DEAR LIFT Supporters, People always say it’s not the destination that matters but the journey. I just have to say… what a journey we have been on AND WOW… already it really feels like we have arrived! Our first full school year serving Catoosa County students was a huge success. It was also a beautiful and occasionally messy experiment, as we learned what worked well and what needed to be adjusted. Volunteers, parents, and students were so gracious as we worked through the learning curve of our first year. Our LIFT Staff has done an amazing job creating, leading, and evaluating the programming we have offered. The journey has been extraordinary in and of itself, and the impact is already being realized!

This report tells the story of the last year. You will read about how many students attended the youth center after school and what they did. Between those lines are other tales. Tales of students who were on the verge of a suicide attempt before we came alongside, of Mandated Reporter calls made to protect children who were in danger, of extraordinarily shy students who found confidence and friends in our safe space. So many times, we were able to be present for students in critical ways. We saw evidence, even in the first year of building relationships, of a great need being met.

In this report you will see our fundraising efforts and powerful evidence of the support we are receiving from our local community and beyond. With the help of outstanding businesses, foundations, and individuals, we have been able to give this quality, after-school experience to students at no charge. Again, if you could read between those lines you would learn of a grandmother who donated to fund scholarships for summer programs, of students who made crafts to sell at a LIFT fundraiser, and of volunteer workshop leaders who would buy their own supplies for class. Everyone is contributing! LIFT Staff continues to work hard to secure the large amount of funding it takes to produce the quality and excellence we are ensuring.

There is more to do, but what has already been accomplished is miraculous!

On these pages you will see smiles, skills, and support in the making. You will see teens being loved, inspired, found, and trusted. You will see how far we’ve come in just a year, and I hope you can imagine where we are headed. THANK YOU for making the steps of this journey possible. Claudia Nance Rollin s Youth Cen ter Claudia Nance Rollins was a devout Christian, a talented musician, a dedicated elementary school teacher, and a gardener so gifted with plants and flowers that her extended family in Catoosa County often compared her gardens to a beautiful painting. But Mrs. Rollins was first and foremost the mother of O. Wayne and John W. Rollins, both successful entrepreneurs and business men.

Born on September 28, 1886 to Robert and Emma Nance, Claudia was one of nine children raised by a widowed mother in the rural community of Smith Chapel. When she was 24, she married a local farmer named Henry Rollins, a man whose quiet strength and quick temper were a perfect match for the energetic and insightful Claudia.

An early champion of education, Mrs. Rollins helped the community build churches and schools. She was known to all as a neighbor who always helped the less fortunate, someone who set in motion the very principles of philanthropy that her sons later embraced.

As a mother, Mrs. Rollins impressed upon her two sons that they could achieve anything through honesty, integrity and hard work. Her two sons never failed to heed their mother’s words and collectively founded eight different companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Claudia Nance Rollins lived to be nearly 90 years old. She died on April 13, 1976.

LIFT held our ribbon cutting

on April 30, 2021. It launched our pre opening. We held 23 summer events to get to know students in catoosa county before our grand opening.

Grand opening was on August 7, 2021. We had a wonderful event that allowed students to enroll for the 21-22 school year. Students were all set to attend after the first day of school.

• Monthly service projects: building benches for the city of Ringgold, repairing the Ringgold Creek boardwalk, knitted hats for the Department of Family and Children Services, Pennies for Prom, Clean Catoosa (a county-wide clean-up earth day event), landscape clean-up at the center, built bird houses for the Ringgold Creek trail, packed snack packs for Nourishing Children in Catoosa, made cookies for neighboring preschool, and made art for a local nursing home.

Mentoring During LIFT’s first year open afterschool students were given the opportunity to have a mentor.

7 students throughout the year each had a mentor that they would meet with weekly.

These mentoring relationships provide a consistent trusted adult for students. It gives students a safe environment where mentors share life experiences and help students navigate any life challenges they may be facing.

Tutoring In the Spring of 2022, we were able to add free tutoring as an option. LIFT was able to help 5 students by providing them with free tutoring with an educator. The grades below show the improvement from the 3rd nine weeks grade to the 4th nine weeks grade within their tutored subject. We anticipate this program growing in the 2022-2023 school year.

“Sam saught tutoring for reading and writing essays. I began by introducing graphic novels to gain his interest. This helped him become comfortable with the material. I then introduced chapter books to increase his reading ability. We also worked on essay writing. We worked on sentence structure and organizing his thoughts into paragraphs. I was very pleased with his progress.

He received a 100% on his last school essay which really helped his self confidence to continue reading and improving.”

