LIFESTYLE LETTER 6
One of our favorites is Amanda Mas who opened Westport’s first tattoo shop! It wasn’t easy, but she finally made Rebel & Rose a reality and helped to effect more affordable rents so entrepreneurs can open downtown shop spaces (thank you, P&Z!)
Then we turn to The Walters, an indie-pop band named after Walter Kosner who grew up in Westport. After breaking up in 2017, legions of fans re-popular ized their hit single “I Love You So,” persuading them to get back together and make more music magic.
And, finally, dressing up is back! Check out our gorgeous photos of gowns available at The Winged Monkey. We can’t discuss clothes without highlighting designer, Christian Siriano and his new Post Road “department store” The Collective West. His boyfriend, Kyle Smith, is a talented designer in his own right. He’s two years into his line Future Lover’s of Tomorrow and you’ll enjoy seeing how his urban chic meets coastal vibe. They’re not the only ones in fashion design. Staples grad Eliza Bowens has been learning about design and, as you can see in her feature, she’s quite good and plans to pursue it in college. Curious to know about the stores curating our purchases? We talked to four esteemed boutique owners to find out why and how they choose their mer chandise, and more. We didn’t stop at fashion. In this issue, award-winning interior designer Stephanie Rapp discusses her aesthetic, and Blossom + Stem shows us beauti ful blossoms for fall parties. We’re always looking for interesting content. While we’d love to think we know every thing, we don’t, not by a mile. So please email me marisa.maclean@citylifestyle.com or our editor robin.chung@citylifestyle.com and let us know what you know!

LOCAL LIMELIGHT | ENTERTAINMENT On the set of Million Little Problems video: Danny, MJ, Luke, Charlie, Walter. (Photo: Joelle Grace Taylor) 30

After graduating from Staples, Walter headed to DePaul University in Chicago to pursue film. In 2014, at age 22, his interest in music eclipsed his interest in school and he left to focus on the band he had formed with musician/friends Luke Olson (lead vocalist), MJ Tirabassi (rhythm guitarist/ vocalist), Danny Wells (bassist), and drum mer Charlie Ekhaus (drummer), and of course, Walter (guitarist).

ARTICLE BY ROBIN MOYER CHUNG
I spoke with Walter, who grew up in Westport and now lives in Los Angeles, between concerts. His personality, like the band’s music, is affable, engaging, and just-happy-to-be-here.Yes,Walter’senjoying their newfound celebrity but this isn’t his first brush with fame. At 10 years old he played Si Crowell in Westport Country Playhouse’s production of Our Town starring Paul Newman. (His mother, Midge, is particularly proud of this.)
Then this spring I heard The Walters performed their song, I Love You So, on the Jimmy Kimmel show*. The next day what do I hear on the radio? Yup. I Love You So So the TikTok/streaming famous indie pop-band is now famous famous with a certified platinum hit single. But here’s the best part… well, aside from the part about the band having a certified platinum hit single: not only did they write this song in 2014, three years after they broke up, it’s also the first song they ever wrote.
The same year they recorded their debut EP “Songs for Dads.” But are they really tunes for fathers? “No, we just thought it was funny,” explains Walter. In 2015 they released their 2nd album, “Young Men” and fan favorite song, Hunk Beach, which has nothing to do with a hunk or a beach.
31| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/WESTPORTSEPTEMBER 2022
Moreover, the easily singable/screamable chorus is irresistible to anyone who loves to belt a love song. Then “things happened very quickly,” says Walter. Within one year they became Chicago's best band friend, delighting audiences with gigs pretty much any time, anywhere. Fans loved their wit, catchy music, and Luke’s dance moves which channel drunk-uncle-at-a-wedding. (Luke, the band’s party motivator, is a manifesta tion of his hair: reasonably clean-cut but otherwise chaotic.)
The musicians named their band after Walter just because they liked “The Walters”. Which is pretty much how they make most every decision. While still coalescing, they wrote I Love You So, exemplifying their Beach Boys-meetMac Demarco sound; breezy and carefree with the immediacy and authenticity of bed room pop. With a strong melody and a lyric just edgy enough to keep it modern without compromising its character, the song imme diately garnered a large local audience: I hope you feel what I felt when you shat tered my soul 'Cause you were cruel and I'm a fool So please let me go But I love you so (please let me go)
We first heard of well-known indie popband The Walters last year, from lead gui tarist Walter Kosner’s stepfather Bernard Deverin (who gave Walter piano lessons and is one of WLM’s Men of the Year).
A COMEBACK STORY AND WESTPORT NAMESAKE
The Fall and Rise of The Walters

