The photo is from my recent visit to see two of my grandkids in Oklahoma. Beginning our morning walk.

Children and pets bring tremendous joy to our families. Take this month to spoil your little ones, both two-legged and four-legged.

Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent our hardest work and greatest investment, and we are happy to highlight the best in this issue.

Who could forget our pets? This special kind of companionship can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love, and the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And who could ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends? The bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.  Summer will be ending, and the school bells will soon ring. Our thoughts will focus on school year routines, new clothes, school supplies, and more. There is still time this summer, to enjoy and make some memories that will live forever.

One of the commonalities between children and pets is they need us. Our care, attention, and knowledge will have a big impact on who they become. We hope this issue inspires you to enjoy your kids and pets a little extra this month.

Thank you for reading Yorba Linda Lifestyle and I hope to see you around town!

Anaheim Hills Pediatric Therapy—Creating Lifelong Connections for Children

THE SPECIAL BOND BETWEEN CHILDREN AND ANIMALS HELPS FAMILIES AT THIS INNOVATIVE, CHILD-FOCUSED FACILITY.

There’s something special about the bond between children and animals. At Anaheim Hills Pediatric Therapy, the leading center of its kind in Orange County, that connection is utilized to serve families with compassion, creativity, and fun in a child-focused environment.

“There’s an unspoken language between them,” explains Clinic Director Emily Frevert. “Children often feel safe and bonded to an animal when having that same feeling towards an adult can be challenging. Dogs specifically, but other animals, too, often express empathy and caring towards children. Dogs are the perfect definition of unconditional love. For many people, an animal is a person’s best friend and companion.”

A range of services are offered to children and their families at AHPT, including physical, occupational, and speech therapy.

To make children feel more comfortable while receiving services, a host of animals are onsite to engage with them. Dogs, cats, bunnies, chickens, and even a bearded dragon, named Eliza, have become familiar faces to families over the years.

“Physical therapy is needed when a child is behind on typical gross motor milestones such as sitting up, crawling, walking, etc.,” explains Emily. “Occupational therapy is needed when a child has difficulty with fine motor milestones such as finger or utensil feeding, dressing themselves, doesn’t like having their teeth/hair brushed, can’t regulate their sensory systems to participate in community or home activities, or is a picky eater. Speech therapy is needed when a child isn’t developing appropriate milestones for

understanding language when spoken to or expressing language to communicate needs.”

With seven years at her Anaheim Hills Pediatric Therapy Clinic and with 23 years of experience in pediatric therapy, Emily and her team’s expertise includes extensive knowledge of child development, sensory integration, learning disabilities, and physical disabilities, as well as an understanding of the importance of including the whole family into building upon a child’s success.

Emily’s personal experience growing up on a farm surrounded by animals, and later as a mother to children with special needs, also helped shape her vision.

“I’ve been to many clinics across several states as both a parent and therapist. My focus is always on creating an environment that helps not just the child, but on making the parents and siblings feel welcome, trusting, and confident that this is a place to grow the child and families’ needs,” she says.

Her well-rounded experience as a therapist and mother also enhances her ability to connect with patients in an authentic way, which includes adding animals to the mix.

“Often, children with autism have too much empathy, and they don’t know how to understand it. They can be overly concerned about what other children are doing, and that can greatly interfere with their social-emotional development. I see a strong relationship with animals when I meet a child who cares so incredibly much. Animals allow an avenue to place that feeling. It’s such a relief and reward for both child and animal to share in that experience.”

Despite navigating challenges throughout her journey as a mother, therapist, and entrepreneur, Emily couldn’t be happier with where Anaheim Hills Pediatric Therapy is headed.

“Our BUG Buddies non-profit is where I really see us growing. I homeschooled my children from kindergarten to 12th grade, and that inspired me to provide alternative education opportunities in our community. We have several types of classes, most specifically a preschool program for kids that might not be

accepted into community preschools due to behaviors, sensory issues, or complex medical issues,” she says.

“Our classes are facilitated by licensed Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Speech Therapists with a strong background in development and intervention, equipping them to provide an amazing experience for our BUG (Building an Understand of Growing) Buddies.”

“For many people, an animal is a person’s best friend and companion.”

-Anaheim Hills Pediatric Therapy Clinic Director Emily Frevert.

