The photo is my dad as he was serving in World War II. Have you ever wondered, “Do fathers matter? What differences do I make in my home as a dad?” Let’s start with the simple answer — the importance of a father is tremendous! Fathers make countless differences in their home and family. However, how much impact you decide to make as a dad is entirely up to you!
A father’s gifts of quality time, life-giving words, and positive actions have a long-lasting impact on his children.
As I reflect on fatherhood this month, here are just a few of the ways dads can build up their homes:
• A father’s strength can be powerful
• A dad’s words can be fueling and inspirational
• Hugs from a dad can be deeply comforting
• A dad’s smile can instill joy and confidence
• Time with a dad can be fun and productive
• A dad’s guidance can be life-changing and foundational
• A father’s correction can be life-saving and life-giving
• Adventures with a dad can be exciting and memorable
“Not every man is a father, but every man who cares for a child or young adult loves and guides them, protects and teaches them is the best kind of father one could ever ask for.”
Let your father or a father figure in your life know how much he matters to you. And if you are a dad, let us be the first to say - thank you. You are invaluable to the people who know and need you as well as the community around you.
Thank you for reading City Lifestyle and I hope to see you around town.
Happy Father’s Day!

Father’s Day—many celebrate it, but how did the holiday start? Although the United States officially observes the occasion every third Sunday in June, there’s more history behind the “Day of Dads” than meets the eye.
There are two accounts of the holiday’s origins. One version claims the very first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Washington state.
After listening to a special Mother’s Day sermon, Sonora Smart Dodd had an idea— why not take a day to celebrate equally deserving fathers, too?
She decided to begin a new family tradition. After her mother’s death, Sonora’s father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran, raised her and her five siblings with love and care.
Sonora wasn’t content to let the celebration end at her front door. She petitioned her local government for a year. Finally, the state of Washington rang in the first official Father’s Day celebration on June 19.
Another account of the first Father’s Day took place in Fairmont, West Virginia. After a tragic mining explosion claimed the lives of 361 men, Grace Golden Clayton asked her Methodist minister about holding a special service to honor the fathers in their community.
He obliged, and the town’s first Father’s Day celebration was held on July 5, 1908.
Father’s Day gained national attention thanks to some high-powered politicians. One such name was former U.S. Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan, a staunch supporter of the holiday efforts.
In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended recognizing the day as a national holiday, yet no official action was taken, despite “Silent Cal’s” suggestion.
In 1966, Lyndon B. Johnson issued an executive order designating the third Sunday in June. Still, it wasn’t until 1972, under President Richard Nixon, that Father’s Day was officially deemed a national holiday.
There are approximately 1.5 billion dads on the planet, with 66.3 million of those fathers residing in the United States. Father figures don’t look the same in every family, of course, as many stepfathers, grandfathers, brothers, uncles, and friends are honored on this special day.
Out of the 100 million Father’s Day cards purchased annually in America, about 50% are actually bought for dads.
ARTICLE BY HEATHER WHITSITTBeing passionate about what you do is necessary for building a successful business—a concept John and Dyna Samz have taken to heart.
The longtime Yorba Linda residents and duo behind D & J Custom Crafts began their business journey 23 years ago.
With decades of experience in their respective industries (construction and painting), they decided to combine their passion for creating into something new. The result was a one-of-akind wood lawn decoration company.
“John made a wood item and asked me to paint it,” recalls Dyna. “We were looking for something to do in our spare time, and eventually, in retirement. As the years passed, we grew more than we could have ever imagined.”
Years later, D & J Custom Crafts remains a gem in the North Orange County community, and the feeling is certainly mutual.
“When a customer returns with praise from a previous purchase, seeing a child’s eyes continually light up, or the priceless look on a customer’s face when they see one of our displays for the first time—that’s what inspires us,” she says.
Customers of all ages flock to the shop, where they’re bound to find that perfect piece. “We celebrate all seasons and special occasions,” says Dyna.
