June is the month that we celebrate the men in our lives. Though I may not have grown up with a Father, I grew up with one of my favorite humans that ever lived, my Grandpa. He was the kindest, strongest, hardest worker I ever met, and the reason I never gave up on a good man. Though I only met my husband a little over 3 years ago at the age of 46, Cory Benson is my favorite person in the world and the picture I share with all of you is from our Launch Party/Ribbon Cutting in April. As a little girl, I would hold my Grandpa's hand while we took long walks and I never stopped even as an adult. He taught me the love for cards, taking long walks, hard work pays off and always being kind. I love him dearly and even though he passed in my late 20s, he is forever with me and I feel his presence often.
This issue has several stories of men that help make this community what it is. Each and every one of them have a fantastic story to share and I look forward to you reading each page with a smile on your face. In one of our stories you will meet some great men that all grew up in Windsor, graduated from Windsor High School, and still call this beautiful place home today. If that is not a testimony to the amazing place we all call home, I don't know what is. One story is dedicated to a friend to many in Windsor that we lost too soon, but the lesson he left for us is to live without judgment and love one another each day.
The men in our lives play a crucial role in shaping who we are and who we become. They provide us with love, support, and guidance, and they inspire us to be better people. Let's take a moment to appreciate the wonderful men in our lives and celebrate the positive impact they have on us.

Once in a while, we are blessed with a person who makes our lives brighter and more enjoyable. A person who makes us feel like we've known them our whole lives. That person was Stephen Courteney Couch or "Couchy" to most, a friend and brother to many but who left us too soon.
Born to Gene and Shirley Couch of Salida Colorado, Couchy attended Salida High School and then attended Fort Lewis College in Durango where he played football. After completing school in Durango, Couchy lived in Arvada for a short time before moving up
to Northern Colorado where he had settled over the past 18 years working in the mortgage industry.
Couchy was a valued member at Pelican Lakes and a resident of Water Valley. Many knew Stephen as a staple at the Sandbar, where he spent many evenings and weekends making friends with members, new and old. He never knew a stranger.
He was one of those people who never seemed to take life too seriously. He loved all sports, however, he loved being on the golf course, and he always did it in his flip-flops.
ARTICLE BY TEAM BENSON, BEAU & DAWN COUCH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATT COOKRain or shine, he was out there on the course, laughing and joking with his friends, giving himself pep talks on the golf course to ‘Be an Athlete’, and reminding us all to have a little more fun in our lives.
Despite never having kids of his own, one of his greatest joys in life was his nieces and nephews. He would spend countless hours searching for the perfect gifts, patched together with rolls of scotch tape. His generosity knew no bounds. If you had a child at Pelican Lakes, he would keep their hands full with ice cream cones, intrigue them with his magic tricks and from time to time his teeth – if you know, you know. If you spent any time in the sandbar, you were sure to be offered a ‘Couchy’, a drink named specifically after him, as that is what he loved to drink. Whether it was a stranger or a friend, he treated everyone with the same kindness and respect.
Couchy was someone who knew the importance of living life to the fullest. He embraced every moment with enthusiasm and never took anything for granted. He was authentic, a man on his own journey, never apologetic, always reaching out with a warm hand, and curious about people. He had the incredible ability to bring people together. He had a way of connecting with everyone he met, and his infectious energy and positivity had a ripple effect on those around him.
As we reflect on Couchy's life, we can all strive to "love like Couchy" by living with an open heart and embracing every moment with enthusiasm. We can strive to be a light in the lives of those around us, spreading positivity and joy wherever we go. We
can work to connect with others, building meaningful relationships and creating a sense of community wherever we are. One of his dear friends asked several people, "If you could describe Couchy in one word, what would that word be? The words that were used were unapologetic, positive, welcoming, nonjudgemental, inviting, kind, entertaining, electric, dynamic, loveable, charismatic, joyous, and many more. Several people reached out to the family to let them know how he touched their lives and one person wrote a long letter sharing that if it would not have been for him she would not be the person she is today, because of the way he stuck up for her in school. She was bullied and he was there to help her believe in herself over and over again. They stayed in contact for many years.