The future is decidedly bright for AHPT, the families they serve, and, of course, their resident animal crew—a critical piece of the pediatric therapy puzzle—and Emily wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Having animals in the clinic is never a dull experience. There’s always a child who bonds immediately, and always a parent who surprises themselves by touching,

petting, or enjoying being around the animal when normally they do not. There’s never a shortage of animals that need love, and at the same time, never a shortage of children that need that same affection. Bringing them together only makes sense, and it’s so rewarding when you facilitate a relationship that otherwise wouldn’t have been created.” www.ahpediatric-pt-ot.com

HONEY DOG TRAINING OWNER JESSICA GRAHAM PROVIDES PRIVATE, IN-HOME DOG TRAINING SESSIONS FOR HER CLIENTS.

BUILDING A BOND WITH YOUR DOG

A dog’s purpose is to love and be loved in return.

Over the past three years, Honey Dog Training founder and Lead Trainer Jessica Graham has provided the greater Orange County area with private, in-home dog training services designed to help families and their pets learn how to better understand and respect each other.  https:// www.honeydogtraining.com/

“Many times, my clients specifically ask for dog training regarding babies and children. I teach them dog psychology to understand how to best advocate not only for dogs but for their children, too,” she explains. “It’s important to teach both parties how to respect one another, especially in terms of safety,” she says.

Jessica firmly believes that proper dog training improves the relationship between dogs and their families by establishing a clear line of communication, trust, and socialization, boosting confidence for all parties.

Jessica also offers a line of innovative leashes that provide additional flexibility. “If you’re an on-the-go, busy parent, my leashes offer you the

ability to not only go hands-free on walks but also the ability to be able to tether onto your stroller or a tree while enjoying a picnic with your kiddos.”

“Our hands-free leash allows you to maintain complete control over your child’s movements. It allows you to engage in activities like jogging, pushing a stroller, or even carrying groceries, all while keeping your little one safely by your side, a feature that so many of my momma clients enjoy,” she says.

“It’s important to view my leash tutorial so you know exactly how to put it on correctly and effectively. I would also advise doing a single session to learn how to walk with your dog on a loose leash, otherwise, this leash is especially great for dogs who already walk on a loose leash beside you.”

In addition to educating families and their furry family members of all breeds and sizes, Jessica considers herself to be a lifelong learner when it comes to studying canines.

“I believe what helps me grow in knowledge and advance my business is the amount of education I continue to partake in, whether it be through workshops, seminars, or shadowing programs—I am always a student of the dog,” she says.  “I also value doing workshops specifically on personal and business development in order to improve my skills.”

Inspired by her experience with special needs children, as well as her devotion to her own dog, Jax, who also has special needs, Jessica’s mission has come full circle through her business.

“I know for certain that my love for child behavior and development has really sparked my love of dogs and behavior modification. I also owe so much to my dog, who has taught me

how to think outside of your typical sit, stay, and come commands, really meeting his needs both physically and mentally in order to be a well-balanced, fulfilled dog.”

The sky is the limit for Honey Dog Training, and Jessica has her sights set on continued expansion.

“My vision for the next year is to continue growing my community. I just recently started a podcast called Canid Conversations, available on both Apple and Spotify, specifically geared toward helping dog owners that are struggling with their dogs.”  “I want the community to know that training dogs is not just about training their dog—more importantly, it’s about training the owner on how to coexist with their dog, so that everyone is fulfilled and happy,” she says.

“Dogs and children should live life together with a mutual understanding of trust and respect, creating harmony within their relationship and the family as a whole.” www.honeydogtraining.com

Lifting Up the Littlest Angels

It’s often said that love is the best medicine.

Since 1965, a special group of women in the Yorba Linda area has worked tirelessly to support pediatric patients at CHOC—Children’s Health of Orange County—through The Littlest Angel Guild, one of seven guilds currently serving the CHOC Foundation.

This non-profit organization raises funds and community awareness to ensure that all children treated at CHOC—over 275,000 annually—receive exceptional medical care, regardless of their family’s ability to pay.

With the support of The Littlest Angel Guild’s various fundraisers, patients, and their families can focus on what truly matters most—getting well and spending priceless quality time with one another.

To date, The Littlest Angel Guild has raised nearly $7 million dollars in support of CHOC’s mission—“To nurture, advance, and protect the well-being of children.”