“All of our pieces are custom-made, affordable, and painted with care. We do special orders at the customer’s request, with special attention to detail,” she says. “No job is too big or too small, and we can always say that it was ‘Made in America.’”
Never been by? John and Dyna invite you to stop in and experience the magic they make. “We love what we do, and we want to share it with our community!” dandjcustomcrafts.com

Situated on the grounds of Black Gold Golf Club, Derricks Grille has something for everyone.
ARTICLE BY HEATHER WHITSITT
The best way to learn a business is from the ground up. The four “fathers” of Derricks Grille, located on the sprawling grounds of Black Gold Golf Club in Yorba Linda, each got their start in the restaurant industry many moons ago—but their love of cooking and entertaining remains stronger than ever.
Executive Chef Ron Armendariz was introduced to the culinary lifestyle at age 14 when he worked as a busboy. He’s the father of five sons and a daughter. All five of his sons followed in his footsteps into the food industry.
As a young child, Sous Chef Ricky Vivas learned the ropes from his father, a chef at Tony Roma’s. Ricky loves creating different recipes and is always hungry for feedback to improve his skills.
Tony Frausto, Food and Beverage Manager at Derricks, has over 20 years of experience in the food industry. The father of two holds a high standard for exemplary customer service and providing memorable experiences for all guests. He always enjoys peoples’ smiles and happiness with the food and service he represents. Tony lost his father at a young age. His admiration for his mother’s tireless work ethic and passion for working with people continues to inspire his daily endeavors.
Rounding out the team is Marco Diaz, the Weddings & Special Events Banquet Captain. Marco is committed to executing every event to perfection and finds joy in bringing clients’ visions to life.
“Our team was created and brought together because we are the best at what we do, service, cooking, experience, we have the qualities, heart, and passion for the job we do every day,” says Tony.
In addition to being led by a powerhouse team, Derricks Grille offers diners a truly unique experience—the flavorful, diverse dishes they offer are not your typical golf course fare.
“The items that are selected for the menu are created uniquely by Chef Ron and I,” says Chef Ricky. “We cater our ideas towards our demographic and stay consistent with current trends.”

An enticing array of breakfast and lunch items, as well as a full-service bar, are served inside Black Gold Golf Club’s beautiful 20,000-square-foot clubhouse, offering expansive views of Yorba Linda and Orange County.
Patrons can also enjoy their meal al fresco on the covered patio overlooking the picturesque 18th green waterfall, lake, and rolling vistas.
Breakfast options range from fruit bowls, breakfast burritos, and sandwiches to classics like pancakes, eggs, avocado toast, and the “Rock” French toast, topped with Nutella, bananas, fresh strawberries, whipped cream, and cornflakes.
Take your pick from omelets with veggies, chorizo, green chiles, and carnitas, or indulge in the “Hey Ricky!” eggs benedict, a homemade sope filled with refried beans, los primos chorizo, poached egg, hollandaise, and pico de gallo.
For lunch, whet your appetite with a scrumptious starter like roasted Brussels sprouts, Angus beef sliders, a spicy tuna roll, or a delicious bowl of Captain Hodge’s Clam Chowder.
A variety of salads, sandwiches, and burgers make for a delectable main course, and specialty dishes like fish tacos, spicy pork, and an orange chicken bowl are sure to satisfy every craving.
The clubhouse also features banquet facilities for 200-plus guests and boasts panoramic views of the golf course.
According to Marco, “On the banquet side, every event is handled differently because we want each event to feel unique in its own way.”
“Banquet setups, menu options, and even guiding clients to help them experience their vision solely because we care is what sets our business apart from the competition,” he explains.
Tony echoes the sentiment that a key to Derricks Grille’s success is its dedication to prioritizing the customer experience.
“Derricks is different because we genuinely care about every one of our customers,” says Tony. “We’re not a chain or a large corporation—we want each guest to feel like they are a part of what we have and what we can provide.”
