LIFESTYLE LETTER

Your Votes Are In!

December 2022 PUBLISHER

Marisa MacLean | marisa.maclean@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Robin Moyer Chung | robin.chung@citylifestyle.com

We love the December issue and we think you’ll love it, too. Especially the 2nd Annual Readers’ Choice awards. You, yes, YOU chose your favorite businesses, eateries, professionals, and more - and we’ve got them all here! WLM promoted this contest with print ads, on social media, and in our newsletter and we are delighted it reached so many thousands of readers and voters. Thank you all so much for letting us know who and what you love, and choosing this year’s winners. To those who didn’t win, don’t worry! Readers’ Choice has proved to be so popular that we’ll do it every December, so gear up and get your vote on! Also in this issue, you’ll find some great places to shop for gifts (the season of giving and all). Lux Bond & Green has a a new Rolex department, so read about it, then check out all of their beautiful watches and jewelry on Main Street. Or think about giving (or keeping) a pair or two of stylish, comfortable SantM shoes, founded by local resident Min Santandrea. Read about how she got started, which includes some fun stories. Still stuck for ideas? Our biggest shopping guide of the year will help you find gifts for pretty much everyone on your list. A post-shopping potable is always a good idea. At Sono1420, Connecticut’s award-winning distillery, you can grab a drink in their cozy tasting room and/or take a tour of the impressive facility. We did both and wrote about their latest products. As for parties and events, Club203 - Westport’s new social club for individuals who self-identify as special needs - just began in September and its members couldn’t be happier. We moseyed over to their Halloween event to get a peek at their fun. Throwing a party or dinner? You’ll love Marcia Selden’s fabulous recipes for tasty new dishes. When you’re out and about, shopping or visiting friends or running errands, please remember that kindness and manners go a long way. This is a tip from women and men at the Center for Senior Activities. We’ve included a lot more of their sage advice for younger generations. Rounding out the the issue, Dr. Flora Levin offers solutions for looking your best this time of year. Have a wonderful holiday season!

SONO1420 DISTILLERY AND IT’S NEWEST SIPS

C O C K TA I L S

Ted Dumbauld, founder and owner of Sono1420.

ARTICLE BY ROBIN MOYER CHUNG

34

H AP PY H OU R | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

At first blush, Sono1420 is a welcoming bar/tasting room where locals gather to play board games, listen to music, and do other stuff that people do in bars, while sipping premium cocktails. But the room behind the bar is the real party, a sort of Willy Wonka’s Liquor Factory, filled with large shiny steel machines, winding pipes, and twirls of tubing. Whole strawberries soak in vats of vodka for mixing and bottling as Strawberry Lemonade Haze. Lemon grass, cloves, coriander and other jarred spices await their invigoration of the gins with their terpenes. Shelves of witty, colorful labels (“Peace Love High Proof Vodka”) include works by local artists (photographer Butch Quick, painter Joanie Landau and others). Bottles of Blaze, their new cinnamon whisky, are lined up neatly on a metal table, and small bottles are prepped to be filled with their signature vodka, fresh cold-brewed espresso, and coffee liqueur for Threesomes. I’ll get back to these later. The fun, relaxed vibe belies the seriousness of the craft. Since its opening, founder and co-owner Ted Dumbauld has won a slew of awards for his spirits, including two Double Gold medals in the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC) - the only distillery in Connecticut to do so. Which isn’t so surprising, given that Ted is one of those smart-as-hell guys who dives headfirst into some of the country’s most impossible jobs. After graduating from the Naval Academy, Ted was a nuclear submarine engineer for five years. His responsibilities included fixing the nuclear reactor and ensuring everyone didn’t drown. (One of Sono1420’s spirits is a “Navy Strength” Sindica Bangtail Gin. I imagine folks spending three straight months in a submarine would need that.) Then he went to MIT for his MBA and landed on Wall Street in quantitative finance which, as you may know, is a wildly complex sector of finance. As one non-quant money executive describes, “It’s really difficult.” Then, through a series of events, he turned to perfecting gin, vodka, and whisky. This isn’t Ted first foray into distilling spirits, however. When his son, Teddy, was young, they enjoyed projects: tapping maple trees for syrup, keeping a beehive. Then Teddy suggested they whip up a batch of whisky. So they threw a bunch of cornmeal and bread yeast together and “used a pressure cooker to jerry-rig a still.” The result was an undrinkable foul-smelling mess far left of their vision. Today, obviously, his skill is far more researched and much improved.

