AROUND TOWN Westport Library Director Bill Harmer welcomed the audience with insightful commentary on the strong tradition of protest in our nation’s history and its importance to our democracy. He was followed by First Selectman James Marpe who commented: “This is a time when many high school students are making their voices heard around causes and issues that are important to them. The TEAM Westport Essay Contest winners have made an extraordinary demonstration of how powerful those voices can be. All Westporters should be proud of these students and the contribution they have made to everyone’s perspective on an issue that has drawn national attention from all sides.” This year, for the second year in a row, the essay

As a veteran broadcast journalist, Alisyn knows something about the fast-paced world of cable news. In her witty, spot-on debut novel, "Amanda Wakes Up," she gives the reader a  behind-thescenes look at the drama of a cable news network. The novel, which was selected by NPR as one of the best books of 2017, features a fictional morning show — a blur of breaking news, big scoops  and colorful personalities. The protagonist,  Amanda Gallo, takes  the reader into  the TV trenches  as she lands a plum gig at a big-time cable news station and quickly learns her dream job is a minefield of ethical and personal dilemmas.  Prior to joining CNN, Alisyn worked for many years at the Fox News Channel, most notably as part of the morning show "Fox & Friends." Alisyn lives with her husband and three children in Westport.

Her parents are the owners of Greg & Tony Salon, a staple in Westport for more than 30 years. She dreamed of opening her own blow dry bar for years before debuting her Southport location in 2012 and her Westport location in 2013. Blow Dry Westport and Blow Dry Southport are now successful salons that not only offer blowouts, but hair styling, make-up services, hair treatments and beyond. “We are very fortunate...We are the pioneers of this business concept in our area and we continue to evolve,” she says.  Blow Dry is often involved in the community by participating in philanthropic events. "We partner with organizations such as Near and Far Aid, Pink Aid, Women at Heart...and [we do] hair and makeup for fundraising fashion shows for charity."  When September isn't in the salon, she loves spending time at the beach with her family and bulldog, Natasha Louise. “That is my favorite place to be,” she says.

RENOVATE & REFINE Nick Vitiello, Owner of in2blue design

Dive into Summer NEED A SPLASH OF SOMETHING NEW? THESE IDEAS FROM AN INDUSTRY EXPERT WILL HELP INSPIRE YOUR NEXT POOL RENOVATION.

ARTICLE SOPHIA BABUN PHOTOGRAPHY JASON SETIAWANT AND JOHN VIDELER

THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER ARE HERE. It's the perfect time to renovate your pool or to finally install the pool you've been dreaming of for years. Nick Vitiello, owner of in2blue design in Norwalk, gives us industry insight into what's trending in pool renovation right now. In2blue design is an innovative and detail-oriented pool construction and design company that creates unique and livable outdoor living spaces in Westport and beyond. What’s trending when it comes to pools right now? According to expert Nick Vitiello, it all has to do with new technology. “One of the trends we are seeing right now is LED lighting,” he says. “It’s nice to create this environment that at night is still welcoming. Saltwater systems create their own chlorine naturally from salt. You can have a pool that is almost chemical-free...It’s good for the environment, it’s good for your kids and it’s a healthier more natural, organic body of water to swim in.” Having a saltwater pool system is not the same as swimming in the waters of the Long Island Sound, however. “It’s like the salinity content of a teardrop. It’s nice on the skin, and it doesn’t affect your hair or burn your eyes,” he says. 24

Spa systems with strategically placed hydrotherapy jets can be beneficial to your physical and mental health. "Hydrotherapy is a water return that has air mixed into it... That’s where you get the therapeutic benefits of the bubbles mixed in with the water," Nick says. You can even get your hot tub wired and conveniently control it through your smartphone. “The cool thing about this is if you work in the city and you take the train every day... you want the hot tub to be on when you come home. [All you have to do is] press a button on your phone and it will be ready for you," he says. Another interesting trend he is seeing is blurred lines between indoor and outdoor spaces. A great outdoor entertaining space brings people together and serves multiple purposes. This can be anything from bi-fold doors that open the whole living room or dining room onto the patio or an outdoor kitchen, fire pit or an outdoor TV.