LOCAL LIMELIGHT | ENTERTAINMENT Luke and Walter (Photo: Haley Beekman) 32

In 2017, still reeling from their ill-planned tour, Walter received a call which confirmed their rising popularity: an invitation to play a set at the prestigious Lollapalooza music festival, alongside esteemed bands such as Blink-182, Machine Gun Kelly, and Lorde.
John wasn’t the impetus for The Walters comeback, but it didn’t hurt that a movie star was knocking at their proverbial door.
(Photo: Joelle Grace Taylor)
Though their fan base was growing, the low pay, hard work, and stress they endured throughout the previous months made con tinuing the band untenable. They broke up.
By 2021 they were older, mature enough to know they needed a manager, and wanted to make music. They reunited at the end of the summer, just in time to see I Love You So pick up speed and cyclone its way through TikTok.
Live performance. (Photo:
The first song they recorded after reuniting was Million Little Problems. Today’s pop musicians love to sing about their mental strug gles and personal challenges, and Problems siphons from this trend: I try to tell myself I'm worth it I try to build myself back up But man life's been so uncertain I guess I'll have to test my luck But if you’re expecting an angst-y ballad then you clearly hav en’t read this article carefully. It’s an upbeat, fun-loving listen with a visually stunning video.
33| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/WESTPORTSEPTEMBER 2022
As Walter and I wrap up our interview, I ask if he’ll ever teach a class at Staples. He laughs, then admits, “Generally speaking, we aren’t very talented musicians. I lost my theory a long time ago, but I love writing songs. Sometimes it’s good to know you don’t need to be the best in your jazz band or your orchestra to be suc cessful in music.”
Reviews praised their performance as “rocking the stage,” and “the show began the day on a high adrenaline rush… to songs off of The Walter’s first collection ‘Songs for Dads’ and a new unre leased track that received exciting vibes.”
With their next first song written, they’ll record an album and embark upon an international tour, this time with hired people who know what they’re doing.
Problem being, they had no clue about logistics and they didn’t have a manager. Result being, they botched the booking. Badly. Walter explains, “We’d play Utah, drive five and half hours to some motel, then drive twelve hours the next day to our next destination just in time for sound check. We’d do this over and over again.”
In 2019, John C. Reilly (heard of him?) reached out to the dias poric Walters, curious to know when the heck they’d re-band. He and his boys are big fans - in fact, they performed Fancy Shoes, Walter’s favorite song, in a school talent show.
Buzzing from their burgeoning repute, the guys decided a twoto-three month band tour in a windowless passenger van was an excellent idea. So they hit the road.
The video is a prepster’s send-up of hip-hop decadence: instead of Rolies and bling we see Cartier clocks and vintage china. Instead of party-to-excess, The Walters are afflicted with sloppy table manners. And my favorite part: Walter on a station ary bike wearing an oxygen mask. It’s witty, makes little sense, and includes a special appearance by Flavor-Flav.

Born overseas and with an early advertising career in New York City, Rapp has an interior design education from Parson’s School of Design and more than two decades as a leader in the local design community. A conversation is happening in a Stephanie Rapp room – even when the human inhabitants are nowhere to be found.
“There’s a suggestion of back and forth to the pieces, a counterbalancing,” said the owner and principal designer of Stephanie Rapp Interiors. “You want to go there.”
It’s that eye for understated, yet elevated sophis tication that makes the award-winning Westportbased firm a largely referral-based business. Many of Rapp’s clients seek her out for the livable-meetsluxe quality they’ve enjoyed while at a family holiday celebration or lingering over dessert in a friend’s dining room.

This feature began as a “new store in town” piece, announcing Christian Siriano’s The Collective West. Yet it’s impossible to relegate Christian Siriano to a store opening, just as it’s impos sible to call a MyTeamTriumph event a race. Some of you know him as a clothing designer and host of Project Runway. Some (like my publisher) inhaled every moment of every reality show he was ever in. Some of you don’t know him at all.
Then Leslie happened, furthering the ripples of the industry’s sea change. On June 28, 2016, comedian/actress Leslie Jones tweeted that no designer showed interest in dressing her for a movie premiere. Leslie is black, six feet tall, weighs around 225

The annals of fashion highlight Coco Chanel who disdained corsetry and invented the little black dress, and Christian Dior who enabled wealthy war-torn women to wear wasp-waisted, elegant attire. Rich, young, thin women everywhere have enjoyed gorgeous clothing conceived by genius creatives for decades. Then Christian (Siriano, not Dior) lands in this rarefied world of couture and revolutionizes it by creating clothing not only for this elite population, but for everyone else who wants it. First it was collaborations with Payless and Lane Bryant, making his designs affordable. The industry taunted him, censuring him for cheap ening his brand. He didn’t care, nor did his couture customers.

