Kids & Pets

August - Kids & Pets Issue

This issue holds a special place in my heart. Children are more than just the future—they are the heartbeat of our communities today. Their laughter, their curiosity, and their potential shape the world in ways we can’t fully measure.

As parents and caregivers, we put so much effort into nurturing their growth, teaching them, and investing in their futures. But let’s not forget that children also shape us—they bring joy, laughter, and meaning to our everyday lives.

But we also cannot overlook the powerful role pets play in our families. They offer unconditional love and teach us valuable lessons in empathy, responsibility, and companionship. The bond between kids and their pets can be transformative, fostering deep emotional connections that last a lifetime.

At the core of both children and pets is a simple truth—they need us. Our care and attention shape who they become, and in turn, they shape us. This issue is dedicated to celebrating the kids and pets who fill our homes with joy and love.

Please enjoy features articles from Ketchum Health, Aloha Veterinary Hospital, The Good Shepard, Pet Dog Parks, Kids Back to School and N Sports Zone Orange County. Each article has great messages for all of us.

I hope this month’s issue inspires you to pour a little extra love into the children and pets in your life. They are the ones who remind us of the simple joys and the importance of unconditional love.

Here’s to our future, our little ones, and the pets who make everything better. Thank you for reading Lifestyle and I hope to see you around town!

Cheers!

THE SHEPARDS METHOD

From pack walks to purpose: The Good Shepards’ pivotal role in shaping the dog industry

What began as a simple pack walk—a van, a handful of dogs, and one woman’s intuition—has become a movement redefining canine training and wellness.

“Each dog in our care is part of something bigger: a lifestyle rooted in calm leadership, thoughtful communication, and long-term wellbeing.”

When founder Isabella Shepard set out on local trails with a group of dogs during the height of the pandemic, she wasn’t launching a business—she was answering a calling.

She observed an unsettling trend: anxious, under-socialized dogs struggling to navigate the world.

She studied their behavior and began training with a firm yet compassionate approach.

What followed was a transformation—not just for the dogs, but for their families, the community, and the industry itself.

“Today, The Good Shepards is more than a training company; it’s a philosophy, built on the belief that structured learning fosters freedom, obedience builds trust, and balanced dogs lead peaceful lives.”

Daily pack walks evolved into an immersive training and wellness experience designed to help dogs thrive mentally, emotionally, and physically.

A HIGHER STANDARD FOR CANINE CARE

Here, training is not just about teaching commands—it’s about developing a relationship grounded in leadership and understanding.

“We believe that every dog in our care should be learning, growing, and supported in a proactive environment.”

Every dog in their care is either enrolled in a training program or has graduated from one.

They’re not a traditional dog-walking or daycare service; they’re a values-driven community committed to raising the standard of canine well-being.

SERVICES DESIGNED FOR GROWTH AND STABILITY

The Good Shepards offers the following for their canine clients (and their owners):

• Training Programs & Day Trains—Private training, immersive day trains, and behavior modification for challenges like reactivity, off-leash reliability, and confidence-building

• Pack Walking—Structured group walks reinforce impulse control, neutrality, and calm focus, mimicking natural canine hierarchy

• Daycare—Purposeful engagement, enrichment activities, and rest—not chaotic free play, but structured socialization

• Selective Boarding—Reserved for trained or actively training dogs, ensuring a consistent routine and continued obedience reinforcement

• Specialized Group Classes—Advanced sessions tailored to specific training needs

In addition to the services they provide, it’s the culture at The Good Shepards that sets them apart from other providers in the industry.

Their clients aren’t just looking for convenience; they value peaceful coexistence, trust, and lifelong harmony between humans and dogs.

THE GOOD SHEPARDS FOUNDATION: PAWS WITH PURPOSE

Three years ago, The Good Shepards Foundation emerged from a deep belief: dogs don’t just need connection—they offer it

“The nonprofit arm of our business focuses on the power of the pack to provide therapy for youth, survivors of trauma, and under-supported communities. Our pack of therapy dogs are carefully selected and trained to remain neutral, calm, and connected in a variety of high-stress environments.”

At its core, the foundation operates with a mission of rescue, rehabilitation, and purpose—transforming overlooked dogs into therapy animals that bring comfort and stability to high-stress environments. Whether helping neurodivergent students or providing companionship during difficult therapy sessions, these dogs are doing the work—offering safety, regulation, and healing where it’s needed most.

What’s next for TGS and TGSF?

THE GOOD SHEPARDS COMPANY

As we look ahead, the future of The Good Shepards is rooted in growth—not just in size, but in depth, impact, and community.

