As we approach a wonderful time of the year, I couldn't be more excited to share the holiday spirit with our incredible community. This year, we have some fantastic local traditions to introduce and celebrate that will make this holiday season in Windsor truly special. Check out our events calendar as well! There is so much to do in Windsor this time of year and really every month! One of the highlights of this season is the introduction of Hoedown Hill, hopefully our community's new holiday tradition. Located on the outskirts of Windsor, Hoedown Hill is a place where families and friends can come together to celebrate the joy of the season. Another cherished tradition for many families is a Cookie Exchange. We even share a recipe. This is an opportunity to strengthen bonds and create cherished memories that will last a lifetime. We are also touching upon mental health. While the holiday season is a time of joy and celebration, it can also be a challenging period for many. We chose 3 local partners to talk to us about this sensitive subject and we encourage you to reach out to your friends and neighbors, support one another, and remember that it's okay to ask for help if you need it. Community is about more than just celebrating together; it's about being there for one another. This holiday season, let's make an effort to prioritize mental health and be there for those who may be struggling. A little empathy and kindness can go a long way in brightening someone's holiday. I am thrilled to be part of this warm and welcoming community. As we celebrate our new tradition at Hoedown Hill, cherish the joy of a Family Cookie Exchange, and extend a hand of support for one another's mental well-being, let us remember that the true spirit of the holidays lies in our shared experiences and connections. Wishing you and your loved ones a festive, heartwarming, and safe holiday season in beautiful Windsor!

Traditions, especially during the holidays are often some of the things that create lasting memories, showing us that the seemingly small things sometimes carry the most weight. Passed down from generation to generation, these traditions create a ripple effect and become cherished memories and activities with enhanced meaning. Much like Mamaw’s green chili recipe, Papaw’s advice for aiming your bow, or a handmade quilt; they offer a comfort in home, connection, and a sense of belonging that we so often find peace and solace in. One such tradition for the Chapmon family is baking. Baking has long been a holiday tradition for their family for as far back as they can remember, from their Mamaw in her eighties to her teenage granddaughters. Every holiday, no matter how small, features an abundance of desserts and treats big enough to rival the main course full meal. To them, baking, cooking, and sharing food is a way to express their love and enhance the quality time spent together. Focused on baking, every season they organize an annual cookie exchange. Varying from year to year, it can encompass a whole day of baking cookies together, decorating sugar or gingerbread cookies, or sometimes it includes a little bit of both. Typically, each family member will make 2-4 types of cookies, brownies, or truffles and one big batch of cut-out sugar cookies. They set a date and time and spend one whole day together decorating all the sugar cookies. Their aim is to make this day about laughter, creating, and spending quality time with the ones they love the most. They then put together cookie boxes with a mix of all the cookies each family member brought and baked to share, coupled with the sugar cookies they decorated together. Baked, decorated, and boxed with love and community, they then share the treats with their families, friends, co-workers, and neighbors. The focus for this event, centered around quality time, is characteristic of how they approach life, celebration, and family. CONTINUED >

C H O C O L AT E PEPPERMINT COOKIES INGREDIENTS • 1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour, (scoop and level to measure) • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (scoop and level to measure) • 1 tsp baking soda • 1/2 tsp salt • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened about halfway (It should be fairly firm still) • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar • 2 large eggs • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 1 tsp peppermint extract • 16 oz. white chocolate, broken or chopped • 1/4 cup finely crushed peppermint bits

Finding the traditions in even the small things can ground us, bring us back to our center, and remind us of where we come from. We learn to focus on the things that really matter to us and as we head into the holiday season, we pray you will aim at creating memories in all the moments you’re offered, being present with the ones you love, and viewing those traditions as something special to be revered.

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheets with silicone liners or parchment paper. 2. In a medium mixing bowl whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt for 20 seconds. Set aside. 3. In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment cream together butter, granulated sugar and brown sugar until well combined. 4. Mix in eggs one at a time then blend in vanilla extract and peppermint extract. 5. With mixer set on low speed slowly add in flour mixture and mix just until combined. 6. Scoop dough out by a rounded tablespoon (about 25 grams each) and shape into balls (if dough is sticky, you can chill as needed but mine wasn’t sticky at all). 7. Space on cookie sheets 2 inches apart. Flatten cookies slightly. 8. Bake one sheet at a time in preheated oven about 8 minutes (cookies should appear slightly under-baked). 9. Let cool on baking sheet several minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool 5 minutes then transfer to an airtight container to fully cool. 10. Once cookies are cool, melt white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl on 50% power in 30 second increments, stirring between intervals until melted and smooth. 11. Dip half of each cookie in white chocolate then transfer to parchment paper and sprinkle with peppermint bits. Chill to let chocolate set about 10 minutes. 12. Store cookies in an airtight container.