Suddenly the industry’s ear burned from murmurs of dissent: is he tearing down the barriers of an ideal they’ve been constructing since their nascency? Well, yeah. Yes.

In the town where he grew up, like the towns in which all but a few of us grew up, women come in all shapes, colors, and sizes. They’re monied, sort of monied, not monied. For the most part, they all have an interest in looking attractive. So why save the good stuff for that sliver of the population the fashion rags deem anatomically and monetarily acceptable? What’s the point? None that he can discern. So he designs couture, middle market, and affordable collaborative collections for every type of woman. Today we see models and influencers of all shapes and colors. Clothing that topped off at size 16 now tops off around size 30 or more. Runways and advertisements boast a spectrum of women rarely before featured in mainstream media. Is he changing this all by himself? Of course not. But he’s playing a pivotal role.Thentwoyears ago he moves to Westport, takes stock of the empty store fronts, and transforms the beleaguered Men’s Wearhouse space into The Collective West. He looks around our town, finds tal ented local designers and businesses, and invites them to join. Griff Conti of Franny’s Farmacy, Sue Appleton-Webster of Swoon gallery, Wende Cohen of Bungalow, to name few. To be clear, The Collective West is a business. No one involved is a charitable entity nor, to my knowledge, intends to be. But that’s not what this is about. It’s about a man who’s helping everyone’s daughter, and some sons, to look at themselves in the mirror and be happy with what they see. It’s about women being able to buy clothes they love that makes them feel confident. It’s about a successful, well-known New Yorker who moves to Westport and fully immerses himself in the town, not expecting everyone’s attention but instead paying atten tion to everyone else. Most of all, he’s a genuinely kind, gracious guy. Sometimes that’s what matters most.
Christian made an elegant beyond-floor-length gown for Leslie, and in it she smiled for the Hollywood paparazzi as only a celebrity who looks fabulous in a gorgeous dress can.

pounds, and not stereotypically beautiful. Which, if Vogue is indic ative, helps explain why a bona fide star in a blockbuster-hopeful film couldn’t find someone to dress her. In response to her tweet, he waved an emoji hand and it all began.

The store had to be in Westport for two reasons: 1. A large number of her clients live here, 2. Westport has never had a tattoo shop and she wanted to create something different “that would be comfortable and welcoming to all guests.”

Meanwhile, Peter Gray, president of Pyramid Real Estate Group, had just acquired 155 Post Road East. He scheduled an appointment with Amanda to view the second floor of his new property and was busily vacuuming the space when she arrived, startling him to a near heart-attack.
These offerings were beyond those of a typical salon: tat toos, false eyelashes, body piercings, permanent make-up, and spray tans. Once considered peripheral, even gritty, these service are nudging themselves into the mainstream and the professionals at Rebel & Rose (RR) are well positioned to dom inate the new beauty frontier. She already had the shop’s name in mind. “I thought the Rebel (tattoo) Rose (beauty) had a nice flow to it while keeping it simple and sweet. …I wanted to have more of a salon feel but keep it a bit edgy.”
Unfortunately, her plan to open a welcoming and inclusive shop was made difficult by some unwelcoming gatekeepers.
After their meeting, Peter recalls, “There was never a question in my mind, with her incredible talent… with her sharp focus and business acumen, that she would be enormously successful.”
weighed in: “Tattoos especially on women Yuck that’s why there [sic] called tramp stamps.” Real estate agents, despite their lack of epistemic knowledge of the industry, belittled her capability: “Are you sure you can afford rent just by making tattoos?” Others didn’t even ask questions, they simply didn’t want “this kind of business” in their space. The whole experience just wasn’t Westport. At least, it wasn’t our diverse, open-minded, and accepting Westport. Of course, she hadn’t factored in this type of derision when she planned her newest venture. After successfully launching her own studio two years ago business proved so successfulmen and women scheduled months in advance for a Mas-tatshe decided to go bigger and broader. “I met a lot of ambitious, talented women,” she says, "and I developed this idea to create a unique space with some of them… with a diverse offering of services for tattoo and beauty.”