Headed by Volunteer Leaders Sally Stacey, Lori Stenovich, and their team of Angels, several members of The Littlest Angel Guild are second generation, and two are daughters of a founding member.

LOCAL LIMELIGHT | LOCAL SERVICES 26

Fundraising efforts include the annual Pursenally Yours Luncheon, an annual spring auction event where attendees can bid on purses and an array of other exciting items, as well as fun monthly events ranging from art and cooking classes to educational tours and shopping excursions.

Other opportunities to support the work of The Littlest Angel Guild, we will be joining the other Guilds for The Holiday Tree Brunch on December 3rd at the Westin South Coast Plaza.

A major focus of the Guild is using their funds to support the mental health crisis.

One way they seek to provide comforting care to children at CHOC is through the Resident Dog and Pet Therapy Program. Two specially-trained, fulltime facility dogs, Lois and Odessa, provide lots of love, care, and wags to all they meet and greet.

Loisis blonde, with one of the most compassionate faces you will ever see. Odessa is spunky, with a ravenhued coat, and once had her nails painted purple by a patient. They are resident service dogs and badge-carrying CHOC staff members whose work is supported solely through philanthropy.

Although Lois and Odessa are undeniably adorable, the benefits provided by their presence go far beyond their fur.

Unlike pet therapy animals brought to the hospital by volunteers to provide cheer, resident service dogs are highly trained to be a vital part of therapeutic treatment. These dogs, who live with their CHOC handlers, help patients achieve their medical goals one wag at a time.

A wealth of research has proven the positive effects of placing highly trained animals in a hospital setting.

Resident dogs bring many positive impacts to a hospital environment, including reducing stress, enhancing calm and security, easing the perception of pain, decreasing fear, improving mood, building trust, increasing the hormone that produces feelings of happiness, and decreasing the hormone that is produced during times of stress.

Lois and Odessa each have their own unique areas of expertise.

Lois is treatment and therapy wrapped in fur with a wagging tail. She is tasked with helping patients and their families cope with many situations, her duties include providing comfort at the time of diagnosis and play-acting ‘dog-tor’ as a therapeutic means to help patients understand the challenges they face.

Odessa is specifically assigned to the Cherese Mari Laulhere Mental Health Inpatient Center, meeting patients where they are as they struggle with their mental health and building trust through trauma-informed care.

“When the new resident dog and pet therapy program began, it was a ‘match made in heaven’ for their dog-loving members. Two of our Guild presidents have worked with the Guide Dogs for the Blind organization, and many members have volunteered with various animal rescues,” says Patty Randall, the CHOC Foundation’s director of community involvement.

“We know from various reports that if mental health conditions are caught early, outcomes can be improved. This crisis impacts everyone, regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic status. This Littlest Angel Guild wants to be part of the solution,” she adds.

“Our volunteers lend their time—about 11,000 hours per year—talents, business expertise, and giving hearts to help support CHOC’s efforts to give their patients comfort, peace, and a path on how to cope with mental illness,” Randall adds.

Like so many patient and family-care services provided by CHOC, the animal-assisted therapy program is 100% supported by philanthropy. Community kindness is key to sustaining and growing this crucial resource.

“The Littlest Angel Guild is always looking for new members to join us in our efforts to make a difference in a child’s life,” says Randall.

Ghetto Rescue FFoundation Saves Lives

“A dog is for life, not just for special occasions!” This mantra is one taken seriously by the dedicated dog rescuers at Ghetto Rescue FFoundation located in Anaheim Hills.

“Our rescue is unique because we’re a group of police officers, fire department personnel, community members, veterinarians, and business owners,” says GRFF Founder Tami Baumann. ghettorescue.org

GRFF is often contacted to assist law enforcement with dire situations.

“Most of the dogs we rescue are literally at death’s door, whether that’s on a ‘red list’ (facing euthanasia) at a crowded shelter or plucked from a deplorable situation.”

GRFF specializes in rescuing pets and placing them with loving fosters until the perfect permanent placement can be found through an extensive adoption process.

It takes a village to keep GRFF’s wheels in motion.

“When we rescue or pull a dog from a shelter, we must have approved fosters in place,” explains Tami. “Rescue groups that are foster-based can only save lives if people are willing to take a pet into their home and care for them.”

For those willing to serve as fosters, GRFF covers food and medical costs. “If people would just consider fostering, we could save so many more lives!”

