It's a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is genuinely a priority or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year's resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community-focused revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and making daily decisions to acting on them. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical fitness, and purposeful connections. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit is the focus of this issue. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health, and love. Thank You, Rainey Levin (321-662-2607 | OneRaineyDay), for this month's cover of Fencer Jackson Simms. This will be her third cover for us, and we love her photography! We also want to send some love to our Advertising Partners. We support Buying Local! Every one of the businesses and organizations you see advertising in our magazine has been vetted by us and has the same involvement and dedication to our community as we do. Lastly, we hope you like the changes we made to our new name, the creative layout, and the new sections. Drop us an email or direct message to share your thoughts. Thank you for inviting us into your home and sharing your lives with us. Here's to you and your family; live boldly, enjoy our community, be involved, and truly Live Your Best Life! Here's to a healthy and happy 2022! ANTHONY S. ADAMS, PUBLISHER @WGLIFEST YLEMAG

DR. RAJAB ABUKHADRAH, MD, FACG, serves South Lake Gastroenterology patients in Winter Garden, rotating his appointments at all locations. Known as ‘Dr. Khadrah’, he has been in practice for over 30 years and remains inspired to help people feel better, so they can enjoy their active lives. He is the founder and practicing physician of the Clermont clinic. He is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He received his medical degree from the University of Jordan Faculty of Medicine. He is the current Chief of Gastroenterology at South Lake Hospital. Dr. Khadrah is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Florida Gastroenterology Society, and Fellow in American College of Gastroenterology. DR. SILVIA FERNANDEZ is one of the primary Winter Garden doctors. Born in Cuba, she graduated from the Higher Institute of Medicine of Havana in 2001. She completed three years of Family Medicine in Havana. After that, she practiced Family Medicine in Chile while gathering experiences as a Family Doctor, Emergency Services Physician and Hemodialysis Associate Physician. Dr. Fernandez moved here to the United States and first worked in the
Rheumatology field in Miami. She received her Internal Medicine training at Metropolitan Hospital in Manhattan. She continued to pursue her dream of becoming a Gastroenterologist by completing her advanced training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Metropolitan Hospital, Woodhull Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Dr. Fernandez works at South Lake Gastroenterology Winter Garden and South Lake Hospital with Orlando Health. Dr. Fernandez earned prestigious diplomas and awards over the past 20 years. Her colleagues respect her as a compassionate and thorough doctor as she builds strong personal bonds with each of her patients. However, she notes her best reward is having her patients cured and satisfied with the care she provides.
INSPIRED PROFESSIONALISM! Dr. Fernandez’s personal mantra is “Keep the patients first!” She has volunteered in institutions dedicated to the care of elderly and disabled children. Dr. Fernandez has excellent experience with diverse multi-ethnic patients. She and the Winter Garden team offer bilingual consultations and attention. Dr. Fernandez notes, “I was happy to join South Lake Gastroenterology to serve a growing community. I enjoy educating the community in healthier lifestyles to promote good digestive health. My best-kept secret is “to keep always in mind that to practice medicine is a privileged opportunity to serve others. I treat my patients as I would like my own family or myself to be treated when we are the patients. I am grateful also to provide care to the Hispanic community and communicate in their language to better understand their symptoms and disease challenges.”

