A NOTE FROM SUSAN

In 2017 we announced the birth of a community movement to make youth homelessness in Austin rare, brief and non-recurring by the end of 2020. In many ways, the 2019 LifeWorks Annual Report tells the story of this journey. Last year we scaled best-practice services significantly, including: •

Diversion – systems-level collaboration with AISD, juvenile justice and foster care to make youth homelessness RARE.

Permanency through Outreach & Rapid Transitions (PORT) – a transitional living to rapid rehousing program ensuring that homelessness is BRIEF.

Rapid Rehousing – apartment-based housing with significant wrap-around support to make homelessness NON-RECURRING.

Our commitment to self-sufficiency involves addressing the needs of the whole person, so housing is bolstered by evidence-based case management, mental health and workforce services. Additionally, with the support and partnership of Milestone Community Builders, we celebrated the opening of the Works II on our east Austin Campus to house and support youth transitioning from homelessness to selfsufficiency. The success we’ve had to date in ending youth homelessness is the is the result of the dedication of the fearless staff, volunteers, and youth of LifeWorks and our MANY collaborators in the movement. No other community has made this kind of progress, because no other community has the support of such fierce advocates as we have here in Austin. However, we are not finished. We need to help an additional 448 youth find stable housing and provide the support for them to thrive in 2020. The Campaign to End Youth Homelessness will raise $4.9m to ensure that our community reaches our goal and that youth homelessness truly becomes rare, brief and non-recurring! The progress we have made in ending youth homelessness demonstrates that we are on the right track, and that our goal is not only possible, but - given the passion and focus of our movement – it is inevitable! On behalf of the movement for our youth, I thank you for being a part of this truly revolutionary movement. Susan
