Ceramics

Lillstreet’s long-established clay department offers classes for all skill levels in wheelthrowing, handbuilding and sculpture. Advanced students can fine-tune their work or experiment with soda firing. Take advantage of over 200 glaze combinations, firings and state-of-the-art equipment during our generous open studio hours.

Beginner/ Advanced Beginner Beginning/Advanced Beginning Wheelthrowing 4 Weeks Beginning students will develop fundamental throwing techniques while returning students refine their techniques to create more complex forms. Be inspired by those around you and challenged by your personal goals. Teacher demonstrations are designed for multilevel students. Class fee includes one 12-pound bag of clay.

First-Time Artist First-Time Potter 4 or 5 Weeks Dress for mess and spin the wheel to shape clay into the basic forms of mugs and bowls. You will work with various tools and later glaze your pottery. Learn a little handbuilding too, such as pinch pots, bowls and small serving trays. Plan to purchase a clay tool kit at Lillstreet on the first day of class. Class fee includes one 12-pound bag of clay.

First-Time Handbuilding 4 or 5 Weeks Learn handbuilding techniques such as pinch pots, coils and slabs to make pottery, art objects or sculptures. Primarily Porcelain Learn the properties of porcelain and refine your throwing skills on the wheel. Expect to make basic forms such as bowls, cylinders and plates. Drying, trimming, surface decoration and glazing also covered. B-clay users welcome but participation using porcelain strongly encouraged.

Back by popular demand! Learn to throw and trim well balanced bowls without the dreaded beginners hump. Bowls off the hump and larger serving bowls and platters will be demonstrated. A variety of foot styles and some decorative techniques will be discussed.

Small Sculptures, Figurines & Dolls 5 Weeks Imagination flows as you create abstract, realistic and anthropomorphic or animal sculptures. You may choose to articulate your figures through the application of kinetic elements to create a doll. All levels welcome.

Sculptural Narratives in Clay 4 Weeks What story do you have to tell? Learn handbuilding techniques to develop your ideas into clay sculpture while maturing your creative thinking process. By using research materials and asking appropriate questions, you will bring clarity to your story. This group shares ideas and process development with each other.

Figurative Sculpture 5 Weeks

Explore a step-by-step approach to body proportions, construction problem solving and internal armature, the planes of the figure, human expression and body gesture. There will be class discussions on surface treatment for sculpture. A model will be used as needed and fee collected in class. All levels welcome.

Drawing on Pots 4 Weeks Learn to use your functional pottery as a three dimensional drawing surface. Demonstrations will include use of underglazes, slips and glazes to create illustrated surfaces for either pattern or narrative elements.

Bas-Relief Tiles 4 Weeks Create one tile that, when duplicated, creates a repeating pattern. We will then make a plaster mold that will be used as a press mold. You can create your own design using graph paper to a 4.5x4.5� dimension and/or use designs provided.

4 Weeks Working from a variety of molds and other handbuilding methods, learn to create dessert plates, salad plates, dinner plates, trivets and small serving platters. You will also learn various ways to make feet, decorative rims and unique accents for your plates. Demonstrations of surface treatments will use the plate form as a blank canvas for either low fire or high fire clay.

You’ve mastered the basics, now it’s time to increase your clay skills while building functional and sculptural objects. Weekly demonstrations will teach more complex techniques to manipulate clay and allow further development of your handbuilt work. Discussions of contemporary approaches will help the you to find their voice in clay.

Demonstrations of more complex forms will encourage you to expand your repertoire of pots and build confidence. Throw taller, bigger pieces with nuance. Try new and advanced glazing techniques to create pots of your own design and aesthetic.

Prerequisite: At least two Beginning/ Advanced Beginning Handbuilding

Intermediate/ Advanced Classes Home & Garden Pottery 5 Weeks This independently driven class begins each week with a potluck and group discussion about ongoing projects. Traditional Figure Sculpture 5 Weeks Working weekly from a nude model, you will take a methodical approach to sculpting the figure. You may choose to sculpt a head, torso or full figure. Focus will be given to anatomy, body proportions, poses and gesture. Building techniques and observational skills will be emphasized. Special attention will be given to traditional and nontraditional finishing techniques for sculpture.

