The photo is of my grandson and his two dogs in Oklahoma. As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for school days, sports routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community—kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder are refreshing. In this issue, please read the article about Madison Taylor Baez. She is an 11-year-old Yorba Linda resident who is an amazing singer, actress, and entertainer. We are so proud of her, her accomplishments, and the accomplishments to come. Please check out the feature article on Pet Supplies Plus, the products, and services as well as the outstanding knowledgeable team members to make your visit enjoyable. Learn about Anaheim Hills Pet Clinic and the services available including digital x-rays, surgery, acupuncture, daycare, grooming, and boarding just to mention a few. Please read a fantastic article by Ashley Hudson, LMFT about the mental health benefits of having pets. We have some serious pet lovers in our cities. The bond between humans and animals is very special. We hope you can enjoy some quality time with your kids and pets before the hustle of the new school year and all that comes with it is here. Thank you for reading City Lifestyle and I hope to see you around town!

The “all hands on deck” mentality of the Webb family is part of their recipe for success. “We are one whole team,” says Roger. “Every team member has been trained to work in all aspects of the store. Our focus as a business is providing not only a safe environment for our team and neighbors—but one that makes them happy. Our shared mission is all about the well-being of pets.” Most of the team has plenty of experience in the pet care industry, not to mention the menagerie of personal pets the Webb family has owned and cared for over the years.

“We’ve had a Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Japanese Akita, two Yorkshire Terriers, a Lhasa Apso, a few birds, too many reptiles, a Leopard Tortoise for over 20 years, and one Pomeranian that is still barking to this day!” recalls Roger. “Pets can bring your family together to care for an animal just like you would care for one another—because pets are family.” That valuable firsthand experience has helped the family build their business while expertly guiding friends and neighbors to choose the perfect products for their pets. “One of our goals is to be recognized by neighbors as the ‘first choice for supplying the highest quality products, services, and value with honesty, compassion, and knowledge, as well as a mutual concern for the health and well-being of their animals,” says Roger. “We do things right the first time to ensure our neighbors get what they need as efficiently as possible. We make sure everyone is offered help with their products out the door, and keep our shelves organized so our customers can easily find what they’re looking for,” he says. Becoming a cornerstone of the community is about more than just taking orders and stocking the shelves with reliable products, however.

The Pet Supplies Plus team offers a memorable, full-service customer experience that’s unique from what their competitors have to offer. “When you enter Pet Supplies Plus, you’ll be greeted warmly by our wonderful staff, who are ready to answer any of your questions, give product explanations, and help you locate anything you need,” says Roger. “There’s a holiday-themed photo booth for you and your furball to take a picture that can always be cherished,” he says. “Children are welcome to gaze at the aquariums full of colorful, exotic fish, hold snakes, hairless guinea pigs, or cute, tiny hamsters that will roll around in the palm of your hand. We wanted to offer the community something that they needed—not just a basic pet store, but one that provides a real experience.” The in-store grooming salon goes above and beyond the basic “spa services” you’d find elsewhere, with a variety of packages designed to take your pet pampering to the next level of luxury.

Another fan favorite is the store’s convenient self-service pet wash that includes everything you need to get your pet squeaky clean quickly— clean-up included. The Pet Supplies Plus team is as invested in what goes on inside their store as they are in external efforts to engage and support the community they are proud to call home, from throwing weekly pet adoption events to participating in local happenings and philanthropic events throughout the year. “Not only are we a one-stop-shop for all things ‘pet,’ but we are truly happy to be serving Yorba Linda and its neighboring communities.” petsuppliesplus.com/

MADISON TAYLOR BAEZ LIVING HER DREAM Madison’s AGT performance brings down the house and the golden confetti ARTICLE BY HEATHER WHITSITT

