Happy Father's Day
Happy June, everyone!
Since I first stepped into the world of storytelling, I have been gripped by a need to write about my dad. Notebooks clogged my desk, their pages filled with poetic accounts of father-son vacations and late-night truck rides. I tried and tried, over sleepless nights and cramped study halls, to put that man into simple words—to catalogue, in no uncertain terms, the thousand ways I saw him, the thousand little miracles he performed each day.
I failed, of course. I was trying to itemize a love that was boundless. That kind of affection resists being measured or neatly contained. But this, too, is a blessing. I will never stop finding new things in my father to be amazed by. I will never be left wanting for greatness to aspire to or kindness to emulate. Each year, I am reminded how great fathers are gifts that never stop giving.
In the following pages, you’ll gain a brief glimpse into the extraordinary fathers, brothers, and businessmen who make the home and our communities that much more special. I’m certain you’ll enjoy reading articles this month highlighting men in business, including Wonders Ornamental Iron, Home Instead Brea, Classique Worldwide Transportation, Steadfast Tree Care, and Mindful Wellness.
In the Business Monthly section, we feature Re-Bath Anaheim, Black Gold Golf Club, Intro Wheels, and The Law Office of Anthony J. Dispoto.
As Father’s Day approaches, we are yet again granted the opportunity to thank these incredible figures in our lives—the men who shaped us, loved us, and gave us something to aspire to. As we connect and reconnect, I encourage each of our readers to show their gratitude and admiration in some small way, as we try to do the same.
Wishing you all a happy Father’s Day this June, and remember to stay hydrated!

AN EXCERPT FROM EPISODE 6 OF SHARE THE LIFESTYLE, A CITY LIFESTYLE PODCAST
Photographer: Brittany Dawn Short
Creative Director: Jen Birn
Stylist: Stephanie Coultress O’Neill
Location: Hotel Saint Cecilia, Austin, TX
MIKE JOHNSON HAS BUILT HIS LIFE AROUND ONE QUIETLY RADICAL IDEA: THE STANDARD YOU SET PRIVATELY IS THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS.
After eight years in the Air Force, a celebrated run on national television, and a health crisis abroad that sent him deep into supply chains and ingredient certifications most founders never touch, the result is Oshun — a luxury ritual brand built on provenance you can trace and integrity you can verify. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Mike shares what it actually takes to build something worth putting your name on. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full episode.
Q: YOU BECAME A FAN FAVORITE ON THE BACHELORETTE AND THEN LEFT THE SPOTLIGHT. YOU MOVED TO MEXICO, LEARNED SPANISH, THEN COSTA RICA, AND BUILT A COMPANY. WHAT DID THAT EXPERIENCE TEACH YOU ABOUT HUMAN BEHAVIOR?
A: “If you’re a good person going in, that shows. If you’re not, that shows too. I also learned that people form this parasocial relationship with you — they assume things about you. When all actuality, different circumstances bring out different parts of who you are. I was on TV trying to find love. The kindness people were showing after felt a bit fake, because they wanted to be a part of something that isn’t who I am individually, but a part of what they saw on TV. And so I had to get away from everybody and everything and the noise.”
THE QUIET STANDARD:
MIKE JOHNSON
“Too many people have prayed for me. So I’ve got to get up and do the walking.”
— Mike Johnson
Q: YOU JOINED THE AIR FORCE RIGHT OUT OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WHAT WERE YOU ACTUALLY RUNNING TOWARD?
A: “There was something in me that was saying: I’m not living up to my full potential. I was being a follower. My uncle said, ‘What’s going to make you become an adult the fastest?’ I said, obviously, the military. The Air Force broadened my thought process more than anything. We’re so caught up in our own perception — when you learn to understand different people’s perspectives, it adds to you in so many ways.”
Q: WITH OSHUN, YOU OWN YOUR MANUFACTURING, YOU EMPLOY A CHEMIST, EVERY PRODUCT HAS A BATCH NUMBER TRACEABLE TO ITS ORIGIN DATE. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO THAT DEEP WITH THE BRAND?
