This Is Us is an extension of Troy’s love for people and his desire for them to know Christ. The study more specifically delves in to who we are in Christ, within the church community, and in the communities we live. If you’ve ever asked the question “Who am I?” or “What is my purpose in life?” then this study is for you. You’ll leave this series feeling a renewed sense of self and freedom to be who God has called you to be. We have confidence that you will enjoy this study and pray that God will reveal Himself to you. Community Church, What you are holding is a first for Green Bay Community Church and is the result of many prayers, work and generosity. Community church has nearly fifty years of impact in our city and we strive to continue the legacy left to us. I hope as you hold this book you realize the opportunity in front of you; the chance to experience real community. Real community does not happen from sitting in a Sunday service every week. Many people in Green Bay have grown up with a picture that church is someplace we go to fulfill religious obligations. The Church is so much more. Jesus died for more than religious tradition and obligation. He died for a bride, a community of believers that gather together, worship together and serve together. This kind of Community happens through relationships with other people and over time, those people become welcomed friends on this life journey. We have learned that the process of getting connected to others can take time and be difficult. We discovered that small groups are the most effective vehicle in developing lasting relationships and experiencing community. This small group curriculum is a four week series that through teaching and discussion,helps you know and understand what it means to be a part of Community Church. Our desire is that through this group study, you will be reminded that God created you for something so much more (or created you for something great) and that you were Created for personal connection to God himself. You will learn that your community with others is to reflect the glory of God to a broken world and you will learn that you have a Cause that is much greater than you imagined. In Acts Chapter 2 the early church did not have a clear roadmap to guide them, all they had was each other and the Holy Spirit. They spent time learning and living together to continue the legacy Jesus handed them, be the church. I want to encourage you to dive into a group with others and grow your community. Notice in the Table of Contents there are three sections: (1) Sessions; (2) Appendices; and (3) Small/Community Group Hosts. Familiarize yourself with the Appendices. Some of them will be used in the sessions themselves.

If you are leading, co-leading or hosting a small/community group, the section Group Leaders/Hosts will give you tips for effective leadership, encourage you, and help you avoid a few common obstacles.

Use this workbook as a guide, not a straitjacket. If the group responds to the lesson in an unexpected but honest way, go with that. If you think of a better question than the next one in the lesson, ask it. Take to heart the insights included in the Frequently Asked Questions pages and the Group Leaders section.

OUTLINE OF EACH SESSION A typical group session for the This is Us study will include the following sections. Read through this to get a clear idea of how each group meeting will be structured: WEEKLY MEMORY VERSES. Each session opens with a Memory Verse that emphasizes an important truth from the session. This is an optional exercise, but we believe memorizing scripture is a powerful way to grow spiritually. We encourage you to give this important habit a try. The verses for each session are also listed in the appendix. INTRODUCTION. Each lesson opens with a brief thought that will help you prepare for the session and get you thinking about that week’s topic. Make it a practice to read these before the session. You may want to have the group read them aloud. SHARE YOUR STORY. The foundation for spiritual growth is an intimate connection with God and His family. You build that connection by sharing your story with a few people who really know you and who earn your trust. This section includes some simple questions to get you talking—letting you share as much or as little of your story as you choose. HEAR GOD’S STORY. In this section, you’ll read the Bible and listen to teaching in order to hear God’s story—and begin to see how His story aligns with yours. When the study directs you to, you’ll watch a short teaching segment on video. You’ll then have an opportunity to read a passage of scripture and discuss both the teaching and the text. The goal isn’t to accumulate information, but to apply the insights from scripture to your daily life.

STUDY NOTES. This brief section provides additional commentary, background, or insights on the passage you’ve studied or on some aspect of the video teaching. CREATE A NEW STORY. In this section, you’ll have an opportunity to go beyond Bible study to biblical living. This section will also have a question or two that will challenge you to live out your faith by serving others, sharing your faith, or worshiping God. FOR ADDITIONAL STUDY. If you have time and want to dig deeper into more Bible passages about the topic, we’ve provided additional passages and questions. You can use them during the meeting or as homework. Your group may choose to read and prepare before each meeting in order to cover more biblical material. Or, group members can use the additional study section during the week after the meeting. If you prefer not to do study homework, this section will provide you with plenty to discuss within the group. These options allow individuals or the whole group to expand their study while still accommodating those who can’t do homework or are new to your group. DAILY DEVOTIONS. Each week on the Daily Devotions pages, we provide scriptures to reflect on between sessions. This provides you with a chance to slow down, read just a small portion of scripture each day, and pray through it. You’ll then have a chance to journal your response to what you’ve read. Use this section to seek God on your own throughout the week. This time at home should begin and end with prayer. Don’t get in a hurry; take enough time to hear from God and talk to him!