Put Some Clothes On! 5 Weeks

5 Weeks Explore the potential of forms we see in our daily ordinary settings such as milk jugs, soap bottles and medicine containers. Use these as inspiration for your own interpretation of household containers. This is an exercise in training the eye to see form where it would typically be overlooked. We’ll incorporate altering wheel thrown forms with a strong emphasis on surface treatments.

Clothes and fashion say so much about a person. Study the human form and learn how the weight and fit of clothes pull down and create folds. Working the clay and creating draped forms over the human form will be demonstrated. Each class will have a different clothed model for a single pose.

Looking to freshen up your Photoshop skills? Are you comfortable with layers and selection tools? Work on independently conceived Photoshop-based projects and receive personalized instruction. Appropriate for artists working in any media.

With easy technical explanations, shooting exercises and a review of student images, you will learn how to find, compose and capture compelling photographs. Camera with manual settings required, DSLR preferred. Please bring a USB drive.

Gouache is a terrific medium for learning to paint. Think of it as opaque watercolor. Easily painted over, lends itself well to small-scale still life and abstraction. Learn to hammer and manipulate copper into three-dimensional forms without soldering and enhance these metal structures by applying enamel and firing with a torch or in a kiln. Rich colors and exquisite surfaces are the result. Methods of cold joining will be implemented to transform your creations into jewelry, ornaments or objects for your home.

Learn the cloisonné technique while creating simple, decorative enameled beads that could be integrated into your jewelry design or worn on their own. Cloisonné is a technique of enameling in which brilliant colors are separated by fine silver wires, fired in a kiln and appear as delicate lines on the finished piece. Get Your Comic on the Web 4 Weeks Do you make comics? Do you want to make webcomics? Step into the digital world by scanning and preparing your images for best digital quality, learning resources for paid and free websites, building a readership, find your community and market your webcomic. For intermediate to advanced artists who have comics in progress. Adult Classes open to students 14 years and up.

Graphic Novel Studio 3 Weeks Learn the steps involved in sharing your own story. You’ll go step-by-step to learn narrative story structure, writing, scripting, thumbnailing, penciling, layout, inking and coloring a complete comic. Digital drawing and painting techniques, webcomics and self-publishing will also be explored. Open to students 13 years and up.

Make & Photograph: Miniature Worlds 4 Weeks Craft little worlds with found and handmade objects, then capture them in the style of artists and photographers like Dare Wright, Vesa Lehtimaki and Heather Angel. 3 Weeks With easy technical explanations, shooting exercises and a review of student images, you will learn how to find, compose and capture compelling photographs. Camera with manual settings required, DSLR preferred.

Explore the classic typographic form of the broadside, or poster, in this class. Using a combination of wood type, metal type and imagery, watch your broadside come to life using traditional letterpress printing techniques. Give your loved ones something handmade this holiday season. Material fee includes some paper and most printing supplies, additional paper may be purchased in class.

Metalsmithing, Jewelry & Glass Teen Metals 3 Weeks Create cool metal jewelry or small sculptures out of brass and copper sheet & wire. You will learn various skills such as piercing, forming, texturing and soldering, leading to the creation of your own designs. Open to students 10 years and up.

4 Weeks Clay Time is an opportunity for little ones to get to know clay in its many forms. Your children will work with press molds, coil building and slab-built structures to create playful sculpture and functional wares. This will help sharpen their motor skills as they use their hands as a primary tool.

Lil’Kidstreet A creative community for our youngest members: 0-4 years old Lil’ Kidstreet inspires your child’s natural delight for song, rhythm, color and texture. We combine visual art and music to encourage developmentally appropriate learning through original songs, musical instruments, rhythm-based activities, paint, clay and collage. These classes are the first step in the foundation of exploration, creativity and enthusiasm for art and music.

Open Art Play for Lil’ Kids! Ages 0-4 years Drop in, $5 per day Join a 5-week Lil’Kidstreet class, and you can drop in to any of our open studio sessions! No pre-registration necessary.

Private Lessons Would you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from. • A two-hour minimum commitment is required. • Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three. • No previous experience necessary.

Holidays And Missed Classes: For classes that fall on holidays, it is up to individual teachers and students to decide whether to hold the class or to schedule a make up class later in the session. Missed classes may only be made up within the same class session.

Tools And Materials: Students may be required to purchase a tool kit from lillstreet, or other materials in order to complete class work. Unless otherwise specified, materials will be provided for the first class session and students will receive a supply list for purchase.

Cancellations & Refunds (Please Read Carefully)

Cancellations: Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances.