Most importantly, we can honor Couchy's memory by cherishing the time we have with our loved ones and never taking a single moment for granted. We can embrace life with the same enthusiasm and zest that Couchy did, living each day to the fullest and making the most of every opportunity.
To his family "Be More like Couchy" means embracing life with open arms. It means not being afraid to take risks or try new things. It means being true to yourself, even if it means standing out from the crowd. And it means finding joy in the little things, like playing golf in flip flops, or greeting your friends with ‘Chief’. So here's to you Couchy. Thank you for making so many lives brighter and more enjoyable. Thank you for reminding us that life is short and that we should make the most of every moment. We’re keeping our flip-flops on for you, Chief.
“Don’t worry about me, this is my journey.”

Windsor residents and business owners of HOMESMITH, LLC, Tyler and Kimberly Stein, were recently able to be contestants on the reality TV show called “The Blox”. Although the Stein’s can’t say who won the season eight series that just finished filming, they can say the experience was invaluable. That experience opened them to several new strategies and business ideas that they are implementing to help them become more successful with newfound enthusiasm and confidence.
“The Blox'' reality TV show brings together seventy different businesses that compete in entrepreneurial techniques and is hosted by actor and reality star Wes Bergmann.
For Tyler and Kimberly, the journey to “The Blox” began when Tyler was a young boy influenced partially by his father, who was an engineer. Tyler witnessed him complete construction projects with multiple materials growing up. Another mentor he shared, specifically to residential construction was his high school Home Construction teacher Bob, who opened his eyes to strategies, methods, and the pleasure of home construction that helped him realize he wanted to pursue it further and follow his love for building.
HOMESMITH, LLC was born out of necessity, but it was always a seed growing roots in the background of Tyler's Life. Having been in the general contracting industry for over 25 years, both Tyler and his wife Kimberly were raised in general contracting homes and backgrounds, making it something that aligns with the core of who they are. When deciding to go all in on their dreams, they both felt excited and enthusiastic knowing it was a natural path for them to walk. Their passion and goals are to help homeowner’s renovation dreams come true, to live comfortably in their own space.
For Tyler and Kimberly, being part of “The Blox” has helped them grow professionally. They love the creative challenges that come with each new project, and they're grateful for the opportunity to showcase their skills and passion for construction on a national stage.
So if you're a fan of entrepreneurial reality shows, be sure to check out “The Blox” and follow Tyler and Kimberly’s journey. “The Blox” season 8 will be aired in about 7 months (look for it in fall or winter of this year) on Facebook TV and on the App called “The Blox”.
John Taylor’s career has been an impressive evolution that began in Texas and led him here, to his home in Windsor. His residential real estate career began a little over 6 years ago but his experience in business and the knowledge he has gained from his journey, offer him a unique perspective and opportunity to help others. From commercial real estate to a background in Fortune 500 banking and even owning an energy land company, John Taylor has reinvented himself and succeeded in multiple pursuits throughout his career. His favorite part of being involved in real estate is being able to witness helping people achieve their goals. “Having done a lot of things, one thing I really love about real estate is you can see the tangible benefits of helping people and you can see first-hand how you have made a difference in someone’s life and you can see that everywhere you go.” shared John.
John has always been driven to succeed. Starting from a young age, he was able to witness his father’s evolution in becoming a successful
business leader and building a solid reputation on his word. Through that relationship with his father, he learned the value of mentorship, having a trusted council, and what being honorable and decent meant to him. He witnessed how his father’s example helped others and he is proud to have received his father's name. The wisdom his father shared with him, on standing by your word and letting your name carry the weight of your character, has become a north star in John’s life, along with the simple advice, “Do what you say you are going to do.”
Finding a happy work-life balance and creating experiences has been a large part of his story. John loves to travel and appreciates the differences in the little things which complements his interest in architecture and landscapes. He has a passion and keen eye for photography and loves capturing unique moments and memories from his travels. He enjoys taking in different places and cultures and all that can be learned from the world. John and his significant other Kim love mixing adventure and history into their travels, helping them gain different perspectives from across the globe.
