"EARTHA & KITT: A DAUGHTER'S LOVE STORY IN BLACK AND WHITE"

ARTICLE ROBIN MOYER CHUNG

EARTHA KITT IS, ARGUABLY, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT WOMEN IN MODERN HISTORY. The new memoir, Eartha & Kitt, written by her daughter, Kitt Shapiro, is a moving reflection of their life as a family of two. Mother and daughter shared experiences as improbable as Eartha’s own rise from starvation to star, and Kitt’s unique perspective creates a portrait of an international entertainment icon - who moved to Weston when her daughter moved to Westport - that’s humorous, poignant, and entertaining. EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER 11, BORN TO RUN She took me with her wherever she went to perform and, as she was internationally famous, that meant that we traveled to places near and far—New York, Great Britain, Sweden, Denmark, Australia, Japan. . . . You name it, I’ve probably been there...

She could also still make herself heard. And that’s what she was doing right now, loud and clear. She literally left this earth screaming at the top of her lungs. Tears were streaming down her face. And she was screaming with this sort of—this primal, animal-like sound. It was intense! That’s when I realized that she was actually going. Going now. But not willingly. And not quietly, for sure. In typical mother-daughter fashion, I soon began screaming right back at her. “You can go!” I cried, my lips close to her ear, holding her to me with all my might. “You can go!” I kept yelling again and again as I wept. “I’ll be all right! I’ll be all right!” Because it suddenly became clear to me that she had been waiting. Waiting until I wasn’t alone. Now that Allan was there with me, she could die. I wasn’t going to be alone. It was an incredibly emotional moment, with these fierce, guttural sounds coming out of my mother as she screamed at the top of her lungs. Then, all of a sudden, she fell silent. And I knew that she was gone. Gone.

Piggy backing.

Silence. Complete silence. From all three of us. “Is she . . . dead?” I sobbed to Allan. “I don’t know,” he said, equally stunned. We both looked at each other, bewildered. We didn’t know what to do next. That’s when I said, “Well, whoever is at those pearly gates waiting for her, they are going to get quite a handful. Because she is not coming peacefully, that’s for sure!” Maybe I was in shock. Maybe it was disbelief. Or maybe I was able to joke, even at that moment, because as I said, my mother had taught me to find the humor in everything.

FOLKS WHO’VE EARMARKED $45K-$125K FOR GOOD, CLEAN, SUMMER FUN WANT ONE THING: A SWIMMING POOL. Or a tennis court. So two things. Or, if your family is like mine, a slip ’n’ slide to replace the duct tape/trash bag/hose thing my kids scrapped together last summer for roughly $3.19 which killed a large swath of grass and looked about as terrible as you can imagine. But let’s focus on pools. Contractors are crawling all over Fairfield County, anxious to over-promise and under-build these coveted custom watering holes. But before you ink your tag on their line, it’s important to pony-up on the intel. 42

Westport Lifestyle | July 2021

Nick Vitiello, owner of in2blue design.

Nick Vitiello, owner of in2blue design, has been building swimming pools in this area for 25 years. What he sees this summer “is unprecedented. Everyone’s chomping at the bit and they really don’t know what the process of building a pool [here] is.” So when these guys guarantee a shiny, new swim spot in a month? Be wary. “There are no promises,” Nick warns. Permits and surveys: The permit process alone can take 6-plus months. “Is the house on septic or wells, conservation or wetland areas? What about setbacks? A whole litany of things come into play,” Nick explains. Even if everything is perfect, remember we just had/are having CONTINUED >

SO, YOU WANT A CUSTOM POOL (CONTINUED)

a pandemic. The building department, conservation department, and every other necessary department is deluged with applications, making the approval process as nimble as a brick. Waiting times are slower for everything, not just your swimming pool. Then you need a civil engineer to survey the property and consider where the drainage is going and how it will affect the septic. And you know who’s hiring surveyors? Everyone else who’s building anything. It all takes time. Building and materials: Once your permits are approved, wouldn’t it be lovely if the pool guys swooped down like birds of paradise to crack sod? Yeah. That won’t happen. “We work from permitted job to permitted job, so it’s tough to say definitely when we can start working,” Nick states. “Your pool is on the docket but it could be 1-3 weeks before we can begin. We have to mobilize equipment, stake the work site, and get ready for excavation.”

44

Westport Lifestyle | July 2021

Construction timeframes for pools vary with the material: Gunite, 4-8 weeks; Vinyl, 4-6 weeks; Fiberglass 2-3 weeks. Then build in time for surrounding masonry and landscaping and you’re looking at 4-8 weeks minimum. Aaaaaand a gentle reminder about how COVID is affecting everything in the world. Raw goods, filters, pumps, machinery - the supply chain is playing catch-up after quarantine. Excavation site: If your eyes light up at the prospect of finding pricey antiquities beneath your grass during “excavation,” well… Nick’s team has unearthed plenty of treasures, from car parts to (cue: horror music) animals in caskets. “Typically when we find something, it’s not very good,” Nick apologizes. Sorry, dreamers. No one’s planting diamonds for posterity. These “finds,” however, may cause more delays and expenses (parts of houses, bedrock). Something else to not look forward to. It’s not all bad news, though. While you should be savvy to the pitfalls, the possibility exists that the process goes swimmingly. If it doesn’t, remind yourself that you’re super lucky to be building a pool in your yard instead of peeling duct tape and garbage bags off the grass. Then make some sandwiches, grab a bottle of wine, and go to Compo Beach for a swim. in2bluedesign.com CityLifestyle.com/Westport

We all know family caregivers who are burned out. Caregiving is hard work! In fact, 84% of caregivers describe it as difficult. The average caregiver provides 20 hours of care each week to their loved one. It’s no wonder, they can find themselves neglecting their own needs.

