B R OOK LY N’S FINEST PIZZA

EAST COAST SLICES, RIGHT HERE IN DENVER Food is home — and some foods, whether it’s mom’s recipe or a state classic, bring us back for a sweet second of nostalgia. Colorado is lamb country, Midwesterners love their fried pickles, and Californians feel at home with avocado toast. For New Yorkers, it’s a pizza slice that pays due tribute to the East. But finding a pizza shop that truly transports you back to the Big Apple is few and far between in Colorado.

12

LOCA LS ON LY | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

Carlo, a Brooklyn native, moved to Denver in ‘95 and established Brooklyn’s Finest Pizza 20 years later. Seeing as Denver is home to plenty of East Coast transplants, he’s keen on bringing fellow New Yorkers back home for a moment with his classic pizzas, strombolis, pastas, and salads. There are currently two locations in Denver, one off of Lowell Boulevard and the other off of 16th Street Mall.

ARTICLE BY MONTY MONTGOMERY

Brooklyn’s Finest isn’t your run-of-themill corner pizza shop. They’re vetted, with deep roots in East Coast cuisine. They've won plenty of awards, from being the number one Denver pizza shop according to Google for the past five years to ranking as a top-ten pizzeria several times. Carlo credits the recognition to his hometown recipe and truly fresh ingredients: “I make the food the way I grew up with it, with the best meats and cheeses, and our whole staff is trained that way. What I did in New York, I do here.” Some pizza shops only offer full pies, making on-the-go lunches less ideal. This isn’t the case at Brooklyn’s Finest. Whether you want a full pizza for family night or a slice for your hour-long lunch, both

stores allow for to-go, dine in and delivery options. Carlo also offers classic Italian strombolis, pastas, and refreshing salads. The 16th Street location usually has 25 different pizzas on display and in rotation. You’ll find a full bar at both locations, but Carlo stresses that Brooklyn’s Finest is a family establishment. The restaurant also doesn’t shy away from community efforts. With a location across the street from Regis University, Carlo often gives back to higher education. It’s all part of a collective effort to stay in tune with the Denver community. He says, “We’re here for the neighborhood. Great service, quality food, and happy customers are all we’re after.” Taste Carlo’s traditional recipes at their location off of Lowell Boulevard or their second shop off of 16th Street, and be sure to browse their menu at brooklynsfinestpizza303.com. There, you can order online at either location or book an upcoming catering in mere minutes. You can also book a pickup or delivery order directly, rather than paying those pesky DoorDash and Postmates service fees. Lastly, use promo code ONLINE10 for a discount when you order online from Brooklyn’s Finest, courtesy of Carlo.

Streeter Flynn Vodka

Your New Favorite Vodka

ARTICLE BY MONTY MONTGOMERY

14

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

Good liquor at a good price sounds like a fallacy. Cheap vodka helps the wallet, but scorches your throat, and vice versa. But here in Colorado, Streeter Flynn is making quality vodka at an affordable price and after just a year and a half, his sugarcane vodka is primed to go statewide. Streeter launched his vodka company in October 2020 and started selling the product six months later. Between then and now, he’s gotten his product into 65 of Denver’s best restaurants and five of Aspen’s most popular eateries and bars. Along with his sales skills, it’s Streeter’s process that differs from the rest. Streeter Flynn Vodka separates itself by focusing on the product rather than the marketing. Most other players in the industry are spending countless dollars to market their vodka, at the expense of quality ingredients. For Streeter, his business philosophy is simple: “Why not make a great vodka, for a great price?” Instead, Streeter Vodka invests in top-tier sugarcane as the foundation for their product. Other vodka brands save capital by using corn, the cheapest product you can start with, or potatoes, which are also quite cheap. Sugarcane is delivered from Ohio and distilled in Denver before going through a rigorous distillation process. Streeter remarks that this is what separates them from the pack: “We run our vodka through 14 feet of charcoal during the distillation process. That’s more than any other vodka company in the world, and it makes a difference.” Plus, sugarcane is naturally

