LIFESTYLE LETTER
Have you ever wondered, “Do fathers matter? What differences do I make in my home as a dad?” Let’s start with the simple answer — the importance of a father is tremendous! Fathers make countless differences in their homes and family. However, how much impact you decide to make as a dad is entirely up to you!
In my earliest days, one of my favorite memories of my dad is hanging out in the garage, tinkering with one of his vehicles, listening to ZZ Top or Led Zeppelin. As I grew older, he could be found in the stands of every single swim meet. The phrase, “the days are long and the years are short,” is never truer than when considering my time with my father.
As you’ll see in this issue, we celebrate the men who not only make a difference in their family’s lives but also their community’s well-being. You drive by these businesses every day, perhaps wondering what it is they do! We hope you enjoy a peek behind the curtain, as they share what inspires them and brings them joy, and just how much they enjoy enriching the local community.
Let your father or a father figure in your life know how much he matters to you. And if you are a dad, let us be the first to say - thank you. You are invaluable to the people who know and need you as well, as the community around you.
Happy Father’s Day!

Learning to fly was a goal of mine that for one reason or another always seemed just out of reach. The flexibility and options that Fly LUGU provides made my goal achievable and at age 59, I successfully attained my Private Pilots License! The family atmosphere and team approach that Rika and her staff demonstrate is the “secret ingredient” that I believe made the path to success all the more enjoyable and rewarding.
WHAT
I handle all matters involving civil litigation and personal injury, with a specialty in medical malpractice. I’ve handled a wide variety of serious personal injury cases including accidents arising overseas, complex class action suits, and wrongful death medical malpractice matters.
I started developing a personal injury/malpractice practice at my last firm, about 10 years ago now. Malpractice cases can take anywhere between three and five years to resolve or go to trial. So, it ended up being an area to which they really didn’t want to devote the time and expense. Having built up a sizable caseload, and enjoying the work, the next logical thing to do was to open my own firm. I haven’t looked back since.
Do it. It’s a scary leap to make, especially if you’ve been tied to a weekly pay check all your life. However, there is nothing more rewarding than becoming your boss and having complete control of your success.
The majority of my cases, unfortunately, involve a traumatic life altering event for my clients. Clients come to me at a time of need, where they don’t know where to turn next. I truly enjoy providing guidance and counsel, and seeing them obtain a successful resolution for the trauma, pain and suffering they have been through.
There’s nothing better than supporting your own home town. Professionally, there are a number of great lawyers in Westfield, practicing in areas in which I don’t. When I’m asked for a recommendation, referring them to a Westfield attorney is my top priority. Personally, we love supporting all of Westfield’s small businesses, including the local breweries, boutiques, restaurants, mechanics and of course this magazine!

Celebrating 25 years on May 1st, Kitchens Direct, Inc, is a family-owned and operated local business. Established in 1998 by Rich and Diane Metivier, the company has been serving the building industry in New England for decades.
Rich and his son Eric Metivier provide hands-on personalized experiences to bring each customer their dream kitchen. This business model has earned Kitchens Direct a reputation as one of the top design companies and stoneworks in Western Massachusetts. “We take very seriously what we do, and I think it shows. That’s why our builders and renovation contractors refer their clients to us. We are very detail-oriented, and we want our kitchen to fit perfectly and be done right - the first time,” Rich shares.
The company delivers on the whole package - from initial design consultation in the showroom, to the job site field measure, to the finished design and installation. “Best of all, Eric has mastered 3D computer design and our customers can view their final kitchen in full color on our big screen TV. . .showing their cabinets, countertops, windows, flooring and lighting before purchasing. . .and that is priceless.”
Speaking of countertops, Kitchens Direct has the largest display of full stone slabs of any showroom in Western Massachusetts. “Come and see our large selection of quartz and granite! It is so much better than making your
choice from a 4” x 4” or 10” x 10” sample piece,” Rich emphasizes.
With their decades long experience, Rich and Eric know ALL about stone and choosing the right color to pair with the cabinetry. “Kitchens Direct also carries top quality granite sealers and cleaners, to take care of your investment.” And, they are open to the public! “Visit our showroom, and we’ll address every question that you have. We’ll give you straight answers, and the answers are very important. When you buy a stone countertop, you want to be absolutely sure it’s the right choice for you, and we help you do that,” Rich shares.