WAKEMAN TOWN FARM DRAWS TEENS AND OTHERS WITH A NEW PIZZA OVEN

FIRED UP ITS 800-DEGREE OVEN IN 2019, LOCAL CHEFS, VOLUNTEERS, AND STUDENTS HAVE EXPERIENCED WTF’S MISSION, “GROW YOUR FOOD, KNOW YOUR FOOD.” This incredible community resource furthers WTF’s mission to promote healthy food production, responsible land stewardship, sustainable practices, and community service; plus, it’s a heck of a lot of fun. WTF hosts outdoor cooking classes incorporating organic bounty that students have grown and harvested on the property. It has also enabled the team to educate and serve pizza to students from underserved communities, including more than 200 campers from Bridgeport’s Horizons Program. As hoped, the oven has become a social and community hub and a novel addition to WTF’s camps and programs. S’mores pizzas, anyone? The oven also allows WTF to provide food for casual events, like the spring and fall Beer Gardens. Finally, the

pizza piazza, featuring picnic tables and string lights, is available for rent, which drive revenues and helps WTF be self-sustaining. During the Pandemic, the new Pizza on the Patio nights offered safe, socially distanced outdoor adult gatherings for friends seeking to get out for a glass of wine, live music, and a homemade pie while touring the grounds and gardens. And who wouldn’t enjoy a multi-course dinner cooked by top local chefs like Frederic Kieffer of Artisan Southport, who used the wood-fired oven to cook roasted oysters, summer berry tarts, and more? Going forward, the pizza oven will continue to serve the Westport community as a good, old-fashioned outdoor gathering spot with some mighty-fine pizzas topped with WTF’s homegrown basil, garlic, hot peppers, and heirloom tomatoes. How great is that? So, who cooked up the idea for a pizza oven? A few years back, committee members at WTF were brainstorming ways to attract more teens. Liz Milwe and Christy Colasurdo, then-co-chairs, had seen a variety of pizza ovens at farms and wineries in their travels across the country and decided it was time to investigate.

Now more than ever, a house becomes a home. Back then pizza ovens weren’t ubiquitous. Yet NPR predicted a trend which started in the Midwest as a way for farmers to increase revenues while utilizing their farm produce and products. It sounded promising. The farmgals predicted that an outdoor oven would be a win, and modeled teen educational initiatives after “knead 2 know,” the Yale Sustainable Food Program’s weekly Friday presentation series, in which a stu-

there is public interest and funding to pay for it — quality commercial outdoor ovens don’t come cheap. But a bump in the road has never deterred the WTF team before. And as luck would have it, one of WTF’s most generous supporters (and committee member), Robin Tauck, mentioned the Tauck Ritzau Innovative Philanthropy Grant designed to promote community initiatives across the globe. So they rolled up their sleeves, consulted with experts, submitted a proposal, and were accepted! Then the outdoor pizza ‘piazza’ came to

“MOST PEOPLE ARE GOING TO DIE OF SOMETHING AWFUL OR TAKE CARE OF SOMEONE WHO’S DYING,” MENTIONS WESTPORT RESIDENT IRIS GREENFIELD. Her husband, Jonathan, 50, has ALS. Iris is the primary caretaker for the family, including their three kids, Zach (12), Skye (10), and Josie (8). As Iris insinuates, their situation is not unusual. However, in a world in which people use social media to craft idealized portraits of themselves, even during traumatic events, the Greenfield’s authenticity and openness is unexpected and touching. It’s mid-afternoon and Jonathan is in a motorized chair at their dining room window, overlooking the front lawn. When Iris and I enter, she turns him so he and I can see each other. She wipes

Swirl to combine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine.

*The grain alcohol is used as a preservative as well as a carrier for the oils, but you can also use a product like this instead of grain alcohol at a 1:4 ratio (1 drop essential oil to 4 drops Solubol) if you’d rather and then just fill the rest with water to fill the 2-ounce spray bottle.

While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils). ORANGE MINT DRINK

HOPS & VINE

M Y FAVO R I T E SUMMER C O C K TA I L THIS RECIPE GOES ALL THE WAY BACK TO MY MOTHER’S MOTHER. It’s time-consuming, but well worth it. The syrup lasts indefinitely in the fridge and it’s a good way to use the mint you planted a few years ago and is now proliferating faster than selfies at an influencer gathering. You can mix it with seltzer for the kids, with champagne or - my favorite - vodka for adults.

INGREDIENTS + 2 cups water + 2 cups sugar + 2 enormous fistfuls of fresh mint leaves + Juice of 7 lemons (about 1 1/2 cups), plus zest of 1 lemon + Juice of 3 oranges (about 3/4 cup), plus zest of 1 orange

DIRECTIONS

1. Combine water and sugar in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Stir until sugar dissolves. Turn off heat. 2. Crush and rip mint leaves with your hands. Add to saucepan. Add lemon juice, orange juice, lemon zest, and orange zest to saucepan. Stir to combine. Let sit for, oh, 4 hours or so. 3. Pass mixture through fine strainer, discard solids. Mix to taste with vodka, champagne, or seltzer. And ice.

You can add fancy garnishes! I don't, but it IS possible!