gluten-free, while other clear liquors may contain elements if corn or potatoes are used. At the moment, Streeter Vodka has one signature product: their sugarcane vodka. But after a bit of growth and consideration, their liquor types are anticipated to expand. Streeter forecasts gin, tequila, and bourbon to be in the rotation down the line. However, their vodka line is currently at top-of-mind. Most of all, the company’s explosive success has drawn attention in the form of awards and distribution offers. Out of 11 national and international contests they’ve participated in, Streeter Vodka has taken home 10 of them. They recently won the Melbourne Double Gold for offering the best vodka in the competition, which gained the attention of the third-largest liquor distributor in the country. Now, Streeter is just enjoying the process: “We’ve gone from a start-up to a marketing company, with the potential to go state and even countrywide. It just keeps sort of rolling at a nice pace.” For Streeter, this growth is what he’s most proud of. The company is currently planning a statewide launch with distribution through RNDC, the Republic National Distributing Company. He says, “We’re looking at what makes most sense countrywide. South Florida is a potential next step, but we’ll see.” Visit streeterflynn.com to find a nearby store that sells their sugarcane vodka, and be on the lookout for the Streeter Flynn name next time you’re dining in Denver.

Sunnyside Supperclub Some eateries thrive purely off of ambiance, with food that’s easy to forget. Others may take your tastebuds to new heights, but the atmosphere just isn’t right. After walking into Sunnyside Supperclub, you realize that you really can have it all. Sunnyside Supperclub has a rich history that stems back about 80 years. Originally, it launched in 1943 as Ernie’s Lounge & Supper Club. Ernie, the original owner, eventually sold it to three brothers in the early ‘80s. They’d go on to name it 3 Sons Italian Restaurant, which was family owned since 1951. And while they had a location down the street from Ernie’s, they didn’t own the building. So, they approached Ernie about buying the building and moving their restaurant, since the tenant for their second location refused to sell. Through a chance encounter, one of those three owners would go on to turn 3 Sons Italian Restaurant into what it is today. After attempting to buy a building to launch his own restaurant, Johnny Sannino, one of those three sons, encountered Ernie by mere chance and offered to buy his building from him outright. To carry out the deal, Johnnie and Ernie met at a bar during the morning hours. According to legend, Ernie had a puddle of whiskey on the bar with two empty glasses upon arrival. After some chit-chat, Ernie asked for an offer, Johnnie drew one up with his lawyer, and the rest is history. Since that negotiation in the ‘80s, My Three Sons has found a new identity as Sunnyside Supperclub.

PIZZA, WINGS, SALADS....... AND MIGHTY ICE CREAM ARTICLE BY MONTY MONTGOMERY PHOTOGRAPHY BY TAYLOR DAVENPORT

The current owners are of similarly notable business acumen. Along with Sunnyside Supperclub, Mighty Hospitality Group also owns farm-to-table restaurant El Jefe Denver and the renowned Lucky Pie Pizza which formerly had three locations. While the 16th Street Mall and Niwot locations have since closed, the first and original location in Louisville still stands. However, the group made its true mark with Sunnyside Supperclub’s renowned menu of unforgettable eats combined with a remodel carried out by the previous owners. The two-year remodel features a beautiful interior lined with live trees, hanging light fixtures, and an industrial ambiance.

Apart from the atmosphere, there’s one simple thing that customers love about the experience: their food. Thanks to local purveyors, the restaurant only uses locally-sourced ingredients that make a shockingly noticeable difference. Farms in Firestone, Fort Collins, Boulder, and many others source their individual items. Take Wisdom Family Farms for example, which provides all of the restaurant’s chicken and eggs. Other proteins come from Buckner Family Farms in Longmont. This means that Sunnyside’s ingredient purchases go directly to the people who farm the land, including Colorado farmers who provide the flour for their famous Detroit Pizza. CONTINUED >