The website Quora.com has a simple tag line: “The best answer to any question.” Quora users find these “best answers” by searching through the questions others are asking— everything from “What are the side effects of eating avocado?” to “How do stores use psychology to make us buy more?”—and submitting their own. Recently one user of Quora asked, “What is life? Why am I here?” He received more than 50 answers, including “Nobody knows, so just relax and have fun” to “Listen to your inner voice” to “There is nao purpose. You are a cosmic accident.” Quora might be a great site for researching practical questions, but for the really important questions of life it falls far short! Fortunately we have a better source to tell us why we’re here and what life is all about—the Bible. As we kick off this series, let’s consider what God says about why he created us and what we’re called to do. For these questions, God’s word is always our best answer.

LEADER/HOST NOTES If your group is new, welcome newcomers. Introduce everyone – you may even want to have name tags for this first meeting. Open your group with a brief prayer asking God for insight as you study. You can pray for specific requests at the end of the meeting, or stop momentarily to pray if a particular situation comes up during your discussion. Before you start this first meeting, get contact information for every participant. Take time to pass around a copy of the Small Group Roster on page 73 or a blank sheet of paper. Ask someone to make copies or type up a list with everyone’s information and email it to the group during the week. Ask permission to share their contact info with the group. Whether your group is new or ongoing, it’s always important to review your values. On page 63 is a Small Group Agreement with important values for sustaining healthy, balanced groups. Choose one or two of these values – ones you haven’t previously focused on or have room to grow in – to emphasize during this study.

HEAR GOD’S STORY Read Ephesians 2:4-10. What is one reason God has shown us mercy and grace? (verse 7)

Why is it so important that we are saved by grace, instead of being saved by anything we have done? List some of the things this passage teaches us about who we are in Christ; for example, we are greatly loved and we are alive with Christ (verse 1). How do these truths give us a purpose? Why does God prepare good works for us to do?

CREATE A NEW STORY In this section, talk about how you will apply the wisdom you’ve learned from the teaching and Bible study. Then think about practical steps you can take in the coming week to live out what you’ve learned. Why is it so important to understand the reasons God created us? React to the idea that God created us to enjoy life. Is this a new thought for you? What has God blessed you with?

STUDY NOTES In this passage from Ephesians 2:10, some versions translate “handiwork” as “workmanship” or even “masterpiece.” In fact, the Greek word used here implies a poem or other artistic creation. We are God’s work of art, masterfully and intentionally created by Him. Not only are we prized children of God, but we were created so we could do works of our own. It’s an amazing thought to consider that God created opportunities ahead of time for us to do good and bless others as we travel through life. Consider what it means for God to have designed you with the gifts and talents you have, and ask Him to help you make the most of the good works He’s created you to do.

What does it mean to walk with God? What does it mean to work with God? Take a look at the Circles of Life diagram below and write the names of two or three people you know who need to know Christ. Commit to praying for God’s guidance and an opportunity to share with each of them. Would they be open to joining the group? Share your lists with the group so you can all be praying for the people you’ve identified. This week how will you interact with the Bible? Can you commit to spending time in the Daily Devotions? At your next meeting, talk about your progress and challenges.

Reflect:

If we have been called by God, we can be confident that God is working in our lives. What are some ways he has worked for your good, even in difficult times?

Why are we called by God? What promises does he make us in this verse?

Spend a few minutes today thanking God for creating you and giving you a purpose. He knew you and loved you before you were born!

We are not only created to know God and serve him, but we can have confidence that he will help us at every step. What is God doing in your life? How is it encouraging to realize he’s still working in you?

Ultimately our purpose is to make the Lord known with our life. Spend some time praying about how God can use you to share his good news with the world.

