LIFESTYLE LETTER

Hello friend

January 2024 PUBLISHER

Marco Rossi | marco.rossi@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R I AL C O O R D I N ATO R

Sue G. Collins | scollins@citylifestyle.com

For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Woodstock City Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health - it's not what you do some days that moves the needle - it's what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn't best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It's not the sometimes choices we make, it's the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you've been wanting to try. It's not what you do some days - it's what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous year. Here's to you! We're rooting for you.

Supporting a senior loved one who requires assistance involves a multifaceted approach to promoting their overall health and independence. Connection is important as regular social interactions positively impact mental and emotional well-being. A recent report by the U.S. Surgeon General states there is a national loneliness epidemic, and the senior population has the highest rate of social isolation. It discusses the increased risk for anxiety, depression and dementia and susceptibility to viruses and respiratory illness.

By integrating connection and professional caregiving, families can create a comprehensive support system that addresses both the practical and emotional aspects of senior health. This holistic approach not only enhances their quality of life but also empowers them to age with dignity and grace. Seniors Helping Seniors Northwest Atlanta 470,995.6977 SHSNorthwestAtlanta.com How can families help their aging loved ones to make more social connections? They can incorporate caregivers from a home care agency. This helps them maintain their independence by getting assistance with daily tasks and establishing strong relationships. This improves their physical well-being while boosting their mental and emotional health. When a caregiver has similar interests or life experiences and understands the aging process, it becomes easier to accept assistance with daily activities that may be a little more difficult for them.

Good-bye Heartache,

Hello Happiness!

“What if we could address the loneliness, the ache Christie Poole’s personal experiences and early career feed her work as a therapist. She worked as a program coordinator for a non-profit for teens, provided therapy in a church setting and established a private practice. She taught college courses, led Bible studies and organized other church programs. She also spent many years raising a family—being a wife, homeschooling three children, and experiencing the joys and sorrows that accompany this life. “These experiences have reaffirmed my belief in the importance of relationships, family, and faith to personal fulfillment,” says Christie, who founded Family Renewal Counseling in Woodstock.

of emptiness? And what if 2024 could be our best year because it became the starting point for healing ourselves and our relationships?”

Sue G. Collins: As we press restart in the new year, what advice can you give individuals and families thinking of pursuing counseling? Christie Poole: When I hear "restart," what I think of is beginning again. What if we had a chance to begin again? What if we could restart our relationships with less conflict? With less pain? What if the coldness we feel toward our spouse or family member had the chance to become loving again? What if, as individuals, we could reboot without heavy levels of depression or anxiety, without the nagging sensation every day that something inside doesn't feel right? What if we could address the loneliness, the ache of emptiness? And what if 2024 could be our best year because it became the starting point for healing ourselves and our relationships? My advice would be - do it. Take the chance to live fully.

SGC: You provide tools to help us deal with life's challenges. What are a few other benefits of counseling? CP: Physicians are trained to heal the body. therapists are trained to help heal your heart and mind. The worries that keep you up at night, the heaviness in your heart, the weight you feel making you want to stay in bed - we help you unburden those painful places. For couples and families stuck in conflict, we help you change the pattern that drives division and heartache to one that blossoms, drawing you closer together. Quality counseling can be life-changing.

SGC: How can people find out more about Family Renewal Counseling? CP: You can find our website at FamilyRenewalCounseling.com. You can follow us on Facebook or Instagram. Or you can call us at 678.631.7639 to talk with someone about setting up an appointment. F l y F i s h i n g Fo reve r FINDING ZEN ON THE RIVER

ARTICLE BY SUE G. COLLINS

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | FI TNE SS

Fly fishing appeals to die-hard competitors and also to the yogis on their solitary journey towards Zen. From Alpharetta, in a little over an hour, we can be wading the Toccoa River or floating the Chattahoochee in pursuit of trout, flies considered and fly rods rigged. Attitude adjustment underway. “Some people say fly fishing is too much work, but that’s exactly why I love it! I’ve never been so relaxed yet so focused at the same time as I am when I’m fly fishing,” says Tiffany Barker of Woodstock. “Watching the drift, mending the line, adjusting the depth, changing the fly, casting the line and stripping it in, all while being immersed in the beauty of nature. When most people are retreating indoors because of the colder weather, we bundle up to go fish. The Waders practically make you a superhero… you’re waterproof, cold doesn’t phase you, and you kinda feel invincible. What’s not to like?” Tiffany, who lives in Woodstock with her husband Brad Barker, and their daughter, Taylor, wanted to learn how to fly fish, so she enrolled in Orvis casting classes. Her casting 201 session was led by Rebecca Sue Kline who introduced her to Georgia Women Fly Fishers.