If your eyes are bigger than your stomach, the local farmers’ markets can be a dangerous place! Fresh produce, interesting food items and other delicious goods are everywhere, and it’s easy to fill a few tote bags with everything your arms can carry. Even if you’re growing in your home garden, the sheer volume of delicious fruits and vegetables can be overwhelming, and you need to use it all up before any beautiful produce spoils. In our Local Farmer’s Market Dinner series this month, we adapt the ever-popular Tik-Tok Baked Tomato Feta Pasta. There is just something about fresh Garlic Chive Ziti pasta from Orlando
City Pasta with a thick velvety sauce with the sharpness of feta, cherry tomatoes, and garlic from the farmer’s market, that says wellness - Comfort Food Mental and Taste Bud Wellness! We paired tonight’s Farmer’s Market Dinner with ‘Duke’s Red’ from Hutchinson Farm Winery in Apopka. Duke’s Red was produced from grapes grown in their vineyards in Apopka and red juice from Chili. It was finished using French Oak to produce a huge Burgundian character and taste.A truly magnificent wine with full fruit taste and color attributed to the rich soils of Chile. Walking up the stairs of my apartment, I checked my phone. Finally, they were going to take the deal! I’d hit my business income goal for the year! Wow, I was finally successful. I looked down at the date: Dec. 29, 1997. I had made it! Feeling successful felt weird. I thought at first I would see fireworks or be so excited that someone would be compelled to throw me a party. Then I realized I had only three more days to feel like this before the pressure would start all over again. On Jan. 1, everything would start right back at zero. I felt so deflated. I put some steaks on the grill. As I watched the flames, I pondered what success really meant to me and whether I was truly successful. I realized that while I was successful in my business, the same wasn’t true in other areas of my life. I was out of shape, my marriage was not as great as I hoped it could be, I felt distanced from God, and I still did not have any really good friends in Orlando. A sinking feeling came over me as I realized while I might be successful in this one area, truthfully, I was failing in so many others. I became frustrated. Why was I equating success solely with my business and my income? What was going on inside of me that I was pulled so strongly to one area but not the others? Had I fallen prey to our culture’s definition of success? Or was this my definition by default?
REDEFINE YOUR SUCCESS I realized I had to define success for myself and not by what society sometimes views as success — what car I’m driving, what house I live in or what parties I’m attending. I examined my life and determined I had six roles. I was a: • Follower of Christ • Husband • Soon-to-be father • Friend • Sportsman • and Business Leader I took out a notepad and started writing down what each of these roles meant to me — and what needed to happen in these areas of my life to feel successful. I wanted to protect myself from just succeeding in one and failing in five others. I was excited because my intentional life was starting right there. When the steak was done, my excitement quickly started wearing off. Six areas of life! Six balls in the air at the same time. Man, it certainly was much easier to just focus on one area and let the rest go. But I was committed.
COMMIT TO YOUR GOALS The first six months felt overwhelming. At times I felt stuck in the mud. I set three goals in each of the six areas, so now I had 18 goals to focus on. Going from one to six and then to 18! I felt like a robot, moving mechanically from one goal to another. It takes time to accomplish a single goal. How would I tackle 18? Would it all happen in one year? I really wrestled with this concept. I searched for answers by reading books on the topic, and finally, by God’s grace, I was introduced to strategic thinkers and consultants who worked with executives and business leaders on personal life and organizational focus. I met

my mentor, Bobb Biehl, and others on my journey, and I started understanding much more about this process. Today, I approach goal-setting very differently. I believe in this process because I have seen tremendous growth in myself, my wife and clients who are implementing an intentional life.
PLAN FOR AN INTENTIONAL LIFE Here is what we do now: My wife and I start the year by writing out our one-year life plan. We include our six roles and what we want to accomplish during the year. We keep in mind this principle: Most people overestimate what they can accomplish in one year but underestimate what they can accomplish in three years. We think about the next three years, but we focus on what we are doing this year. The critical question each of us asks is: What three things do I need to focus on in the next 90 days that would make a 50% difference in the way I end this year? Narrow your focus to three goals in the next quarter, and work very hard at those. It might be a weight loss goal, a goal regarding your faith, or a goal for your marriage and family. You decide. You can focus hard on three items for 90 days! The momentum you build when you accomplish those three will give you the encouragement to pick the next three areas of focus for the next quarter. I apply this principle to my life and to my business. In business,
we call them WIGS (Wildly Important Goals), and in my personal life, I call these areas Focused Life Goals.
KEEP GOING When the quarter is over, if one or two of these goals are not completed, do not give up. Dig in your heels and remember you might simply have underestimated the time it takes to complete the goal. Or maybe you got caught up in worrying about what others think of your goals. Your goals are for you; don’t worry about whether you are impressing or disappointing anyone else. Be kind to yourself, make small improvements in this process and you will achieve those new year’s resolutions and experience more internal health and well-being. Nothing motivates like results in our own lives, losing 15 pounds, spending the extra time with family, improving your marriage, or, heck, even accomplishing an income goal. It really is the journey that matters the most and leads to a feeling of success in living an intentional life, realizing that you are not a victim and you are not failing. Don’t allow lies or past failures to tell you that you cannot be free or you cannot accomplish something. No, not anymore. You can do this. 2022 is your year! Here’s to freedom, embracing your journey and enjoying great health and well-being in 2022, my friends!

