The Start Of Our 3rd Year, The Best One Yet! For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons, and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes or simple check box short-term items. Instead, we wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional, and mental health. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home, and personal health – it's not what you do some days that move the needle - it's what you do MOST days. For better or worse! This issue is our 25th and reflects our 2nd anniversary of being The Guide To Living Your Best Life in Winter Garden, Horizon West, and Windermere. We are humbled and honored by YOU, our Readers, we wouldn't be here without you, and we look forward to another great year ahead! We also want to send some love to our Advertising Partners. We support Buying Local! Every one of the businesses and organizations you see advertising in our magazine has been vetted by us and has the same involvement and dedication to our community as we do. Thank you for inviting us into your home and sharing your lives with us. Here's to you and your family; live boldly, enjoy our community, be involved, and truly Live Your Best Life! Sticking to your New Year
Goals
How to Set Goals, Stay Committed, and Find Success this New Year. ARTICLE BY MARY-SLOAN SMART (@MRS.MARYSLOANSMART)

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | L I F E + CULTURE
A new year means a time for change. We have all gone into a new year with the hopes of it being the "best year yet." But what if this year actually was? Setting resolutions at the beginning of the year is a great way to set your intentions for the year, but we need to understand how we can actually make change. It starts with a bit of motivation, a lot of planning, and, most importantly, a positive mindset. Changing your mind is a strength, not a weakness. Here are a few tips that can hopefully help you fulfill those new year's goals.
1. START SMALL When we set a goal, looking at the big picture and what we need to do to get there can be daunting. So, it's important to have smaller goals that help you achieve your overall plan. For example, if you think you want to run a marathon but haven't worked out in over a year and are overweight, start walking every day. You
want to ensure you are hitting smaller goals to build confidence for the future. Try breaking your main goal into smaller increments. Instead of trying to dedicate yourself for 3 months, 6 months, or a year, commit 6 weeks to being consistent. You can make complete changes in 6 weeks, even if it's small! This will help establish good habits and motivate you to stick it out to the end.
2. UNDERSTAND YOUR WHY. There is a reason you have the same or similar resolutions year after year. What is your reason for wanting change? Digging deeper into understanding what is holding you back and your reason for change will encourage you to push forward when things get tough. For example, if your resolution is to lose weight, finding out why that's important to you matters. Is it to look a certain way, or a certain way. Maybe the real reason is to get healthier so you
can play longer with your kids? Or go on bike rides with your spouse. When you find the root of your reason, you have a better chance for success.
3. POSITIVE THOUGHTS & DAILY AFFIRMATIONS. Your mind is your biggest weakness. However, there is proof that changing your thinking can lead to physical changes. Most of the time, we are our own worst enemy. While time and life can get in the way, it's usually our minds that talk us out of accomplishing our goals. Remind yourself of all the good things about you and what you are capable of every single day. Find a few positive affirmations to say to yourself at the beginning of each day or when you start to think negatively, and tell them over and over until you believe them. Here are a few you can start with: "I am capable. I am confident. I am loved. I am worthy of success." I know that sounds cheesy, but try it; you might surprise yourself. CONTINUED >

