Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence in herself, but at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out their greatness. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed while sometimes competing with each other is so beautiful and rewarding. Encouraging and empowering the people in our own life can be something that comes naturally to do, but the impact of intentionally looking for ways to build up those in our greater community is so powerful. We all want to be seen, and when we share encouragement and consideration to those around us, barriers break down and warmth follows. I personally have two women that inspire me every day, my daughters. My eldest is a single mother who is a teacher, the mayor of her city, a community volunteer, a grant writer, active in her church, and makes sure to get my grandson to the 4 sports he is active in. My other daughter is serving our country and protecting all of us in the US army. She is working on attaining her degree to become a doctor. She is very active in her church volunteering 2-3 nights a week working with children. In this month’s issue, we are highlighting women that have made their mark on our communities. These women share thoughts on motherhood, as well as the impact their mothers have had on their lives. We are also recognizing women entreprenuers who have shared their journey to building their businesses. In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. I also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to them to thank them for their impact on your life. You won’t regret it.

This thrill-seeking business is owned and operated by Robbie and Tanya Spencer, a husband-and-wife team with over 60 years of shared experience in the sport of skydiving. The dynamic duo, who each holds personal world records, has taken more than 30 thousand

combined skydives. Robbie and Tanya have also competed at the national level, with Robbie earning both national and world championship medals. It’s clear that the skydiving Spencers take their sport pretty seriously—and with good reason. The Skydive West Coast approach to business was initially inspired by friends and mentors, Dave and Angela Hickling. The Hicklings own and operate a skydiving business in Nottingham, England, where Tanya got her start in the sport. Tanya credits the couple with shaping their professional trajectory. “Dave is the Chief Instructor and Angela is the Chief Pilot of British Parachute Schools. Their shared passion for aviation and skydiving, as well as their ability to work together as a couple, have really shaped our lives and set us in a direction that has become our lives,” she says. Both Robbie and Tanya also credit their success and ambition to their supportive families. They were both fortunate to be raised by strong mothers who instilled core lessons and values in them, shaping who they would later become. “Our mothers taught us to love one another, go after your dreams, and to be kind to strangers because you never know—they may just become your friends,” recalls Tanya. “And when it comes to business, greed kills, so never take more than you need.” The concept of giving more than you take certainly wasn’t lost on the Skydive West Coast team, who thrive on giving back to their community through various philanthropic endeavors. One of their charitable partners includes Carol’s Kitchen, a local organization that works to feed those in need. Skydive West Coast also works to support its community by not only attracting new visitors to the area but also by encouraging those customers to patronize nearby establishments. “A skydiving business is an asset to any community it is located in or near. These people not only come to skydive— they also frequent the local restaurants and hotels, too. When you think about it, even our small business has brought in over 10,000 people in one year to Banning,” says Tanya.

I ask my own mom how she weathered emotional storms; I quiz experienced mothers at church for tips, and, most of all, I depend on the relationships I’ve built with friends who are also navigating the ups and downs of parenting. Whether it’s laughing over our crazy schedules or clutching hands in prayer when we’re near the end of our ropes, I’m so grateful I don’t have to be a mom alone.

Carolina Aguilera The Tailor’s Place In celebration of Mother’s Day, I would like to express our gratitude to two wonderful women. First, I want to thank my grandmother, Rosa—shown in the center of the photo—who taught my mother, Blanca, to sew. My mother would then use what she learned from my grandmother to make many of my dresses when I was growing up. Later, my mom would teach me how to design my own dresses when I was 12. Thanks to those skills, and the legacy that was passed down to me, The Tailor’s Place was created as a result

My life changed instantly when my husband passed away in 1973, leaving me to raise a toddler and run a business on my own. I later realized that thinking I was “on my own” was where I was wrong— thanks to my mom. She was there for me night and day, whether I asked for help or not. After all these years, I still thank the universe for blessing me with my mom—a treasure forever!

