Gemma Arterton (Tamara Drewe) stars as the near-namesake of Flaubert’s Emma Bovary in this witty film adaptation of Posy Simmonds’s satirical graphic novel. Gemma and her husband move to rural Normandy. Besotted local baker Martin (Luchini) ends up spying on her when she begins affairs with an air-headed aristocrat and an ex-beau. As in Flaubert’s novel, these liaisons go very wrong, delivering wildly amusing consequences.

Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay star in this powerful relationship drama as Kate and Geoff Mercer, a couple preparing to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary. Geoff is unsettled by the news that the body of Katya, a long-lost sweetheart, has been discovered frozen in a Swiss glacier. Initially sympathetic, Kate is first disturbed and then angered by Geoff’s revelation that he is Katya’s next-of-kin. Their quietly affectionate, deep-rooted marriage then has to endure unfamiliar doubts and misgivings. The attractively washed-out Norfolk setting somehow reflects the sense of empty betrayal Kate must weigh against her husband’s admirable qualities, and the sensitive yet forceful performances of the two leads are hugely rewarding.

Strindberg’s masterful dissection of class prejudices shaken by lust is newly adapted by the legendary Liv Ullman. Jessica Chastain plays Miss Julie, a troubled 19th-century aristocrat who falls for her father’s valet, John (Farrell). John is seduced, but has strong feelings about the social order. The talented cast give superb, emotionally nuanced performances in this haunting tale. Contains moderate sex references, moderate bad language and infrequent bloody moments.
Steeped in his familiar, wryly voiced stew of existential doubts, Irrational Man is Woody Allen’s highly enjoyable latest. Joaquin Phoenix plays troubled and famously hellraising philosophy professor Abe Lucas. He first attracts the attentions of bored science professor Rita (Posey), and later of student Jill (Stone, Match Point). After overhearing a conversation in a diner, he is inspired to concoct a crime that he feels will make the world a fairer place. Contains infrequent strong language and moderate sex references.
With a demonstrably bigger budget than 1990s biopic The Krays, Oscar-winning screenwriter Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential, Mystic River) directs this rather different and fascinating take on twin brothers Ronnie and Reggie, who ruled London’s gangland in the late 1950s and ’60s. Intriguingly, Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road) plays both of them. Helgeland concentrates on Reggie’s efforts to curb his brother’s psychopathic tendencies as the pair try to stay out of reach of the long and often corrupt arm of the law. Paying them attention is Angelo Bruno (Palminteri, The Usual Suspects), who is keen to recruit the pair as the UK branch of the Mafia. The brothers are wary of this idea, for very different reasons. Their gripping story unfolds in a finely nuanced period crime drama with a hefty side order of carnage.

Director: Asif Kapadia. Featuring: Amy Winehouse. UK 2015. 128 mins. Multiple-award-winning documentarian Asif Kapadia has reassembled the team behind his stunning Senna to create a full-access film about Amy Winehouse, the extraordinary musician who died in 2011 at the age of 27. The documentary features interviews with some of her closest friends, family, former bandmates, management, producers and collaborators. As with Senna, however, Kapadia eschews talking-head interviews, sticking to his preferred format of using 100% archival footage, even when presenting newly recorded audio material from the participants. The film also features unheard tracks and unseen footage, some of it sourced from Winehouse’s closest friends. Revealing a brilliant artist in all her complicated fragility, Amy will undoubtedly not only speak to her existing fan base, but also win over a whole new audience wishing to engage with an affectionate and frank portrait of a talent who died too soon.

Opening as a tense action thriller, Hirschbiegel’s second foray into Nazi history after Downfall follows Georg Elser’s (Friedel, The White Ribbon) unsuccessful attempt to assassinate Hitler with a bomb that exploded 13 minutes too late. The film then flashes backwards and forwards between Elser’s gradual path to radicalisation and the increasingly desperate efforts of his captors to uncover a nonexistent political conspiracy.

Ace joker Robin Williams’s final film has him voicing Dennis, a dog belonging to weary teacher Neil (Pegg), on whom the power to do Absolutely Anything has been randomly bestowed by aliens (voiced by Monty Python alumni). But Neil must use his gift to do good, otherwise the aliens will destroy the world. Directed and co-written by comic genius Terry Jones, a madcap series of misadventures ensues. Contains infrequent strong language and moderate sex references.

Long stereotyped as purveyors of mindless pop, The Beach Boys are now hailed as one of the most artistically significant bands of all time. Love & Mercy centres on the fall and rise of visionary songwriter Brian Wilson, juxtaposing his slide into mental illness during the 1960s with his recovery and redemption in the 1980s. Co-written by Oren Moverman, who wrote Todd Haynes’s acclaimed Dylan biopic I’m Not There, Love & Mercy similarly has different actors representing the same character. Paul Dano is astonishing as the younger Brian, overwhelmed by elation and despair while creating the album Pet Sounds; John Cusack gives his best performance in years as the broken older Brian, rescued from a controlling ‘therapist’ (Giamatti) by the love and determination of Melinda Ledbetter (Banks). The result is a film that’s heartbreaking and uplifting at once – much like Wilson’s music. Contains drug use, references to child abuse and infrequent strong language.

Following on from his riveting tale of survival at sea, The Deep, Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur turns his attention to the highest mountain on Earth. This gripping drama is based on a disastrous 1996 expedition when eight climbers lost their lives attempting an ascent on Everest. Two teams led by Scott Fischer (Gyllenhaal) and Rob Hall (Jason Clarke, Lawless) battle vicious snowstorms and avalanches to reach the summit of the world’s most unforgiving mountain. Both groups get trapped in the harshest of conditions, and a subsequent rescue party becomes mired in a deadly struggle to bring them back. With its spectacular cinematography, Kormákur’s edge-of-the-seat thriller maximises the use of Nepal’s spectacular mountain vistas. The film also stars Josh Brolin, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley and Emily Watson. Contains moderate threat, injury detail and upsetting scenes.

Inside Out (U)
In this hilarious tale based on Bill Bryson’s bestselling memoir, Robert Redford plays the genial author, determined to hike the entire 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail, despite the bemused protests of his wife (Thompson). Anxious for the companionship on the walk that none of his other friends is keen to provide, Bryson reluctantly agrees to accept the company of Katz (Nolte), a cantankerous comrade from his distant past. Their consequent adventures, orchestrated with a deft comic touch by director Ken Kwapis (American TV’s The Office), turn out to be somewhat different to what either imagined as they make their way along the trail, encountering the charming locals (including Mary Steenburgen, pitch-perfect as a lonely motel owner) and predatory animals of the large, furry variety. The venerable cast are clearly having as much fun as audiences will.

Purbeck Film Festival, now in its 19th year, is the UK’s longest-running rural film festival. The festival is organised almost entirely by volunteers, and screens around 70 international films across Purbeck, Poole and Bournemouth over two weeks – bringing people together to celebrate film.