At 11 years old, multitalented musical prodigy Madison Taylor Baez has already achieved feats that most people only dream of doing—and she’s just getting started. From playing “Young Selena Quintanilla” on Netflix’s Selena: The Series and starring in Showtime's new series “Let The Right One In”, premiering in October, to making judges’ jaws drop with her powerhouse vocals on America’s Got Talent, this Yorba Linda native’s future is paved with promise. Although Madison is having the time of her (young) life doing what she loves, it’s who she loves that provides her with all the inspiration she needs to reach for the stars. Her father, Chris Baez, has been battling stage four colon cancer for the last nine years. Madison honed her vocal talent while singing to her father throughout his numerous surgeries, chemotherapy treatments, and recovery periods. Chris credits Madison’s magical voice—and their unbreakable bond—with giving him the strength to keep fighting the disease and for feeling as strong as he does today. He now manages Madison’s burgeoning career, a task he firmly believes is responsible for his continued progress—and one that certainly keeps him busy. Madison has appeared in numerous national TV commercials, performed the National Anthem for a slew of sold-out stadiums and arenas across California, and appeared on Kids Say the Darndest Things, which garnered Madison a standing ovation for her performance of Beyoncé’s song “Listen.” An appearance on FOX’s new show Game of Talents once again brought Madison’s amazing abilities to light as she wowed viewers with a spine-tingling, soulful take on “Ain’t No Sunshine.” Her role in Selena: The Series also earned her rave reviews. In addition to being the only cast member to use her own vocals, Madison sang beautifully in both English and Spanish. Fate intervened again recently when Madison, a superfan of America’s Got Talent, was plucked out of the show’s audience after captivating the crowd—and judges—with her rendition of “Amazing Grace.” Her second, on-stage performance that followed earned her the Golden Buzzer—an automatic advancement to the next round. Of her life-changing audition, Madison recalls, "It really felt like I was living my dream—I was filled with excitement! I've been

H OW TO | A RTS + CU LTU RE

watching the show ever since I can remember. It's always been my lifelong dream, and it finally came true.” It’s safe to say the only thing that rivals Madison’s tremendous talent is her selfless spirit. What does she plan to do if she takes home the show’s $1 million grand prize? To help her dad, of course. She also hopes to motivate others to pursue their passions. “I'm most excited to share my voice with everyone that needs it,” she says. “My main goal has always been to inspire other kids to follow their dreams, so I'm really excited to be able to do that now." Be sure to tune in for the 17th season of America’s Got Talent, airing August 10th, to see Yorba Linda’s very own shining star take the stage—and the world—by storm. “I’m most excited to share my voice with everyone that needs it,” she says. “My main goal has always been to inspire other kids to follow their dreams, so I’m really excited to be able to do that now.” -Singer/actress Madison Taylor Baez, a contestant on America’s Got Talent and Yorba Linda, native.

Dr. Kathleen Johnson

If you’ve been lucky enough to have a special pet in your life, you know how important it is to keep them happy and healthy for as long as possible. Animals instinctively give us so much love, loyalty, and companionship, the least we can do in return is to ensure they get top-notch treatment when they need it most. At Anaheim Hills Pet Clinic, that’s exactly what you can expect— and just what the dedicated staff is committed to delivering. “It is our goal to provide the very best veterinary care to your pets as our patients,” says Dr. Johnson, co-owner and veterinarian at Anaheim Hills Pet Clinic. This highly-rated animal care facility certainly takes its motto, “Your pet. Our passion,” to heart. “Our philosophy is to care for all pets as if they were our own. We are a team of animal lovers here to give our patients the attention and care they deserve,” she says. Along with fellow owner/veterinarian Dr. Andrea Bogan, practice managers Becky Reed and Ashley DeBano, as well as the entire staff, the Anaheim Hills team makes good on that promise, as evidenced by the long-term, positive patient relationships they have built across the city. Times Orange County voted the clinic “Best Veterinarian” and “Favorite Boarding, Grooming, and Daycare” due to their stellar customer service and longstanding solid reputation in the community. The lengthy list of services offered by Anaheim Hills Pet Clinic includes acupuncture, chiropractic care, cold laser therapy, digital X-rays, pet health certificates, surgeries, ultrasounds, CT scans, endoscopy, laparoscopy, senior wellness package, and much more. A full spectrum of services allows the caring staff to quickly assess the situation and act quickly. Paired with hard work, the clinic is successful, in part, due to their understanding that just like humans, urgent pet needs can occur at any time—and concern for our furry friends doesn’t adhere to a certain timeframe. To meet increasing demand, the clinic is open on Saturdays and Sundays, accepts new patients, and walk-ins, offer overnight hospitalizations and extends its services to “pocket pets” and exotic animals. In addition to their intrinsic love of animals, the Anaheim Hills Pet Clinic staff has been even more motivated to provide exceptional care since the onset of the pandemic. “We would love to thank our loyal clients who supported us and treated us with kindness during the pandemic,” she says. “Especially those who understood how demanding this field became during the last two years. While we are still recovering from long, stress-filled days, we hope you believe that there is nothing more important to us than your pet’s health, and for you, as pet parents, to feel comfortable and trusting of our veterinarians and support staff.” The clinic’s commitment to animal care and customer service doesn’t stop with your pet—they hope to help enrich the lives of their patients by making pet owners more knowledgeable as well.