A: “The EU bans 1,100 ingredients in personal care products. The U.S. bans nine. That’s my starting point. Oftentimes, it might be the same ingredient, but it comes from a place where it doesn’t have the highest purity. And 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed. Every product Oshun makes carries a batch number that goes back to the exact day it was created — I can show you every single supplier, the date, the origin. I own more than one part of the supply chain because that’s the only way I can stand behind what’s in the bottle.”
This conversation is just the beginning. Mike goes deeper into why he’s buying land up north, the family in the Philippines who prayed over his factory floor, and what he’d tell every person ready to stop performing and start building. ROOTED IN LEGACY
STEADFAST TREE CARE DELIVERS EXPERT, INTEGRITY-DRIVEN SERVICE, PRESERVING SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA LANDSCAPES, STRENGTHENING COMMUNITIES, AND BUILDING LASTING TRUST THROUGH PRECISE CARE, SAFETY, AND FAMILY-CENTERED VALUES LOCAL.
In Orange County, where tree-lined streets soften the coastal light and backyards double as gathering places, the presence of mature, well-tended trees is part of what makes a house feel like home.
This June, as Father’s Day brings a moment to think about legacy and the care that shapes a family’s future, Steadfast Tree Care reflects those same values in its work and spirit.
Owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Martin and Paulina Paramo, Steadfast Tree Care is a local business built on skill and exceptional customer care.
Together with their team, the couple has shaped a company culture that feels personal and genuine. Their work is grounded in knowing that what’s done today shapes what grows tomorrow.
For Martin and Paulina, each project is a chance to care for a home’s landscape while preserving the natural beauty of Southern California.
“My inspiration for Steadfast Tree Care comes from a deep admiration for trees and the essential role they play in our
environment, neighborhoods, and everyday lives. This business was born out of more than 12 years of experience in the arbor industry, during which I developed both a passion for the work and a clear sense of purpose. Over time, I felt the Lord place a vision on my heart to build something meaningful and lasting. I recognized a gap in how tree care is perceived, often treated as an afterthought rather than a vital part of the home service industry. I truly believe that we are among the first to intentionally embrace and promote this perspective, elevating the value of professional tree care while serving our community with integrity, excellence, and a steadfast commitment to both people and the environment.”
The company’s growth hasn’t come without obstacles, but those moments have only strengthened its foundation.
The business is closely tied to Martin and Paulina’s life as partners and parents, guided by the same values they live by at home.
“This journey has been filled with both challenges and victories, shaping us in ways we never expected. Through every high
and low, we have remained grounded by keeping the Lord at the center of our lives and our decisions. There were times when the road felt overwhelming, but our faith reminded us that we were never walking it alone. Along the way, we’ve learned the importance of perseverance, patience, and staying true to our values. Above all, our children have remained our greatest priority, motivating us to continue moving forward with purpose, integrity, and hope for the future we are building together as a family.”
That philosophy translates into a level of care that clients recognize. Each job is approached with precision and respect for the property, balancing aesthetics with long-term health.
A keen attention to detail has become a defining characteristic, earning the confidence of their clients.
“For over a decade, we’ve focused on safety, precision, and customer satisfaction— values that guide every project we take on.
From routine maintenance to complex removals, our goal is to keep your property healthy, beautiful, and secure year-round.”
Their name signals a promise to stay dependable through every season. For this company, success isn’t just about growth, but the relationships built and trust earned over time as well.
“We have many hopes and dreams for Steadfast Tree Care and are excited about what the future may bring. Our goal is to continue growing a company built on integrity, excellence, and a genuine commitment to serving our community and caring for the environment. We are dedicated to working diligently and building something meaningful that lasts for years to come. No matter what the future holds, we desire to remain faithful in our work, steadfast in our values, and confident that God will guide Steadfast Tree Care according to His purpose.”

