I don’t know about you, but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life richer and more beautiful. This month brings an abundance of joy-bright blue skies, a rainbow of flowers, and the Celebration of Mothers.

Our wives, mothers, daughters, and business associates are some of the most influential women in our lives.

And of course, with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms. But it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends, and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.

While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role - connecting with and championing the best of the best regarding Yorba Linda and the surrounding city’s women.

So to all women, we wish to recognize and thank you for all you do.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

They say if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. This couldn’t ring more true for Cheryl Slinkard Bertuzzi, co-owner of Pedego Electric Bikes in Yorba Linda.

“As your local small business owner, we perform all maintenance and service in our dealership, with support as needed from the manufacturer, who’s been in the eBike business for 15 years,” says Cheryl.

“We take our time educating customers on each model’s features to find the perfect ride for YOU. We offer test rides on all bikes on our showroom floor and rentals are available for select models,” she says, noting plans for safety classes soon.

While Cheryl is clearly passionate about her business, which includes a successful career as the COO of a software company, her first love is undeniably her family.

Cheryl is a proud, dedicated mom who draws daily inspiration from her two sons—Jodi Valencia, also a co-owner and store manager of Pedego Yorba Linda, and Ryan Ross, an Operations Lead for a large public bike share network.

“Ryan has always been an avid cyclist enthusiast,” says Cheryl. “He’s ridden his bike from the O.C. to Portland, San Diego to Cabo, and Kansas City to New Orleans. While working as the manager for Kerr Bikes, he enlisted Jodi to come work for him in the summers,” she explains.

“Jodi moved to Portland also, and eventually became a store manager at Pedego Portland—which is where our journey begins! He fell in love with the brand and its mission.”

From there, Cheryl and her husband, Chris Bertuzzi, hopped onboard. “It becomes our goal to bring this premium quality brand of eBikes, service, and support to our hometown of Yorba Linda,” she recalls.

In addition to providing the community with stellar products and one-of-a-kind customer service, the family is committed to giving back as much as possible. Since opening

the store, they supported a number of charitable events and nonprofit organizations, including donating an eBike for the Amber Craig Foundation’s “Walk with Hope” event last March 9th that in total raised over $130K for Suicide Prevention Awareness.

They also support the Yorba Linda Sunrise Rotary Club, the Yorba Linda Chamber of Commerce, and more.

In their first year of operation, their Yorba Linda location sold more than 70 top-of-the-line, class 2 and 3 electric bikes, and performed over 150 services on Pedego-branded bikes.

It’s safe to say that the road ahead looks very bright for Cheryl and Pedego Yorba Linda, with no signs of stopping anytime soon.

“By investing in our community, providing alternate transportation and recreation options for folks who want to go further and see more, we can bring people closer together than ever before,” she says.

Be You Candles, a lovely local shop owned and operated by creative candle-maker Shemeka Wright, offers a bevy of scents designed to delight and rejuvenate your senses—and your home.

“Our incredible fragrant collections offer the perfect way to bring a soft and soothing feel to any room,” notes Shemeka.

A candle enthusiast for as long as she can remember, Shemeka made her passion official when she decided to try her hand at making her own fragrant wax creations.

What began as making candles for herself, followed by family and friends, grew into something greater. Soon, Shemeka’s kitchen turned into a candle laboratory, the place where she mixed, tested, and experimented with different colors, wicks, jars, and fragrances.

Her goal was to create a product that truly reflected her own unique, vibrant personality.

When burned properly, Be You Candles last up to 60 hours.

DANCE AN EXPRESSIVE ART FORM

Dance is a highly expressive art form that provides an array of benefits, from physical to emotional, social, and beyond.

In Orange County, Dance Precisions has a reputation as a premier training studio where dancers can pursue their passion and sharpen their skills across a variety of genres.

The state-of-the-art, 20,000-square-foot studio offers dancers a sense of safety and belonging, in addition to training by caring, dedicated instructors.

“We are a very diverse dance studio and teach many different styles of dance. We want to be good at all different styles, and not just focus on a single style,” says Dance Precisions owner Edith Montoya

Located in Anaheim Hills, Dance Precisions is open to young dancers from 2 to 18 years old across the North Orange County community.

Numerous class options include tap, ballet, jazz, contemporary, lyrical, hip hop, musical theater, and acro dance classes.

“We have over 200 classes per week for dancers to choose from with four different programs,” explains Edith

The first is a new branding of our littlest dancers’ program, called Little Dancin’ Shoes, featuring classes for dancers 5 and under.

