Your Most Memorable Adventures Dear Neighbor, The summer months bring so much! And summer adventures take on so many shapes and sizes. A few recent stories from my friends and loved ones include the following examples: losing a checked bag from Denver to DC while bringing kids to their dad for his summer time with them. Remodeling the third floor game room and changing out the foyer chandelier for something bold and brassy. A social studies teacher climbing mountains in Nepal with her dad and partner; an English teacher exploring Iceland and Ireland. Departure from a lifelong career to embrace work in a different industry. Moving a graduating senior across the country for college. Retiring the swamp cooler and having central air conditioning installed. Retired parents inviting family to join them as they go to their timeshare in the Florida panhandle. Your summer could include adventures similar or different. Amidst our own busy summer, our family will be logging a ton of miles over land and air. While we embrace the new memories these summer travels bring, the sobering realities of life around us is never far from our awareness. And, we remember how grateful we are for health, friends, safety, family, and loved ones who keep us grounded. We are reminded how all of life is adventure! MEDSPA OWNER OPENS DREAM LOCATION
If you had asked her 20 years ago, she might have told you this is exactly where she would end up. "I've worked six days a week for the the last 14, 15 years. It's finally paying off." Dawn Weber, owner of Skin Bar MedSpa, is proud of what she and her team have worked to build. She is also a little reluctant to let too many people see beyond the front door of her new location at the moment of this interview, the first week of June, 2022. She wants you to see only the finished space, once it's ready with six treatment rooms and a whole team ready to deliver a pampering medspa experience. Walking inside right now, one sees what you would expect of a space being remodeled and refreshed. New flooring and wall surfaces. Lighting that sets a tone of relaxation and renewal. Gorgeous marble countertops adorning the cabinetry. As well as quite a bit unfinished and still in progress. Rewind a couple decades. Dawn has always had a passion for great skin, and had her own medspa experience in this very space nearly 20 years ago. Where the new "Skin Bar" sign is now above the door outside, Dawn says the buildings in this complex previously had a different look. "It used to be glass. I got my first injections here. A nurse named Rose- she worked for Doctor Kirk and Michelle- they were a husband and wife that owned this place." Plastic surgeon Jack Zamora had an office here for about 10 years too. Dawn admits, "every day I would drive up and down 120th to go to work" in her

current Bradburn location, "I would picture my name on top of this building." When she learned last year about the "for lease" sign on her soon-to-be new space's window, she made a phone call and was signing to move in the very next day! Skin Bar is a family endeavor that Dawn is passing along. Her oldest daughter Darryon began many years back working with her mom, helping at the front desk. After several years, and training, and the opening of the Bradburn location, Dawn gushes, "she is such an amazing aesthetician today, and I don't know what I would do without her. I want to cry just thinking about it! My clients love her to death!" Not only a family atmosphere, but a professional one, Dawn talks about the medical staff who will be part of Skin Bar's new chapter. "I have a physician's assistant and nurse practitioner on board, and we have three other nurses who do IV hydration; there will be nine of us." Our palette’s are unique, and June honors that intimate and personal experience, letting each customer decide for themselves, their favorites. For over 22 years, Spero Winery has been making wine and serving customers. Though June grew up watching her mother cook with dry Muscat wine, and Clyde was raised with the family favorite red Zinfandel, Spero Winery manufactures over 20 varieties. Their process is special and holds true to the old world style of wine making featured and adored in Italy. In this process, fermentation on the husks of the grapes is key. While many American trainings teach that same technique, it is typical for it to last only the first couple of days. Spero Winery’s fermentation on the mash lasts the entirety of the fermentation process; their wines are then aged in oak barrels for a minimum of 2 years. WINE TASTING TIPS FROM THE EXPERT! Our expert, June Spero, tells all! If you have it, grab your crystal! It will provide the optimal tasting experience! Start with white, and finish with red. Go lightest to heaviest (viscosity and tannic structure), and move from dry to sweet. Let’s start! • Start with a small amount of wine in the bottom of your glass, 1-2 ounces. Don’t settle for less! You need a decent taste! • Swirl the wine several times- this opens the wine, allowing oxygen into the wine. • Get your nose in the glass! Smell it! Get a nice breath of the aromas- the nose of the wine. For the untrained, ask yourself: “Does it smell like it’s going to be delicious?” If it smells yummy, you’ll probably enjoy it! • Take a small sip, letting it rest in your mouth for a few seconds so it can reach all of your taste buds. • Go back for more! The 2022 Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro is lighter and makes more power and torque than its predecessor model. Cranking out over 93 horsepower, the Tiger has the guts to go anywhere you want to go in Colorado. With tubeless tires and longer suspension, you have enough cushion beneath you to absorb all of what the gnarliest trails dish out. On pavement, the Rally Pro's suspension has the capability to let you flick your way through corners easily and drama free. The engine gives you six modes for driving including offroad and off-road pro, which let you customize your riding experience. Compared to the Tiger 800, the 900 offers extra torque and low-RPM horsepower which come in handy on the trail and the highway. And with two radiators, you and your motor will stay safely cool. Plus, this allows the engine to be in a more forward position, giving you more ground clearance and a lower center of gravity. Bottom line, more agility at low speed, stability at high speed, and enough clearance to traverse any of Colorado's most rocky or paved roads.