M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | L I F E + CULTURE
“I AM CAPABLE. I AM CONFIDENT. I AM LOVED. I AM WORTHY OF SUCCESS.”
4. TRACK YOUR PROGRESS. You have probably heard this over and over, but have you ever actually done it? There is nothing more motivating than seeing actual change – this can be hard if you have no proof of where you started. Take pictures, use an app, track your weight, and use a journal. Whatever your goal is, find the best means to track it and start immediately. It will be hard at first, and you might hate looking at the beginning, but once you get a few weeks in and start feeling unmotivated, look back at where you started, and I guarantee you will find the motivation to keep going.
5. ANTICIPATE PROBLEMS AND FAILURE. Everyone fails; it's ok. But start back immediately. Don't say, "I'll start again on Monday," because then you start giving yourself the excuse every time you hit a road bump. Accepting failure is a part of growth but pushing past that failure leads to success. However, this doesn't mean you should give yourself excuses. For instance, we all live busy lives, and I'm sure many of us use time as an excuse, but there is enough time in the day. It's up to you to dedicate that time to accomplish the things you want. For example, if you want to read more this year, wake up an extra hour early and take just 15 to 30 minutes for yourself to read your favorite book. Before you know it,
you will love that extra "me time" in the morning before the craziness of life begins.
6. REWARD YOURSELF. I believe rewarding yourself along the way is just as important as rewarding yourself at the end. Sometimes our goals can take months or even the entire year, but you need to recognize the success that is happening throughout that time. Daily rewards for accomplishing your goals can be something to look forward to each day. For example, if you worked out or read 50 pages, give yourself a small reward at the end of the day – maybe that's one piece of chocolate or an hour of television. But remember, you only get to have the reward if you actually complete the task. And, of course, plan a big reward at the end of your goal. If it's 6 weeks, plan to treat yourself to a spa day if you stick to your plan. If it's 6 months, plan a mini vacation. Having something to look forward to can help keep you motivated throughout your journey. Whatever your new year's resolution or goal is this year, know that change takes time. It won't happen overnight or in a few days, but staying consistent and reminding yourself of what you are capable of will lead you to success. We all have the desire to change, so grab a partner, set your goals, and get started. There is no better time than now.

Our community is filled with a diverse range of fantastic restaurants and food spots to choose from, but when it comes to healthy options, choices can feel limited. Clean Eatz is here to solve the problem. Anthony Ferguson opened Clean Eatz three months ago in hopes of bringing a new healthy option to the Winter Garden community. "Clean Eatz is a franchise. With all the new development in our community, there weren't many, if any, healthy "reasonably" priced restaurants. So, once I discovered Clean Eatz, I knew it was the right business to help serve my community and provide a service that I truly believed in." Anthony
was born in Massachusetts, raised in New Hampshire, and moved to Winter Garden five years ago. After serving in the U.S. Army and working many years in Corporate America, he realized his true passion is helping people. He spends his time volunteering, coaching, mentoring, and getting tons of exercise. So, he wanted something that would bring those things together; "I know I would not be able to maintain my fitness and energy level without the proper nutrition. My wife and two kids also truly understand the importance of healthy eating, as that is our fuel for healthy success. So, opening a Clean Eatz gives me the best of both worlds. An opportunity to coach and mentor a team. As well as an opportunity to help educate the local community of the importance of healthy eating." Clean Eatz offers a wide selection of healthy and delicious food. You can grab something healthy and fresh from the café menu, which includes wrapz, flatbreadz, meltz, burgerz, smoothies, and so much more. They even have options for those looking to bulk up and build muscle. So if you are working on your fitness and don't want to deal with CONTINUED >

the hassle of cooking and meal prep, let Clean Eatz do the work. They offer an extensive meal plan that is built just for you. Their goal is to give everyone properly portioned size meals with a balance of protein, carbs, and fats. This helps to eliminate the guessing and lack of being prepared for those who want change. "Diets don't work, and you can not out exercise poor eating habits (trust me, I tried)! It's about consistently eating "clean" and healthy proper portion sizes." The new year is here, and I know many of us are trying to change our health and lifestyle. Let Clean Eatz help you reach those goals. The people at Clean Eatz are committed to helping everyone make better lifestyle choices and inspire motivation. "I love interacting with guests. Westly’s
Guarantee for 2023
ARTICLE BY WESTLY WITH HEALTHY WEST ORANGE (@HEALTHYWESTORANGE) PHOTOGRAPHY BY HEALTHY WEST ORANGE
Hey, y’all, Westly here. If we haven’t met, I’m the charming, handsome, and humble orange character you’ve been seeing around town with my friends at Healthy West Orange. You can’t miss me! Who else is feeling ready for a fresh start in 2023? As we’ve learned in the last couple of years, sometimes a new year doesn’t happen the way we think it will. But I know one thing’s for sure, our community is awesome! Whether your goals involve getting active, eating healthy, relaxing, or all of the above, there are places in Winter Garden to do it all! So come along on my tour of some healthy spots right in our backyard. I’ve got a few tips on hand that you might not know about. You’ll love them; that’s my guarantee for 2023!
WEST ORANGE TRAIL, WORKOUTS YOUR WAY There’s no way you can stroll around Winter Garden and not see folks zooming down the West Orange Trail on bikes, rollerblades, and on foot. I’m talking 22 miles of paved trail, from Apopka, through Ocoee, Winter Garden, and Oakland. It’s definitely the best way to get around town! But have you seen how many workout groups, activities, and events happen along the trail? You can rent