Aside from experiencing different cultures and landscapes, John prides himself on being a good role model and providing guidance to all he surrounds himself with. Mentorship is a large part of who John is and he has surrounded himself with people he considers mentors, as well as friends that he hopes to share his gift of wisdom and knowledge with. Excited to give back to his boutique team at Taylor Home Partners and mentor other young people to help them be successful is something that fills his cup and gives him a great sense of joy. “Your goal as a mentor is to try and help people gain clarity, to give
them insight by sharing. So, I like to give people the benefit of my insight as to what my truth has been and how I’ve gotten here, the mistakes I have made, and what has worked for me” shares John. Carrying on his father’s legacy, John is leaving his footprint in the hearts and minds of the community through genuine interactions and authentic kindness. He is at a place in his life where he doesn’t feel like he has anything left to prove but he does feel like he still has a lot to give.
In today's fast-paced and demanding work environment, neglecting personal well-being and professional growth is easy, however, John Taylor's approach to work-life balance and mentorship serves as a reminder that success can be achieved through prioritizing what matters most and supporting others along the way.
Growing up just outside of Windsor on his family’s dairy farm, Jeff Hertzke absorbed a strong work ethic at a young age. Witnessing his parents and their dedication to providing for not only their family but their employees as well, instilled in him a motivation to provide for others the way he was provided for growing up. His parents offered him and his siblings the opportunity to be able to do good in school, excel in sports, and learn responsibility. This is something he hopes to have passed on to his children as well.
Attending Windsor schools since the first grade, Jeff has been a part of this community since he was a boy. One piece of advice that he received early on in his career was “Lead by example and don’t be afraid to do the little things.” Jeff has carried that knowledge with him throughout his career, and he applies that to every aspect in his life. His work ethic and drive have helped move him to where he wanted to be, and he has become more involved within his community. Serving on multiple community foundation boards for the school districts, Jeff enjoys being able to help offer even more opportunities to the families and students of Windsor. His foundation helped shape the man he has become, and he is grateful to be able to give back and help watch the community that made him become even better. Keeping honesty at his core, Jeff believes in taking things one day at time, and being an overall kind and good person.
Growing up in agriculture and farming just outside of Windsor, Martin Lind never dreamed he would become a developer in this area. Taking what he learned from his youth in agriculture has helped him stand apart and make great strides in both business and community relationships. Using common sense as a guiding factor, the team he has created strives to put community first in all their decisions. Making sure their projects are tangible and stand on their own merit to create amenities that bring joy to both his team and to Northern Colorado alike. Being involved as a community member and leader has helped drive and motivate Martin to bring new opportunities focused on keeping Windsor’s “small town charm” at the heart of all they do.
His core faith in Christ has helped carry him through tough times and kept him knowing that tomorrow is going to be okay no matter how bad today may have been. That same faith has helped him lift others and support them on their path. Family is at the center of Martin’s world. As a fourth generation Windsor native, his roots run deep and the family tree is expanding. He believes in leading by example and instilling in his family a legacy of faith, optimism, common sense, and a strong work ethic.
Being entrenched in the community is something Martin hopes to continue going forward and for his family to emulate. He encourages everyone to find what they love and to do their best every day at it, and the Lord will do the rest.
Growing up in Windsor, Tyler has always appreciated the comradery and hometown feeling that you get from being centered here. Coming from a northern Colorado family, Tyler was the first to earn a four-year degree, attending UNC for his undergrad in business management. Through internships in the early part of his career, Tyler was able to work in project management and business development roles for some big companies and found his niche in relationships and business development. He rose through the ranks to C-level officer roles and has been named “40 under 40” and achieved multiple forms of recognition for his accomplishments. Grateful to still be in the community, he enjoys that “salt of the earth” small town feel and how Windsor has stayed true to its roots even during its evolution in the last 25 years.
Family is and always has been a large part of Tyler’s world. “Success is not wealth, it’s not extrinsic value, but it is defined by the happiness and the well-being of my loved ones and family” he states. One of his biggest inspirations in life is his wife, Rachelle. “She is constantly there for the ones she loves, is a wonderful mother to our children, a friend to all who know her, and she even finds time to go back to school to work on her goals. Her attitude about life and her support are two things that mean the world to me” shares Tyler. Family is the reason he pushes harder for his goals and through adversity, to try to provide better for those that surround him.