“Today, The Good Shepards is more than a training company; it’s a philosophy, built on the belief that structured learning fosters freedom, obedience builds trust, and balanced dogs lead peaceful lives.”

“We’re continuing to develop an exclusive and intentional space for families who value a higher standard of care, training, and connection with their dogs. With two dedicated facilities and a growing team of passionate professionals, we’re expanding our services to support every stage of a dog’s development—from structured puppy training to specialized behavioral work, advanced day trains, and immersive pack experiences.”

“Our focus remains on quality over quantity. We’re not here to be the biggest—we’re here to be the most trusted. Each dog in our care is part of something bigger: a lifestyle rooted in calm leadership, thoughtful communication, and long-term wellbeing.”

THE GOOD SHEPARDS FOUNDATION

The Good Shepards Foundation is preparing to launch a rescue and rehabilitation initiative,

training abandoned dogs to serve as therapy animals in hospitals, schools, and crisis centers.

The goal isn’t just to save dogs—it’s to equip them with a purpose that transforms lives.

“We believe these dogs—once trained and given purpose—can bring hope to people around the world, offering comfort in schools, hospitals, and communities in need.”

To bring this vision to life, The Good Shepards Foundation is seeking funding and community support.

Every contribution pushes them closer to a future where dogs aren’t just rescued—they are empowered to heal the world around them.

“The future of The Good Shepards Foundation is about second chances—for dogs, and for the people they’re destined to help.” Visit the website for more information, https://thegoodshepards.info/

Ketchum Health, provides thorough eye exams and physicals to help uncover unseen challenges, promotes healthy habits, and gives children the foundation to excel.

EYE EXAMS AND PHYSICALS BOOST LEARNING

Parents and guardians know deeply that a child’s health and well-being are of vital importance if the child is to thrive in different social settings, whether it’s school, athletics, or elsewhere. As the rhythms of summer make way for the responsibilities of the new school year, one thing parents should keep in mind is how beneficial an eye exam and a physical can be for their child. According to optometrist Kristine Huang, OD, MPH, FAAO and physician assistant Prana Yenkosky, MMS, PA-C, from Marshall B. Ketchum University’s Ketchum Health in Anaheim Hills, examinations such as these are essential to establish guidelines for preventative care as well as to ensure that any health issues are identified as early as possible.

In the state of California, vision screenings are mandated in kindergarten, second, fifth, and eighth grades, and Dr. Huang points out that – as beneficial as these are—it is still extremely important for children to undergo a full eye exam, since screenings are limited in what they can detect. “At the most basic level, if you cannot see, you cannot learn,” says Dr. Huang, who is the Chief of Pediatrics and Vision Therapy Service at Ketchum Health’s University Eye Center.

Kristine Huang, OD, MPH,FAAO
Prana Yenkosky, MMS,PA-C

“This is why a comprehensive examination, especially early in the year, sets a child up for success, making them vision-ready so that their vision is not a barrier to their learning.”

Even children with essentially 20/20 vision stand to benefit, because it’s possible that a child may see clearly only with great effort, which can lead to headaches, fatigue, and even blurry vision. “We’re not just looking at their refractive error,” explains Dr. Huang. “We’re also looking at their eye focusing and their eye teaming skills, where deficiencies can lead to issues with reading or working on a computer.” Students who appear to be having problems with distraction may simply be avoiding the discomfort that comes as a result of what is happening with their vision. Also, since there are conditions where early identification leads to a better prognosis for treatment, optometrists can help prevent small issues from

going untreated throughout the year and becoming more difficult to address.

A full physical has many of the same benefits for a child entering the new school year, ensuring that they are well-positioned for optimum success from the perspective of their health. “It’s so important for children to get their annual physical exams,” says PA Yenkosky, who is the Clinic Director of Ketchum Health Medical Clinic. “We want to help parents make sure their kids are healthy, so that they can perform well in school. We can encourage healthy habits, like diet and exercise, which help their mind, body, and energy levels. All of these work together to make a well-rounded child.”

Sports physicals also promote wellness in a more specialized, focused way, as they are designed to confirm that the child is neurologically and physically fit to play sports. “Because sports can be strenuous,” explains PA Yenkosky,

CONTINUED >

“we are checking the muscular system, the neurological system, the cardiovascular system – anything that can make it clear that the child is healthy enough to be able to perform physical activities.” And just as with eye exams, a physical can alert the practitioner to issues before they become larger problems. Certain conditions in childhood, particularly concerning the heart, do not make themselves apparent until they are seriously tested by demanding physical activity. If given the opportunity, sometimes

children, in their enthusiasm, wish to continue playing no matter what, so a physical also serves the vital purpose of identifying any injuries that have not fully recovered.