CREATED FOR CONNECTION Cease striving, and know that I am God. (Psalm 46:10)

Many families have traditions, often connected to holidays or special events. Perhaps your family always attends church on Christmas Eve or bakes a special dessert for birthdays. Families also have rules: call if you’re going to be late, everyone helps clear off the table after dinner, take off your shoes at the front door. The specifics vary from one household to another, but every family benefits from communicating expectations and celebrating special moments. Understanding our expectations gives us the “why” we are so committed to the traditions. The same is true for our spiritual family: our gatherings always include worship, scripture, and prayer. We remember Christ’s sacrifice by regularly participating in communion. And we study God’s Word to know how he wants us to live and what he wants for our church. However, sometimes when we do not know the “why” in our faith traditions we can turn meaningful practices into mindless routines, or we allow our relationship with God to turn into a list of rules to follow. Today we’ll look at what it means to give up the control that comes from following rules and how that leads to the connection our hearts long for.

Share about a time when you broke the rules as a child. What happened? What was your punishment?

Share something you learned from your Daily Devotions this past week.

In the last session we asked you to write some names in the Circles of Life diagram. Who did you identify as the people in your life who need to meet Jesus? Go back to the Circles of Life diagram on page 19 to help you think of various people you come in contact with on a regular basis; people who need to know Jesus more deeply. Consider ideas for action and make a plan to follow through on one of them this week.

HEAR GOD’S STORY Read Matthew 22:34-40. Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” 37

Questions Some Pharisees believed there were more important and less important laws—that not all of God’s instructions carried equal weight. So they may have been asking this question to see if Jesus agreed with them. How would His answer have surprised them? What does it mean to love God with your mind? With your heart? With your soul?

If Jesus can so easily sum up his teaching in two statements, are the Law (the books of the Old Testament that outline how God’s people were to follow him) and the Prophets (the books of prophecy in the Old Testament) still important? Why or why not?

Then think about practical steps you can take in the coming week to live out what you’ve learned. Why are we so concerned with having rules for our faith? Why do we like “fences”? How do rules lead to shame? How do they lead to guilt?

What does it mean to resign from saving yourself?

Here are a number of traditions or routine practices that can be empty rituals and can also be meaningful ways to honor God. For each one, think about how it can be a rule to follow and then consider how it can be a way to connect with God and others. For instance, Bible reading can be something to cross off your to-do list so you stay on schedule, or it can be an opportunity to learn more about who God is and how he loves you. How does a focus on rules or a desire for control keep you from connection to God? From connection with others? In what area do you most struggle to trust God? Here are some simple ways to connect with God. Tell the group which ones you plan to try this week, and talk about your progress and challenges when you meet next time. Prayer. Commit to personal prayer and daily connection with God. You may find it helpful to write your prayers in a journal. Daily Devotions. The Daily Devotions provided in each session offer an opportunity to read a short Bible passage five days a week during the course of our study. Take time to read carefully and reflect on the passage. Write down your insights about what you read each day. Copy a portion of scripture on a card and tape it somewhere in your line of sight, such as your car’s dashboard or the bathroom mirror. Or text it to yourself! Think about it when you sit at red lights or while you’re eating a meal. Reflect on what God is saying to you through these words. On the sixth day summarize what God has shown you throughout the week. Give each person an opportunity to share prayer requests. If you’d like, you can write these on the Prayer and Praise report on page 72. Close your meeting with prayer.

Read Matthew 23:23-28. In this passage, Jesus is speaking harsh words to the Pharisees, a group of religious leaders who believed following very detailed and precise rules was the way to please God. Read through these verses. Is Jesus more concerned with the internal heart or the external behavior? What are the “cup and dish” that need to be cleaned? Re-read verse 23. Is Jesus saying none of the externals matter? What distinction is he making?

Read 2 Corinthians 3:12-18. Read Exodus 34:29-35. Why did Moses wear a veil? How does Christ remove that veil? What connection with God do we have if we turn to the Lord – too cliché – can we use a different phrase? How does the Spirit bring freedom? 32

Reflect:

As we talked about this week, often we try to control our lives with fences because we don’t trust God. In what parts of life do you need God’s guidance and counsel?

Do you struggle to trust God because you think you won’t be happy or enjoy life? How do these verses change your thinking?

How does this passage tell us to connect with God? How is this the opposite of trying to control life?

We can try to follow all the rules and take charge of our lives, but ultimately God is in control. How can you align the plans in your heart with the purposes of God?

We please God not by following rules, but by allowing him to transform us. As we end this week, take some time to ask him to renew your mind and show you how to follow his will.

