The Joy of the Holidays
December 2023 PUBLISHER
Abby Miller | abby.miller@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
Kearsten Kopf | kearsten.kopf@citylifestyle.com
The joy of the holidays is a feeling that brings people together and fills their hearts with warmth and happiness. It's a time of year when we can take a break from our busy lives and reconnect with loved ones, making cherished memories that will last a lifetime. During the holiday season homes in Westlake are adorned with lights and decorations, creating a sense of magic and wonder. Community events and festivities are everywhere in Westlake and they bring our community and the wonderful people who live here together. The aroma of holiday food and baked goods fill our homes while families gather around to exchange gifts and share laughter. But the true meaning of the holidays extends beyond these traditions. It's a time for gratitude and giving, a chance to show kindness and compassion to those in need. Whether it's donating to a local charity, volunteering your time, or simply offering a helping hand to a neighbor, the holidays remind us of the importance of generosity and selflessness. Above all, the holidays are a time to reflect on the blessings in our lives and express gratitude for the love and togetherness that surrounds us. It's a time to let go of our worries and embrace the spirit of joy, love, and peace. A time to be present in the moment. So, as the holiday season approaches, let us cherish the moments spent with loved ones, savor the delicious food, and create memories that will warm our hearts for years to come. May the joy of the holidays bring happiness, love, and peace to all.

Eleanor and Hobbs BOUTIQUE
Tracy Hobbs is the founder and owner of Eleanor and Hobbs. She and her team opened their doors in Boulder County Colorado in the summer of 2013 and expanded to their storefront in Rocky River, Ohio in February 2022. Together they have created a unique community where women come together to shop, laugh, create memories, and share their lives. Tucked in the corner of a timeless Rocky River plaza, the ladies at Eleanor and Hobbs have been hard at work for the last twenty-one months building a community of like-minded women who appreciate style and fashion. Let's take a dive into what makes Eleanor and Hobbs a must-visit shopping experience in Rocky River. Eleanor and Hobbs takes pride in offering a carefully curated collection of contemporary fashion, sourced from wellknown and local designers. Each season, Tracy and her team travel to New York and Los Angeles to scour the markets for the latest trends and emerging designers. They work tirelessly to build a curated collection of clothing, jewelry, and accessories. Most recently, the Eleanor and Hobbs team picked up Nili Lotan, a timeless designer who is not represented in Cleveland. They chose timeless lifestyle pieces that will take any woman from day into night, in style. From high-end brands to moderate price points, there truly is something for everyone. Their most popular piece in the store is a $30 heart bracelet that makes the most perfect gift. sustainability practices, and prices to offer their clients the best product on the market. They are the antithesis of fast fashion. Most of their pieces are made in the United States and will last until you decide to pass them on. “We hope that each piece you find at Eleanor and Hobbs becomes one of your favorites. We choose specific pieces from each designer’s collection with our clients in mind, and are focused on finding well-made, special, and thoughtful pieces. We get excited about bringing new fashion to Rocky River and the Greater Cleveland area each and every season. “ - Tracy Hobbs. Their specialty lies in denim, a nod to their roots in Colorado and the casual lifestyle of Boulder County. “We love buying on both coasts because we get to select pieces that have the cool laid-back vibe of California, and the “on the go” pace of New York City. We work hard to create the perfect balance of event wear, wardrobe essentials and on-trend styles.” - Tracy Hobbs. Their services even expand beyond their storefront, curating style boxes and creating a personal shopping experience at home. The boutique's thoughtful team of stylists works hard to assess your style, help you find great pieces and make you feel confident. Reach out to one of their stylists to arrange a style box delivery or stop into the store to check out their incredible space! Chef Dennis Prescott Talks Falling in Love with Feeding People and the Connection Food Creates Whether you know him from the Netflix hit Restaurants on the Edge or from his absolutely mouth-watering food photos as @dennistheprescott on the ‘gram, this former-musician turned internationally-renowned Chef is an amazingly talented, thoughtful, and globe-trotting force to be reckoned with. When it comes to inspiration for creating experiences around food and your community, as well as creating travel bucket lists to some of the world’s
most unique and delicious destinations off the beaten path, Chef ‘Dennis The Prescott’ is a culinary change maker whose feed you’ll want to feast on. Originally an aspiring musician, Canadian-born Dennis Prescott’s journey began while in university with a single invitation from another solo musician who asked him to tour with him around the US. This eventually took him to Nashville where they began making records and pursuing their musical dreams. In the midst of all of this eating take out, dollar menus, etc, had become a way of life for Dennis. A friend stressed that he needed to start taking care of himself, and the advice was simple: “You need to start eating better.” He knew his bad eating habits weren’t good for mind, body or spirit, but he didn’t know where to begin to make changes. However, Prescott thought to himself, “I KNOW good food because I have literally traveled all over America, all over Canada, and into Europe with my music, eating great food and learning what I like.”