Odishoo notes, “Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine have been around for thousands of years and are recognized by the World Health Organization to treat a complete range of medical problems. Island Fin
PIECES OF HEALTHY GOODNESS
Poke
Island Fin Poke has exactly what you need to give your body only the freshest and tastiest meal. Located at “4750 The Grove Drive” in Windermere, this franchise has been open for a little over a year now and serves up Poke Bowls. If you haven’t had Poke yet, you are in for one of the most refreshing meals you’ve ever had. Poke essentially means “cut into pieces.” Poke bowls include a base such as white or brown rice or even spring mix. Then you can add any proteins you want; they offer several options to choose from, including spicy tuna, ahi tuna, salmon, shrimp, chicken, tofu, spam and even octopus! Once you’ve built your base and proteins, they offer over 25 toppings from pineapple, mango, cucumber to pickled vegetables and ginger, seaweed salad, and so much more. Finish your bowl with one of their famous sauces like the wasabi cream or togarashi sauce which gives it a good spicy kick for your tastebuds. They also offer a yummy Dole Whip dessert and occasionally mix it with flavors such as strawberry, orange, or passion fruit. This is a must-try for any dole whip lovers out there! They also carry Hawaiian Sun drinks, which can best be described as a “fresh juice in a can” drink. I would suggest the passion fruit flavor, but they also have several other options too. Everything at Island Fin Poke is gluten-free, made in-house and inspired directly by Hawaiian food. Their goal is to serve “incredible Hawaiian style poke in a cool-casual environment.” They definitely hit the mark each time with their high-quality food and incredible fresh taste in each bite. In addition, they have impeccable customer service and are extremely helpful for first-time Poke goers and regulars alike. So if you’re looking for something new to try and trying to stay on the healthier side of things, this may just be your new favorite spot to go. They are open for lunch or dinner, so you’re covered for almost any time of the day.

A COMMUNITY FORCE for well being ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LARRY H. OSKIN
Healthy West Orange was established in 2016 by the West Orange Healthcare District with the goal to make West Orange the healthiest community in the nation. HWO is 100% focused on improving health and wellness in West Orange County. Their grassroots movement is more than a slogan or marketing campaign. It has become a comprehensive community force of unified resources working together to create well-being with healthy lifestyles. From solving health challenges and creating new lifestyle opportunities to providing free health screenings at festivals, farmer’s markets, and community events with health education and inspiration, they are all about

engaging the community to build a positive mindset of health and happiness. Healthy West Orange began when the West Orange Healthcare District brought together community members, leaders, and subject matter experts to envision what the goal of being the “healthiest community in the nation” really entails. They decided to focus on three pillars which include eating well, staying active, and enjoying life. There was a lot of discussion around naming the movement, and some thought that ‘Healthy’ implied they had already arrived. In the end, it was agreed that there was something aspirational in boldly stating their end vision while defining themselves as Healthy West Orange.
HEALTHY WEST ORANGE takes pride in being active members of the local community who are working, living, and playing here in West Orange County. COO Lesa Boettcher notes, “We are inspired by the residents we see and engage with. Whether it’s the person who completed their first 5K run with us or the family who decided to cook a healthy, nutritious dinner together because of a recipe we shared. Our ability to inspire our community to have fun while working towards becoming the healthiest community in the nation provides our daily motivation.” SPECIAL HEALTHY WEST ORANGE SERVICES & EVENTS: HWO is quite special and unique. Lesa Boettcher shares, “We are a community force for well-being, focused on sharing information, education, tools, and supportive connections to help empower people to eat well, stay active, and enjoy life. We aren’t selling products or offering any single magic bullet to better health. Just look at our HUBB Resource Center.” They are actively involved with community outreach by participating in many local festivals and events. HUBB is where residents can connect directly with local service providers as an online 24/7/365 community resource with added telephone support four days a week. From education and fitness classes to food or affordable housing assistance, it’s like command central for comprehensively resourcing anything and everything for complete health and well-being here in West Orange County. HWO hosts four large virtual challenges every year, two 5Ks, a dance challenge and a splash challenge where residents can win prizes just by making healthy and fun choices for themselves and their families. In addition, they host partnered events with groups like the YMCA, Bloom, and Grow Garden Society and an annual Healthy Selfie photo and video campaign.

Leveraging her professional career experiences as a Disney Human Resource executive and early career business strategist, she works with the community and healthcare wellness stakeholders to build enduring collaborative relationships that support health and wellness. Swanson also leads the Foundation for a Healthier West Orange, established to ensure ongoing, sustainable support to make West Orange County the healthiest community in the nation.

Still, under construction, their new Healthy West Orange Buildingwill soon be open to the public. Their HUBB Resource Center is on the first floor and will be opening soon for appointments. This building will become a central location and epicenter for community engagement. Healthy West Orange is empowered by the Foundation for a Healthier West Orange, which invests in and champions initiatives that support community health and well-being. Besides Orlando Health and the Observer Media Group as Founding Champions, they have added many other great partners.