They understand that the more prepared you are, the better off your pet will be when problems arise, as well as the long-term benefits of consistent, proper care and maintenance for helping your pet live a long, healthy life. “We want each pet parent to feel comfortable when they walk through our doors,” says Dr. Johnson. “We want to educate our clients, especially on preventative medicine.” The Anaheim Hills Pet Clinic team also believes in giving back to the community that has embraced them in challenging times. They take pride in supporting local charities, referring other small businesses who also provide exceptional pet services, and supporting local groups who share their passion for educating people on how to be great, responsible pet parents. “We are also here for you! PETS BRING KIDS HAPPINESS & HOPE THE MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS OF HAVING PETS

O UR TOWN | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S

You’ve heard the saying: “A dog is a man’s best friend.” Pets have long been a part of people’s lives as companions. It’s no secret the benefits pets can provide for families and individuals living on their own. Having pets, especially dogs and cats, creates companionship which can relieve feelings of loneliness and enhance connection. Coming home after a long day to meet your dog who is wagging its tail, excited to see you, can instantly perk up your mood and wipe your worries away. Typically, the relationship between a pet and child is one of the first relationships a child navigates outside of their parents and siblings. The child begins to understand

THE MENTAL HE ALTH BENEFITS

what it means to have purpose and responsibility. Setting up a routine of daily tasks such as feeding, walking, and washing your pet gives your child the opportunity to learn how to take care of something. Learning what it entails to care for your pet installs the confidence to take care of yourself. As a teen therapist, I work with teenagers who struggle with anxiety and grief. I often ask teenagers, “What are things in your life that give you joy and calmness?” Half of the teenagers talk about how their dog (or other pet) gives them happiness and hope. When I dig a little deeper, I usually find that kids, especially teens, struggle with feeling judged and accepted by their peers or family. It can be really isolating and lonely when you feel misunderstood by your friends or judged by loved ones. It’s a tricky time for teenagers who are figuring out who they are. They often feel the need to be accepted no matter where they are in their adolescent journey. Feeling your dog’s unconditional love can be a perfect remedy for a young person’s stressful day. A pet simply laying his or her head on your lap or just sitting next to you, brings love and warmth. A child is reminded that their pet does not care what they look like or what they have done during the day. A pet can demonstrate love and acceptance which might be exactly what a child is looking for. There are several emotional and relational benefits that pets provide for kids. Having a dog can be an especially great motivator to get kids outside and exercise. The benefits of getting outdoors, moving your body, and being mindful of your surroundings are great for reducing stress and anxiety. Kids can watch the positive impact that exercising has on their pets and be reminded of what great caregivers they are. Owning pets, especially dogs, is a great way for kids to learn and navigate companionship, help ease worries, and increase their feelings of acceptance and security. ashleyhudsontherapy.com/