Southern California’s premier luxury limousine and car service redefines the upscale transit experience, including airport transfers, special events, and more
ARTICLE BY HEATHER WHITSITT
In operation for more than 35 years, Classique Worldwide Transportation has been regarded as Southern California’s premier luxury car and limousine service—an elevated standard in ground transportation defined by discretion and timeless style.
Serving Orange County and beyond, the company delivers seamless, first-class journeys designed to feel as refined as the destinations themselves, echoing a spirit of generational guidance and enduring excellence that makes it especially resonant this Father’s Day season.
President and Founder Kevin Illingworth credits the success of his longtime business to superior customer service.
Although technological advancements may change what the future of transportation looks like, the Air Force vet’s client-centered focus remains at the forefront of how he does business.
“In my book, customer service hasn’t changed. From day one, it’s been important to me, and it’s what I stress to my employees. Client demands are different, but not in terms of delivering on customer service. The memorable moment is always making the experience right, and if you can create that for the customer, I think you have them for a lifetime,” he says.
“As a world-class Ground Transportation Company, Classique Worldwide Transportation will get you to your destination safely with a professionally trained chauffeur. As your safety is our highest priority, we
employ only professional, courteous chauffeurs who undergo thorough background checks. They are also trained to provide you with the highest level of firstclass hospitality and customer service.”
Their curated collection, including sedans, SUVs, limousines, Sprinter vans, mini coaches, and buses, is designed to meet the expectations of an increasingly discerning clientele.
“Our large fleet of luxury vehicles is also regularly upgraded to ensure that our clients always travel in modern luxury, with the latest amenities, for the utmost in comfort.”
Their vehicles, ranging from 2-passenger sedans to 56-passenger motor coaches, are inspected daily to maintain the highest safety standards.
They evoke understated opulence, with leather seating, advanced entertainment systems, and amenities designed to transform transit into an unmatched experience.
Classique provides top-notch transportation for an array of special events, including corporate functions, groups and conventions, weddings, proms, concerts, birthday celebrations, and airport transfers.
“As a world-class Ground Transportation Company, Classique Worldwide Transportation will get you to your destination safely with a professionally trained chauffeur.”
Their airport transportation service offers safe, stress-free transfers across all major local airports and Fixed Base Operators in the Los Angeles, Orange County, Inland Empire, and Northern San Diego areas.
As a fully licensed airport transportation provider, they have the necessary permits to whisk you past security checkpoints.
FAA tracking of all flights ensures on-time pick-ups, whether flights arrive early or late.
Classique also offers curated tours for locals and visitors, including Temecula Wine Tours and an LA Sightseeing Tour.
That attention to experience traces back to Kevin Illingworth’s entry into the luxury transportation industry, which began after a moment of personal frustration with a limo company.
At the time, Kevin was a young man already flexing his business acumen, running his thriving commercial window tinting and stereo installation business.
“I started Classique Worldwide Transportation in the late 1980’s with one limousine. I became interested in the limousine business when I booked a limousine for an evening out, and it never showed up,” he recalls.
“I was surprised by the company’s lack of customer service and can attribute my success in the industry to always putting the customer first.”
Soon after, Classique Worldwide Transportation was born. Over time, it has developed into a company shaped by both family and long-standing relationships.
Alongside his team, Kevin’s business continues to expand. His wife, Cindy,
oversees HR, while his son Devan serves as Business Development Manager.
Operations Manager Glenn Gonzales and General Manager Carolyn Kent—who has been with the company for decades—complete a leadership structure defined by loyalty and experience.
Kevin and his team are also anticipating major upcoming events in the area, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics, with plans for Classique to support both global spectacles.
The business also gives back, partnering with the Make-AWish Foundation of Orange County and the Inland Empire.
“They’re really battling their own battle, but they’re also so appreciative,” Kevin says of Wish recipients and the gratitude they commonly express over riding in one of their elegant limousines.
“Hearing that is one of those things that keep me going, because those kids are just amazing,” he says.