Further, he understood an important and often overlooked part of Amanda’s skillset: aureola tattooing. After a terrible accident, a woman in Peter’s life required the reconstruction of an entire breast. To complete the reconstruction, only an adept tattoo artist could make it look realistic. “Adding this touch was very important to her,” Peter explains. “It was heal ing for her. It allowed her to feel comfortable and whole again.”
54
Amanda, with Peter’s support, didn’t just open a liminal business; she also instigated positive change in how downtown Westport does business.
After their initial meeting, the good part of the story kicksBecausein.
OUR TOWN | STYLE + BEAUTY
It’s hardly a secret that downtown rents can be crip plingly expensive: vacant storefronts last year made Main Street look like a smile full of cavities. Second story retail was the only solution, the problem being it was rendered illegal by the Business Center District over 60 years ago, on October 25, 1979.

At least we know that a 2nd floor store has nothing on a pan demic-driven urban exodus. I digress, and a special shout-out to the WPD for their respect and understanding that today’s traffic is killing us softly.)
And how’s business going? According to Peter, “I don't think I have ever seen a business launch as successfully as Rebel & Rose in Westport.” In fact, any emails to Amanda kick back an auto-re ply: With an influx of new inquiries daily, it may take from 3-5 business days for me to get back to you.
55| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/WESTPORTSEPTEMBER 2022
Welcome to Westport!
A win for Amanda, and a win “for other small businesses… who have dreams of opening up in Westport.” When they opened, Amanda recounts “We got countless phone calls from men and women of all age groups,” wishing them luck and to say congratulations. Most memorable was the call from an elderly woman who has lived in Westport for over 40 years. “She felt like this was the coolest store to open in downtown Westport since she has lived here, and loved the fact that it was female-owned and -operated,” Amanda smiles.
Also, officials then were intent that floors above the first be affordableUnfortunately, housing.this law alienated entrepreneurs, includ ing Amanda who had worked on RR an entire year before viewing space. A group of residents learned of her dilemma and took action, including WDMA former president Randy Herbertson, RTM mem ber Sal Liccione, and First Selectwoman Jen Tooker.* They brought her situation to the attention of P&Z members Mary Young and Danielle Dobin, chair of a Regulatory Revisions Subcommittee (RRS). RRS is focusing on changing regulation to increase the feasibility of vibrant, new businesses, especially start-ups who can’t shoulder first floor rent. Immediately, they began the tricky process of changing the text. Danielle states, “Rather than have the P&Z staff tell Amanda to look in another town, the P&Z Commission opted to change our regulations so that businesses like Amanda's can now open in Westport.”
Amanda waited for weeks with “uncertainty and stress." On February 18, 2022, she sat on her sofa with her dog, watching the
Zoning committee meeting on zoom. When second story retail was approved, “I burst into tears.”

TOP SEASONAL TRANSITIONAL TABLESCAPES: We get many requests for a clean, neutral palette that looks beautiful against any fall color. Pair a flax linen with white florals and your favorite cutlery for a gorgeous pop of bright white without speaking too seasonal.

BRING IN THE FALL, MAKE IT SUBTLE: No one is suggesting you gourd up your table gar land-style (editor’s note: Please. No.), but sneaking some hints of fall into your ‘scape is a great way to welcome the season. September brings us beautiful stems of wheat, a variety of sunflowers, and even antiqued and dried hydrangea. All of these goodies can be paired with fresh flowers and almost any color linen.

Lovers of Today is a bar at 132½ East 7th Street in NYC. A little known haunt with a great name, it inspired Taylor Swift’s album, “Lover.”
It also stuck in Kyle Smith’s mind after he went there for drinks. Then one night at 2 a.m. he thought, “Future Lovers of Tomorrow!” (The writer’s exclamation point, not his.)
“The name Future Lovers of Tomorrow (FLOT) is looking to the future, and I love ‘lov ers,’ it’s catchy and cute,” he explains, “I’m a really optimistic person and want my clothing to reflect my personality.”

His ideal customer? Harry Styles and Taylor Zhakar Perez. Until then, FLOT shoppers hail primarily from Connecticut.

The rea sonable price point makes each piece roughly the price of a tank of post-quarantine gas. The collection did well - better than he thought it wouldand many styles sold out. With an aesthetic honed from years of working at Prada and edgy London-based All Saints, Kyle - who looks like one of his models - wanted his clothes to be urban chic, wearable, and stand-out. He moved here in 2020 with his boyfriend, designer Christian Siriano, and during these two years, FLOT has main tained its urban chic while “the new collection has a beach-y coastal vibe inspired by Westport.”