GRFF’s current foster network is far-reaching, stretching across California to Arizona.

Another common GRFF saying is to “stay focused on the dog.”

“We believe in assisting people with keeping their pets out of the shelter, sometimes by simply providing pet food to a struggling family,” says Tami. “Any assistance we provide also comes with an agreement to spay and neuter.”

An important part of GRFF’s mission is creating compassionate, lifelong animal advocates— starting with children.

“Pets are an important part of kids’ lives, not just because of the responsibility, but also the way they affect the rest of their lives. Most people can recall a time in their childhood when a dog or other pet gave them genuine love.  “Many kids are able to develop a special bond and find comfort with their beloved pet.” A pet can be a child’s first best friend or to children with emotional issues and/or bullying issues,” says Tami.

LEARN MORE: Ghetto Rescue FFoundation is a 501c3 nonprofit founded by local police in 2012. Headed by Tami Baumann, this group of extraordinary individuals saves abused and neglected animals from the unimaginable and places them in safe, loving homes. This foster-based rescue is always looking for approved fosters to save more lives.

OC Animal Care—For the Love of Animals

The compassionate staff at OC Animal Care provides essential care for local animals in need.

"Katy Cares" Teach kids ownership responsibility. 30

Pets are more than just an addition to your household— they’re part of the family.

When one of these innocent creatures finds themselves in a less-than-ideal situation, their fate is often left in limbo.

OC Animal Care, one of the largest municipal shelters in Southern California, is a way station for animals in need, offering everything from pet adoptions and licensing to community outreach, educational resources, field operations, and emergency response services.

The compassionate staff works diligently to uphold their mission, which is providing refuge and care for animals, fostering the human-animal bond, and promoting safety in the community.

In 2022, OC Animal Care took in 14,687 animals and responded to 48,811 calls concerning stray, sick, or injured animals, animal cruelty, neglect, or potentially dangerous/vicious dogs, barking dogs, and rabies control.

The OC Animal Care family is always there to help animals in need, but they also work to educate the community.

One way the OC Animal Care team connects with the community is through their “Katy Cares” educational outreach program, designed for students in Preschool through 6th grade.

The “Katy Cares” program includes a story about adoption and responsibility, an interactive game, a corresponding activity packet with a book giveaway, and a “Meet and Greet” with one of the shelter’s furry friends. This gives children the opportunity to interact with an animal and further deepen their understanding of responsible pet ownership—it’s a win-win!

“By working together, we can create a more informed and compassionate community that understands and respects the needs of our furry companions.”

Another important part of their mission is doing whatever they can to keep pets with their families.

“We are committed to providing resources to keep our furry friends and their owners together. The Family Furst Drive-Thru Pet Food Pantry is a monthly event that provides essential pet food and supplies to families in need. In 2022, we distributed over 85 tons of donated pet food to help feed over 9,000 pets.”

OC Animal Care encourages anyone interested in helping animals in need to think about fostering, a critical effort that saved over 2,100 pets in 2022 alone.

“For families who are not quite ready for a forever pet, consider fostering with OC Animal Care! Volunteer foster caretakers give pets, like kittens and puppies, a safe and nurturing environment, helping them grow and develop before they find their forever homes.”

“Animals often come to us sick, underaged, or injured, and in need of a safe space to heal and grow, time, and TLC. Around-the-clock care for the animals who need it the most is made possible thanks to our incredible community members who choose to foster.”

OC Animal Care’s network of fosters has a very special job—one that requires time, patience, and, of course, a love of animals.

“We have dedicated individuals who bottle feed newborn kittens, take in shelter pets recovering from broken bones, surgeries that require longer treatment, rechecks with our partner veterinarians, and specialized care. Many of our foster volunteers promote the pets they’re fostering to find adopters for them prior to returning to the shelter!”

There’s something for everyone at OC Animal Care!  From volunteer opportunities to resources, prospective pet owners, current parents of fur babies, and animal lovers alike can all find the perfect way to get involved! To stay up to date on adoption promotions, new programs, and services, the community can visit ocpetinfo.com  or call (714) 935-6848 for more information.

“OC Animal Care believes that responsible pet ownership is a collective effort. We actively collaborate with local schools, community partners, and other organizations to promote responsible pet ownership through workshops, community events, and outreach campaigns.”