That sense of purpose extends beyond the charity work and into how he reflects on the business as a whole.
“It’s not an easy business, but everything we own, everything we’ve done has been because of Classique. This business put two kids through college. I know people who have ‘escaped,’ but they usually come back. It’s like a bug,” he jokes.
“You know, I consider the people that I’ve met in this industry—customers and partners—to be just as important to me as my own family. What I’ve learned is to surround myself and work with only the best operators in the world. No matter where I go, I know that there’s an affiliate there.”
That philosophy carries through into how he defines the company’s promise to clients.
“With a focus on building lasting relationships with our clients, we take extreme care in the service we provide to you, your family, guests, and colleagues. This is my word.”

IRON, INTEGRITY, AND FATHERHOOD BEHIND EVERY CUSTOM CREATION
ARTICLE BY HEATHER WHITSITT
Wonders Ornamental Iron reflects on Emmanuel Gonzalez’s dedication to craftsmanship, family guidance, and generational impact.
Father’s Day invites reflection on the influence of fathers, from the lessons they pass down and the sacrifices they make to the legacies they build with their hands and hearts. For Emmanuel Gonzalez, that legacy is forged—literally—in iron.
By day, he’s at Wonders Ornamental Iron, where the sound of a hammer on metal carries through the shop. At home, he’s a father.
Founded six years ago, Emmanuel’s business traces his growth in the trade and his commitment to supporting his family.
Over the years, Wonders Ornamental Iron has steadily evolved, expanding beyond its early projects into a respected name in custom metalwork.
Emmanuel has never strayed from the principles that first guided him: patience, precision, and pride in every detail.
As demand grew, so did the scope of his creations, from intricate gates and railings to large-scale architectural features.
Yet despite this growth, the heart of the business remains unchanged: a commitment to craftsmanship that values quality over speed.
With more than twenty-five years of experience, Emmanuel’s work stands apart in a market often driven by convenience.
At the core of his approach is traditional blacksmithing, the age-old practice of shaping metal by hand. This method demands time, strength, and deep technical knowledge, but also allows for a level of customization that machine-based production cannot replicate.
Each piece begins as raw material and is carefully transformed through heat and skill into something entirely unique.
Clients are drawn to this process because it turns ideas into tangible works of art.
Rather than relying on prefabricated designs, Emmanuel hand-forges most of his creations, ensuring durability while capturing fine details that reflect each client’s vision.
His philosophy is simple: if something can be imagined, it can be built.
This mindset has helped establish Wonders Ornamental Iron as more than a service; it is a creative partnership grounded in trust and collaboration.
For Emmanuel, however, success is measured by more than business achievements. As a father, he views his greatest responsibility as shaping the character of his children.
He teaches them to lead with love, to approach others with empathy, and to build relationships on a foundation of respect.
Honesty, he believes, is nonnegotiable, a guiding principle that should remain steady even when circumstances are difficult.
He also emphasizes responsibility, encouraging his children to understand that every choice carries consequences.
Perseverance is equally important, teaching them not to abandon their goals when faced with obstacles. Gratitude plays a central role as well, reminding them to appreciate what they have rather than constantly seeking more.
Above all, he hopes they grow with faith in God, finding strength and direction in something greater than themselves.
Ultimately, Emmanuel feels that the most meaningful legacy he can leave is not found in the iron he shapes, but in the lives he influences.
Through his work and his example, he is building more than a business—he is crafting a life defined by purpose, integrity, and enduring values.
In many ways, his story reflects the spirit of Father’s Day—a reminder that dedication at home and at work often shape each other.
The lessons he imparts extend beyond his family, inspiring clients and the greater community to value craftsmanship and character.
By balancing ambition with humility, Emmanuel continues to shape not only metal but also a legacy that will endure for generations to come and remain a testament to purpose and love always.