If you’re a pizza enthusiast, Sunnyside’s Detroit Pizza is the way to go. It took countless hours to form the recipe, which uses Colorado-milled organic flour and goes through a double proofing process. This lets the dough rise into a fluffy texture that’s far lighter than the deep dish style of Chicago, without giving up the crispy outer crust. Any of Sunnyside’s nine pizza options can be ordered Detroit style. Brunch lovers also have a home at Sunnyside Supperclub, in the form of pizza. For a meal that’ll make you rethink breakfast-lunch stigmas, try out their Egg Pizza. Upon arrival, you’ll find three eggs, bacon, and a few different cheeses baked right into their signature dough. To finish it off, the crust is brushed with their locally-sourced garlic olive oil. While the Detroit pizza is a bit thicker in texture, the Egg Pizza is Neapolitan style. In other words, the crust is thinner

and crisp, but not so crunchy. It’s also not overly topped or weighed down with ingredients which gives you the perfect ratio of crust, cheese, and ingredients with each bite. Sunnyside Supperclub also has 30 beer taps to choose from, and holds strong relationships with Denver Beer Co. and Diebolt Brewing right down the street. Their wine list has some Italian options that pair nicely with a Chicken Parmesan or pizza, plus wines from California and France. If you’re not too picky, opt for their house red or white on draft. Their staff suggests pairing white wine with their white pizza, which has no red sauce, or a red wine with their red sauce options. For a meal that’ll haunt you for the next week, don’t hesitate to drop by Sunnyside Supperclub off of 44th Avenue. Visit their website at sunnysidesc.com to order online or book a reservation this upcoming weekend.

La Patisserie Francaise ALWAYS FROM SCRATCH

ARTICLE BY MONTY MONTGOMERY PHOTOGRAPHY BY TAYLOR DAVENPORT

Baking from scratch is always preferred. After all, why buy a packaged Starbucks croissant or frozen Safeway cake when you can get the real thing, from a real bakery? Sadly, finding pastries that are truly made from scratch can feel like a wild goose chase. That is, unless you’ve visited La Patisserie Francaise off of Wadsworth Boulevard in Arvada. The shop has been around for over 32 years and was previously in an open-air farmer’s market in Aurora, before shifting to a brick-and-mortar space in Arvada. Sadie bought it a decade ago in 2012, with July being her 10-year ownership anniversary. Sadie, who has over a decade of baking experience, learned the craft after leaving a corporate role. When asked about her inspiration to bake professionally, she says, “Baked goods make most people happy.

20

They’re bought for celebrations, birthdays - really, anything positive. It’s so much more fulfilling than the environmental consulting job I had before.” The art of baking truly caught Sadie’s attention with her at-home projects. She’d often bake cakes at home for various celebrations, and soon found it to be her true passion. Sadie wanted to buy La Patisserie in particular since the shop was known for making everything from scratch, which reminds her of home: “Back where I’m from, everything, even the dough, is made from scratch. It just felt like home.” Prior to owning La Patisserie, Sadie found early

success as a not-so-amateur baker. She took home an award for Denver's Sweet Times in the Rockies Cake Show with her 3D pheasant cake. Years before that victory, she baked a 3D rooster cake to scale to win the Denver County Fair’s cake competition. Now, she’s using her skills to render La Patisserie the neighborhood bakery of choice in and around Arvada. La Patisserie differentiates itself not only with its from-scratch ideology, but also its dough treatment. Croissant dough is laminated to make it nice and flaky, which is a traditional method that’s lost on modern bakeries that are focused CONTINUED >

on churning out products. According to Sadie, “Most bakeries will buy croissant and puff dough prefabbed and manipulate it to a certain shape, but they won’t actually make it from scratch. We’re from scratch from the start.” The shop also has an edible image printer that prints decals directly onto cookies, chocolates, macarons, and more. It’s especially popular for weddings, birthdays, and birth announcements that call for a congratulatory edible message. Sadie is most proud of La Patisserie’s custom cakes, especially their “to-scale” options. As an expert in to-scale baking with her 3D pheasant and rooster accomplishments, Sadie is accustomed to rendering cakes both delicious and awe-inspiring. Their pastries are also popular among customers and staff, especially their buttery croissants and Napoleons. Napoleons are especially popular