H E A LT H B E N E F I T S OF TEA Tea is the world’s second most popular drink, after water. However, drinking tea has many health benefits. Here’s how a daily cup (or two!) can be good for you, along with healthy teas you should try. We sat down with Sunita “Suni” Maharaj, Owner and Founder of AntiquiTEAs, located in The Plant Street Market, to talk about her selection of teas and the health benefits of each.
Coming from an entrepreneurial Trinidadian family, Suni decided to leave college, studying architecture, to open AntiquiTEAs in March of 2019 and embarked on a journey to learn as much about tea production and brewing as she could. Interestingly enough, when she is not traveling looking for new teas, working the counter at AntiquiTEAs, or hosting Tea Parties, Suni is the bassist in the punk-metal CONTINUED >

“Tea can be a tasty beverage any time of day since it can be served iced or hot. But its benefits go far beyond refreshment, and there is plenty of research showing that drinking tea can actually improve your health” band ‘Lies Behind Your Eyes’ (@LiesBehindYourEyes) and also loves to play swamp-rock / blues as well. “Tea can be a tasty beverage any time of day since it can be served iced or hot. But its benefits go far beyond refreshment, and there is plenty of research showing that drinking tea can actually improve your health”, shared Suni. A recent study involved more than 100,000 adults in China and found that those who regularly drank tea were less likely to develop atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease or die prematurely from any cause — particularly stroke — than others during a seven-year follow-up. The link was solid among habitual tea drinkers — those who enjoyed the beverage at least three times a week. In addition, green tea seemed to have a stronger effect than black tea. Other studies have shown teas can help protect your teeth and your heart, as well as possibly even helping to stave off cancer. At the very least, drinking tea is a flavorful way of getting enough fluid into your body each day. “Tea, especially green tea, is a rich source of flavonoids, bioactive compounds that can lessen oxidative stress, relieve inflammation, and provide other health benefits,” Suni continued. Which type you drink can make a difference. “We tend to call anything we infuse in hot water tea, but specifically, All non-herbal teas are made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, indigenous to China and India. The amount of time the leaves are processed determines whether you end up with a green, black or oolong tea. The green teas are the least processed and tend to have the highest amounts of polyphenols, and the only type that contains the polyphenol, catechin, which is why many studies have been done using only green teas. In addition, certain herbal teas are known for their medicinal values, including soothing the digestive system.”
BLACK TEA Black teas are fully oxidized and range from 40-60 milligrams of caffeine per 8oz cup. The origin of black tea is China, India, and Sri Lanka, but is now also produced in Nepal, Turkey, Indonesia, Kenya, and Australia. After the leaves are plucked, they are given time to wither, then rolled or crushed by hand or machine. This activates the oxidation process, and the leaves turn black, then they are fired in ovens to stop the oxidation process. BENEFITS: Black tea contains flavonoids that reduce inflammation, lowers cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and improves gut health and overall immunity.
38
T R E N D SE T T E R | WEL L NE S S
GREEN TEA Green tea is heated immediately after plucking. This maintains the leaf’s colors, tannins, vitamin C, chlorophyll, and minerals. In addition, the heat stops the leaf from withering or oxidizing. The lack of oxidation is responsible for its low caffeine content. Chinese green teas contain about 30-35 milligrams of caffeine per 8oz cup, while Japanese green teas contain about 25-30 milligrams of caffeine per cup. Green tea is traditionally from China and Japan. BENEFITS: Green tea has an exceptional level of flavonoids that can boost your health by lowering bloodpressure, bad cholesterol, reducing blood clots, and triglycerides.
OOLONG TEA Some like to say oolong is the cousin of green tea and black tea because they have the complexity of black tea and the freshness of green tea. Oolong is a semi-oxidized tea; the caffeine content and antioxidant level are also between green and black tea, making it the healthiest tea. Starting at 30-50 milligrams in the first cup, 15-25 milligrams in the second cup, and 5-10 milligrams in the third cup. Yes, you can steep the same tea leaves more than one time. After you’re done with the tea leaves, feel free to toss them in your garden to provide for your other growing plants. Oolong traditionally comes from Taiwan and China. BENEFITS: Oolong tea contains a high amount of polyphenols, lowering inflammation, reducing type two diabetes risk, and preventing the growth of cancers. Oolong contains I-theanine and amino acid that reduces anxiety and increases alertness and focus. Regardless of the tea you choose, each has a preferred temperature and brew time to ensure the best flavor. “Even a few extra seconds or degrees can make the difference between a great cup of tea or a bitter one. I encourage folks to stop by, and I’m happy to talk tea and give them details on the health benefits of our teas and brew a great cup, or two, of tea at home!” Suni added. You can purchase teas, beverages and loose-leaf, from AntiquiTEAs in The Plant Street Market (opposite end from Crooked Can Brewery at 426 W Plant St, Winter Garden, FL 34787) or via https://AntiquiTeasOnline.com. Also, check them out on Facebook at @AntiquiTEAsFlorida and Instagram at @AntiquiTEAs).