“I didn’t know anyone who fly fished, I didn’t have anyone to learn from, and I didn’t even know where to start. Joining GWFF provided a wealth of resources and put me in contact with a group of amazing women who all share the same passion for being outdoors and fishing. It was just what I needed to feel confident enough to get out on the water. There’s a wide range of experience levels in the group, so whether you’ve been fly fishing your whole life or you’re just starting out, there’s something for everyone,” says Tiffany. Tiffany joined a group from work late last year for a guided float trip down the South Holsten in Bristol, TN. While she was posing with a pretty brown trout she'd just caught, with her rod tucked under her arm she felt a repetitive tug on the rod. “I thought, no way. I’ve been trying to catch fish all day, and when I’m not trying, I end up catching one.” There was a rainbow trout at the end of her line. “So I guess you could say I learned you can catch fish when you’re not even trying.” Tiffany makes the world a brighter place as a brand representative for lighting manufacturers. When Tiffany isn't fishing, her family enjoys JD’s On The Lake for the beautiful view and fantastic fried shrimp.

“Joining GWFF provided a wealth of resources and put me in contact with a group of amazing women who all share the same passion for being outdoors and fishing. It was just what I needed to feel confident enough to get out on the water.”

“Marco Rossi exemplifies true professionalism and attention to detail. Every step of the way he gave it 110% and made us feel at ease. He took the stress out of a usually stressful situation of getting your home ready to sell and have multiple showings per day. He was able to get our house multiple offers within the first week of it being listed for sale! He knew we were under a time crunch and followed accordingly. Listen to what he says in order to get your house show ready! We trust him with everything! We will definitely use him again if needed. We highly refer Marco to anyone looking to sell or purchase a home.”

Let’s Talk About This Judy Rossi spills the tea ARTICLE BY WOODSTOCK CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF PHOTOGRAPHY BY JORDAN SHANKMAN

WOODSTOCK CITY LIFESTYLE: WHAT NEW STRATEGIES ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT PUTTING INTO ACTION FOR YOUR CLIENTS IN 2024 AT WOODSTOCK PELVIC HEALTH?

J U D Y

R O S S I

Certified Pelvic Health Specialist

Judy Rossi: We look forward to adding two new therapists, Jenny Thompson and Stacy Murphy to our staff to allow us to help more people with pelvic pain, incontinence, prolapse, pain during pregnancy and postpartum recovery.

WCL: GOING TO A SPECIALIST DOCTOR WHEN YOU HAVEN'T BEEN IN A WHILE CAN BE VERY INTIMIDATING. WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU SHARE TO MOTIVATE US THIS MONTH?

JR: Too many people suffer silently from problems related to their pelvic floor and are often too afraid or embarrassed to make that first appointment. We pride ourselves in providing a safe space and a warm environment to calm those nerves. My advice is to feel the fear and do it anyway! It’s a new year and a new you!

WCL: RUNNING A BUSINESS AND MEETING WITH PATIENTS MUST BE EXHAUSTING (IN A GOOD WAY). WHAT ARE YOUR GO-TO POWER SNACKS?

JR: A handful of nuts, especially walnuts, which are a superfood.

WCL: WHAT MIGHT OUR READERS BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT THE TREATMENT YOU OFFER PATIENTS?

JR: Many people have never heard of pelvic floor physical therapy. I often hear the words from my patients, “I didn’t even know this was a thing! Why didn’t my doctor tell me about it?” OR “Maybe I wouldn’t be having all these problems if I had seen a pelvic floor therapist right after having my baby years ago!” We have tried and true methods to solve issues that many think are sort of normal, like pain with intimacy or incontinence. Lots of cases of hip pain and low back pain are also related to pelvic floor dysfunction. Another thing many people are surprised to hear is that men have pelvic floor problems too. These issues can present as urinary pain and problems with intimacy. It’s our absolute passion to provide solutions to these problems.