among European customers, many of whom say it’s the best they’ve had since leaving home. After a decade of successful operations, Sadie stresses how vital her staff is. The shop employs around 15 people, many of whom dropped during COVID and have since returned. You’ll find yourself ordering from mostly young adults - sophomores, juniors, and seniors from local Arvada high schools. What’s more, most of Sadie’s staff has been with her for over a year. Such a low turnover is unheard of in the baking industry, Sadie says, “I couldn’t do this without my staff, any of them. I couldn’t be more

grateful for their help day in and day out.” Sadie and her team pride themselves on their scratchmade pastries and community impact as Arvada’s neighborhood bakery. Whether you’re looking for a delectable French pastry, breakfast danish, mouth watering cookies, or a custom cake, La Patisserie Francaise is your one-stop bakery shop. Stop by 7885 North Wadsworth Boulevard to say hello to Sadie and sample their work in person. You can also visit their website at lapatbakery.com to browse their full menu, or call (303) 424-5056 with any custom requests.

What do you get when you mix an inflatable bounce house with a 220-inch movie theater screen, delivered straight to your home or venue? In short, a world of possibilities. Whether you’re putting on a block party for the cul de sac, a birthday gathering for a loved one, or a gaming tournament for the neighborhood gamers, Galaxy Flicks has you covered. Owners Danny and Shirley rent out two inflatable movie theater-grade screens with speakers, both 14-feet tall and 220 inches diagonally, for a range of events and celebrations. What’s more, each screen features four HDMI ports that allow them to split into quadrants. You can hook up multiple consoles for multiplayer gaming, or put on four different football games for a fantasy night to remember. Danny, who moved to Denver with Shirley and their children in 2017, ran a similar business in Ohio called Columbus Movie Night. His inspiration is simple: providing fun for his kids, and now the surrounding Denver community. He says, “I’ve always been focused on fun, and love overdoing things for my kids. I just wanted to do something fun and memorable.” Back in Ohio, which hosts a big tailgate scene, the duo would use their screens for football games and other sporting events. Still, it was mostly a side business before

the family came to Denver, where business started to kick up. With summer winding down, Danny and Shirley are getting creative for their offseason this fall and winter. Business booms from May through October, but once fall rolls around, business starts to fall off. Hosting an outdoor movie night during the winter months isn’t ideal, after all. Even the late summer months make showings more difficult; it needs to be dark outside for the screen to work, and around August, the sun doesn’t set until after 8:00 p.m. To counter these seasonal gaps in business, the duo is aggressively planning to bring outdoor parties indoors. According to Danny and Shirley, churches and schools with auditoriums will be their ticket to off-season movie and gaming nights: “We need auditoriums and bigger spaces that can house large groups. We’re actually looking to work with local after school programs with video game parties on-campus, during snack and lunch breaks. The possibilities are far and wide.” For more information on Galaxy Flicks, what they offer, and how it works, visit their website at galaxyflicks.com. Go to the “dark side” with this design that requires matte black paint, white paint, some metallic paint (for an out-ofthis-world vibe) and some newspapers. Be careful—this one could get messy!

+

Leave your stems natural or cover with metallic paint if desired. Then, coat your mini pumpkins in matte black paint— be sure to cover everything!

+

You can leave some matte black, but for an extra touch, lay out newspaper and splatter your white paint onto some of your black pumpkins. Bonus—as long as you catch it before it dries, any paint should be easily removed with some warm water.

Start with several mini pumpkins. (We prefer to use fake ones so you don’t have to worry about leaving them out too long!) You’ll also need some white paint, metallic paint and black paint. Twine is optional to add a slightly rustic vibe to the stems.

Paint all of the stems with black paint and wrap some with twine if desired. Then, create several different looks with combina-

Don’t feel limited to solid colors! Experiment here with different patterns and textures (like painting over lace or using a sponge to apply paint instead of a brush), and add some extra sparkle with glitter!