Smith Chief Sales & Marketing Officer“Success is not wealth, it’s not extrinsic value, but it is defined by the happiness and the well-being of my loved ones and family” — Tyler SmithSean Pike Owner of Pikes Auto Care
Born and raised Windsor native Sean Pike comes from a long line of businessmen. Growing up, he was inspired by his family to work hard and set the bar high, coming from a place where your word and a handshake were how business was conducted. After graduating from Windsor, Sean attended business school and began his journey as an entrepreneur starting several businesses across multiple industries, including Pikes.
Sean learned from his father to eat, sleep, and breath your business and to really be a part of it. Honesty and integrity are two things engrained in the fiber of who he is and how he conducts himself. He believes in taking care of the people around him, knowing that you can’t do it all alone and that his team is a big part of what makes things happen. “If you use kindness, honesty, integrity, and hard work, those things are the combination for success in my mind and that is what I was taught and that applies to all aspects of life in general” shares Sean.
Being an extreme athlete, he finds that exercise and prayer help him manage any difficulties or stressors that life can bring. Sean has always been driven and he genuinely believes in surrounding himself with the best people possible. Knowing that he has humans he respects and appreciates to bounce things off of and to help keep him positive and accountable, is something he holds in high esteem. Leading by example, and with love, Sean strives to continue to learn and grow and help the community around him to do the same.
Erich Ehrlich has been involved in the Windsor community from a young age, being student body president in high school and sitting on accountability committees through the school district were a pre curser or a bridge to the involvement he would have later. Dating back to 1903, his family’s roots have been planted here, making him a 3rd generation business owner in this area. Growing up in a rural setting centered around family and work ethic, he attributes those learning experiences to his dedication, tenacity, and character.
After graduating college, Erich returned to Windsor to begin his insurance career and has been intertwined within the community on numerous fronts ever since. He has served on the Windsor Chamber, school boards, been a part of the school booster clubs, united way, and was also a middle school football coach for 16 years; just
to name a few. His involvement in these activities have helped him understand what community really represents and have added to the spice of his life.
Instilled with a burning desire to reach his goals, Erich measures those goals in years not days and tries not to get caught up on the small and short-term things. He highlights that challenges and failures do not mean you aren’t doing anything good and that we can learn from every set back if we choose to, stating that balance is the key. He chooses to define success by doing the best he can each day, thanking the lord each night, and helping others along his journey; which is something we could all do more of.
One of his favorite quotes, “Work Eight hours and sleep Eight hours, and make sure that they are not the same eight hours” — T.Boon Pickens.
To say Windsor native Clay Drake is inspiring would be an understatement. His story, his outlook, and his faith are a pillar of strength, even during the most difficult of life’s seasons. Witnessing his parent’s work ethic and drive helped fuel his internal motivation from a young age, learning that you can always find your way through the hardest of times. He has learned to keep an open mind in life, and to lean into the hard things knowing they will bring the most fulfillment. With an impressive career in numerous fields, Clay now focuses on the business he and his wife own, and his time with his family.
His journey, and really his story, changed around 8 years ago in 2015, when he was diagnosed with cancer. Despite his illness and the challenges he faces daily, Clay feels he has been given a chance to approach life differently, and to be intentionally present with the people he loves. “I think the biggest thing that changed in me is that out of something bad came something good and that’s the lesson there. Bad things will happen to you, but you have a choice about whether you stay positive or choose to focus on the negative. Accepting the hard things only makes us appreciate the good more” he shares.
Being an already very faith-based man, Clay has found that his relationship with God has deepened even further during this chapter of his life, and he finds great joy in that growth. Discovering that his definition of success has changed, he sees the abundance all around him and the grace of God everywhere. His attitude and outlook are contagious, and his light is a beacon of truth. Clay sets an example for us all not to judge, to make others feel loved, to learn from one another in moments of opposition, to always speak your truth and love for others, and to see the good even through the bad.