As for the future, the team at Derricks Grille hopes to keep flourishing in the community they hold so dear. “We plan on continuing to grow and stamping our brand everywhere as the best-kept secret of Yorba Linda,” says Tony.
“We welcome everyone to experience Derricks Grille and Black Gold Golf Club. Whether you are planning a date, special event, wedding, or golf tournament, our services are unmatched. See you soon!”
Patrons can also enjoy their meal al fresco on the covered patio overlooking the picturesque 18th green waterfall, lake, and rolling vistas.
Every meaningful journey starts somewhere. Joshua Ramirez’s flourishing career as a trust litigator began when he was a young, inexperienced court attorney, just starting out and not even sure of where to stand.
“Fast forward to today, and I’ve opened my own firm,” he says, “and we regularly handle multi-million-dollar trust litigation and elder abuse trials.”
California Estate Planning Services is an award-winning boutique law firm focused on Estate Planning, Trust Litigation, Conservatorships, Probate, and Elder Law.
“Being a boutique firm allows me to know each of my clients and their situation to provide individual guidance throughout the entire matter,” says Joshua. Advising families and protecting their assets is a responsibility Joshua and his team take very seriously.
“I only practice in trust litigation, estate planning, and matters surrounding trusts. I spend time with each individual client to analyze their legal needs and prepare a sound legal strategy that results in a win. I have only lost one trial out of the last 100 or so cases.”
Joshua’s services aren’t limited to trust and estate planning, however.
“I am also in the unique position to advise my clients on tax consequences and planning. During law school, I quickly realized that I didn’t want to just know the law—I wanted to go above and beyond the law, so I obtained my Tax LLM. With this knowledge, I can save my clients time and money by providing both legal and tax advice.”
Joshua’s success is the result of hard work, dedication, and years of unwavering support from his wife, Marissa. “She is my rock, and her support has been instrumental in my success,” he says.
“Balancing work and family life hasn’t always been easy, but I've learned to make time for both. My family's love and encouragement are a driving force that helps me achieve my goals.”
Pursuing the litigation field was not a decision Joshua took lightly.
“My greatest concern about becoming a litigator was questioning how I could balance maintaining my faith and passion for helping people while earning a living and winning trials,” he recalls.
“That concern was, as I now realize, unfounded. By focusing my practice on solving clients’ problems with compassion and honesty, everything else falls into place.”
“As I reflect on my journey so far, I am proud of the obstacles I've overcome, the successes I've achieved, and the relationships I've built along the way. I’m excited for what the future holds and look forward to continuing to grow both personally and professionally,” he says.

Nothing says a night to remember like arriving at a special event in high style. Classique Worldwide Transportation’s clients always travel in comfortable decadence, making an elegant entrance for any occasion.
Classique is a world-class ground transportation company in Orange County, with a fleet that features the finest sedans, SUVs, limousines, Sprinters, Mini-Coaches, and Motor Coaches to accommodate any group size.
President and CEO Kevin J. Illingworth started the company 33 years ago, when, frustrated by a no-show limousine experience with his friends, he decided to build a dependable business that meets and exceeds client expectations.
“At first, I was mad,” he recalls of the incident that set his entrepreneurial wheels in motion.
“I thought, how hard could it be to show up and drive people around for the night? Within a week, I bought my first limousine. I started out booking runs with friends who also started referring others to me. Before I knew it, I had purchased two more limousines and was busy every weekend, providing transportation for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, and evenings out.”
The business was booming until the tragic events of September 11, 2001, brought things to a screeching halt.
“No one was going out—people were afraid of crowds, and I had to reinvent my business,” he remembers. “I decided to focus on corporate business. I joined my local Chamber of Commerce, I gave my card out to everyone I met, cold called, and sent mass mailings.”
“I knew if I could get my foot in the door, I could turn them into clients with
my focus on customer service, great follow-through, honoring special requests, and always being accessible,” says Kevin.