a bike from Wheelworks and snip fresh herbs at my community garden in Oakland, or join a local exercise group like the West Orange Trail Sole-Mates, or Winter Garden Runners! I love seeing folks get active together; it adds motivation and encouragement to a workout, and not to mention making new friends! You can train for a marathon or take a relaxing walk with your pup, which is my favorite way to enjoy the trail. You can even see me at the Oakland Outpost cheering folks on! Stop by and snap a healthy selfie with me in 2023.
WINTER GARDEN FARMERS MARKET, MORE TO EXPLORE Speaking of traveling the town on the West Orange Trail, one of my favorite stops off the trail is the Winter Garden Farmers Market! This is my go-to for fresh fruits, veggies, and more! But it’s more than just buying produce; I love chatting with local farmers about what’s in season, how to cook it, what items hold up best for meal-prepping, and even how to grow my own backyard garden! So be sure to stop and talk with the vendors. For instance, I had never heard of microgreens before, and now I pick them up every Saturday to put on all my salads! A top goal of mine for the new year is to add one more fruit or vegetable to my plate

Between early school mornings, commuting, and long days in front of computer screens, everyone needs a mental well-being break once in a while. Picture this: you’re walking under the shade of beautiful oak trees, listening to the birds sing, and watching the water ripple along a lake. Reset Tips: 1) Stick to the Sides: An effective psychological trick for making better eating choices is to stick to the perimeter of the grocery store when shopping. Visualize the layout of your local market, and you’ll quickly realize the produce, meat, and dairy sections flank the rest of the selection. This is where you’ll find the most nutrient-dense, unprocessed foods in line with a clean eating goal. Conversely, the inside aisles are where processed foods, inflammatory chips, and sauces, sugar-laden cookies, and sodas lurk in their enticing packaging. Avoiding the items in these aisles will not only make your waistline thinner, but your energy, mindset, and overall health will vastly improve. 2) Preparation is Key/Eat at Home: Writing out a weekly meal plan can reduce the stress of making healthy choices during the busy work week. Determining what you’re having for
dinner and doing all the shopping prior to the start of the week will keep you on track. If you’re not super into cooking, start small with 2-3 proteins and 2-3 side dishes that you can make in bulk and mix and match throughout the week. Then, once you get into a rhythm, you’ll realize just how much better you feel and how much money you’re saving by avoiding restaurants and takeout. 3) Make your Dressings: If you were to ask the average person what a healthy meal option is, most would say “salad.” While salads are a great way to pack nutrients and protein into one filling plate, much of that can be negated by the artificial, inflammatory dressing that they’re tossed in. Using simple ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen, you can create incredible, flavorful dressings and sauces that won’t put a damper on your healthy lunch. Here is a recipe for one of my favorites!