Q&A WITH ELIZA BOWENS ARTICLE BY ROBIN MOYER CHUNG 90
Designer,Young Aboutto Embark
LOCALLY SOURCED STYLE + BEAUTY A
When she was 12, Eliza Bowens designed a caped dress, drawing inspiration from a binder full of notes she collected of fashion writer Megan Hess. Since then she’s designed many pieces, including gifts for friends, cos tumes, and her sister’s graduation dress. A ’22 graduate of Staples, Eliza plans to study clothing design in Europe.
WLM: You designed the wedding dress for the Staples’ production of The Descendants. What was your inspiration for the four designs that you made, and did they ulti mately select your favorite? Eliza Bowens: I was told to keep it very sim ilar to the dress from the show. I used a lot of ideas from other outfits of Mals in the movie as well, to make the dress more her own, then put my own twist on the original one. Some of the designs I made were centered around different parts of her personality as she changed from good to evil. For example, one was a darker purple versus lavender when she decides to go against her mother. The one we picked wasn't my favorite design, but overall it made the most sense for the show and I am very happy with the turnout of the dress. I think my favorite part of making it was picking out the fabrics. I got to handle really beautiful designer fabrics like the brocade crossover piece under the chest and the spar kly tulle at the top. I also had to make a muslin prototype for fitting Quinn, so I got a sense of how I wanted to manipulate the fabric. Eliza Bowens in one of her designs.

EB: I really love Versace's archived couture collections, as well as John Gaultier, Thierry Mugler, and Japanese designer Junya Watanabe. All of these designers have some kind of avant-garde approach to their designs, and they break the barrier of simply designing a shirt or dress.
EB: I usually pick a method to jump-start my thoughts; for example, some of my past collections have come from vintage National Geographic magazines, futuristic archi tecture, music, and my most recent being bone structure and olive trees. I design what I feel from what I see or hear, and then decide what season it would be for, if I think it should be big jackets or long dresses, the color scheme, etc. How it would look really isn’t a thought until I finish all of my research.
WLM: If you could design a line of clothing right now for retail, what would it be and why?
EB: To this day my favorite piece is from my first col lection I made in my freshman year. I think I love it so much because I spent almost a year making it. It includes many different parts of the dress including beadwork, sulvi (which is a type of method we use where you create stitches on sulvi and sew scraps, then put it in water and the sulvi dissolves, leaving just your stitch work) and a lot of fabric manipulation and draping. My professor Irina Simeonova taught me how to do all of these things, and it was the first real experience I had at cre ating something big, whereas before it was simple dresses for things like my little sister’s graduation or dresses I could wear. I even hand-painted some of the dress.
@ElizaBowensArt Creating a new piece.
WLM: What are several designers who inspire you?

FL: It's best to start with a consultation to evaluate the specific concerns and recommend the best customized treatment plan. My goal for each patient is to look refreshed, revitalized and always natural.
Q: HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS LAST?
Q: WHEN WOULD SOMEONE CONSIDER EYELID SURGERY?
Eyes Wide Open 98
Flora Levin MD, FACS 1391 Post Road East Westport, CT 06880 (203) info@drfloralevin.com557-6464
FL: After upper blepharoplasty, the recovery is about one week. Most patient report there is minimal or no dis comfort. The swelling peaks about 48-72 hours after sur gery and icing is necessary for the first two days. Stitches are removed on day six. After lower blepharoplasty, the recovery is 10-14 days, depending on the patient’s age and extent of the surgery.
DR. FLORA LEVIN ANSWERS QUESTIONS ABOUT EYELID SURGERY
Dr. Flora Levin (Photo: Julia Dags)
FL: For the upper eyelids, many people start noticing loose skin or hooding as early as their late 30’s/early 40’s. In the lower eyelids, puffiness and under-eye bags can be seen as early as teens and 20’s when they are congenital, or later in life as a result of aging. Eyelid surgery can be considered when the problem becomes bothersome enough to pursue correction.
FL: The results of an upper eyelid lift usually last 8-12 years and can be safely repeated. Lower eyelid surgery may last 20+ years. I often combine surgery with autologous fat grafting to the face, where the patient’s own fat is used to replace lost volume. The advantage is that, unlike dermal fillers, fat is natural and much longer lasting.
Q: WHAT IS THE RECOVERY LIKE?
Q: HOW WOULD SOMEONE GO ABOUT FINDING OUT MORE ABOUT WHETHER THEY ARE A CANDIDATE?
Q: WHEN WILL THE PATIENT SEE THEIR FINAL RESULT? FL : On average, anywhere from 3 to 5 months after the procedure. SELF CARE | HEALTH + WELLNESS
