LIFESTYLE LETTER
Celebrating the Inspirational Women of Westminster Hollywood actress, writer, director, and producer extraordinaire Mindy Kaling once said, “If you don’t see a clear path for what you want, sometimes you have to make it yourself.” Our Ladies' Issue features local women who are forging their own paths and inspiring others along the way. In this issue you'll learn about the business women of Polka Dot Powerhouse, a national connection company whose largest chapter is right here in Westminster. We also get to introduce you to Mrs. Westminster who competed last month in the Mrs. Colorado pageant. We asked some of our partners and Westminster's Mayor Nancy McNally to reflect on messages they would send to their younger selves. We think you'll be inspired by these reflections to think about your own path and all the ups and downs you've faced. Would you do anything differently? How can we share our own journeys with our daughters and other young women we know? What can we learn and how can we grow? It's said that Ginger Rogers did everything that Fred Astaire did, but backward and in heels. These Westminster women make thriving, connecting, succeeding, and inspiring look good. We are blessed to call them partners, friends, and neighbors.

Connecting the Dots The Fierce Women of the Polka Dot Powerhouse Westminster Chapter ARTICLE BY CATHI COOPER-FEEHAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KERI MILLS
“There’s a dot for that.” The mission of Polka Dot Powerhouse is to connect the world’s most positive, action-forward, amazing women to build lifelong friendships and business relationships. The organization prides itself on empowering, educating, supporting, and celebrating women. With over 60 chapters worldwide, they boast a wide and diverse membership. Colorado is home to 6 chapters, with the local Westminster chapter holding the designation of “Platinum Elite” status, meaning the chapter is the largest in the country with over 170 members and growing.

The growth and reach of Westminster Polka Dot Powerhouse is because of Connie Kercher, managing director of the chapter launched in Arvada in 2015. Connie is a powerhouse, a dynamo. Ask any Dot (that’s what they lovingly call themselves and each other), and she’ll tell you about her first encounter with Connie. She’s beautiful, energetic, bubbly, and encouraging. She believes so fiercely in empowering women that you can just feel it when you’re in her presence. She and her powerhouse leadership team consisting of Tiffany Blakley, Kristen Judd, Samantha Markey, Mandy McGowan, Roni Lee Reynolds, Stephanie

Schoolmeester, Samantha Schultz, Suzette Skidmore lead the chapter in monthly meetings (currently there are 4 in-person meetings to choose from each month) at Switchboard Networking Boutique (founded by Kercher in 2016). But this organization isn’t simply about networking meetings. There is a vibrant community online and in-person. The Dots gather one-on-one and in small groups all over the city, getting to know each other as friends, confidants, and sometimes customers and business alliances if the connection is right. The chapter holds regular social events, self-care opportunities, and educational workshops. Because of their designation as Platinum Elite, the chapter earned a special day of fellowship and inspiration with Polka Dot Powerhouse founder Shannon Crotty on April 14. This year Polka Dot Powerhouse celebrates 10 years of connections. Crotty wants, “to replicate the feeling that I had with my sister (and still do) for other women. When you are seen, accepted, appreciated, and valued, there is simply nothing you cannot accomplish. When you have an army of allies, educators, friends, colleagues, and clients who are genuinely thankful that you are on this earth and say, ‘We all go up together,’ everything changes. I love that.” We asked chapter members what inspires and empowers them. Kitty Coy said, “Being a Dot has changed my life forever. I am so supported by my Dot sisters that I have increased my business by 10 fold! I have broken out of my shell and really stepped into my greatness with the love and support of my Dot sisters!” Kiki Ringer, a literary agent from Colorado currently on a nomadic RV journey offers this testimonial: “I can’t imagine the person I would be without The Dots. Surrounding myself with supportive women boosted my confidence as a business owner, mom, and all-powerful woman. The openness of members to share, connect and be curious about other members pulls in women of all backgrounds. And, with the abundance mentality, there’s room for everyone; no limiting how many of one business can be included. The pandemic never felt lonely. I connected Dots all over the world. Connection first. The rest will come naturally.”