Girl Scouts Leading the Way

Sonia Sotomayor, Venus & Serena Williams, Lisa Ling, Taylor Swift, Condoleezza Rice, Katie Couric, and Vera Wang are just a few famous Girl Scout alums.

Research shows that 89% of parents say their girl is happier because of Girl Scouts and 80% of female entrepreneurs were Girl Scouts.

Local Girl Scouts of Orange County are doing big things—and they’re just getting started.

Since Juliette Gordon Low established Girl Scouts USA in 1912 in Savannah, Georgia, the term “girl power” has never been the same.

Trailblazing girls all across America come together to learn, grow, and help shape a brighter future through the Girl Scouts organization.

“We are 25,000 strong – nearly 15,000 girls and 10,000 volunteers and adult members bring girls’ dreams to life and work together to build a better world. Through programs reaching girls in every zip code in Orange County, Girl Scouts of all backgrounds and abilities can be unapologetically themselves as they discover their strengths and rise to meet new challenges—whether they climb to the top of a tree or the top of their class, lace up their boots for a hike or advocate for climate justice, or make their first best friends. Backed by trusted adult volunteers, mentors, and thousands of alums, Girl Scouts lead the way as they find their voices and take action to affect the issues most important to them.”

Throughout history, many famous faces have been a part of the Girls Scouts family.

“Girl Scouts of Orange County is dedicated to building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. There is no better place than Girl Scouts for a girl to develop her leadership skills and achieve awards.”

Four OC Girl Scouts, Annika Christy, Gabrielle DeCuir, Madison Ems, and Cassandra Herter, all high school juniors and Yorba Linda residents, are Girl Scout Gold Award recipients from Troop 2812, Girl Scouts of Orange County, Yorba Linda West.

The Girl Scout Gold Award—the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve—was presented in May at the Yorba Linda Community Center Ceremony. Also in attendance were inspiring dignitaries such as California Surgeon General Dr. Diana Ramos, Yorba Linda Mayor Pro Tem Tara Campbell, and Dr. Lisa Chong.

Only about 6% of all Girl Scouts earn this award, which is achieved by creating sustainable community projects.

Let’s take a look at each of their amazing projects. www.girlscoutsoc.org

Annika Christy

Annika believes in balancing academic stress with creativity at a young age to prevent burnout in adolescence.

“Mediums of Hope,” a 6-week summer art program at the Boys and Girls Club of Placentia-Yorba Linda-Brea, focused on children’s mental health.

Increasingly complex art lessons challenged 30 children with simple creative tasks, teaching them to prioritize and organize in a timely manner.

Annika is President of Lending Paws, a school-based service organization, an Honors Thespian, and a Valencia High School Distinguished Scholar.

Annika plans on using Girl Scout skills like leadership, perseverance, and tenacity to pursue biomedical technology at a four-year university.

Gabrielle DeCuir

“Hoops & Coders” addresses the underrepresentation of women in computer science and basketball, particularly women of color.

Her program won a $5,000 grant from The Dragon Kim Foundation Fellowship and a $5,000 grant from the Kwanza Jones & Jose E. Feliciano Supercharged Initiative. The funds purchased Chromebooks that helped 19 girls earn their “Think Like a Programmer” patch.

Gabrielle has partnered with Higher Ground Youth & Family Services and Boys & Girls Club to host camps. Gabrielle’s team developed a curriculum to teach campers app coding and basketball skills.

Upon graduation, Gabrielle plans to study computer science and genetic biology.

Madison Ems

Madison’s program addressed the fear of public speaking among high school students.

The creation of a public speaking club, “The Mustang Gavel Club,” provided a supportive environment to develop communication skills and boost confidence.

Building effective communication, teamwork, adaptability, and leadership skills required the creation of a comprehensive charter, recruiting a board, and adding new members.

The club attracted 74 new members by hosting events, showcasing members’ skills, and emphasizing the benefits of public speaking.

Madison is active in the YLHS Band, Speech/Debate program, and Parent-Teacher-Student Association.

Madison hopes to study Economics in college and one day become a lawyer.

Cassandra Herter

Cassandra helped abandoned animals find loving homes through “Rescue for Abandoned Animals.”

