We’re looking forward to all the challenges and opportunities that will be coming our way this year. We’ve been making great strides in reorganizing the Painting & Drawing department to take advantage of the beautiful figure studio across the street at the Drawing Workshop. This spring the figurative sculpture program will also be moving over there, giving clay students the chance to have a dedicated space for sculpture. We’re also really excited to have a multi-function room here at Lillstreet, a space for interesting classes and experimentation for both adults and children. The Loft and Ignite are great additions to the community as well. The Loft offers a fantastic space for private events, special classes, guest lectures, arts-based professional development, and teambuilding, creative retreats, and more. We’ve been thrilled with the interest in some of our public programs, especially the Artist-in-Residence talk in the winter and upcoming artist talks. The Ignite teambuilding programs have been a big hit, and we’ve been excited to welcome Kraft, Google, The University of Chicago, and Wrigley among many others to Lillstreet. If you haven’t had a chance to see the Loft, make sure you find the time to take the trip up the street and take a peek. Members form the backbone of the Lillstreet community, and we would like to encourage all of you to consider supporting Lillstreet by becoming a member. What does membership offer? Discounts on classes, a 10% discount on gallery purchases, a free t-shirt, discounts and special offers at partner organizations, special members only events, and the opportunity to apply to be a part of the annual member sale, a juried show of student/member work. Becoming a member also helps support Lillstreet as a whole, providing growth and stability as we try to update classrooms, modernize systems, install a new elevator, and generally continue to make Lillstreet the amazing place that it is. We’re looking forward to a new season of making art and creating and sharing new ideas. Community has always been important at Lillstreet, and we’re thankful and grateful for the continuing support and constant inspiration offered by all of our students. We can’t wait to see what’s next.

SCULPTURAL NARRATIVES IN CLAY A narrative is open to expressing oneself through a story or an event, and you will learn to translate that into sculpture. This class will help you be able to reflect yourself or elements you observe in your life and begin to incorporate it in your clay work. You will learn to interpret the world around you and develop that information in a constructive way. As we develop your projects, you will begin to understand what topics concern you and begin to find your voice in clay. By gathering your observations through writing, we will be able translate your artist’s journal to create your vision of how you see yourself and your world. As a narrative artist, I will break down my process and show successful examples that different forms narratives can take. All levels are welcome. Technical skills will not be a factor in class. Beth Adler uses a variety of source materials to make her print plates–hair pulled from a brush, grasses from the garden, bubble wrap from a recent package, the net covering from a wine bot tle, or a mass of seaweed from the beach. All these items take on new meanings when inked and run through the press to create landscape-like compositions. In combining these materials along with stencils inspired by shapes found in nature, Adler finds new meaning in what may have been cast off as refuse.

MULTILEVEL PRINTING ON FABRIC IMMERSION DYES WITH RESISTS

INDIGO, KAKISHIBU + NATURAL DYES

( 5 WEEKS )

( 5 WEEKS )

In this 5 week intensive class we will create custom color dye baths using different combinations of primary colors, learning how to get repeatable shades onto natural fabrics with MX dyes. Resist and discharge printing produce beautiful cloth, yielding two tone effects, but can often emit harmful vapors. Using nontoxic inks and extenders students will stamp and print designs prior to dyeing, leaving areas of cloth rejecting the dye. Alter ego dyes will also be sampled. Students will provide natural fabrics after the first week of class. Materials fee includes all dyes in class and open studio and fabric on first day. A resource list will be provided by the instructor.

Kakishibu is a tannin juice from persimmon fruits that has been used not only as a dye but also as paint, glue and water proof material in Japan for over 400 years. In dyeing it creates various browns and works well with indigo blues. Whether you are new to dyes or want to expand your range of fiber techniques, this class explores natural dyes and their various shades. This class explores indigo, kakishibu and some natural dyes with Shibori resist techniques onto natural fabrics such as silk, cotton and linen. Instructor will present visual resources and samples, and briefly cover some of the history of techniques. Students will provide fabrics after the first week of class. Materials fee includes all dyes in class and fabric on first day.

Client Story: Kimpton Hotel Group

A T E A M F R O M K I M P T O N H O T E L S C A M E T O L I L L S T R E E T I G N I T E for a one-of-a-kind team building activity: an artisan- inspired event that would allow for creativity, socializing, and making memories as a team. With those key themes in mind, and the world class reputation Lillstreet has for ceramics instruction — the perfect activity was arranged and aptly named Cocktails & Clay. Not only would the group make their very own ceramic whiskey cups, but they would be treated to a special whiskey tasting by a local artisan vendor! Chicago ceramic artist and Lillstreet Ignite facilitator, Sam Hostert, taught the team how to mold and shape their own whiskey cups. She encouraged the group to add their own personal touches. The simple design served as a springboard of inspiration; while each cup could be a traditional cylindrical shape, the team was able to get incredibly creative with the surface techniques and treatments. After everyone had finished their own pair of cups, they were treated with an hour long whiskey tasting from local distillery KOVAL. Lillstreet Ignite strives to use local, artisan vendors whenever possible to make each experience all the more special. The KOVAL distillery is certainly local– located only one mile north of Lillstreet! KOVAL is known for its organic, hand-bottled spirits, which made the tasting a truly unique experience. Glenn I. said of the activity, “We truly enjoyed ourselves, and everyone is still talking about it. What a blast!” The Lillstreet Ignite staff believes that thoughtful details contribute to an outstanding experience. By arranging a KOVAL tasting, adding an element of friendly competition, and providing each participant with their own work of art, Lillstreet Ignite guaranteed a memorable event that brought the team even closer together.