Gathering in the tasting room.

Now back to Blaze and the Threesome Ready-to-Mix Espresso Martini, two of Sono1420’s more recent and popular potables. In a brainstorm last fall, creating a grown-up version of the frat party stalwart, Fireball “Whisky”, was tossed into the discussion. If you’ve ever tried Fireball, you’ll remember it’s the sticky sweet shot (and where’s the whisky?) that burns the soft tissue of your throat and stomach moments before the alcohol level paralyzes your nervous system. But the idea of a good cinnamon elixir? Absolutely. Ted, his partner, Ami-Lynn Bakshi, and master mixologist Blake Poon went to work, infusing a high quality four year-old bourbon with a mixture of cassia bark and Vietnamese cinnamons (one for scent, one for taste). In addition to being a delicious award-winning drink (“Best in Class” finalist and a Double Gold medal winner at the 2022 SFWSC), it also tastes great over ice cream and in recipes like pulled pork.

Right on its heels comes the Threesome Espresso Martini, with a margarita and a Negroni in the pipeline (“the cocktail has to have three equal parts,” Ted explains). All you have to do is take off the top wrap, open each of the three bottles that come shrink-wrapped together and, all at once, pour it into a glass. Or, if you’re ambitious, pour into a cocktail shaker, shake with ice, and pour into a martini glass. It’s fresher than a pre-mixed martini and pours a single generous cocktail. Of course, they’re all Sono1420 spirits so it tastes fabulous. The day after my tour I wandered into a liquor store for a bottle of Chardonnay. Next to the registers was - you guessed it - a bunch of Threesomes Espresso Martinis! Ever curious, I asked if they sold well. “Yes!” The woman enthusiastically replied, “We go through an entire case every week or two.” Can’t wait for the margarita… Sono1420.com

Not by a software program, not by throwing darts, and not by a small group of opinionated people cloistered in a soundproof room. Congratulations to all who won!

From My Home To Yours: Wishing You a Happy Holiday Season May your home, too, be filled with friends, family, joy and comfort. “It’s our second holiday in our dream house! One of the people to thank the most for this is Imke. Our home went on the market on a Friday afternoon during Covid. Within an hour we met at the house. Imke guided us through the home buying process seamlessly. Our goal was a house in which our family would grow and create unforgettable memories. That is exactly what Imke found us.” - Glaucia “Especially during the holidays, we love that there is plenty of space in our home

for family to stay over, the layout is perfect for kids to play and run around, and that we have the best neighbors who have now become lifelong best friends.” - Jaclyn “We’re hosting the holidays for the first time in our home! We couldn’t be happier. Imke was absolutely fabulous! She successfully guided us through a competitive market to find the home of our dreams. While we are thrilled with our new home, we certainly miss working with Imke! “ - Olivia

Beautiful Velvet Slippers SANTM KICKS UP PUMPS AND SLIPS

ARTICLE BY ROBIN MOYER CHUNG

As I write, I’m sporting a pair of SantM’s Furlane velvet slippers. It’s a dreary, rainy day, but their cheery blue brings a ray of sartorial sunshine. SantM founder and owner, Min Santandrea, introduced the slipper collection in October 2020, while we were busy re-assuring our pumps and stilettos that, yes, we still loved them, and yes, we will wear them again someday, but flat and comfortable works best with our current wardrobe selections. She based the design on historic Venetian upper-class house shoes, in which “Royalty [could] sneak up to meet lovers,” says Min. The rooms were marble among the wealthy and kingly sets, so the hardwood-heeled footwear of the day made an unwelcome racket on the floors, alerting any and all residents to one’s comings and goings. “I needed someone who learned the trade in the factory and knew the vernacular - how the pitch works, how the heel works.”