These classes cater to students interested in Ballet, combination Jazz/Tap, Hip Hop, and a Basic Movement class for 2-year-olds. These classes are vibrant and fun, with the dancers learning real dance steps to exciting and fun music.  The kids 5 and under can’t wait to get into the class each week.

The second program is the Academy Program, which features all styles of dance for 6 years old and up. This program offers a performing group with an opportunity to perform in shows in the local community.

The third program is our Premiere Competition team, which is a bridge team for dancers interested in gaining initial competition experience.

The fourth program is our nationally renowned Competition Company. This company boasts all styles of dance for ages 4 and up, competing locally and nationally.

Many dancers in the Competition Company have gone on to college dance programs or work professionally in the entertainment industry.

All four of these programs perform in two shows per year, with the Performing Group additionally doing community performances and the Premiere and Company dancers dancing year-round in various competitions.

Creating and developing such a robust dance business is no easy feat—but according to Edith, it’s an endeavor well worth the effort.

“I have been in business for 35 years, and I firmly believe that I have positively impacted the

lives of thousands of children,” she says. “When I first started the studio, I was on a mission to create a place for kids to have a second home— one where they could learn how to navigate the increasingly difficult world and learn to make good choices at an early age. We tell people that we use dance to help their children get there.”

Edith considers the role her studio plays in the lives of her students to be a supportive, pivotal partnership with dancers’ parents.

“I tell the parents that Dance Precisions wants to partner with them to help their kids become the best version of themselves, shaping them to become whatever they want to do in the future.”

Before opening the studio, Edith worked in a very different profession. As a successful salesperson in the printing industry, she felt unfulfilled by her career accomplishments.

“I never felt a passion for it,” she admits. “After opening Dance Precisions, I knew every night when I went to bed, the why behind what I was doing. It gave me a mission in life, and I was able to use that passion to help kids become great adults and great dancers.”

Transforming a client’s vision into a picture-perfect event is nothing short of an art form—and at Loft 84, this level of creativity and flawless execution is a regular occurrence.

Owner and CEO Shelby Lynne Worthington-Loomis fondly recalls the road to realizing her true calling.

“I have been an entrepreneur for thirty years,” she says. “I started with many small businesses, including hot dog carts, real estate, and bartending. I ended up finding myself most happy in the field of hospitality.”

Project 21 Summer Intensive

Project 21 is a world-renowned, audition-based dance studio in Yorba Linda. Typically, the studio only accepts a handful of new students each year.

Despite usually being closed to the public, studio owner Molly Long wanted to offer all dancers a special opportunity to train at Project 21 for one week during the summer. The first Summer Intensive launched in 2022 and was a massive success!

This year, the 2023 Project 21 Summer Intensive is back for a highly anticipated second run.

Here, dancers attend convention style classes in a studio setting for a more personalized experience.

Project 21’s Summer Intensive is open to intermediate/advanced dancers who are interested in refining and advancing their technique in various genres of dance.

Class styles ranging from Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary, Modern, Ballroom, Tap, and more push dancers to their fullest potential and leave them feeling inspired and motivated.

“Moms Day Off” will be celebrating its third anniversary in 2023, but it really began 8 years ago in my home, says Stephanie Thorman. In 2015, I dreamed up a day called “Moms Day Off”—a party with no kids or spouses allowed. With two kids under 5, all I really wanted was a break!

I invited over 25 of my friends, hired a bartender and a caterer, bought festive pool floats, and made matching shirts and hats. It was amazing! Moms Day Off has since become an annual tradition in my home.

Four years ago, I decided to develop a similar business—but for other women and their circle of friends. I worked tirelessly on developing themed party packages and planned to launch MDO—the party brand— back in 2020. However, the pandemic quickly halted my plans. While the timing was unfortunate, it ended up being exactly what moms needed most at the time. It has since developed into a wildly fun, successful small business across Southern California. I’ve also launched a fun “mom gear” product line that’s been featured in two local retail stores.

We’ve hosted multiple days of service for moms to be able to give back to their communities, and Moms Day Off now has a national yearly holiday, September 12th.

In-home party-planning packages are now available for moms to celebrate and host their own MDOs. I'm on a mission to create a space for moms to take time for themselves, enjoy the community of women around them, and revel in their amazing accomplishments.

We are stronger together—and we deserve to be celebrated!

Complete a Jigsaw Puzzle

Find a puzzle with an image you know your mom will love (or make a custom one using a photo of the two of you) and put it together over wine and snacks. You’ll be amazed at how much chatting you can get done while puzzling.

Go to a play or a musical — lots of towns even host outdoor theater events.
