Sixth grade... a key time in one’s journey. Right on the front edge of dramatic life changes and the beginnings of new growth. It’s a time when new friends and formative experiences can set the direction of your whole life. When Nick was 12, he and his family lived in the Atlanta, Georgia area, and experienced such a direction-setting series of events. But before that story, let’s introduce you to Nick today. Nick Wigston lives in the north Denver suburbs and works for Lenz Sport, a Colorado company that is known for their hand-crafted mountain bikes and ski bikes. You can read about Lenz Sport’s founder, Devin Lenz, in Westminster City Lifestyle’s “Meet the Makers” story in the February, 2022 issue. Devin painstakingly constructs each bike, and Nick helps new Lenz riders get fitted and aligned to their new bikes for the best possible experience. But how did Nick’s love for mountain biking begin?

“My dad bought mountain bikes for himself and my mom,” Nick shares. His mom never rode. So, Nick used his mom’s bike and rode with his dad. In the forests of the Atlanta suburbs, Nick eventually discovered trails where he and his friends would spend hours and days exploring, and feeling the thrills of ultimate freedom. Similarly, Devin’s interest in biking was sparked as a kid by the BMX movement of the 70s. His idea for the concentric pivot suspension design came to him in middle school. After riding other companies’ bikes for years, and after taking some vocational welding classes, Devin built his first prototype in 1996. In 1997, he sold his first custom built bike. Devin says a lot of Lenz Sport riders tell him their bikes give them an unfair advantage on the trail, “I’m a better rider because of the 29-plus tires. It just gets sick traction.”

“When you get on a really fun flowing trail,” Nick describes, “interesting features, scenery, forests... there’s this focus on that. There’s nothing else in the world at that point. Any worries that you have about work, or home, or money - those issues you deal with on a daily basis - they’re gone.” Nick adds how specifically a Lenz bike enhances that experience, “it becomes an extension of your body. You and the bike just become one. The bike, suspension and geometry are all designed to help you tune out distractions and go straight into flow state.”