Growing up, my mother and I were constantly volunteering through National Charity League. To this day, we continue to volunteer through Meals on Wheels, our church, St. Martin’s, and Love Yorba Linda. For better or worse, our childhood experiences often shape who we will become later in life, leaving a lasting imprint on our hearts and minds. Local visual artist Shilpa, who owns and operates Shilpi’s World Academy of Art, has precious early memories of drawing that will forever be connected to her mother. “Parents are considered our first teachers, and that is very true in my case!” she says. “As a very young child, as far as my memory can take me, my mom taught me how to draw. She was an artist herself, who believed in [aspiring to] perfection.” From there, Shilpa’s mother helped to hone her daughter’s apparent talents, enrolling Shilpa in summer drawing and painting classes to further her artistic development and allowing her to explore her passion. “In retrospect, her appreciation and encouragement towards an artistic persuasion has brought me to where I am today!” Shilpa recalls. In addition to having her unconditional love and support, Shilpa remembers being inspired by her mother’s skills, as well as her focus, precision, and commitment to her craft. “She believed that anything you do in life should be done to perfection. Her needlepoint embroidery was very exquisite work—it was done with such a fineness. Her influence was very strong on my impressionable mind. She always made an effort to teach me things with diligence, from arts and crafts to knitting and cooking,” says Shilpa. Today, the life lessons Shilpa learned as a child has translated into entrepreneurship. She has run Shilpi’s World Academy of Art for the past decade, a venture that flourished from a small home business into a full-time educational institution. Shilpa, a formally educated artist and graduate of rigorous BFA and MFA programs, plans and implements the curriculum herself, thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of each student in her academy. Through Shilpa’s platform, instruction is provided in the areas of shading, drawing, and exploring different mediums of coloring and painting. Small class sizes provide a more personalized setting. “I believe in the basic idea that without drawing, there is no painting. Accordingly, I work to ensure that students build confidence through grasping the basics of drawing and rendering,” she says. Following her beloved mother’s philosophy, Shilpa is dedicated to growing her students’ abilities through finely tuned instruction. “I work hard to ensure that my knowledge and practice passes from myself to my students,” she says. shilpisworld.com

I have been asked throughout my life how my mother impacted me. There are many incredible ways she has influenced my life, but one has always stood out. She modeled for me the importance of helping people in times of suffering. My mother is a nurse and has always had a special interest in working with the elderly community. I remember as a little girl, noticing that my mother kept angel figurines, neatly lined up in her curio. When I asked her about them, she responded by telling me that they were gifts from her patients. Her patients lived miles away from each other, though all saw my mother as their angel. The figurine was a gift of gratitude from each kind soul. I was amazed, “Wow, all these people think my mom is an angel.” Completely inspired by my mother, I wanted to help people and “be an angel” to others just like her. I went on to become a therapist, specializing in teenagers who struggle with self-esteem, confidence, self-image, relationships, and anxiety. On a weekly basis, I speak with teenagers who struggle with adjusting to life’s challenges. One of the most common questions I ask teenagers is “What do you need from your parents, specifically from your mom?” Mothers play a crucial role in children’s lives. When asked the question, “What do you need from your mother?” I get responses such as unconditional love, comfort and safety, trust, acceptance and understanding, and genuine interest in their lives. There was an overarching theme in all these responses that was hard to overlook. These teenagers wanted to love and be loved by their mothers. In times of hardship

or success, they wanted to turn to their mothers and receive comfort and aid. They want to connect and access their mothers as a refuge, a solid foundation to stand on. Essentially, mothers and teenagers want the same thing. Mothers want to support and help their teenagers be as happy as possible, and teenagers want their mothers to love and comfort them in their journeys. We often take for granted how significant the role a mother plays in our lives, especially during the teen years. There is a sacrificial piece to being a mother that needs to be honored. When helping others in their suffering, you do it out of the goodness of your heart and with a passion to help people in need. Mothers sacrifice their time, energy, space, needs, and goals to be there for their children. You are your child’s angel. In that moment as a little girl, I saw my mother as a true angel (to me and to others). She encompasses the qualities that I wanted to be as a mother, woman, and therapist. I am thankful for mothers and especially my own who inspired me to be of service to others in times of pain and struggle. I thrive in helping close the emotional and relational gap between teenagers and their mothers. If it wasn’t for the little girl who was enamored with her mother’s passion for nursing people back to health, I wouldn’t be the mother, nor have the successful and fulfilling career that I have today.