“When you are seen, accepted, appreciated, and valued, there is simply nothing you cannot accomplish.”
From the first day you step into Switchboard Networking Boutique for a meeting, you feel that you are on to something great. Jessica Millhiser joined in February and says, “I’ve already made wonderful connections with like-minded women and feel like I have a cohort I can lean on.” Polka Dot Powerhouse welcomes the participation of women and women-identified persons of all ages, races, abilities, backgrounds, religions, and sexual orientations. We seek and value a diverse and inclusive membership, and all women are encouraged to join. Our connections to each other transcend life experiences, educational paths, career choices, and family structures. Our diversity of perspectives promotes stronger personal and professional relationships that are valued by our members and celebrated in everything we do. Polka Dot Powerhouse hosts a special open house, June 7th, 6 to 8pm at Frolic Brewing. Regular meetings are June 1st and 2nd. Connect with Connie Kercher, Connie.PolkaDot@ Gmail.com and PolkaDotPowerhouse.com.

BECOMING A
MRS. WESTMINSTER’S PAGEANT JOURNEY
QUEEN
ARTICLE BY CATHI COOPER-FEEHAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY KELLY DALTON WOLITZKY AND SAMANTHA MARKEY
20
G IV IN G BAC K | BEAU TY
On April 9 at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver, the Mrs. Colorado pageant crowned a new queen, the strong and lovely Sylvia Waller. Also competing was Westminster’s own Kat Reisenbigler, owner of boutique The Chic Fox. But if you would have asked Kat if she thought she would see herself sashaying across a stage in heels a couple years ago, she probably would have laughed at you. This journey that brought her to a place of feeling comfortable twirling barefoot in an Elsa-inspired icy blue ball gown under downtown’s twinkling lights on a Saturday night is what makes Kat a queen in our eyes. A self-professed tomboy who likes dirt and trucks and country music, Kat was encouraged to sign up for the pageant by her friend Juliet Abdel. (Juliet also is president of the Westminster Chamber of Commerce and won the crown for the unmarried division in the pageant, Miss Colorado for America Strong, in 2020). Once Kat got past her initial shock at the suggestion, she decided to give it a whirl. She saw enough possibilities for growth and a platform for what she believes in. The cause that Kat holds dear to her heart is infertility. She and her husband Christopher welcomed their daughter Shelby into the world through IVF, and Kat works hard to give a voice to the women looking for community, resources, and healing on their journeys to conceive. She dreams of a time when any woman struggling with infertility can speak up about her struggles and find an affordable way to walk through IVF. Kat’s friends and family, especially her proud husband, celebrated this new confidence Kat found as she joined the pageant circuit, and Kat was surprised and encouraged to find a whole new community of friends. In the Mrs. Colorado pageant, you can see that these women hold each other up. They call it a sisterhood; the winners call each other “sister queens.” It’s not about one queen’s singular journey, but it is about calling out the strengths they see in each other. The reigning 2021 Mrs. Colorado Danette Haag said, “Today is a really hard time in the world to love yourself.” Kat and her fellow contestants show us that every woman is beautiful and inspiring in her own way. It’s the stepping out in confidence and going after a new challenge that makes her a queen.

CHILDHOOD LASTS FOREVER Camping Shapes A Girl’s Whole Life
ARTICLE BY SUSAN HENDERSON
If you ever went to camp when you were a child, you probably know the excitement and lifetime memories that can remain from that experience. The National TTT Society has sent deserving girls to summer camp since forming in 1911. Fifteen states from Washington, DC to California have National TTT chapters. Our goal is to increase the membership and chapters in Colorado to make it possible to send more girls to camp. One of our Westminster TTT chapter members went to a TTT camp, in another state, 62 years ago. To this day she is still thankful of her experiences, particularly when she received a new pair of tennis shoes provided by TTT. One of our most memorable experiences was sending a girl who had hearing loss to our YMCA camp and providing her with a full time interpreter. She was able, along with the other campers, to swim, horseback ride, participate in crafts and go on overnight camp out with camp song and s’mores. We have sent many girls to camp with behavioral, economic, social, and family difficulties. It is amazing and rewarding to see the difference a complete camp experience can have on these young ladies. Dear Younger Me
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
THREE WESTMINSTER WOMEN PEN A NOTE TO THEIR YOUNGER SELVES
Dear Younger Nancy, You were blessed to have a birth mother that gave you life. She loved you so much she made sure you had a family that would provide for you in every way. Being adopted at 4 months old, your world changed. The Lord has a plan and when you look back it will be very clear. Your values are based on your faith. You will learn to pray, help others, learn and lead. Your strong-willed personality will at times make things hard and at times make you shine. Be true to who you are always. You will see the Lord intervene when leadership learning opportunities are presented. You will have opportunities to teach others and help them lead. One of the best attributes you will possess is active listening. As a mother you will use those skills, and find when you listen and not judge, people will come back and talk to you. You will never know where life’s journey takes you until it does, a son born 10 weeks early, your oldest daughter getting out of the first tower hit in 9/11, and the news your second grandson has cancer and passes at age 16. As you journey on each path, you will hang on tight to your faith! You will pray what seems unceasingly. You will ask God why, what can you do, and tomake every moment count. God gave you a husband that supports you with his whole heart in whatever you choose to do. Together you will get through the rough times with friends and family by your side laughing, crying, and sharing the memories that get you through the day. You are creative. Start your own business and teach others. “Oh the places you will go!” -Nancy McNally, Mayor, City of Westminster