The Heart of Caregiving at Home Instead-Brea
INSIDE HOME INSTEAD-BREA’S MEANINGFUL MISSION OF CARE, SHAPED BY STRONG FAMILY VALUES AND PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
ARTICLE BY HEATHER WHITSITT
Ricardo, Abel, Ben, Dorian, Charles, Ken and Rhett
In a season dedicated to celebrating fathers, it’s the perfect time to reflect on how fatherhood shapes lives within families and across communities.
For Ken Tabb, owner of Home Instead in Brea, the meaning of Father’s Day extends far beyond a single Sunday in June.
It reflects a lifelong example of compassion, responsibility, and hands-on care that influences how he leads, serves, and gives back each day.
“My journey began with a family legacy of care. While both of my parents were deeply compassionate, this Father’s Day, I am reflecting specifically on my father’s example. He defined ‘care’ through action, managing a household where his mother and special-needs sister lived with him. Because of that dedicated environment, my grandmother lived to be 106 years old.”
That kind of upbringing continues to shape how Ken consistently shows up for others.
“When I left the corporate world of sales, I knew I wanted to do something where I could make a real difference. I was drawn to Home Instead because their heart for seniors showed in every aspect of their business. It allowed me to take the “caregiving spirit” I saw in my father and mother, Beulah, and share it with my community,” he explains.
Today, that spirit is at the heart of his work. As more families navigate the challenges of caring for aging loved ones, the wish to stay at home surrounded by familiarity and independence has only grown.
For Ken, honoring that wish is personal.
“I understand firsthand what it means to age with dignity. When assisting my aunt, we had many conversations about her living alone; she wouldn’t have it any other way. In a world that sometimes feels like it’s leaving them out, seniors want to maintain control and ownership. Her home held her memories and possessions—it was her space. At Home Instead, we make it easier for seniors to stay in the homes they love.”
Since taking ownership of the business in 2019, Ken has witnessed a significant shift in the industry. In a field once dominated by women, the need for male caregivers has grown.
“While some clients are initially reluctant to welcome a man into the home, they quickly discover the unique strength, companionship, and perspective a male caregiver provides. It is often exactly what the family truly needed.”
Ken may not be a biological father, but he’s helped raise two incredible young women—his stepdaughter ZsaRhya and his cousin Brieana.
“Supporting them has taught me that life is about giving back. That is the ‘heart of a father.’”
That “heart of a father” shows up in unexpected ways—especially with more men stepping into professional caregiving roles.
Whether it’s physical support, shared life experience, or simply a steady presence, they’re helping fill a real need.
“We don’t just provide a service; we continue a legacy. As a Christian, my faith deeply influences my desire to make a difference. At Home Instead— Brea, we truly care for the well-being of our clients because all of us have personal experience caring for loved ones. We always say this is not just a job—it’s a calling. Taking care of your family is who we are.”
Ken Tabb, owner
SoI joined Home Instead in February 2025, bringing years of personal experience caring for his grandfather and uncle through their journeys with Alzheimer’s and dementia. For Sol, caregiving isn’t just a career, but a way to honor the elderly with the respect they deserve. His background with IHSS and current role as a family caregiver demonstrate his thoughtful compassion. Sol finds peace in assisting others, ensuring every senior feels supported and valued.
Ben joined Home Instead in December 2024, bringing nearly eight years of experience and a deep understanding of aging to our team. His clients, like Miss Betty, often form strong, trusting bonds with him, consistently reporting that they feel safe and truly cared for in his presence. For Ben, caregiving is a joyful calling rooted in a genuine love for people. His exceptional service and dedication make him an invaluable asset to our family.

PICKLE-BRINED CHICKEN WINGS SOAR TO THE NEXT LEVEL WITH ALABAMA WHITE SAUCE.
Pickle In A
I’ve spent years searching for the perfect wing flavor, never quite satisfied, until I heard a podcast suggestion: brining chicken wings in pickle juice. It sounded strange at first, but it yields incredibly tender and flavorful wings! Since then, I save pickle juice from every jar I buy just to recreate these beloved wings. If I run out of pickle juice, olive juice works too. I air fry mine, but if you don’t have an air fryer, cook them as you normally would. Don’t forget to toss them in a buttery dill sauce and try the Alabama white BBQ sauce for an extra layer of goodness!
