sunday: 10am-5pm Register Early! Classes Fill Quickly. We strongly encourage you to preregister to ensure a space in class. Registration is accepted on a firstcome, first-served basis with a 50% deposit required. Workshops must be paid in full at time of registration. Balance is due on the first day of class. Lillstreet accepts payments by visa, master card, american express or discover. Checks should be made payable to lillstreet art center.

Private Lessons Would you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from. • A two-hour minimum commitment is required. • Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three. • No previous experience necessary.

Holidays And Missed Classes: For classes that fall on holidays, it is up to individual teachers and students to decide whether to hold the class or to schedule a make up class later in the session. Missed classes may only be made up within the same class session.

Tools And Materials: Students may be required to purchase a tool kit from lillstreet, or other materials in order to complete class work. Unless otherwise specified, materials will be provided for the first class session and students will receive a supply list for purchase.

Cancellations & Refunds (Please Read Carefully)

Cancellations: Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances.

Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Creative retreats, visiting artist workshops, and summer camps have separate cancellation policies.