CREATED FOR COMMUNITY Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. (1 Corinthians 12:7)

When we think of gifts, we often think of piles of presents under a Christmas tree, or a wedding registry, or maybe a beautifullywrapped box for our birthday. Imagine if you decided to never open these gifts that were given to you? In the Bible, we read about a different kind of gift. These don’t come from a store, they come from the Spirit, and they won’t fit in a bag or under a tree. Instead, they become part of who we are as God entrusts each one of us with unique talents and abilities. These gifts are also different because they’re not ours to keep. God doesn’t give us talents or skills so we can just use them for ourselves— in fact, the whole point is to bless others. In order for us to use these gifts for others we must open the gifts we have been given. We are created to connect, contribute, and commit to a church family, and today we’ll talk about how we can use who we are to be part of the spiritual family God’s given us.

Read 1 Peter 4:10-11. The Greek word translated as “various” means “of many colors.” When we all use our gifts, we create something more beautiful than any of us could alone. How are the various gifts designed to work together? Peter says we should use our gifts faithfully. What does this mean? How is using our gifts a stewardship issue? How do we demonstrate God’s grace to others when we use our gifts?

Read Acts 2:42-47. How is the community life described here different from what we experience today? Why do you think this is? Are there things this early church did that we should be more intentional about doing? Later on the church will be heavily persecuted, but here it says they had “the favor” of everyone in the city. There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills— to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts.

So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and selfdiscipline.

If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

Reflect:

God values the behind-thescenes talents just as much as the up-front abilities. Do you tend to think of some gifts as more important than others?

Even at the beginning of God’s story with His people, He is equipping them with talents. Note that here, as in the other passages we’ve studied, these skills are given to serve Him and bring Him glory. There are many ways to serve God, including professional and artistic gifts. What abilities do you have that could honor God?Do you have professional or artistic abilities that could be used to honor God? 46

What are the reasons given here for God gifting His people? How can your gift contribute to one of these goals?

God equips us with spiritual gifts so we can act! Do you need love, self-discipline, or a spirit of power in using your gift? Ask God to help you grow in that area.

Day 6

The gifts are a gift from God, but they are never more important than growing in love for others. Ask God to help you grow in His love as you grow in community with his church.

We see our reflections throughout the day. In the morning as we get ready and at night as we brush our teeth before bed we see ourselves in the bathroom mirror. We see ourselves as we open the glass doors of the bank or walk by the polished walls of a city skyscraper. Even just driving the car we catch glimpses of ourselves as we glance into the rearview mirror. Each day see our own image in the glass and mirrors, but each day is also an opportunity for people to look at us and see Jesus. As we walk with God, give God control of our lives, use our gifts to serve him, and use our lives to honor him, the people around us see his glory. As we close this study, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s consider what it means to reach the world and reflect God in every moment.

What does it mean to practice and play? Why are both important?

In the passage we studied today from Matthew 5, Jesus calls his followers the light of the world. When we read these words, we should feel a sense of responsibility to show his glory to others.

What adventure is God calling you to? Are you willing to take the next steps?

However, several times in the Gospel of John Jesus refers to himself as this light: When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

Have you ever shared your faith story with anyone else? Is there someone in your life you could share your story with?

As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world. (John 9:4-5) As we connect in community, serve others, and share our stories, we are not only reflecting his love and his grace to those around us - we are also being Christ. Jesus is the light of the world, and he has given us the amazing privilege of reflecting his light through our lives.

Review your Small Group Agreement on page 63 and evaluate how well you met your goals. Discuss any changes you want to make as you move forward.

Close by praying for your prayer requests and take a couple of minutes to review the praises you have recorded over the past five weeks on the Prayer and Praise Report on page 72. Spend some time thanking God for all He’s done in your group during this study.

(verse 3) In this culture, washing the dirty and dusty feet of others was a job for the lowliest household servant. SMALL GROUP AGREEMENT

What do we do on the first night of our group?

Our Purpose:

Like all fun things in life—have a party! A “get to know you” coffee, dinner, or dessert is a great way to launch a new study. You may want to review the Group Agreement (page 63) and share the names of a few friends you can invite to join you. But most importantly, have fun before your study time begins.

Can we do this study on our own?

Absolutely! This may sound crazy, but one of the best ways to do this study is not with a full house but with a few friends. You may choose to gather with another couple or a few friends who would enjoy going out for dinner and then walking through this study.

What if this group is not working for us?