The slippers became popular among the plebeians for their comfort and style, becoming standard kicks for gondoliers, as the rubber doesn’t scuff their canalfaring dories. The collection promptly became SantM’s top-selling shoe, eking out other flats and pumps, all handmade in Italy and designed to be pleasant on the pullum pedes. Before founding SantM, Min, a former executive at Uniqlo and Walmart, lugged around at least 20 pounds of stuff with her: laptop, charger, notebooks. “I knew I should, but I did’t want to carry a second pair of shoes,” she recollects. Yet her options were limited: needle-heeled toe-pinchers or geriatric spuds with the visual appeal of toenail clippings. She couldn’t, nor could most women, find a stylish pump that fit comfortably when running from trains to conference rooms. After complaining to her husband, he suggested she start her own business. She’d always wanted to, so… She studied, consulted with podiatrists and shoe designers, and tried to find a shoemaker in NYC. Then she quickly

realized “I needed someone who learned the trade in the factory and knew the vernacular - how the pitch works, how the heel works.” During one of her research trips to Italy she stayed with a colleagues - and “shoe addict” - Pepi, from her post-college days working at the Guggenheim. While talking about her search for the perfect shoemaker, Pepi exclaimed, “I know who you should talk to!” Then she threw open her closet to reveal rows and rows of beautiful shoes. “This is Ernesto,” she exclaimed. Min contacted Ernesto, nicknamed “The Prince of Shoes,” who told her “Don’t talk to anyone, I’ve got your designer.” He put her in touch with one of his first apprentices, Leopoldo. In 2018 she and Leopoldo, now in his fifties, began fashioning her SantM vision. Leopoldo and his craftspeople, often family members, were exactly what she wanted. “…They preserve the beauty of a strong heritage and… they hold true to to the Renaissance Guild establishment that is still thriving in Italy.” CONTINUED >

She includes video footage of the artisans on her website and it’s a great watch - a montage of craft, colors, leathers, and an antidote to the sterility of mechanical manufacturing. Creating a pair of shoes “takes 36 artisans on average, which lends a rare and personal touch that no machine can replicate.” The result? “Incredibly well-made, wellloved shoes,” Min describes. Also, ones in which no detail is too small. For instance, back to the Furlane. During WW2 the shortage of rubber forced shoemakers to cut bicycle tires into soles. With the design of this shoe, Min includes a recycled rubber sole stamped to resemble bike treads. Oh - and every shoe is handmade. The Furlane shoes uses no glue and the upper and the sole are hand sewn. Each collection - Chiara, Anacapri, Cortina - is named after one of her favorite Italian neighborhoods. And all SantM packaging is scented with Carthusia, a perfume with a great backstory: In 1380, the father prior of a Carthusian Monastery learned that Queen Joan of Anjou was visiting Capri. (Joan’s own tumultuous story includes the murder of her first husband, a string of three other doomed wedded unions, wars, and finally her arranging the marriage for a niece who would eventually have her thrown in jail and executed. #familyfirst.) Anyway, Joan was set to alight onto the monk’s seaside enclave around the time Pope Urban VI declared her a heretic. (Yes, Joan lived not the life most enviable.) He hurriedly plucked blossoms and greens of all types to wow her with the little island’s abundance. Three days later, while extricating the bouquet from its watered vessel, he realized it smelled quite nice, so he conscripted a fellow monk to distill and concrete the flora and fauna for a lovely diffusive. In 1948, a monk of a different order stumbled upon the centuries-old recipe and, with permission required from the Pope, recreated it to become Italy’s beloved scent. A fitting perfume to compliment SantM’s shoes (Joan’s horrifying legend notwithstanding). Both the scent and the shoes evolved from techniques and recipes shared through generations of craftsmanship, re-invigorated for modern times, born in Italy, and designed to delight women with style and quality they can enjoy every day of the week. On a personal note, I love mine.

Green began loading up his horse and cart for a day of selling and repairing gold eye frames, chains and pocket watches, along the streets of bustling downtown Waterbury, CT. The teenager was a long way from his home in Lithuania, but he knew something that’s key to every successful business. “Something was needed and he was an entrepreneur. He asked, ‘What can I do?’” says his great-grandson, John Green. “‘Let me help you and let me be a part of this community.’” It’s a mindset that resonates with John Green, president & CEO of Lux Bond & Green, the 124-year-old business that grew from Green’s visionary beginnings. “People say there’s no loyalty in today’s world. That’s hogwash,” John says. “If you give something of great value with exceptional customer service, your customers will come back and they will tell other people about you. I’ve waited on three generations of families and it’s the customers who keep us in business. We feel fortunate to be able to help people create icons and heirlooms for years to come.” Stepping into any Lux Bond & Green location – in Westport, Glastonbury, West Hartford, Mohegan Sun Resort & Casino in Uncasville, Wellesley, Mass. – customers will know what he means. Lux Bond & Green is one of the longest continuously operating singularly owned jewelers in the United States. And, while it built its foundation on its commitment to quality and exceptional service, the company has kept up with the times by offering some of the most sought-after watches and jewelry designs in the world. The pandemic reinforced their value, in fact. Unable to travel as much as they’d like, many families turned to luxury items to mark holidays, special occasions and anniversaries, John says. “Our industry had especially strong sales with 2021 being a record year,” he says. In addition to the shifting economy, many small businesses were more nimble than their bigger competitors, able to offer the personalized concierge service, contactless virtual consultations and speedy delivery customers appreciated.