Pickle Juice Brined Wings
INGREDIENTS
• 2 pounds chicken wings (flats and drummettes)
• Pickle juice - enough to cover wings
• 1 – 2 teaspoons garlic salt
• ¼ teaspoon pepper
• 6 tablespoons butter
• A few dashes of hot sauce
• 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Place chicken wings in a non-reactive container and pour pickle juice over chicken wings until completely covered.
2. Place it in the fridge and let it marinate, covered, for at least 8 hours.
3. Drain wings, discard pickle juice, and completely pat wings dry.
4. Put dried wings in a bowl and sprinkle with garlic salt and pepper. Mix well.
5. Place wings in an air fryer basket, being careful not to crowd. Cook at 400 degrees for 28 minutes, turning every 8 minutes until crispy. If you don’t have an air fryer, bake them in the oven for 35 - 40 minutes at 400 degrees, flipping halfway through.
6. Melt the butter and add a few splashes of hot sauce of your choice and mix in a bowl. Add wings and completely cover with butter mixture. Sprinkle with fresh dill and toss a few times, and serve with my white barbeque sauce.
Alabama White BBQ Sauce
INGREDIENTS
• 1 ½ cups mayonnaise (I prefer Duke’s)
• ¼ cup water
• ¼ cup white wine vinegar
• 1 tablespoon pepper, coarsely ground
• 1 tablespoon Creole mustard
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon sugar
• 2 garlic cloves, minced
• 2 teaspoons prepared horseradish
INSTRUCTIONS
Whisk all ingredients together until blended. Dip your pickle juice-brined wings in this sauce and taste the joy! Store in the refrigerator for 1 - 2 weeks.
Is Whiskey On Ice
Nice?
BY EVE BUSHMAN
In speaking to Whiskey lovers (most happen to be men, but do accept me in their brethren as a fellow enthusiast, writer, and educator), I’ve learned a great many opinions on how to drink Whiskey. Specifically, preferences on adding water and ice vary greatly.
A brand ambassador that I had the privilege of listening to recently said the obvious: both dilution and temperature change when you add ice, so if you are going to add something, a little water is best. I personally prefer to use a water dropper, so I can add one drop at a time until I get to the desired taste.
THE BEST WAY TO ENJOY YOUR WHISKEY: ON THE ROCKS, ROCK, NEAT, OR WITH WATER
HERE ARE THE DIFFERENCES:
Rocks: Provides the highest rate of dilution as a lot of ice melts quickly. If you are drinking a barrel proof Whiskey, it kind of defeats the purpose as the distiller didn’t add water as they do in every other type of finished Whiskey.
On the Rock: The single rock, cube, or sphere is the slowest to melt and thought to be the most aesthetic. It’s nice if you want to stretch out your tasting. I often order on the rock if I want my drink to last longer.
Neat: This is the way single malt Scotch is served at a tasting event, in a branded Glencairn or Neat glass so that proper nosing for aromas can be achieved - and a dram of Scotch, smaller than an ounce, fits in them perfectly.
Water: As I mentioned above, quoting the brand ambassador, a little water is better for a fine Whiskey over any kind of ice. Often, if ordered with water, the water is served in a separate vessel on the side so you can add in as much as you want.
Quoting another expert on the subject, Richard Paterson of The Dalmore famously and enthusiastically demonstrates in his Scotch classes how to drink single malt Scotch Whiskey: Paterson fills a lowball glass to the rim with ice, adds Scotch and then ceremoniously throws it over his shoulder onto the carpet of the classroom – because that much ice makes the drink worthless. One more quote, never “add green tea or milk to Whiskey. You can add a little water, but not a lot of ice.”