You’re not alone! This could be the result of a personality conflict, life stage difference, geographical distance, level of spiritual maturity, or any number of things. Relax. Pray for God’s direction, and at the end of this study, decide whether to continue with this group or find another. However, don’t bail out before the four weeks are up—God might have something to teach you. Also, don’t run from conflict or prejudge people before you have given them a chance. God is still working in your life, too!

To provide an environment where the 4G’s can be lived out and a person who is at any point of his discipleship journey can learn what it means to take steps. To be a place to be known and cared for.

To give priority to the group meeting. We will call or email if we will be late or absent. (Completing the Group Calendar on page 64 will minimize this issue.) To create a safe place where people can be heard and feel loved. (Please, no quick answers, snap judgments, or simple fixes.) To be gentle and gracious to fellow group members with different spiritual maturity, personal opinions, temperaments, or “imperfections.” We are all works in progress.

Who is the leader?

Most groups have an official leader. But ideally, the group will mature and members will rotate the leadership of meetings. Healthy groups often rotate hosts and leaders on a regular basis. This model ensures that all members grow, give their unique contribution, and develop their gifts.

Confidentiality

To keep anything that is shared strictly confidential and within the group, and to avoid sharing improper information about those outside the group.

How do we handle the childcare needs in our group?

Encouragement for Growth

To be not just takers but givers of life. We want to spiritually multiply our life by serving others with our God-given gifts.

Shared Ownership

To remember that every member is equipped to minister to others and to ensure that each attender will share a small team role or responsibility over time.

Rotating Hosts/Leaders and Homes

To encourage different people to host the group in their homes and to rotate the responsibility of facilitating each meeting. (See the Group Calendar on page 64.)

Very carefully. Seriously, this can be a sensitive issue. We suggest that you empower the group to openly brainstorm solutions. You may try one option that works for a while and then adjust over time. One approach is for adults to meet in the living room or dining room and to share the cost of a babysitter (or two) who can watch the kids in a different part of the house. This way, parents don’t have to be away from their children all evening when their children are too young to be left at home. A second option is to use one home for the kids and a second home (close by or a phone call away) for the adults. A third idea is to rotate the responsibility of providing a lesson or caring for the children. This can be an incredible blessing for kids. Finally, the most common solution is to decide that you need to have a night to invest in your spiritual lives individually or as a couple and to make your own arrangements for childcare. No matter what decision the group makes, the best approach is to dialogue openly about both the problem and the solution.

HOSTING AN OPEN HOUSE

LEADING/HOSTING FOR THE FIRST TIME

If you’re starting a new group, try planning an “open house” before your first formal group meeting. Even if you have only two to four core members, it’s a great way to break the ice and to consider prayerfully who else might be open to joining you over the next few weeks. You can also use this kick-off meeting to hand out study guides, spend some time getting to know each other, discuss each person’s expectations for the group and briefly pray for each other. A simple meal or good desserts always make a kick-off meeting more fun.

Sweaty palms are a healthy sign.

After people introduce themselves, have everyone respond to a few icebreaker questions: • What is your favorite family vacation? • What is one thing you love about your church/our community? • What are three things about your life growing up that most people here don’t know? Next, ask everyone to tell what he or she hopes to get out of the study. You might want to review the Small Group Agreement and talk about each person’s expectations and priorities. Finally, set an open chair (maybe two) in the center of your group and explain that it represents someone who would enjoy or benefit from this group but who isn’t here yet. Ask people to pray about inviting someone to join the group over the next few weeks. Hand out postcards and have everyone write an invitation or two. Don’t worry about ending up with too many people; you can always have one discussion circle in the living room and another in the dining room after you watch the lesson. Each group could then report prayer requests and progress at the end of the session.

The Bible says God is gracious to the humble. Remember who is in control; the time to worry is when you’re not worried. Those who are soft in heart (and sweaty-palmed) are those whom God is sure to speak through.

Seek support.

Ask your leader, co-leader, or close friend to pray for you and prepare with you before the session. Walking through the study will help you anticipate potentially difficult questions and discussion topics.

Bring your uniqueness to the study.

Lean into who you are and how God wants you to uniquely lead the study.

Prepare. Prepare. Prepare.

Go through the session several times. If you are using the video, listen to the teaching segment and Leadership Lifter. Don’t wait until the last minute to prepare.

Ask for feedback so you can grow.

Perhaps in an email or on cards handed out at the study, have everyone write down three things you did well and one thing you could improve on. Don’t get defensive. Instead, show an openness to learn and grow.

Prayerfully consider launching a new group.

