This month, we celebrate women, acknowledging that we should uplift all types of women year-round.
I want to draw your attention to some notable women you perhaps haven't heard of.
Sister Rosetta Tharpe, born in Arkansas in 1915, was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She inspired Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Keith Richards, and many other musicians. Before rock and roll went mainstream, Sister Rosetta Tharpe was shredding on her guitar.
Hatshepsut was an iconic female pharaoh of Egypt. She fought for her right to the throne and ordered to be portrayed as a male pharaoh. Her successors made extensive efforts to erase her from history before her sarcophagus was discovered in 1903.
Pauli Murray was the first African American to receive a Doctor of Juridical Science from Yale University in 1965. She was a key activist in the civil rights movement. Later in her life, she was the first African American woman to be ordained as an Episcopal priest.
Grace Lee Boggs fought for women's rights, labor rights, civil rights, and environmental justice. She worked alongside Malcolm X and Angela Davis. She was an impactful voice for social change and wrote several books. She was a champion of grassroots organizing for social change.
Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman elected to Congress and the first African American to run for a major party nomination for president.

Jennifer describes her team as phenomenal, “They keep me going all day, every day, and we’re just like one giant family.”
— JENNIFER HAYMES
Jennifer Haymes began her salon in 2019 at a suite in Sola Salon in Kennesaw. A year after opening, her business expanded into a salon and spa. In 2022, she opened the salon’s Woodstock location off Highway 92.
As you walk in, you’ll notice the upbeat music playing at a moderate volume. Ladies are getting shampooed and dyed, and a cosmetologist is honing her craft on a wig. Colorful bottles line the shampoo stations, and the chairs are comfy. Fresh flowers are on the front desk, adding to the nourishing vibe. The waiting areas offer a sense of tranquility and coziness.
This is a place for prime self-care. Whether you need a simple trim, color, or style for a special event, Jéa Salon has the experts who’ll help you. They have a nurse practitioner on staff who specializes in procedures like non-invasive body contouring.
The space is also great for people new to salon and spa services. Their estheticians communicate every part of the
process, whether you are getting a facial, waxing, or extensions. Jennifer describes her team as phenomenal: “They keep me going all day, every day, and we’re just like one giant family.” A happy and healthy team always leads to a satisfying customer experience.
At the back of the salon, you’ll find the spa tucked away in a private area. Essential oils are being diffused, creating a gentle aroma.
Jéa Salon has expanded to 2400 square feet and now offers additional treatments. Offering a range of scalp exfoliating treatments, their new head spa is a viral Japanese treatment that incorporates water therapy and a detoxifying cleanse. These treatments refresh and relax the scalp.
Jéa Salon is IBE® (Invisible Bead Extensions) certified and offers popular services like facials, the head spa, and extensions.

Mandy Sigley started granting wishes for Make-A-Wish Georgia exactly nine years ago, on the date of Woodstock Wishes, an event organized by Marco Rossi, owner of Woodstock City Lifestyle and Prime 120 Steakhouse. The first wish she granted was an accessible Spider-Man swing set.
Woodstock Wishes achieved another milestone. Thanks to generous guests, sponsors, and a silent auction, the night’s donations exceeded the $20,000 goal. A wish will be granted for a local child, family, and community, and their lives will be improved.
The event was abuzz with new and familiar faces and lively jazz. Bluesky Atlanta Jazz Band played through the night and provided a perfect background.
Guests were photographed in front of a media wall by Jessica Perkins. Many friendly faces attended, including Sierra and David Westrick, Tom Stratton and Jerry Jerabek, Tricia DeJarnett, Jennifer Haymes, and many more.
This event was a perfect example of a community of local businesses, organizations, and residents coming together for compassion and impact.
This recipe is quick and easy to make with just a few simple steps. It tastes great on its own, but dipping it in olive oil infused with fresh herbs adds an extra level of flavor.
INGREDIENTS:
• 1 ¾ cups warm water
• 2 ½ teaspoons sugar
• 1 package active dry yeast
• 4 cups flour
• 2 teaspoons salt
• 4 tablespoons olive oil
Optional:
• Fresh rosemary
• Coarse sea salt
• Fresh pressed garlic
Use a stand mixer with a fitted dough hook, and stir together the water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and stir again. Set mixture aside for 5 minutes. Mixture should be foamy. Next, add the flour and salt and mix on low until a shaggy dough forms. Increase speed and mix for an additional 4-5 minutes. Brush a large bowl with olive oil. Transfer the dough to the bowl and cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a damp towel. Set aside for about 1 to 1 ½ hours until the dough has doubled in size.
Brush a 9x13-inch baking dish with 2 tablespoons of oil. Uncover the dough and rub hands with olive oil. Slide your hands under the dough and fold it onto itself. Continue to work your way around the edge of the bowl, folding the dough onto itself until there is a ball that you can lift from the bowl. Place the dough in the prepared pan and press the dough to the edges. Cover the pan with plastic wrap or a damp towel and set aside to rise for about 45 minutes until the dough has doubled in size.
Preheat the oven to 425°F. Drizzle the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil over the dough. Rub your hands with olive oil and use your fingers to make indentions on the surface of the dough. Sprinkle it with salt and rosemary and any desired toppings. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown.

