IT’S A COMMON PHRASE MEANING THAT OUR HOMES ARE A CENTRAL PLACE IN OUR LIVES WHERE WE MAKE FOND MEMORIES WITH LOVED ONES. Our homes are the epicenter of our worlds, where we start and end each day, and where we keep our most prized possessions. This month, we bring you our Home Issue, which is full of ideas for creating the best environment wherever you call home. In this issue, we take a look at some of Westport’s unique architecture and hear about housing trends from Peter Cadoux of Peter Cadoux Architects. We’re sure you’ll swoon over the beautiful homes he designs. With springtime upon us, there’s no better time for a little home refresh project! For inspiration, we met with interior designer Grace Rosenstein, master home painter Dario Felix of Regal Line Painting and Marcelo Fernandez from Design Within Reach Westport for their expert advice on different ways to style all aspects of your homes from the inside out.

luxurious things in our community, but we felt it important to highlight this wonderful organization that keeps Westporters on their feet when times are tough. We hope this issue inspires you to appreciate the place you call home—both your personal dwelling and our shared community—whether you’ve just moved or it’s a place your family has occupied for generations. Here’s to home sweet home!

"My favorite part of a new job is when I start seeing colors. That’s when everything starts coming together for me."

PAINT YOUR DREAMS TO LIFE Spring is on the horizon, and if you’re looking to refresh your home, look no further than Dário Félix of Regal Line Painting. Whether you're focused on the interior or exterior of your home, Dário’s precision and dedication to his craft is unparalleled. Dário opened Regal Line Painting 13 years ago. For him, the work is personal. “My favorite part of a new job is when I start seeing colors. That’s when everything starts coming together for me. I get excited to see the client’s reaction—the satisfaction and pride on their face when they see their vision brought to life. It becomes personal to me. There’s nothing more satisfying than knowing you’ve met your client’s expectations,” he says. It doesn’t take much more than a quick scroll through Regal Line Painting’s reviews to know he’s not one to only meet expectations but greatly exceed them.

Serving Westport and the surrounding communities

If painting homes weren’t enough, Dário is also an acclaimed artist. His artwork has been featured in New York, San Fransisco and at Art Basel in Miami. When he finishes a home painting job, he gifts each client with a custom work of art utilizing the project’s unique color palette; his own personal "thank-you" or

A Cadoux home on .38 acres, 3,300 square feet

O, What Cadoux Can Do! AT PETER CADOUX ARCHITECTS (PCA), CADOUX’S CADEAUX IS KEEPING EVERYTHING SMALL, EXCEPT HIS IMAGINATION—AND HIS HEIGHT

ARTICLE ROBIN MOYER CHUNG | PHOTOGRAPHY WARREN JAGGER

A PCA HOME IS LIKE A JEWELRY BOX: A BEAUTIFULLY APPOINTED STRUCTURE THAT EFFICIENTLY CONTAINS ALL OF ONE'S VALUABLES. It makes one want to peek inside to see the entirety of the house and its rarefied inhabitants. And, of course, hope their kitchen is as messy as our own. Peter Cadoux, a Westport resident since 1976, and his wife, Sally, live in Westport with their three kids; their cat, Tigger; and their dog, Jazzie (the unofficial PCA mascot.) Peter’s downtown office of more than 20 years is a quaint antique building humbly sandwiched between a parking lot and a vacant fish store. The point is to make people feel at ease and not overwhelmed by the spectacular photos of his multimilliondollar seaside enclaves. Yet, though his coastal manses may reduce the most hardcore of ascetics to salivating avarice, Peter contends, “The challenge, the journey, the magic is in the smaller package. With thoughtful design, we can achieve the same feeling of space in a smaller box.” “In 2009, people wanted big houses. But they weren’t prepared for the upkeep. Now the trend is no wasted space.” And style is never compromised, only enhanced. Large windows and lofty ceilings afford light and air, lending the home the spaciousness of a larger house. Other tricks include high-gloss paint and decorative windows so sunshine bounces around each room, and sliding glass panels inside of walls to create different room configurations as needed. To maximize efficiency and mitigate maintenance, he and his staff sleuth out every possible element of each home, from toilet paper bars to pipes, before a shovel hits dirt. 24

O, WHAT CADOUX CAN DO!