This doesn’t need to happen overnight, but keep growth as a goal. Not all Christians are called to be leaders or teachers, but we are all called to be “shepherds” of a few someday.

Share with your group what God is doing in your heart.

God is searching for those whose hearts are fully his. Share your trials and victories. We promise that people will relate.

You can skip this kick-off meeting if your time is limited, but you’ll experience a huge benefit if you take the time to connect with each other in this way.

LEADERSHIP TRAINING 101 Congratulations! You have responded to the call to help lead your group. As you prepare to lead, whether it is one session or the entire series, here are a few thoughts to keep in mind. 1. Remember that you are not alone. It is common for good leaders to feel they are not ready to lead. Moses, Solomon, Jeremiah, and Timothy were all reluctant to lead. God promises, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). Whether you are leading for one evening, for several weeks, or for a lifetime, you will be blessed as you serve. 2. Don’t try to do it alone. Pray right now for God to help you build a healthy leadership team. If you can enlist a co-leader to help you lead the group, you will find your experience to be much richer. This is your chance to involve as many people as you can in building a healthy group. All you have to do is call and ask people to help. You’ll probably be surprised at the response. 3. Just be yourself. If you won’t be you, who will? God wants you to use your unique gifts and temperament. Don’t try to do things exactly like another leader; do them in a way that fits you! Just admit it when you don’t have an answer, and apologize when you make a mistake. Your group will love you for it, and you’ll sleep better at night! 4. Prepare for your meeting ahead of time. Review the session and the leader’s notes, and write down your responses to each question. Pay special attention to exercises that ask group members to do something other than engage in discussion. These exercises will help your group live what the Bible teaches, not just talk about it. Be sure you understand how an exercise works, and bring any necessary supplies (such as paper and pens) to your meeting. If the exercise employs one of the items in the appendix, be sure to look over that item so you’ll know how it works. Finally, review “Outline for Each Session” so you’ll remember the purpose of each section in the study. 5. Pray for your group members by name. Before you begin your session, go around the room in your mind and pray for each member by name. You may want to review the prayer list at least once a week. Ask God to use your time together to touch the heart of every person uniquely. Expect God to lead you to whomever He wants you to encourage or challenge in a special way. If you listen, God will surely lead!

pray or do anything. If you give them a safe setting, they will blossom over time. 7. Provide transitions between questions. When guiding the discussion, always read aloud the transitional paragraphs and the questions. Ask the group if anyone would like to read the paragraph or Bible passage. Don’t call on anyone, but ask for a volunteer, and then be patient until someone begins. Be sure to thank the person who reads aloud. 8. Break up into smaller groups each week. If your group has more than seven people, we strongly encourage you to have the group gather at times in discussion circles of three or four people during the Hear God’s Story or Change Your Story sections of the study. With a greater opportunity to talk in a small circle, people will connect more with the study, apply what they’re learning more quickly, and ultimately get more out of it. A small circle also encourages a quiet person to participate and tends to minimize the effects of a more vocal or dominant member. When you gather again at the end of the section, you can have one person summarize the highlights from each circle. Small circles are also helpful during prayer time. People who are unaccustomed to praying aloud will feel more comfortable trying it with just two or three others. Also, prayer requests won’t take as much time, so circles will have more time to actually pray. When you gather back with the whole group, you can have one person from each circle briefly update everyone on the prayer requests. People are more willing to pray in small circles if they know that the whole group will hear all the prayer requests. 9. Rotate facilitators weekly. At the end of each meeting, ask the group who should lead the following week. Let the group help select your weekly facilitator. You may be perfectly capable of leading each time, but you will help others grow in their faith and gifts if you give them opportunities to lead. You can use the Small Group Calendar to fill in the names of all meeting leaders at once if you prefer. 10. One final challenge (for new or first time leaders): Before your first opportunity to lead, look up each of the five passages listed below. Read each one as a devotional exercise to help yourself develop a shepherd’s heart. Trust us on this one. If you do this, you will be more than ready for your first meeting.

6. When you ask a question, be patient. Someone will eventually respond. Sometimes people need a moment or two of silence to think about the question. If silence doesn’t bother you, it won’t bother anyone else. After someone responds, affirm the response with a simple “thanks” or “good job.” Then ask, “How about somebody else?” or “Would someone who hasn’t shared like to add anything?” Be sensitive to new people or reluctant members who aren’t ready to say, 70