The St ar t Dennis went to a nearby library and borrowed three books only to have his friend ask why he chose those in particular. Dennis remembers saying verbatim, “I don’t know? The guy on the cover looks kinda good looking, and I feel like I could probably pull these recipes off, and he seems really happy too!” As it turned out they were three books by Jamie Oliver; it’s just that he had no idea who Jamie Oliver was at the time.

T R E N D SE T T E R | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
Flash forward and Dennis’ first dinner-hosting experiment was made up of twenty people from the music studio, all sitting in camping chairs with beer koozies and makeshift tables in his apartment. “I remember at the time this moment of, okay, the food is on the table, it’s a stressful thing, and then everybody tucks in and they take their first bite, and there’s a moment of hush that kind of came over everyone; it got really quiet just for a second, and then everyone started talking and getting into it and I fell in love with food right there at that moment. I didn’t realize that you can create these beautiful experiential moments at the table in the same way that I did playing someone’s favorite love song. Knowing that that was a thing to me was the most fascinating thing in the world.” Dennis even got to the point where he was cooking so much that he started to forget what recipes he had successfully made, so he began a photo journal and started taking photos of all his completed dishes. And so it began like it does for most; Dennis began posting food photos to Instagram for the next few years. “All of that was initially with no agenda, no intentionality; I just loved it and I wanted to share. I fell in love with feeding people.” Regarding social media, Dennis’s professional advice is to check your DMs. A person who worked at Food & Wine Magazine at the time sent him a DM, asking if he would do recipes for the magazine, which turned into writing a monthly column. That experience helped him land a cookbook deal, which led to a wealth of TV and media publicity and Dennis feels he owes a lot of his success to that first opportunity with Food & Wine Magazine. Oh, and did we mention he is a self-taught photographer who now does all of his own food shots? This guy has drive. His drive and innate talents ultimately led him to the opportunity of a lifetime via another DM. This time, it was a Netflix executive producer who offered him the chance to work for two seasons on Restaurants on the Edge, a show where “three food and design experts travel the world to revive failing restaurants by connecting them to the local culture beyond their gorgeous views.“ What followed were 13 episodes over nine months where they traveled to and filmed restaurant revivals that included three in Canada, one in the continental US, one in Hawaii, and others outside of North America, including Hong Kong, Slovenia, Austria, Malta, St. Lucia and Finland.
Travel Recom mend at ions for Foodies “Slovenia borders Italy and Croatia, which is to say there are a lot of shared values in and around food; they have really great cheese, dairy, beef, pasta, but very few tourists, hardly any. So if you love Italy, that kind of specific travel and food experience, particularly Northern Italy, because you can see the Alps from where they are. It’s picture perfect, a beautiful place, and also where orange wine is from.” Dennis also highly recommends Costa Rica, Hawaii and Finland. “Most people love the idea of travel, but we tend to pick the same places when we travel, and there is nothing wrong with that, they are amazing for a reason, but when you get off the beaten path a little bit, you learn the difference between vacation and travel.” One of the most common fears Dennis hears from people cooking and/or grilling at home is, ‘where do I start? I don’t know how to get going, so I just don’t.’ Rather than overcomplicating it, Dennis recommends cooking the things that bring you joy — things that are on a restaurant menu you can’t NOT order because you’re so pumped that those dishes are on there. “Find the things that you love. Take the stress out of food. Feed people because all they really care about is spending time with you. Bring joy back into the kitchen.”

Tips for creating the perfect board: • Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first. • Be sure to have enough to fill the space. it is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more. • Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement. • Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.
Holiday Wreath Charcuterie Board • • • • •
Fig Jelly Honey Variety of Cheeses Salami or meat of choice Olives (provide a variety)
• Walnuts, Pecans, Pistachios and any favorite nut • Grapes, berries, persimmon • Crackers
Place the jars of sauces and olives on the board first. Next place the cheeses on opposing sides. Add meats and fruits next. Layer in crackers, nuts and seeds and fill in any spots with extra nuts. Use fresh Rosemary or fresh greenery to add wreath accent in the center of the charcuterie board. Garnish with fresh cranberries.

The City Lifestyle
Giving Campaign
2023 30
G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE
“
This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