Eye examinations, annual physicals, and sports physicals benefit the parents and guardians themselves. “It brings parents peace of mind,” says PA Prana Yenkosky. “ Their children are going to be healthy and safe.

Please visit https://ketchumhealth.org/ for more information.

“AT THE MOST BASIC LEVEL, IF YOU CANNOT SEE, YOU CANNOT LEARN. THIS IS WHY A COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION SETS A CHILD UP FOR SUCCESS, MAKING THEM VISION-READY SO THAT THEIR VISION IS NOT A BARRIER TO THEIR LEARNING,” SAYS DR. KRISTINE HUANG.

Compassionate Care for Your Pets

Aloha Veterinary Hospital provides advanced veterinary care, heartfelt compassion, and respect for the human-animal bond

“At Aloha Veterinary Hospital, we believe the life and love you share with your pet deserves care at the highest level—care that evolves with innovation.”

Dr. Marina Yamate and her husband, Ignacio Jimenez, are the owners of Aloha Veterinary Hospital in Brea, where Ignacio also serves as the administrator.

Together, their dedication to providing the best possible care and treatment to all of their feline and canine patients is second to none, as evidenced by droves of glowing reviews and loyal clientele.

“That’s why we’ve built a practice that embraces cutting-edge technology and modern medical advancements to deliver pioneering patient care. From minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries to on-site, board-certified specialists in diagnostics and beyond, we’re setting a new standard in veterinary medicine.”

Aloha is much more than just an animal medical facility- they’re committed to being a trusted cornerstone of their close-knit community.

“As a privately owned hospital, we’re not just your care team—we’re your neighbors. The dollars you spend with us stay right here in our community, supporting the local economy and helping the place we all love continue to thrive.”

Additionally, Dr. Marina and Ignacio believe in the importance of strengthening the relationship between children and their animals.

“There’s nothing quite like the bond between a child and their pet—it’s pure, unconditional love. That connection becomes a foundational part of their emotional growth and teaches empathy in such a natural way.”

Dr. Marina has many fond memories of her own special childhood pets.

“My dog, Cinnamon, was truly my childhood best friend,” she says. “Pets are loyal companions who offer comfort, joy, and a safe place to land when the world feels heavy. That friendship is something kids carry with them forever.”

Being a responsible pet owner also teaches meaningful life lessons, and it’s never too early to start.

“Caring for a pet nurtures responsibility, patience, and compassion. Even small tasks like feeding or brushing their pet teach consistency and accountability—traits that stick with them well into adulthood.”

The qualities and lessons kids develop while caring for their pets offer valuable benefits, including learning to take an active role in their training.

“When kids are involved in training, they learn safety, communication, and respect—for their pet and themselves. It builds trust and helps prevent accidents both at home and in public spaces.”

In fact, one of Dr. Marina’s earliest memories with her pet cat is one that has made a lasting impression on her life’s work.

“My first memory at a veterinary clinic was when I was five. My kitty Tasha was very ill, and I remember how the veterinarian gently knelt beside me, explaining everything with kindness and honesty. That moment stuck with me. It wasn’t just about treating Tasha—it was about supporting me and my family, too,” she recalls.

“That experience inspired me to become a veterinarian, and today I see it as my mission to support both my patients and the people who love them. The human-animal bond is at the heart of everything we do.”

“I have owned three businesses for 23 years, all revolving around kids.”

N Zone’s Multi-Sport Enrichment Program offers Soccer, Tennis, Flag Football, Basketball, and T-Ball/Baseball.

Kids sign up for a multi-sport program. At N Zone we rotate sports every few weeks to keep things fresh for the kids.

STRESS LESS DURING THIS ‘BACK-TO-SCHOOL’ SEASON

ENSURE YOUR CHILD FEELS CONFIDENT AND READY TO TACKLE A NEW SCHOOL YEAR BY EASING ANXIETIES, BUILDING ROUTINES, AND PLANNING AHEAD FOR A SMOOTH TRANSITION.

As summer winds down and the first day of school approaches, both children and parents often feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. Anxious feelings are normal during times of transition or change–and beginning a new school year is no exception.

Shifting from a slower summer schedule to a busier routine can be stressful and disruptive for the entire family, causing your child to be extra clingy or emotional.

“The first week of school offers a chance to learn about new things and pursue interests. Reinforce the fun and excitement of learning with your child!”

It's not uncommon for kids to cry more often, have trouble sleeping, complain of headaches or stomach aches, or simply seem more irritable.  While you can’t eliminate the stress entirely, here are some tips to help start the school year on a positive note:

• Be reassuring. Acknowledge your child’s feelings and encourage open conversations with you (and their teachers) about any worries.