(CON TI N U ED)

“We find materials that look like authentic wood, but never rot,” he says. Still, despite his proclivity for practical, I had to ask: what’s the most spectacular thing a PCA client has requested? He

“In 2009, people wanted big houses. But

and his assistant, Caroline, immediately

they weren’t prepared for the upkeep.

those exist beyond high school physics,

Now the trend is no wasted space.”

responded: a Foucault’s pendulum! Yes, and seemingly only one person in modern American society creates them. So Peter tracked down the artisan, and Foucault’s spirit is gloriously swinging from a celestial ceiling pricked with 24,000 pinpoint lights, a shooting star and each phase of the moon. “You can watch it for two hours before it cycles into the beginning again,” Peter says.  And after enjoying the interplanetary interplay, viewers can enjoy a cocktail in the Cadoux-designed tiki bar. Seriously. But wait, there’s more: Chihuly! Peter convinced the renowned glass master to create a sculpture for his client, one of only two or three blown for domestic display. Chihuly himself blew into town to install his swirling riot of royal blue glass which lords over the client’s dining room table to awe-inspiring effect. But does the fabulous stuff make Peter untouchable? Nah. “People look at me and think ‘Oh, he’s too big for that,’  however, often a well done smaller house that still meets the owner's program focusing more on usable and livable space is far more exciting and challenging.  Even a new kitchen in an existing house should include consideration for design improvements that can be resolved within the design focus simply and efficiently.” Fair enough, but it’s still fun to dream.

GIVING BACK

HOMES IS WHERE THE HEART IS

GIVING WESTPORT'S HOMELESS RESIDENTS THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF HOPE

REMEMBER PETER CADOUX FROM A FEW PAGES BACK? He used to judge the popular

Annual Castles in the Sand Benefit for Homes with Hope. Homes with Hope, as you may know, is Westport’s homeless shelter. You may not know that it’s one of only three suburban homeless shelters in the United States  and that every bed has been filled every night since 1989. The Gillespie Center downtown is one of four emergency shelters run by HwH and includes the Community Kitchen, where volunteers make lunch and dinner for anyone who is hungry, and the Food Pantry, which provides non-perishable grocery items. I met at Gillespie with Jeff Wieser, president and CEO; Paris Looney, vice president and COO; and Ryan Soto, program  director. Two homeless men sat in the adjacent community room watching TV.

“Families might seem well-off, showing up in Mercedes and Range Rovers but fall into homelessness. W e t r e at t h e m a l l w i t h d i g n i t y. ” — Pa r i s Lo o n e y

The office itself is, well, not overly concerned with appearances. A tall stack of neatly enveloped applications attests to the oceans of paperwork they wade through each day. As we spoke, two students—from middle school and Staples—breezed in. They were volunteering in the food pantry and, yes, they were able to find everything they needed. (Note to my high schooler who may be reading this: What a great idea! Now stop watching Netflix.) Foremost, they began, HwH is a shelter. Their priority is to provide clients with a bed. Clients may stay up to 90 days as long as they follow the rules: no drugs or alcohol, no weapons, no violence and no verbal threats. Clients are rarely kicked out and rarely need to return after their initial stay. The caseworkers, all of whom hold masters degrees, figure out what each client needs: income, disability benefits, medical care, referrals to AA meetings, even taking them to appointments if necessary. 30

GIVING BACK

(CON TI N U ED)

If they’re a parent, then registering their child(ren) for school and finding babysitting services. Once Ryan was on the phone finding transportation to the hospital for a pregnant client about to give birth. This help-however-you-can attitude is what Jeff refers to as “the secret sauce of all the success.” So, who are the clients? Anyone. Ryan recalls being a child in Danbury, Connecticut, and knowing a man in the community, “a well-liked member we all looked up to.” One day this man showed up at Ryan’s desk. “Did it shock me? Yeah, as it would anyone else,” Ryan says. “Families might seem well-off, showing up in Mercedes and Range Rovers but fall into homelessness,” Paris says. “We treat them all with dignity.” HwH, originally Interfaith Housing, began on Dec. 5, 1984, a year after Ronald Regan cut funding to mental state hospitals. In Westport, homeless Vietnam vets and other displaced patients found comfort at Temple Israel, Assumption Church and Saugatuck Church, among other houses of worship. At night, Saugatuck opened its nursery school so they’d have a decent place to sleep. At that time, homeless shelters were only in cities. But two parishioners, Jim Gillespie (Saugatuck) and James Bacharach (Assumption), along with Pastor Ted Hoskins and Rabbi Bob Orkand, decided (and I’m wildly paraphrasing) “We have homeless here.  Let’s make a shelter here!” And—BOOM! —what would become Homes with Hope was created, and stories of growth and re-creation began. A few years ago, Jeff sauntered into Panera Bread for lunch. He recognized a man behind the counter but couldn’t place him. Perhaps the man was a fellow banker from his corporate days?  “Did I commute with him?” he recalls thinking. The man came up to Jeff and said, “You run Gillespie Center! I was there for six months last year.” Then, before heading back to work, he added, “You saved my life.”
