helping at-risk children in East Winter Garden and supporting adoption and foster care. They also partner with Do Good Farm in Winter Garden, a sustainable farm that seeks to end hunger and malnutrition locally and globally.

House Blend Cafe opened in Ocoee on the corner of 50 and Bluford in February 2006. Josh Taylor, the cafe’s general manager, believes the cafe’s location is the perfect spot to make the most community impact. He also foresaw the potential for community growth.

“This was and still is a growing area. More and more people are moving to Florida every day. Within Florida, Central Florida is a popular spot. Within Central Florida, West Orange County is a popular spot for growth,” says Taylor. “There’s quite a number of people that move to the area every day on the west side of town. So that was one thing that we considered 18 years ago, and it’s still a factor.”

Over its 18-year history, the cafe has grown and adapted to the changing landscape of Central Florida and the economy. Just two years after the cafe opened, it was affected by the Great Recession in 2008.

“We really had to get creative to make sure that we were running our business efficiently. We worked hard to grow the catering side of what we do. Which has developed into what we have today,” says Taylor.

During the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the cafe streamlined its menu and focused on increasing takeout orders, catering, and ready-to-eat family meals.

“Once again, we had to get creative with how we ran our business in a way that people felt safe when they did business with us,” Taylor says.

The cafe has also combatted rising inflation in the years following the pandemic, expanding its catering services to provide diverse and affordable selections for a wide range of events, from weddings to office lunches.

The cafe is less than five minutes from several major Central Florida roadways, including the Turnpike, 429 and 408. This allows the cafe to serve a wide range of customers, from people living in Winter Garden and Ocoee who grab a cup of coffee on their way to work to businesses that need to cater a 300-person lunch in Downtown Orlando.

“We can get to just about anywhere in the Greater Orlando area—even the east side—in about 30 minutes,” Taylor says.

The cafe is an extension of the community, allowing customers to gather to share a meal, connect with others and learn about causes affecting the community.

“My favorite thing about working at House Blend is the customers. We truly have the best customers in the world.

They make coming to work every day so much easier,” says cafe team member Madi Murphy.

House Blend Cafe serves breakfast and lunch Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The menu features a variety of items with American, Southwestern, Cajun and Caribbean influences. The cafe is known for its salads, paninis, soups, homemade waffles, burritos and wraps. It also has a complete coffee and espresso menu featuring locally roasted coffee beans from Axum Roastery in downtown Winter Garden.

The catering menu offers a variety of pasta dishes, fajitas and BBQ. Breakfast catering options include waffle bars, pastry and bagel platters, bacon, sausage and eggs.

In the future, House Blend Cafe desires to make an even greater impact by expanding its catering offerings and reaching more customers.

“We are constantly in awe at the outpouring of support we continually receive from our community. We are grateful for all those who have joined us in ‘doing good’ and look forward to the future,” says the cafe’s manager, Jonathan Daigle.

The restaurant menu includes keto-friendly, vegetarian and gluten-free options like power bowls, superfood-packed wraps, salads, fruit smoothies and snacks. The kid’s menu includes healthy versions of classics like mac and cheese, boneless chicken wings, and pizza rolls. The meal prep menu changes weekly, with meals like hibachi chicken, breakfast burritos and BBQ mashed potato bowls rotating throughout the year.

The frozen meals can be thawed and reheated in a microwave, on a stovetop, or in an oven. This makes them a convenient option to have a healthy meal ready to eat without defaulting to the drive-thru.

To Anthony, keeping the meals affordable for families is a high priority. Each graband-go meal retails between $6 to $8 each.

“You can’t go to McDonald’s these days for that amount,” says Anthony. “We’re able to have things that are healthy, tasty and affordable. That’s really big for our guests.”

Anthony transitioned to restaurant ownership after a career in corporate America as an accountant for a medical biotech company. This career is what brought him, his wife, and two children to the Central Florida area six years ago. Anthony was on the road a lot for work, but being home during COVID put things in perspective. He desired to have a more flexible career.

“I wanted to spend more time with my family. That helped make a decision on doing something that our family can do together as well as have a good purpose in our community,” Anthony says.

Anthony decided to turn his interest in fitness and healthy eating into a career, opening a Clean Eatz Cafe franchise just a few miles from his home.

“I love the people and this community. It’s really almost like a giant family,” he says.

“WE REALLY HAVE MEALS FOR EVERYBODY.”