• Be positive. Starting a new school year can be fun! Point out the excitement of reuniting with old friends and meeting new ones. The first week of school offers a chance to learn about new things and pursue interests. Reinforce the fun and excitement of learning with your child!

• Be prepared. Ease into the school year by starting routines a week or two early. Have your child choose their outfits, encourage earlier bedtimes and wakeups, and allow time to eat a healthy breakfast. Plan ahead for lunches and gather all school supplies. Schools typically distribute lists of what is needed for each grade level during the summer. Need help with supplies? Local school districts, nonprofits, and PTAs often offer assistance.

• Be safe. Ensure a safe commute to and from school byreviewing basic walking or biking safety. Consider a buddy system—arrange for your child to go with a neighbor. Walk, bike, or drive the route together before the first day to make them feel more comfortable. Touring the school beforehand or walking their schedule helps to familiarize them with their surroundings.

• Be thorough. If your child requires medication or special needs support, ensure all paperwork has been submitted and school staff is aware. Once plans are set, explain to your child how their needs will be managed during the school day (what time to report to the office to take their medication, foods to avoid in the cafeteria for allergy safety, etc.).

• Be connected. If your child gets nervous about new social situations, set up playdates before school starts. For older children and teens, encourage them to attend any summer events or back-to-school functions so they can socialize with their peers.

• Be alert. What should they do if you are late picking them up, or if no one is at the house when they get home? What should your child do if they feel they’re being bullied? Talk it through! Having a plan in place reduces stress and the tendency to panic.

STAY CONNECTED TO YOUR COMMUNITY

WHISKING UP CONFIDENCE

There’s something truly special about inviting your child into the kitchen—not just for the cookies or cupcakes, but for the confidence, creativity, and connection that come with it. Cooking with your children isn’t just a fun way to pass the time; it’s an opportunity to build lifelong skills and memories that stick.

Sure, teaching a young child how to crack an egg or measure flour can test your patience—but hang in there. With a little trial and a fair amount of error, they’ll start to develop the fine motor skills that allow them to prep a recipe all on their own one day. The best part? They’ll gain confidence along the way, one scoop, stir, and sprinkle at a time.

Why Cooking with Kids is More Than Just Making Meals

Cooking together also taps into something a little magical—memory. The smell of cookies baking or chili simmering on the stove can instantly transport us back to childhood. That’s not just nostalgia talking—science backs it up. Our sense of smell is closely tied to autobiographical memory, especially memories formed early in life. So those sweet, savory scents? They’re more powerful than you might think.

The key is to start simple. Let your toddler play with mixing bowls, spoons, and measuring cups. These little moments of pretend play actually help build the fine motor skills needed for real kitchen tasks. Begin with small jobs—scooping flour, flattening cookie dough with a rolling pin—and gradually add more steps as your child becomes more confident.

It won’t be perfect. The flour might fly, the sugar might spill, and the measurements might be slightly off—and that’s okay. Embrace the mess, stay patient, and focus on the fun. A dash of encouragement and a sprinkle of praise go a long way in keeping your little chef engaged and excited.

Over time, you’ll see the magic unfold: a child who’s not only learning how to cook but also growing more independent, capable, and proud of what they’ve created. And who knows? Maybe one day, they’ll pass those same recipes—and memories—on to their own kids.

ANIMAL Crackers

Ingredients:

• 1 cup and 2 tablespoons white flour

• 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

• 1/2 cup oatmeal

• 4 tablespoons honey

• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Steps:

• 4 tablespoons buttermilk

• 1/2 teaspoon almond extract

• 1/4 teaspoon salt

• 1/4 cup whole wheat flour

• 1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

• Optional: add 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg or cinnamon

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

2. Put the oatmeal in a blender or food processor and pulse for about a minute, until it’s reduced to a rough powder. Add the ground oatmeal to the whole wheat and 1/2 cup of the white flour, baking soda and salt to the bowl of an electric mixer affixed with a paddle attachment, and turn on to mix. Add butter and blend on medium speed until the butter has been incorporated and the mix looks a little like wet sand. Add the buttermilk, vanilla, honey and almond extract and blend. If the dough looks too wet to roll, add the remaining flour 1/4 cup at a time until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the blender.

3. Turn the dough out onto a piece of plastic wrap and flatten into a disc. Cover completely and chill in the fridge for at least one hour, up to overnight.

4. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 400 degrees and place dough on a lightly floured surface (using the remaining 2 tablespoons of flour). Roll out until 1/8 inch thick. Cut out with desired cookie cutters and bake for five to seven minutes, based on your preference. Five minutes will get you a softer cracker, while seven will get you a crisp cracker.

Enjoy!