Diane thinks back to their early days of getting the business off the ground. “I can remember when we first started. We were doing deliveries on a Sunday at a new construction site, just the two of us, in the rain. I’m standing there in the mud. We had the determination and the willpower to just do what we had to do,” Diane reminisces.
Rich and Diane will never forget losing their first showroom due to a snow load roof collapse on February 2, 2011. The purchase of a new 3,300 square foot building at 945 Southampton Rd in Westfield was the silver lining! They worked 7 days a week to finish the build out of their new showroom, completing it in only 5 months.
And now, 25 years later, Rich shares that “as each year goes by, we feel a great amount of responsibility to our customers. This gives us a significant amount of pride.”

“Visit our showroom, and we’ll address every question that you have. We’ll give you straight answers, and the answers are very important.”
I was born and brought up, the youngest of four sons, in Westerly, Rhode Island, a mile and a half from the beaches of Weekapaug.
I graduated from Alfred University, in western New York State (where there were two seasons – the snowy season and the fourth of July) with a degree in Political Science and a teaching certificate.
Teaching, at least in a school setting, never happened. I worked as an Executive for the Boy Scouts of America, starting in Reading, PA, and taking a promotion to a council in western Massachusetts. In order to advance in professional Scouting, it is usually necessary to relocate. At the time, we (my wife and two sons) were settled in Agawam and Nancy informed me that I could move, but that she and the boys were
staying here. One of my Scouting volunteers had recently bought a promotional products (at the time called Advertising Specialties) distributorship and I went to work for him. That lasted 15 years, during which I learned much about business and about promotional products.
In 2001, I bought CHH Engraving. At the time, it was a small trophy shop, owned by a retired engineer and teacher, as something to occupy his retirement and generate income for his and his wife’s frequent vacations. (He would put all his expenses on a frequent flyer credit card, then use the points for travel.)
Over the past 22 years, we have continued to provide excellence in adult awards – plaques and trophies for ballroom dance competitions and college, university and other
employees, staff, and volunteer recognition. Despite the name indicating “engraving”, a large portion of our business is all manner of branded products - any product that can be printed, embroidered or engraved, to help businesses, schools, colleges, and organizations to identify, promote and recognize.
I continue to teach, in a less formal setting, educating people of the benefits of promotional marketing, involvement in my church youth programs, Scouting particularly when the boys (both Eagle Scouts) were involved, Junior Achievement and the Agawam Rotary Club (President 2008-2009, 2020-2022).
ARTICLE BY JOHN BARBER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAT KATTLER PHOTOGRAPHYSARAT FORD LINCOLN
CELEBRATES 94 YEARS
ARTICLE BY MAUREEN SULLIVAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH JOSEPHINE PHOTOGRAPHYJohn Sarat was a farmer in Southwick, but any chance he could get, he would spend time at the service station near his home, help around the station and tinker with cars. He was so interested in cars, that he would go to the library and read books on auto mechanics.
John would later open his own service station and began selling cars. In 1929, he bought a Ford franchise and Sarat Ford – now Sarat Ford Lincolnin Agawam, opened for business. The Lincoln franchise was added in 2010.
The original location of Sarat Ford, now a park, was on the opposite street corner from today’s showroom at 245 Springfield St. John Sarat later moved the dealership to where Sarat Ford Lincoln body shop and commercial vehicle sales are currently located.
While the dealership John Sarat founded has expanded over the years, his grandson Jeff, who is the general manager of Sarat Ford Lincoln, says that although many things have changed at the dealership, what has remained the same is the Sarat's dedication to customer service.
“Back then, when my grandfather founded the business, he brought the car to your house, and sometimes he had dinner with people, or maybe a cocktail,” Jeff said.
Fast forward to 2023, with 110 employees including 20 salespeople, and a shop with 25 technicians, parts and service staff, Sarat Ford Lincoln still makes house calls. Although they might not stay for dinner or cocktails, Sarat staff will pick up a customer’s car when it needs service and then deliver it back to them.
Sarat goes the extra mile with a mobile service van that will travel to a customer’s home or workplace to do oil changes and other routine service that doesn’t have to be done in the shop.
Jeff said that the mobile service van can also handle reprogramming of a vehicle’s computer, which is very easy to do remotely, as well as many recall services. “It frees up our technicians to do the bigger jobs,” he added. The mobile service is so popular that Sarat has ordered a second mobile service van.