Her team rescued 78 animals, primarily from Mexico. They created a website, flyers, and social media posts to advocate the needs of abandoned dogs and cats, as well as the importance of adopting instead of purchasing pets.   Additionally, they created forms for adoption, fostering, and donating to the rescue.

Cassandra attended adoption events, photographed the animals, and provided information to potential adopters. The website, social media, and rescue organization will continue beyond her involvement.

Cassandra is an award-winning, published photographer who has been a Girl Scout since Kindergarten.

Backyard Chickens

Everything you need to get started on your backyard coop.

Chickens have become increasingly popular as pets in both suburban and urban areas during the last 20 years. Backyard chickens may seem to be an unsuspecting animal to keep as a pet but the tried and true egg producers are back in fashion as food costs are soaring and families are looking for more food independence in light of recent supply chain shortages. There’s a lot to like about raising chickens in your backyard. Surprisingly, chickens are relatively low maintenance. And bonus – unlike dogs, they don’t need to be bathed or groomed, and they don’t shed on your clothes or require training. Oh and bonus – they make you breakfast.

The eggs from backyard chickens are the best—tastier and fresher than any store-bought eggs. Much of the day, the birds entertain themselves, picking at grass, worms, beetles, and all of the good things that go into making those delicious farm eggs. Plus, with their keen eye for insect pests, chickens make for great gardening companions.

Chickens can provide family companionship, fun, entertainment, sustainable fresh food, and plenty of poop that gardeners prize as a natural fertilizer/composting material. Could backyard chickens be the perfect pet/producer to add to your home?

Things To Consider Before Getting Chickens:

First, check local town ordinances to ensure that keeping chickens is even allowed in your neighborhood or if there is a limit to the number of chickens you can keep at once.

Make sure you have the space for a henhouse or a full-size chicken coop. It has to hold a feeder and water containers, a roosting area, and a nest box for every three hens. A proper coop should be large enough that you can stand in it to gather eggs and shovel manure comfortably, but a simple hen house can be quite a bit smaller. Plus, any housing must be sturdy enough to keep your chickens safe from all the predators out there. Gorgeous coops are aplenty on places like Pinterest if you’re building your own, but many pre-made options are available through various farm supply stores as well.

Chickens need food and water daily. Feed is about $20 per 50-pound bag, but prices vary depending on your location and the quality of the feed. How long a bag lasts depends on the number of chickens you have.

Hens will lay eggs through Spring and Summer and into the Fall, as long as they have 12 to 14 hours of daylight. Expect to collect eggs daily, or even twice a day.

Backyard Chicken Q&A:

HOW MANY CHICKENS SHOULD I KEEP?

Chickens are sociable creatures, so plan to keep three to six birds at least. With this amount, you’ll always have a steady supply of eggs, since an adult hen lays about two eggs every three days, on average. Local ordinances also dictate how many chickens one household can keep.

HOW MUCH DOES KEEPING CHICKENS COST?

All of this costs money, of course. The materials to build and furnish a coop and a 20 x 5-foot run—including wood, fencing, and hardware—are going to set you back at least $300. If you can’t do this work yourself, you’ll also be buying skilled labor.

Overall, expect to spend between $500 and $700 when getting started depending on the size of your flock, coop and run. For prefabricated coops, expect to pay $600 or more.

WHAT KIND OF SHELTER DO THEY NEED?

Chickens need to have an enclosed coop that provides adequate space, protection from the elements and predators, and good ventilation. A modified shed, barn, or stable with an outdoor run is a good option for a coop. The outdoor run should be fully enclosed if you have predators like hawks or owls nearby. Ideally, coops are slightly elevated off the ground to prevent flooding and have windows on each side, enough nest boxes to allow several chickens to nest simultaneously, outlets for lighting, fans if they’re needed, air inlets or ventilation holes on the roof, and a concrete floor treated with a pet-safe waterproof coating that allows for easy cleaning and drainage.

Want to go the fancy route?

Search Pinterest for “chicken coop building plans” if you’re building your own or consider going the luxury route with a gorgeous custom-built coop from a company like CutestCoops.com .

WHEN DO CHICKENS START LAYING EGGS?

Most hens will start laying eggs when they’re about 18 to 20 weeks old, although it may take more time for them to reach their peak output. Often, the first eggs are laid irregularly or are smaller or oddly shaped when compared with a typical egg. This is nothing to worry about! Once a cycle is established, most hens will lay one egg per day.