His hard work was worth the effort, and before he knew it, Classique was back to being busier than ever, with a star-studded client roster that includes Morgan Stanley, Volcom, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Viacom, Los Angeles Clippers, MTV, VH1, and several other production companies.
But Kevin wasn’t stopping there.
“I also believe in growing the livery business, having served as President of the Greater California Livery Association for nine years and still serving as the Western Regional Director of the National Livery Association,” he says, noting that, “I work with our association to lobby in D.C. every year to ensure those that follow me in the limousine industry have a path of success.”
“Because of the struggles I faced growing up, it has made my adulthood that much easier to solve these issues. It has been one of my core values with my management team to ask them to bring me the solution to the problem, rather than just present the problem.”
Although carving a path to success certainly hasn’t been easy, the love and understanding from his family have helped Kevin continue pushing forward and grow his business to what it is today.
“I truly believe that without my family and their patience for my crazy work hours, all of this would not have been possible,” says Kevin.
“Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week for the past 33 years is sometimes hard to believe. It would be remiss of me if I did not mention my wife Cindy Illingworth, my son, Devan Illingworth, and my daughter, Cameron Illingworth. They make me tick! Without a purpose, I would not be who I am today.”
Despite a seemingly nonstop work schedule, Kevin is also an avid sports fan—an interest he has been able to intertwine with Classique.
“My love of sports has again been great for my business!” says Kevin. “We do work for the Los Angeles Clippers, MLS soccer, and the Los Angeles Chargers. Perks include getting to go see some games.”
In addition to offering clients their choice of luxury transportation, Classique leaves no stone unturned, and no detail overlooked throughout the process.
“Our Event Specialist can assist in planning weddings, sightseeing tours, group transportation, corporate road shows, funerals, and large events. We provide the one point of contact for all your travel needs, anywhere in the world,” says Kevin.
“We focus on the customer by offering 24-hour reservation and dispatch service. We pride ourselves on ‘going the extra mile’ by honoring
Devan & Cameron at MLS Event“We pride ourselves on ‘going the extra mile,’ honoring special requests, and offering extra touches that separate us from competitors.”From elegance to convenience.
special requests and offering those extra touches that separate us from our competition.”
Extensive training for new and existing staff, advanced technology, and consistent upgrades to their fleet all work to enhance the customer experience.
“Clients can book online, chauffeurs can quickly update with our app-based system, and GPS tracking allows us to always know exactly where your vehicle is,” he says.
Kevin wants the community to know that who he is and what’s most important to him can be summed up in three words—friends, family, and motivation.
“This business reflects all I hold important in life. I respect and value every client, and I take great pride in providing the very best service possible,” he says.
“Family means everything to me. I run my business like they are all my family. Just recently, I brought my son in to start driving, and it’s been nice to have him around. As for friends, this business has opened so many doors for me and allowed me to meet so many great people. When it comes to motivation—I came from nothing, and I want to reinforce that there is always hope with hard work!”

Steve Gogatz, the owner of Light Up My Holiday and Innovative Light Designs, has been passionate about outdoor lighting since he was 12 years old, after experiencing Disneyland's "It's a Small World" ride. His fascination with lighting has led him to brighten over 5,000 customers' homes and businesses with dazzling holiday light displays and permanent outdoor landscape lighting.
For the first five years, Steve's projects were free, as he pursued his hobby while still attending middle and high school. Many of his early clients were in Placentia, where he went to Kramer and Valencia. Later, during his college years, Steve's hobby turned into a business, and people began seeking his elaborate designs to bring joy and excitement to their communities. His holiday lighting installations often won local decorating contests, and it was fulfilling for Steve to see his designs recognized and his customers delighted with his work.
Today, Light Up My Holiday and Innovative Light Designs are among the largest and most
sought-after lighting services in Orange County, thanks to Steve's commitment to detail, quality, creativity, and vision. The company's lighting installations have gained fame on major TV networks' nightly news programs. The most famous holiday lighting project is Setwarts Vineyard in Yorba Linda. Search 5792 Grandview is YouTube. The addition of permanent outdoor landscape lighting services has earned them several national awards for their work. In 2021, Innovative Light Designs won the Top Award in a national lighting contest for Best Outdoor Landscape Lighting on a residential Estate, and in 2022, the company won another Top Award for the Best Commercial Project lighting design for the Daou Vineyards in Paso Robles.