“If you give something of great value with exceptional customer service, your customers will come back and they will tell other people about you. I’ve waited on three generations of families and it’s the customers who keep us in business. We feel fortunate to be able to help people create icons and heirlooms for years to come.”

A case in point is the Westport location’s new Rolex suite, an 800 square-foot space carved out of the Brooks Brothers location next door that caters exclusively to the watch company’s statement pieces – investments that discerning customers know will have lasting value. “Rolex is one of the top brands of anything in the world,” John says. “It’s a beautiful little space to showcase them.” Why are watches so coveted? “There are a lot of reasons,” John says. “it’s something that gets worn everyday. You hear people say, ‘When I don’t have my watch on, I feel naked.’ And it’s true. And they’re symbolic – of family, of success, of personal style in the shape or type of watch.” During the pandemic, the price for previously owned watches actually outpaced that of new models, in large part because the demand went through the roof and some required a several-month to multi-year wait. It’s easy to see why when one looks at the vintage watch market for models associated with Westport’s own Paul Newman.

The actor and race car driver once gave his daughter’s boyfriend one of his own Rolexes for doing some yard work. That same watch – a sleek Daytona chronograph style he probably bought for about $1,500, John estimates – sold in 2017 for more than $15 million. As an authorized Rolex dealer, Lux Bond & Green has a set number of exhibition watches from the brand. The company keeps a client book of customers looking for particular models as well as other popular styles and brands. In recent years, Lux Bond & Green has added Tudor watches, a Swiss brand founded by Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex. A move towards larger, statement watches has meant a move away from men’s and women’s designations and to designating sizes by millimeters. “Large watches are not just for men anymore,” he says. “Now we just call them by size.” While watches make up an important part of their business, the company has also expanded its diamond offerings in

recent years and it sports a full line of distinctive jewelry and gifts for all occasions. Some pieces are manufactured and engraved on site and the company has built a reputation with top international designers, such as David Yurman and Roberto Coin. Other respected brands include Baccarat, Tag Heuer, Steuben and William Yeoward Crystal. This holiday season Green predicts many will be looking for gold jewelry that is quite popular now. In addition, he expects to see the usual rush on winter holiday engagement diamonds as well as an expanded interest in men’s jewelry. Green believes the Westport location thrives because the professional staff is not just on commission and truly cares about the long-term relationships with customers. “We treat people like family,” John says, “and we’ve always tried to be a leader.” Lux Bond & Green 136 Main Street Westport, CT 06880 lbgreen.com

Get to know their medical issues and what it’s like to be brought up in their household, whether they’re Jewish or Italian or Irish or whatever. Learn about their community and traits. Now we grow up all over the place; it’s not as communal as it used to be.” “Be kinder to people, be more respectful, listen to your peers. People are more into themselves now, they don’t open the door for people, they don’t say thank you. If someone does something nice they think it’s normal.” “Kids should play outside and do more outdoor work.” “If you can’t go to college then get a trade, because we always need a plumber, carpenter, or mechanic.” “Just be happy - do what makes you feel good, take a breath, smell a flower, take a walk and enjoy nature. Advice for Future Generations

George Joseph Kleros

Age 80 “Growing up, I was taught to respect others, to treat them the way you want to be treated.” “Learn from your mistakes and share them with your children and grandchildren.” “Kids, show respect to everyone, especially police officers when you’re being stopped.” “One of the big things I learned, from volunteering in the RTM, is how to agree to disagree.” “Learn to help others, learn to work with groups of people. It creates a better understanding of each other and a better lifestyle for all of us.” “Be a good listener. One of my best jobs was walking the beat [as a police officer]. Once people trusted me, they conveyed their concerns about what’s going on around town. So I could explain why things are a certain way, and I had a better relationship with the community.” “It’s a good feeling, to be there for others.”