“I used to be away from my family a lot. By actually being here down the street, I can bring my kids to school. I’m able to pick them up. We can do activities…whether my son plays basketball or my daughter plays soccer…doing those types of things was really a Godsend.”

Anywho, I’ve been committed to my well-being and mental health lately! One of my New Year’s resolutions is to take 5 minutes a day to practice mindfulness. With the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it can sometimes be hard to tap into your feelings and really process them. So, I’ve got a life hack to share: a gratitude journal! It’s a simple, healthy habit that I’ve found makes a big difference in my happiness. You know what they say: an entry a day keeps the bad thoughts away!

HERE'S HOW I CREATED MY GRATITUDE JOURNAL:

• Attach photos that make you happy on the cover or pages

• Get creative! Doodle stars, hearts, flowers, whatever makes you feel happy

• Write inspirational quotes or mantras in the margins

• Note special dates or moments, and write about why you’re grateful for those events and people

Another way I tap into gratitude is by practicing mindfulness! This means setting aside time to simply be aware of the present moment. When I quiet my mind and give my brain a break, it helps me clear out negative thoughts and welcome positive ones. Try it with me and follow along below! Shedding Light On Window Care

LOCAL WINDOW CLEANING EXPERT SHARES TIPS FOR A SPARKLY SHINE

WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES FLORIDA HOMEOWNERS FACE WHEN MAINTAINING THEIR WINDOWS?

One of the challenges is irrigation systems spraying water onto windows. Hard water deposits get onto the window, which damages it over time. When they initially get on the glass, you can clean it off. But over time, with the sun baking that water onto the glass, you get a weird whitewash or a ring. It will fog up the glass until it’s not clear, and you can’t get it off just by washing it—you have to polish it. At the end of the day, it will get back on there, and if you don’t take care of it, you won’t have a crystal clear glass.

WHAT ARE SOME MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE WHEN INSTALLING OR REPAIRING WINDOWS?

You don’t want to pressure wash your windows because it could damage their efficiency. It can also void your warranty. A lot of new homes have double-pane windows, and you don’t want to pressure wash those because it can damage the seal. If your seal breaks on a double-pane window, it will completely fog up until you can’t see out of it. That’s because there’s a gas in between the window [panes] that dissipates the heat from coming into your home.

If you’re renovating, not protecting the windows during construction is another mistake. Construction materials get on the windows, and one of the only ways to get those materials off is to use a scraper, like a razor blade. With newer windows nowadays, you’re not supposed to use a scraper because it’s more susceptible to scratches. You can’t get it off without damaging the paint or scratching the glass.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PROFESSIONAL WINDOW WASHING AND DIY-ING IT?

There are two ways to clean a window on your own. You can either use deionized purified water or a detergent with a squeegee. Once a homeowner tries to go and clean their windows, they usually take a rag and some water, which just pushes the dirt all around. You just don’t get a crystal clear clean that way. A professional window cleaner can create that crystal clear clean by washing with pure water, detergents, & abrasives specifically designed for window cleaning. This will clean the home without damaging it.

HOW CAN YOU PROTECT YOUR WINDOWS LONG TERM?

Having them cleaned regularly is the best way to protect your windows. If you don’t, you’ll get algae, and the paint [around the window] can oxidize, which makes the window dirty. I recommend getting your windows cleaned every six months. The second and fourth quarters are the best times to get your windows cleaned. So, around the springtime and before the holidays.

GRILLED SALMON WITH WHITE RICE AND ROASTED VEGETABLES

Grilled Salmon with White Rice and Roasted Vegetables Ingredients

For Grilled Salmon:

• 4 salmon fillets (about 6 oz each)

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 1 teaspoon lemon zest

• 2 tablespoons lemon juice

• 1 teaspoon dried dill

For White Rice:

• 1 cup white rice

• 2 cups water

For Roasted Vegetables:

• 2 cups mixed vegetables (such as cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, and zucchini), chopped

• 1 tablespoon olive oil

• Fresh herbs for garnish (optional)

Directions

1. Grill Salmon:

• Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Grill the salmon for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until the salmon is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.

2. Prepare White Rice:

• In a saucepan, combine white rice and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and water is absorbed. Fluff with a fork and set aside.

3. Roast Vegetables:

• Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

• Toss the mixed vegetables with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Spread them on a baking sheet and roast for about 15-20 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender and slightly caramelized.