According to Steve, what sets his business apart from others is its commitment to providing a unique, innovative design and installation for its clients, with elegant yet subtle lighting that creates ambiance. Their lighting products are top-of-the-line, American-made, and come with a twenty-year warranty. The fixtures are wholly integrated LED lights that don't use traditional light bulbs, and with a large selection of 85 different styles of lighting fixtures, Steve's team can offer a variety of choices and application options to provide the best design and installation for their customers.
In addition to their quality lighting products, Steve's team provides follow-up maintenance checkups every six months to ensure that their lighting installations are in good working order. This is something that clients have praised, as they say, other lighting companies install products and never return. Steve's team also offers

a free night-time demonstration, setting up 75 lights as a mock-up to showcase the possibilities of what they can do for a property's ambiance.
All of the lighting projects showcased on their website were installed "as-is" or "retrofit," meaning that customers can have the same lighting effects on their own homes without needing to undergo any construction. Between dealing with the profound loss of his father and feeling unfulfilled in his career, Benjamin Allen was searching for answers.
It was during this transitional time that Benjamin went for his first “float”—an experience known as sensory isolation that entails floating in a water chamber for an array of physical, mental, and spiritual health benefits.
Benjamin noticed a change after his first float. The unique experience, which is designed to provide positive results like homeostasis, stress relief, improved athletic performance, help with addiction issues, removal of toxins, and more, awakened in him a feeling he couldn’t ignore.
“I enjoyed it immensely from the start, and the more I did it, the more it seemed to coincide with a feeling towards my career that I had never really dealt with,” he recalls.
“The drive my father had given me was running on fumes—something had changed. Floating offers the experience of pure contemplation, with no distractions and no excuses.”
Benjamin delved into some serious soul-searching to pinpoint the change.
“Was it the loss of my father, something about this new habit I had picked up, or was it something completely unrelated? I had to wait about 6 months for the answer to come, and it came from Awaken Float Lounge.”
He had gotten into the habit of chatting with Eric, the owner of Awaken Float Lounge at the time, before and after his float sessions—a practice he feels compounded the therapeutic nature of his floats.
As luck would have it, Eric was interested in selling the business, and Benjamin decided to take the plunge.
“It felt like a reason to plot an entirely new course,” says Benjamin.
“We developed an agreement, and within 3 months of our initial conversation, he handed me the keys. That was over a year ago now and I could not be happier with the new course. I’d like to think Dad would be happy as well.”
Now in its seventh year of operation, Awaken Float Lounge is a premier, state-of-the-art floating facility in Orange County.
The facility features NSF-certified and UL Listed Isolation Flotation Chambers, which are approved for commercial use to provide a floatation experience with unparalleled relaxation and stress reduction.
Before each use, the chambers are sanitized by a patented disinfection filtration system certified to provide a deep clean without the use of chemicals.
“We are a business that functions more like a club,” explains Benjamin. “Customers and members alike participate in the experience of the business with me. For example, one of our members swears by a different kind of ear plug—we now provide those for everyone. Another member suggested serving tea after float sessions—so now we do! Because I started out as a customer, I feel that connection with customers now that I am the owner,” he says. “I feel like the customers own the business, too, and I act accordingly.”
According to Benjamin, the concept of floating is a highly innovative way to tap into the human psyche.
“The experience itself is unlike any other that humans have come up with. We are not disrupting an established industry or challenging established businesses,” he says. “We are experimenting with human consciousness in a manner that has been around for only about 50 years, becoming popular in the last 20. We are on a new frontier!”
Benjamin encourages those interested in floating to give it a try. “I don’t pretend that this experience is