Age 79 “I earned money and I saved a lot, so I taught my son to save.” “We try to be polite to everyone and listen. We contact our family all the time - it’s a good feeling when people keep in touch and help each other.” “Education is the main thing. If kids have the opportunity to get a higher thing, life can be better. Save for a college fund and for education.” “Having friends is important so you’re not by yourself.” “Help each other. I help anyone however I can and it makes me feel good. When people get help it makes them feel good.” “Do not stay on the computer all the time. Do a sport, do an activity.”

Jack Klinge

Age 83 “Take advantage of all life offers - try new things, take chances, challenge yourselves, find out what works for you and what doesn’t; but don’t leave saying to yourself ‘Gee, I wish I’d done that or gone there or…’” “READ! I try to read one book at least every two weeks - fiction and non-fiction. Also, read some good newspapers every day and evaluate their different editorial positions - keep an open mind and think for yourself.” “Get married and raise some new generations - pass on your acquired values. It’s also nice to have someone to come home to!” “You will have to take a position and get involved in the consequences of climate change. Try to be proactive and work for the better good - if you don’t want to be part of the solution at least get out of the way of those who do.” “Don’t be afraid of change as many older generations often were - embrace new ideas and technology.” “Pick your friends carefully - they will be a source of comfort, enjoyment, and trust your whole life.” “When it comes time to pick a profession, find something you really enjoy. I know it sounds trite, but it’s much more fun getting up in the morning and going off to a job you enjoy.”

Susan L. Pfister*

Director, Westport Center for Senior Activities “Always be kind and thoughtful. Kindness goes a long way and unfortunately, we’ve lost a bit of this thoughtfulness and have become a more self-centered society.” “One of the easiest yet hardest things to do is to simply stop and listen. We all need to do a better job at listening. How many times have you asked someone how they’re doing but moved on to something else before they’ve had a chance to answer?” “Stay positive, hopeful, and optimistic and chances are, you’ll smile a lot more!” “Do whatever you need to do to maintain an open and honest relationship with your family.” “Learn how to have constructive conversations with your loved ones even if you disagree.” “Respect each other’s differences and opinions.” “Support one another through the good times and the more difficult ones. Make sure loved ones know they can always come to you if they need to talk.” “Explore, create, and challenge your intellect, but make sure you do it all in a balanced manner.” “Don’t always look for monetary rewards or raises. A lot of accomplishments and rewards come from positive feedback and words of appreciation.” *Sue retires from WCSA on January 1, 2023

Soup, Sip, and a Mess FESTIVE RECIPES FROM MARCIA SELDEN CATERING

R A S P B E R R Y E T O N ME S S INGREDIENTS • 5 pint containers fresh raspberries • 1 cup plus 1/4 cup sugar • 2 tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon juice • 1 1/2 tablespoons raspberry liqueur • 2 1/2 cups heavy cream • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 16 - 2” meringue cookies, broken in pieces (We make our meringues from scratch. Purchasing them will simplify this recipe.) DIRECTIONS 1. In a pot, place 1 cup of sugar, 3 pints of raspberries and lemon juice. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally. Add the raspberry liqueur. Lower the heat to simmer for another 5 minutes. With a spoon crush the berries. You are looking for the mixture to appear syrupy. 2. Remove from heat, add one more container of fresh raspberries to the sauce and set aside to cool. Cover and chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours as this needs to be cold before assembling the dessert. 3. Beat the heavy cream with 1/4 cup of sugar, and vanilla together until it forms firm peaks. 4. In decorative bowls or glasses, layer the whipped cream, the raspberry mixture, a few fresh raspberries and then a few meringue pieces. Repeat once or twice, depending on the size of the bowls or glasses, until they are 3/4 of the way full. Top with a few fresh raspberries and a spoonful of whipped cream. Serve immediately or chill, until ready to serve. 5. We like to embellish ours and add dark chocolate chips and toasted almonds or pistachios to add some crunch.

Club

By now you’ve probably heard of Club203 - the Westport-based social club for adults who self-identify as a special needs individual. It bridges the social gap between the ages of 18 to 55. After high school, “They have limited to no social opportunities to meet like-minded friends until they’re picked up by senior services,” explains Stacie Curran, club co-founder with Sharuna Mahesh, and Kathryn Turley-Sonne. They threw their inaugural party at MoCA on the evening of September 22. “I thought 30 people would show up,” says Stacie. Well, 30 people didn’t show up. Over 110 did. Joe Agostino, a disabled young adult, was DJ and party motivator, getting the crowd jumping and dancing. Partiers from as far Middlebury, CT joined the fun. CONTINUED >

Dancing before the movie begins.