For service that must be performed at the dealership, Sarat offers customers convenient options with a loaner car or a shuttle service to their home or office. “It’s all about making things very easy for the customer. It’s all about service,” Jeff said.
So easy, in fact, that to buy a car, you never need to visit the showroom. During the height of Covid, Jeff said Sarat was selling cars all over the country. Paperwork is emailed to the customer, who DocuSigns it and the sale is completed.
The Sarats and their employees make sure excellent customer service is at the heart of their business. Jeff’s dad Jack, works every day, 7 days a week, Jeff said – even if it’s a Sunday, he stops in.
Some employees have been with Sarat Ford Lincoln for 20 years or more. One truck salesman has been with the dealership for 35 years and another employee is marking 40 years. “If you’re going to come work for us, you’re going to stay with us,” remarked Jeff. “Once you come to work for us, if you’re doing a great job, we promote you. If not, we educate and train you.”
“Where Customers Become Friends,” is more than the Sarat Ford-Lincoln tagline. Jeff said it’s easy to buy a new car when you come back to the dealership and see the same
salesperson who sold you a car before. Salespeople stay in touch with customers over the years, sending them birthday and Christmas cards.
While customer service has not changed, cars certainly have. Jeff said technology is changing fast – hands-free driving is now available on some Lincoln models, and if the check engine light is on, drivers will get a text on their phone to tell them what service needs to be done.
“Vehicles are so much safer now, and so much more powerful,” Jeff said. Much safer and more powerful than John Sarat could have ever imagined back in 1929.

When Chris Thompson, owner of the Westfield Starfires, founded the city’s summer collegiate baseball team in 2019, there was no blueprint to follow. In just five years, the team has made a significant impact on the community and has achieved numerous milestones, on and off the field. The Starfires, who play in the Futures League (a wooden bat summer collegiate baseball league in New England), have propelled athletes to the pros, all while becoming a beloved fixture of the Westfield community.
Last summer, the Starfires saw two standouts taken in the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft. Alumnus Reggie Crawford was drafted in the 1st round (30th overall) by the San Francisco Giants and Pat Gallagher was drafted in the 11th round (338th overall) by the Toronto Blue Jays. “I think it’s a great opportunity for players in the Futures League to compete at this level for 64 games in front of MLB scouts.”
The 5th anniversary season, presented by Westfield Bank, will kick off with two “Kids
There are many theme nights to take place at the ballpark this season. The fan favorite will again be the WG&E Post-Game Fireworks Show on Friday, June 9th. Last summer, 2,000 fans attended to make it one of the largest crowds in the history of Bullens Field. “It was standing room only. We were packed like sardines,” Thompson said.
A new partnership with the North Elm Butcher Block will significantly upgrade the Starfires concession operation. “Dan Puza has taken his business to a new level, so we plan to offer all the Butcher Block favorites. He’s got a smoker - so brisket, pulled pork sandwiches, bases-loaded fries, mac and cheese bowls and sausage dogs, to name a few. It was imperative to take the fan experience to the next level, especially concessions. This is a game changer.”
The best-selling beer at the ballpark, the Starfires IPA, will also be back. On Saturday, July 29th, fans will be able to sample the IPA, as well as local craft brews, at “Get Drafted,” a pre-game Bullens Brewfest in the beer garden.
Making a comeback is the Starfires Summer Camp for two weeks in July for boys and girls ages 6-12. The Starfires themselves will have 10 returning players, as well as manager Kyle Dembrowski and Vice President of Baseball
Operations Hunter Golden. Seth Dussault will return to the mic as the “Voice of the Starfires” on the Futures League Network.
The Starfires will continue to offer fan experiences to youth sports organizations, among other groups, including on-field recognition and in-between inning promotions. Thompson said that over the years, he has continued his appreciation for the marketing partnerships that have kept the team running. “We have a very strong corporate base here in Western Massachusetts. I think from the outset, the goal was to be connected with the community, the city of Westfield, and beyond. I think franchises like ours around the country are only successful if you have community support.”
In recognition of the team’s ties with Barnes Air National Guard Base, the Starfires earned the FCBL Community Relations Award last year for its Military Appreciation Game to support the 104th Fighter Wing. The team itself was named after the Lockheed F-94 Starfire. Mascot Stanley Starfire, a lovable black squirrel character, is the namesake of Stanley Park. “It was important from inception to pay homage to the local community to help tell our story.”