HOEDOWN HILL Northern Colorado’s Own Winter Wonderland

As a child growing up in a Northern Colorado farming family, there were very limited opportunities for recreation, let alone expensive recreation, like trips to the mountains for skiing. There was at one time, a smaller local resort or ski hill just outside of Greeley Colorado that ran from 1971-1986 called Sharktooth Ski Area, Water Valley owner Martin Lind recalls his experience there “It was just a guy and his vision to build a little ski hill there and it had the right northeast slope topography on the Poudre river and as a kid, I remember getting to go over there and the lift tickets were like a dollar a day and it had a little tow rope to take you back to the top and it was a fun childhood memory and so I always envisioned someday building a sophisticated one of those.” True to his imagination and that distinct childhood memory, that idea transformed within Martin. Having always visualized a place for a ski hill within his company’s developments, they gave it a trial run last year to investigate the project's potential. With technology having grown leaps and bounds over the last four decades, Martin and his team tested out the idea last season and the equipment worked perfectly. With his vision in hand, the team committed to the project

and used the knowledge from last season to focus on what they wanted to bring to life within Hoedown Hill. Building onto and expanding the development for the last 12 months very intensely, the Water Valley team is bringing a winter wonderland to life for everyone. Hoping to open, weather dependent, around either Thanksgiving or near the middle of December 2023, Hoedown Hill will offer more than just a tubing experience. It is aimed at the goal of providing affordable family entertainment for all of Northern Colorado, saving money on travel and drive time to enable quality time for families to spend together. brings an authentic experience to the front range. In the winter months, the hill offers attendees several outdoor activities including tubing, skiing, and snowboarding. Transitioning in the spring and summer months, the hill will also have mountain biking, hiking, and ziplining, bringing year-round outdoor fun for the whole family. The unique layout also boasts a venue for year-round concerts and features the resort's very own restaurant, The GrainHouse, which includes a full bar and an elevated menu. The hill will also be lit in order to offer nighttime skiing, full-service ski and snowboard rentals on-site, outdoor fire pits, activity areas, and more. As part of the hill’s elevated appeal, all the equipment and terrain are top-of-the-line. The lifts themselves, are nicknamed “magic carpets” and they feature a conveyor system that attendees can step onto and ride back up the hill. Lit and enclosed, the lifts offer riders a comfortable break from the elements as they head back up to the top of the hill. With a three-foot snowpack and groomed runs, the snowmaking system is state-of-the-art thanks to their collaboration with CHS snowmakers. The hill will also have two terrain parks designed by Effective Edge, that include over 20 features that will change on a weekly basis giving an ever-changing experience for parkgoers. With a variety of terrain, the resort will have beginner, intermediate, and advanced runs with at least 4-5 black diamonds. Operating hours will offer after-work time for families through the week with varied times between 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. or 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday through Monday with the ski area closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. When we think of the holidays, often the first images that come to mind are centered around happiness and activities that are for the most part positive; decorating the tree, family gatherings, holiday parties, baking, and all the small traditions that are unique to each individual person’s experience. What we often don’t always associate with this time of year, but is just as prevalent is grief, anxiety, triggers, a sense of heaviness in our emotions, and an aura of loneliness. Oftentimes the stigma of what you are supposed to feel, think, do, or behave like keeps us from discussing these subjects for what they are, a normal part of life and especially of the human experience. And if we are legitimately honest with ourselves, these are things that we all experience at some point in our journeys in some capacity.

Because no two people are the same, everyone will have different perspectives on grief, events, healing, and even everyday occurrences based on their history, life experiences and views. Each person’s obstacles or triggers are unique to their autobiography and journey. There is no one-size-fits-all, or one right way to feel, think, or behave, yet we find there is still a stigma attached to this discussion, a division, and a fear of judgment that keeps us from talking about it openly and honestly. Mental health has become much more of a mainstream topic than it used to be in the last few decades and yet, it is still somewhat of a subject that gets brushed under the rug and kept at arm’s length. We ask how people are, but life gets in the way, distracting us from really listening. Sometimes we hesitate to dig into deeper conversations because CONTINUED >

we don't want to pry. But the truth is, when people are struggling, it can be difficult to take the first step and be vulnerable. For many, this feels like opening the door to judgment. As we sat down with some of the leaders in Windsor’s mental health community to discuss a subject that is most often undesired, we found that one of the biggest obstacles is to remove the wrapping mental health is so often covered in and #makeitweird. A sort of unofficial, official term coined by The Mermaid Alliance (a non-profit aimed at bringing attention to suicide prevention and awareness in Northern Colorado), sums up perfectly the sentiments within the mental health community. Sitting down with some of the leaders from North Range Behavioral Health, IOME, and Mermaid Alliance, our aim was to open the curtain and shine a brighter light on a subject that is so often kept in the dark. There are people who care, places to seek guidance, and most importantly there is help. The mental health journey is one focused not on fixing one another or ourselves, or even on solving a problem but more about showing up with grace, witnessing, and finding a path through the pain towards healing. So often we do not get to choose what happens to us in life, but we are able to decide how we want to respond and how we choose to heal and move forward. Knowing that we don’t have to face those struggles alone, makes the burden lessened just by being able to share and know that we are witnessed. There are many pressures today that didn’t exist even 10 years ago, but just as we evaluate what we consume in our diets, it is equally important to evaluate what we consume mentally and emotionally in our daily lives as well. Evaluating what we absorb into our mental space and taking care of ourselves is paramount in our health, mentally and physically. Ask yourself daily, What am I in need of, reach out to others if you feel they are off, even if it feels like being invasive, dig in and bear witness. We as a family here at Windsor City Lifestyle, along with IOME, The Mermaid Alliance, and North Range Behavioral Health encourage everyone to have those conversations that you feel may be taboo, check in on one another, really listen, remove judgment of yourself and others, and know that there are resources available to you within your community, no matter what the crisis you may be experiencing looks like, you do not have to face it alone. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds.