THIRD SPACES, COMMUNITY, AND YARN WITH ONE MORE ROW
Between home and work, there aren’t many communal spaces for women to form a community. Even less so if someone isn’t religious. The spaces that are scarcely found are often labeled as “third” spaces. They are where we congregate, share stories, laugh and cry.
Gabriella and Maria, the mother-daughter owners of One More Row yarn shop, are proud to call their business a third space for all. Tucked into a corner between Publix and Marco’s Pizza, One More Row has a cozy and inviting atmosphere. There is a big table, a couch, and chairs for lounging and chatting. On busier meeting days, they have plenty of folding chairs to accommodate everyone.
Maria likens their shop to a modern day “Quilting Bee”, a term that came about during 20th century industrialization when people were seeking a simpler way of life and community-building beyond the hustle and bustle of the time.
Maria began knitting as enrichment after her kids grew into teenagers. She says “I could get away for a Tuesday night and go sit and knit with a group of women.” Maria taught Gabriella how to knit, but Gabriella took off on her own creative journey.
Nowadays, One More Row is operated by both her and her daughter - she manages bookkeeping while Gabriella is responsible for teaching classes and running the creative side of the business. Gabriella says she has found nothing she can’t knit.
One More Row hosts stitch sessions on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays and welcomes anyone who wants to foster community or hone their craft. Gabriella says they aren’t in the business of only selling yarn; it goes hand-in-hand with prioritizing their community.
They began gathering at Copper Coin Coffee before the business closed. They weren’t willing to let their community go and opened up a shop with the dual mission of selling yarns from small makers and continuing to invest in their thriving community.
These third spaces are essential. While everyone is welcome, Gabriella, and Mara invite women who are seeking connection outside of motherhood or their marriage or the stressors of life to join a community where they can share stories, vent, and connect with other women.
You can find Gabby and Maria at onemorerow.net and @onemorerowwoodstock on Instagram. Stop by the shop at 6234 Holly Springs Pkwy Suite D1.

“Marco Rossi exemplifies true professionalism and attention to detail. Every step of the way he gave it 110% and made us feel at ease. He took the stress out of a usually stressful situation of getting your home ready to sell and have multiple showings per day. He was able to get our house multiple offers within the first week of it being listed for sale! He knew we were under a time crunch and followed accordingly. Listen to what he says in order to get your house show ready! We trust him with everything! We will definitely use him again if needed. We highly refer Marco to anyone looking to sell or purchase a home.”
- Rocio B.When Peyton began baking in 2019, she was looking for something creative and different to her background in marketing and the digital space. She recalls that 2019 was the time when baking became a favorite activity during the COVID shelter-in-place guidance.
Bread baking became a source of community for her; she was on many baking
forums, sharing tips and tricks and connecting with other bakers.
Peyton’s inspiration comes from working with her hands and purposefully disconnecting from the ever-present online world. She says, “I really like being able to get my hands on dough or just zone out and get into the mix of things.” And, of course,
bringing people enjoyment from her products is unparalleled.
In 2023, she resumed baking after taking a break for IVF, pregnancy, and childbirth. Peyton found that providing a service and handmade product to her community fulfilled her and ignited her passion.
Beyond products like sourdough, she is branching out into French pastry-making this year with items like Pain au Chocolat and
croissants. With a constant desire for growth in her craft, she is thrilled to offer more pastries and breads in the coming months.
A Girl with Nice Buns proudly provides quality breads and pastries with ingredient transparency to the Woodstock and Canton communities. She is an official vendor for Woodstock Farm Fresh Market.
You can find Peyton at agirlwithnicebuns.com and @agirlwithnicebuns on Instagram.