Words of Wisdom to young Diane, This too shall pass! Your business is slow, your boyfriend broke up with you. Your heart is broken... This too shall pass. A change of season: You’re super busy, and in love! This too shall pass. Don’t worry about what other people think about you, it’s none of your business. Be bold! It’s what you think of yourself, it’s the love that you give yourself, that matters. Surround yourself with good people. Some of your friends and co-workers are not on the same path as you and can derail your momentum. Don’t be afraid to get rid of them. Don’t go out with Dave! He is bad news. Invest and save more! The future is coming. Work for yourself sooner than later. Open your own salon even if you don’t think you’re ready, you are! Dance, love and laugh. Start your morning with some shower dancing and singing. Laugh at the small stuff, it’s ok! Love yourself. And others will too. Don’t make permanent solutions for temporary problems. Again, this too shall pass! You’re gonna make it girl! I Love You.... -Diane Kingsbeck, Stylist and Owner, Fabulous Hairstyles by Diane Kingsbeck

Little Girl, I remember you— All bouncing curls and coke-bottle glasses Daydreaming from the quiet of a tiny rocking chair One moment pensive—the next alive with singing Your Song And the world was listening with such care Oh four, I do remember How loved you were For all the colors of you… Colors change with the seasons Seasons change what once was true And I know that you’ve been wondering If your colors still shine through Nothing fun about this funhouse Twisted shadows, taunting laughs You can’t see, and no one sees you Every day you wear a mask But on stage the lights are brighter For a moment you are heard Characters feel much safer Since the emotions aren’t yours Fourteen—Can you hear me? I’ve ignored you for so long Every part of you is with me And I want to hear your song You sat heavy in my chest When I felt invisible

I couldn’t breathe So I dismissed you But you were never really gone Will you come and sit beside me? I’ll be ready when you are Broken mirrors, tapes rewinding You are why I got this far Let me tell you, you’re a phoenix This is where it all begins You will walk through many fires Over and over you’ll be born again An old soul needs reminding That you’re enough the way you are They said you were too sensitive But you will heal, and they are scarred. When heartache comes to visit It is you I listen to You hurt as deep as you love And you always see the truth I am grown and see you clearly-An alchemist who just needs time I will hold you in all your magic Precious inner child of mine. -Ashley Townsend, LCSW, MT-BC, therapist at VitalCare

Equal parts nostalgia and composure, this neighborhood restaurant serves up great food in a socially engaging atmosphere, offering brunch and dinner menus. Step outside the restaurant, and you’ll find the only hotel property in the country that offers a Vespa to zip around town. Halcyon feels a bit like your living room with a warm and inviting vibe. Soak up the social atmosphere both upon entry and at the Elevated Rooftop Bar, and bring your swimsuit for the pool deck complete with recreational curling, cabanas and breathtaking views of the city. Beyond the charm of Cherry Creek, Denver’s culture of arts and live music are thriving and growing by leaps and bounds. Take Meow Wolf, for example. Meow Wolf’s third permanent exhibition, Convergence Station, opened in Denver in September 2021 and is a not-to-be-missed experience. Likewise, the Denver Art Museum hosts its global art collections representing cultures from around the world, with more than 70,000 works of art in 12 permanent collections along with several outdoor artworks not to be overlooked.

Denver’s open-air Red Rocks Amphitheatre featured the “most attended music venue in the world in 2021” thanks to its fantastic and rare aesthetic, history, and milestone moments that propelled it into its status it holds today. Finally, don’t miss the downtown district favorites RiNo and LoDo. Denver’s urban-vibed River North Art District is a former industrial mercantile area turned into an artist magnet—blending urban charm and industrial revival with a collection of maker and artist galleries, breweries and bars, restaurants and coffee roasters, and street art murals surrounding you at nearly every corner. Be sure to check out Bigsby’s Folly for its roaring ‘20s-inspired urban winery experience.