DON’T CALL THEM
Mocktails! Once upon a time, non-alcoholic cocktails, or mocktails, had a pretty ho-hum reputation. Club soda with lime, maybe a Shirley Temple, or if you were feeling daring, a Roy Rogers — Boring and sometimes awkwardly childish! Luckily, we're living in a heyday of alcohol-free options that are just as fun, sophisticated, and delicious as their boozy counterparts. Between the plethora of non-alcoholic wine, beer, and spirits available combined with local Mixologist and cocktail menus embracing non-ABV options, it's easier than ever to avoid imbibing without feeling left out. At home, whether it's for your guests or yourself, it's always a good idea to add a fun and refreshing cocktail into the mix, but without the guilt (or extra calories)! Here are our favorite easy, delicious non-alcoholic recipes to serve up!
Helping you with your resolution to drink less, only not!

SEEDLIP'S SPICED MARTIN'NO Cocktails don't get more classic than the martini. And if it happens to be your regular drink, chances are no one makes it better than you. So follow your favorite recipe and substitute Seedlip's Spice 94 for your favorite spirit. But, if you're new to non-alcoholic mixology, this is an excellent place to start; one from which you can begin adjusting ingredients and proportions until you've reached something that tastes just right.
RITUAL ZERO PROOF'S ALL DAY MARGARITA Ritual Zero Proof's virgin margarita is the undisputed champ of tequila cocktails in its most classic form. This version is made with orange juice instead of triple sec, but you can leave the triple sec for a low abv version if you like. Or take the fast lane with high quality (repeat: high quality) mix. Make it frozen or on the rocks. Standard or spicy. Throw in some fresh herbs if the mood strikes.
INGREDIENTS:
INGREDIENTS:
• • • • •
• 2 oz Ritual Zero Proof Tequila Alternative • 1 oz Orange Juice • 1 oz fresh Lime Juice • 1/2 oz. Simple Syrup • Lime slice or wedge
1 oz Seedlip Spice 94 ¼ oz Olive Brine ¼ oz Verjus Lemon Zest Castelvetrano Olive
METHOD: Add ingredients to a mixing glass w/ ice, Stir (don't shake) & Strain. Garnish with lemon zest and a Castelvetrano Olive.
SEEDLIP'S COSMO-NO-POLITAN This non-alcoholic take on a classic cosmo incorporates some herbal notes from Seedlip's Grove 42 that pairs beautifully with the mix of juices. As a result, it has all the flavor that Carrie Bradshaw would want, minus the hangovers and regrettable decisions.
INGREDIENTS: • • • • •
2 oz Seedlip Grove 42 1 oz Organic Cranberry Juice ½ oz fresh Lime Juice ½ oz Simple Syrup Orange Peel
METHOD: Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with an orange peel.
METHOD: Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake, shake, shake. Pour into a cocktail glass, and garnish with a lime slice or wedge. CONTINUED >

RITUAL ZERO PROOF'S WHISKEY ZERO, SOUR This zero-proof cocktail hits two sides of your taste buds; the Ritual Zero Proof whiskey alternative and the simple syrup provide the sweetness, which plays off the citric tang of the lemon juice. The egg white gives the whole thing body and foam, ensuring that you get a non-alcoholic but authentic take on the classic whiskey sour. And if that raw egg white throws you, no problem. You can avoid it (and make this cocktail by substituting one ounce of chickpea juice--also known as aquafaba).
INGREDIENTS: • 2 oz Ritual Zero Proof Whiskey Alternative • 3/4 oz fresh Lemon Juice • 1/2 oz Simple Syrup • 1 Egg White • Lemon slice or wedge
METHOD: Combine all ingredients in an ice-filled shaker and shake until frothy. Pour into a cocktail glass and garnish with a lemon slice or wedge, if desired.