LIFT is excited to be able to fund this tutoring program at no cost to students and families thanks to the Georgia Department of Education and the Georgia Statewide Afterschool Network approving LIFT Youth Center Inc to receive funding through the competitive Building Opportunities in Out-of-School Time (BOOST) Grants Program! Social Emotional Learning Social Emotional Learning is configured of five components: • self-awareness • self-management • social awareness • relationship skills • responsible decision-making During after-school programming at LIFT, we offered an SEL workshop with a monthly theme that we encouraged all our students to participate in once a month.

January: was the importance of mental health and goals. During this month we focused on how our mental health affects us, connecting to resources, and goal exploration/setting which connected to self-awareness.

February: was identifying strengths and using strengths to cope with difficult situations. We focused on strength exploration and self-care, which is related to self-management and managing emotions.

March: we focused on communication and relationship skills using “I” statements and active listening. This of course relates to the 3rd component of relationship skills.

april: the monthly topic was how to handle stress. We discussed coping skills, mindfulness, and social support. This relates back to self-management and managing emotions.

may: we focused on self-esteem talking about our best possible self, body positivity, life story, and core beliefs. This last month relates back to self-awareness.

We had other social-emotional learningfocused workshops like Music Matters which is where students discussed their favorite song and how the song makes them feel. This workshop was a great way for students to express their emotions. We also held many team-building workshops which relates back to the social and emotional learning component of relationships skills.

Support Groups Over the 2021-2022 school year LIFT was honored to partner with local organizations to host several support groups. These groups are offered in the evening and are open the community.

Parent Guardian Nights LIFT offered six Parent/Guardian Workshops during the 2021-2022 school year.

We recognize the great honor and challenge of raising children in today’s world, and as often as we can we want to bring encouragement, resources, and training in both hard and soft skills to all P/G’s in Catoosa County (student enrollment is not necessary and no registration needed to attend).

County government, the City of Fort Oglethorpe, the City of Ringgold, Catoosa County Chamber of Commerce, and other local non-profits held our third annual county-wide Earth Day initiative to celebrate and contribute to the beauty of our environment.

Community Events

In the summer of 2021 LIFT held our first annual Ringgold Creek Regatta on July 24. It was a free fun family event open to the community. It was a chance enjoy the beautiful outdoors our county has to offer.

We had paddlers and floaters join us in a race along the South Chickamauga Creek in Ringgold.

Strength for Catoosa In August of 2021 students were invited to apply for Student Leadership. In September we started monthly Student Leadership meetings that went throughout the year. Afterschool Student Leaders helped out by leading announcements, welcoming new students, leading specific workshops, and helping the leader of other workshops. In the spring of 2022 Student Leaders attended a training from a national trainer with Sources of Strength, a suicide prevention program. This group is now a planning team for our community initiative, Strength for Catoosa.

Strength for Catoosa is a county-wide Sources of Strength wellness and suicide

prevention initiative spreading messages of hope and health. Non-profits, civic leaders, business people, spiritual institutions, health providers, families, and individuals have all gotten involved.

Sources of Strength is a nationally renowned, strength-based, comprehensive wellness program that focuses on suicide prevention but impacts other issues such as substance abuse and violence. Our group will use this program to guide our work because we want to really change the way people engage with issues of Mental Health, wellness, and connection in their own lives, and to enact that change on a cultural and community level.

Boost Grant The Georgia Department of Education and the Georgia Statewide Afterschool Network approved LIFT Youth Center Inc to receive funding through the competitive Building Opportunities in Out-of-School Time (BOOST) Grants Program!

LIFT Youth Center Inc is honored to be one of 104 organizations (4 statewide organizations with statewide reach and 100 community-based organizations) awarded a BOOST grant, funded with American Rescue Plan (ARP) funds.

“The BOOST grants are a crucial part of our strategy to address learning loss as a result of the pandemic,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. “These 104 organizations will provide opportunities for students that support both academic learning and the needs of the whole child. I appreciate the Georgia Statewide Afterschool Network lending their expertise to this initiative.”

The BOOST grant will allow LIFT to greater serve Catoosa County 6th-12th grade students with robust programming at no cost to LIFT students and families. Having no fees for these services further gives access to what has become high quality programming, family support, and student services. All of LIFT’s programming falls under one of the five categories of our R.E.A.C.H.

About BOOST:

The BOOST grants program provides three-year grants, renewed annually, to community-based organizations that operate comprehensive out-of-school time (OST) programming year-round, over the summer months, or after school during the academic year. The goal is to provide evidence-based afterschool and summer enrichment programs that target learning acceleration and provide whole child supports, thus removing non-academic barriers to learning for students most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Grants will support students’ learning, connectedness and well-being, all while addressing the learning loss experienced across the state in recent years. The purpose of these grants is to: 1. Expand access to serve more youth, with an emphasis on students and communities most impacted by the pandemic, 2. Reduce barriers, such as transportation and enrollment costs, to ensure access for all, and/or 3. Increase programmatic quality and expand or enhance supports and services offered.