Staples graduate Robert Bolton, 20, attended. An intern at Stew Leonard’s and volunteer at the Center for Senior Activities, he admits that since high school “Not socializing was a big change,” and he suffered anxiety as a result. Though nervous to attend the kickoff at first - “Would it be boring?” - he “got to dance and meet new friends, a lot of friends like me.” “I’ve never had anything like this before, I felt so much better when I went,” Robert exclaims. “It turned out to be really fun.” And he came home with phone numbers, so he can reach out to have coffee with people he met. Robert’s mother, Linda, says of watching his experience, “I almost cried.” After Sophia Tarsy graduated from Wilson Prep she went to Housatonic College for her associate’s degree. Now that she’s back in Westport, working at CVS and enrolling in the Sweet P baking program, she needs a social outlet. “When I was in college I went to a bunch of parties,” she says. “But now that I’m back at home I have a different lifestyle.” Upon learning about Club203 Sophia thought, “it was very interesting, kind of a gathering of people with disabilities.” And yes, she had fun! At their next event, a Halloween party on October 19 at Remarkable Theater, a long line of cars stream into the lot, guided by parking lot attendants. Parked beneath the enormous screen is a row of cars with trunks open, full of decorations and candy for trunk-or-treating. Nearly every partygoer, and many parents and guardians, are in full costume. Organizers added a mix and mingle for guardians and parents to this event “so they can meet other parents of who have an adult-child with special needs,” explains Stacie. The mood is ebullient and everyone is thrilled to be here - Club203-ers, parents, and guardians. We are all witness to the start of something new and needed, incredible and worthy of celebration. State of Westport (Photo: Mindy Briar)

One of the joys of the holiday season is expressing our gratitude for the people and places that enrich our lives. I am so grateful for this vibrant community - the residents, business owners, town employees and volunteers that make Westport so wonderful. It’s truly amazing to see how far we’ve come since this time last year! Our arts and cultural organizations are back to pre-pandemic levels with plays, concerts and shows, and our amazing residents are out in force supporting their fundraising efforts. We continue to welcome new residents and business owners who, like many of us, chose Westport because of all it has to offer. They bring new energy and enthusiasm to our already vibrant community. Our restaurant scene and local businesses are thriving, and our residents are taking full advantage of Westport’s many recreation facilities like Longshore, Compo Beach and Burying Hill Beach, where a new jetty was installed this year. Of course, we can all agree that the resulting traffic issues are less than ideal, but I am happy to say that the newly created Traffic Safety Unit of our police department is working on providing some much welcome relief. Projects to reinvigorate our green spaces, like enhancing Longshore and reconnecting the riverfront to downtown, are also currently underway. We know how important it is to ensure our special town amenities stay relevant and continue to exceed the expectations of our residents and visitors. Very exciting times! For more on these initiatives, please visit www.westportct.gov/parksandrecreation and www.downtownwestportct.com.

The City Lifestyle

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

Quick Contours, Fills, and Glows Look Your Best During This Busy Season

With the holidays approaching, there may not be enough time to take on an invasive procedure, such as surgery. So, what are the options for quick improvements to look your best? 1. Botox & Dysport are great and quick ways to soften the wrinkles between the eyebrows, the forehead and around the eyes. Plan the treatment one month before your event in case you need a touch-up, which is best done two weeks after treatment. There are also some additional applications of Botox that you may not be as familiar with: it can soften the neck lines, help with droopy corners of the mouth, diminish pore size and decrease sweating. 2. Dermal Fillers are another way to temporarily improve shadows, restore facial volume, contour and balance the facial features. Dermal fillers are best done 3-4 weeks before an event to allow everything to "settle" and look its best. When an artist paints an older person, they use shadows to achieve an aged appearance on a two-dimensional canvas. While fillers don't truly lift tissues vertically (as surgery

does), they fill areas than have flattened or have become depressed and improve those shadows to restore a more youthful appearance. A holistic approach to the face is imperative to achieve natural results. 3. Lasers can also be used to brighten and tighten the skin. More aggressive lasers, like the CO2, require downtime to recover and a few weeks to see the results. However, there are other lasers that are less invasive. These lasers target more superficial skin layers and pigmentation to improve skin tone, texture, pore size and give a more youthful glow. For most such lasers, treatment can be done 10-14 days before an event. A few can even be done the same week for an instant boost.