Ultimately, the reason we add ice can be for aesthetics, to stretch out the time spent on one glass, for cooling, and for dilution. However, the number one reason enthusiasts add water is … drumroll please … because adding a little water actually opens up a Whiskey to show more aromas and flavors.
“My wife has always been active and enjoyed being outdoors.
Due to a sudden stroke, she found herself in a health crisis and required post-acute rehabilitation. She needed 24-hour nursing care, assistance with eating and physical, occupational and speech therapy. For her post-acute needs, we chose Park Vista Skilled Nursing – an established facility located in Fullerton. We had a great experience!”

GUYS’ GUYS’ GETAWAYS GETAWAYS
FOUR GREAT PLACES FOR GROOVES, GRUB AND GAWKING WITH BEST BROS
Has it been too long since your tribe gathered to rib and one-up each other as only guys can do? To help plan a getaway for just the guys, City Lifestyle gathered an eclectic list of locations offering tons of things to see, do and experience. Here’s hoping the only ribs one will get on this guys’ getaway are the kind to hold in hands while barbecue sauce drips onto shirts.
Scottsdale/Phoenix
There’s no other tournament on the PGA Tour like the Waste Management Phoenix Open and no hole like the legendary 16th, where 20,000 boisterous fans boo the tee shots that miss the green. The other 51 weeks of the year, golfers can play TPC Scottsdale or try one of more than 200 courses in the Scottsdale area, a top golf destination. Another winter event is the BarrettJackson Collector Car Auction. Even if one’s only collector car was a Hot Wheels, it’s a blast to peruse the acres of autos for sale before heading inside to watch the unique or renowned cars crossing the auction block. When it’s time to get moving, the strenuous hike up Camelback Mountain in nearby Phoenix is a bucket-list item. Need a more moderate trail? Experience the same magic of the majestic saguaro cactus in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.
New Orleans
It’s always a party in New Orleans (NOLA), especially when it comes to festivals, many of them centered around music. Folk to funk, gospel to jazz, zydeco, blues, African and other musical styles are celebrated on the Jazz and Heritage Festival’s 12 stages. If free admission is more desired, don’t miss the French Quarter Festival featuring local musicians and food vendors representing
dozens of New Orleans restaurants. Part of the fun of Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo is admiring revelers’ watercraft, some of them homemade just for this festival on the banks of Bayou Saint John. If one of the festivals can’t be attended, there’s still plenty of NOLA live music, particularly the jazz clubs on Frenchmen Street. And when a break from crowds is needed, take a guided swamp tour. Kitschy, yes, but it’s a hoot to cruise around on a swamp buggy while looking for alligators.
Bowling Green, Kentucky
“America’s Sports Car” is produced at the Bowling Green Assembly Plant, where visitors can join guided tours to observe Corvettes being built and learn the fascinating history of these sexy autos. See examples of all Corvette generations at the National Corvette Museum. And if the need for speed is still felt, a few times a year Xtreme Experience offers driving or ride-along events in exotics like Ferraris or Lamborghinis at the National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park. After getting all revved up, cool down at Mammoth Cave National Park, the longest known cave system in the world and a World Heritage Site, where guided tours take participants through tunnels humans have used for thousands of years. And after all this touring, the Bowling Green area is the southernmost point in the Kentucky Bourbon Trail of distilleries.
Austin
Live music rules here, with iconic venues such as Antone’s, The Continental Club, the White Horse and hundreds of other locations, from dive bars to big stages. From rock and blues to country and urban, music is heard every night of the week (and many afternoons as well). When guys are hungry, there are tons of barbeque and Tex-Mex joints. Unique food trucks are truly a thing here, with nearly 2,000 food trailers in town. Burn some calories biking or running the Southern Walnut Creek Trail or one of many paved paths. Get out on the water in a kayak, canoe or stand-up paddleboard on Lake Travis or Lady Bird Lake. Take a dip in the historic Barton Springs Pool, where the underground springs keep the water around 68 degrees all year.