SEEDLIP'S ESPRESSO MARTINI If you like your coffee like you like your martinis--cold, dark, and full of flavor-you'll like this version of the Espresso Martini. Even if you take your morning cup hot and black, you'll still probably find something to like in this zero-alcohol recipe that's both bitter and sweet. Strong coffee, preferably chilled, can be subbed if you don't have access to freshly pulled Espresso!
RITUAL ZERO PROOF'S NOT SO OLD FASHIONED When you get right down to it, the Bourbon Old Fashioned is little more than a slug of whiskey, seasoned and sweetened. Yet, for all its sophisticated simplicity, the drink remains as relevant today as it was when it first captured drinkers' hearts 200 years ago. In Ritual Zero Proof's version, you can have all the flavors without the ABV!
INGREDIENTS:
INGREDIENTS:
• 2 oz Seedlip Spice 94 • 2 oz fresh Espresso (or coffee concentrate can be substituted) • ½ oz Simple Syrup • Coffee Bean garnish
• • • •
METHOD: Add Spice 94, Espresso, and Simple Syrup to a mixing glass with ice. Mix with a bar spoon until well chilled. Strain into a glass and add Coffee Bean as garnish.
2 oz Ritual Zero Proof's Rum Alternative ½ oz Maple Syrup 3-5 dashes of Bitters Orange peel and cherry for garnish
METHOD: Add rum alternative, syrup, and bitters to a mixing glass with ice. Mix with a bar spoon until well chilled. Strain over ice. You can learn more about Seedlip at SeedlipDrinks.com or @SeedlipDrinks and Ritual Zero Proof at RitualZeroProof.com or @RitualZeroProof.

Sleep 2 Wellness in 2023! ARTICLE BY DR. WENDI WARDLAW (@STONEYBROOKDENTAL) The better you sleep, the healthier you will be. Sleep Matters! For a healthy, happy, and whole life without disease, you must place a high value on SLEEP. Did you know that we have been observing the effects of daylight saving time on the body for years? Every spring, when we lose just one hour of sleep, there is a 24% increase in heart attacks the very next day. The opposite occurs in the Fall when we gain one hour with a 21% reduction in heart attacks. Could our system be this sensitive to sleep? Absolutely yes! Our body's immune system has a 007 stranger danger defense mechanism, which identifies and eliminates unwanted elements. They're called the Natural Killer Cells and keep us safe from diseases like cancer. Studies have shown that having only four hours of sleep for one night will decrease this defensive system by 70%! Imagine the damage to the immune system after a lack of, impaired, or inadequate sleep. This link is so indisputable that The World Health Organization (WHO) recently classified any form of nighttime shift work as a probable carcinogen. You read me correctly. Research has shown that sleep before learning prepares the brain for intake and a quick nap after new information hits the save button on our memory in the hippocampus. Our brains need sleep to make new memories. Short naps are great when studying for multiple exams. Studies show that if a man only has five hours of sleep a night, he has the testosterone levels of a man ten years his senior. Women will also have a decrease in estrogen. Research also shows that after only one week of short sleep, your blood sugar levels could be classified as pre-diabetic. We need to value every hour of sleep and make it a priority for wellness in our bodies. There is no part of our bodies that isn’t affected by sleep.

Dr. Wendi Wardlaw What can we do? 1. Most importantly, regularity is the king of good sleep. Go to bed and wake up at the same time. Regularity will anchor your sleep and improve quality and quantity. 2. Sleep cool with circulating air to match the 2-3 degrees Fahrenheit drop the body needs to get to sleep and stay asleep. Sleeping in a hot room increases breathing rate, snoring, and sleep apnea. 3. 8 hours matter; 6 hours is not enough. Yes, this hurts me, also. 4. We are a diurnal species, not a nocturnal species. We are mainly active during the day and sleep at night. Wear a sleep mask to simulate night. 5. Know your chronotype. Are you a morning person or a night person? Knowing this allows you to maximize your best waking hours. Find out by taking the MEQ (Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire) at QXMD.com. "Sleep is not an optional lifestyle luxury; it's a non-negotiable biological necessity. It is our life support system. Short sleep will make for a short life", Matthew Walker, Ph.D. Find additional resources at Sleep2Wellness.com