Bom dia, (bohn dee-ah, good day) On June 7, 1494, Pope Alexander VI divided the world in half, the western half given to Spain, the eastern to Portugal. I’m not convinced the world was the Pope’s to give, however it does speak to the power Portugal once yielded. Roughly the size of Indiana, Portugal was a military and economic superpower for nearly six centuries. Much of the trappings of empire still exist, however, today its conquests are more of a tourist nature, sharing its beautiful beaches, vibrant cities and innumerable sights. As for its natural beauty, think of it as a miniaturized California, the entire country has a beach on one side, mountains on the other.

Let’s start our tour with the three most important words to add to your Portuguese vocabulary. Pastel de nata! Which may be loosely translated as a “a circular morsel approximately an inch tall and about three inches round of custard filling in a flaky crust of ambrosia”. Think of it as sunshine in a crust. With that in mind, our first stop is Lisbon, where most people will fly into Humberto Delgado (or Portello) International Airport. This is a transportation hub where you will find bus or train service that covers the better part of the country. If you rent a car, beware of speed traps, especially in small towns where you pay your fine directly to the local police! Expect to be stopped for routine checks by police, and make sure your insurance info is up to date. We elected to take buses and trains.
Lisbon fronts the Atlantic Ocean and has Rio Tejo running through it. The seaside boat traffic is a treat to watch, specifically from the Praca do Comercio. It’s a large square where locals and tourists alike gather to watch the sunset behind the 25th Day of April bridge. Lisbon’s city center has passed its prime. Sometimes charming, but heavily graffitied, it can feel a little tired. That said, it still packs a punch when it comes to sites— some of the highlights are Castle Town, (a castle with a view), The Baixa, Bairro Alto and Alfama districts, which comprise the “Three Neighborhoods” and are terrific for exploring, shopping, and dining. Moving on, three miles west of downtown Lisbon is Belem, where Portugal’s golden age began. From this port the voyages during the Age of Discovery

(and conquest) set sail. You’ll find the Monastery of Jeronimos dominating the town and housing the earthly remains of the explorer extraordinaire, Vasco da Gama. Belem is also ground zero for the aforementioned Pasteis de Belem, (Pasteis de Nata). Another great day trip is Sintra, with its version of Neuschwanstien perched high on the hill. It’s a fantasy of color and ornate facades. Within the same area and very walkable, (if you love hills) is the Moors Castle. Both structures are visible from each other and both have extraordinary views. That said, we were completely taken with the “gardens” of Sintra Castle. We enjoyed lush flowers everywhere and beautiful swans milling about the ponds. Evora, a whitewashed town southeast of Lisbon, is roughly 1.5 hours by either train or bus. This village has over 2000 years of history! We found a laid-back hamlet where you can discover the world of cork. Everything seems to be made of cork in Portugal, from sandals, lampshades, to wallets and purses. I didn’t see cork underwear but they have to exist. From Evora we took the bus back to Lisbon and headed north on the high-speed train to Coimbra. The highlight for us was the university, founded in 1290. The library alone is worth a visit. Biblioteca Joanian or King John's Library with its 55,000 books is a marvel. The whole of it is elegantly carved wood, from the pillars to the desks with gold inlay. Old town Coimbra is a little tattered but has those fun hide-and-seek narrow streets, giving it an Arab, Moorish feel to it.

Back on the high-speed train headed north to Porto, or mini Lisbon. Porto may be our favorite stop—built of granite on the water, the Douro River winds through it making it a city of bridges. Spend some time relaxing on the beach or surfing. If you enjoy seafood, Rua Godinho, a very long street, (in the Matosinhos district) is lined with a variety of seafood restaurants. Each one has an outside grill and every manner of the freshest seafood is available. I would be remiss not to mention the Lello and Irmao Bookseller. I’ve seen a lot of bookstores around the world and will say this one may be the most beautiful.
Lastly, spend some time in the Riberia area. Although touristy, it feels gritty and authentic with restaurants, bars, and cafes, all featuring a terrific view of the river with waterfront seating. Behind Riberia, climb the hill to the old town. There are a few little cafes tucked into the hillside, where you can catch your breath, have some port and marvel how the people of Porto climb this every day. There’s your appetizer for Portugal! I believe it’s a country often-looked for its larger, trendier neighbors of Spain and France. We visited in October, a good time to go, not too hot and too cold, not too crowded. Saude!
