LIFESTYLE LETTER

Where The Sidewalk Ends When is the last time you did something for the first time - for fun? We live in an era that glorifies productivity. And I admit it - I fall into the trap sometimes, too. It’s the illusion of believing that the only things worth doing are actions for which I can calculate the exact amount of time, effort, and investment it will cost me. Most notably, I willingly partake in things that result in the highest return and level of control, with the least amount of uncertainty. But the truth is - that is an unfulfilling way to enjoy life. We must leave room for exploring, trying new things, being a beginner, and getting lost. It is the times that are unstructured, unrestricted, and open-ended where creative space exists for new connections to be made. It's where the art of possibility lives. The stories in this issue spotlight local businesses who explore ways to contribute to the community, whether it's with new sounds, flavors, or opportunities to make a positive impact in town. The Greater Westfield Boys & Girls Club finds new ways to serve our city and provide support to children in need. We speak to the staff about their efforts to create a safe and nurturing environment for young people to learn, grow, and thrive. PARTY of 2 is a local acoustic band driven to explore musical territories that delight the crowd from rock to pop to country, and one-hit wonders. Sippin' on a beer while you enjoy their songs? You can probably thank Commercial Distributing Company for that! They are on a mission to bring us new brews and beverages from around the world. We speak to the team about their passion for the industry and the journey bringing unique products to the Western Mass market. If CBD is more your thing, hear about how Sunmed | Your CBD Store in Southwick highlights the benefits of this emerging industry and how they are working to educate the public about its potential uses. Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time (because we truly cannot "make" it) away from the regular hustle and bustle of life for the things - and people - that matter most to you, but often come last on the list. If April showers bring May flowers, make time to play in the rain or stop and smell the roses. Here’s your reminder to - and I say this with warmth in my heart - take a hike!

For kids who enjoy reading, they can spend 15 minutes a day in the Education Room, where they can read anything that interests them. This opportunity helps to ensure that reading skills don’t lag during the summer, according to Kellie Brown, Chief Operating Officer. For the remaining 25 minutes a child spends in the Education Room, a STEM curriculum is offered, Kellie says. The STEM program leads into technology, which can be as simple as teaching children how to use a keyboard or more advanced like a Lego-driven robotics program. The Social Recreation component of each day brings kids together to learn team-building skills through playing board games and participating in group activities such as pool and polypong – a game that is a combination of Four Square and Ping-pong. Then there are weekly field trips to children’s museums, art museums, and other places that add to each child’s experience at Kidscape. Adventures that take place at the Boys and Girls Club include Mad Science and Zoo on the Go. In addition to the other activities, all summer program attendees can swim in the facility’s newly renovated indoor pool. For each activity or program, children are grouped by age. On average, more than 300 children attend Kidscape at any given time during the summer, and they can come for any length of time – from one or two weeks or the entire summer, Kellie shared. Parents pay a weekly fee of $235. Breakfast, lunch, and the cost of field trips are included in the weekly fee. Kellie said that Seven Hills Vouchers are accepted for the cost of Kidscape and financial assistance is also available. During the summer the Boys and Girls Club also offers a food program that addresses food insecurity. The program services 10 local sites, which are listed on the Boys and Girls Club website. All meals are prepared at the Boys and Girls Club and meet USDA guidelines. The meals are offered free of charge to children ages 2-18. On Fridays, the children get not only the meal of the day, but also a Weekend Backpack which includes two breakfasts and two lunches. For more information on Kidscape or to register your child, visit the BGC website.

PARTY OF 2 CELEBRATES 10 YEARS ARTICLE BY MAUREEN SULLIVAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH JOSEPHINE PHOTOGRAPHY

THE PERFECT BACKDROP FOR ANY OCCASION

PARTY of 2 Andrew Banas & Keri Klee 22

B ACK STAGE | ARTS + CULTURE

Keri Klee and Andrew Banas Keri Klee and Andrew Banas are the voices of PARTY of 2, the acoustic duo that has been entertaining people at public and private events throughout the area for the last 10 years. The two became friends after meeting while both were performing with the Westfield Community Theater. As a little girl in Hershey, PA, Keri played piano then switched to the trumpet and played for many years; she was also in chorus and involved in dance. Her childhood included frequent trips to Broadway. Her mother, she said, has a beautiful voice and while Keri was growing up, she was always singing. Keri went on to study musical theater in college and had a career in theater before having her three children. Years later she would add another instrument when she picked up the guitar.

She missed performing and wanted to do something that would work around her busy schedule. She asked Andrew if he wanted to get together and make music. Andrew - who plays guitar, keyboard, sings, and has been in more than one rock band - was game. He grew up listening to rock bands of the 70s and 80s and even played drums for a while. Learning to play guitar didn’t come until later in his life. Andrew was born and raised in Westfield. Aside from a few college years spent earning his Engineering degree at University of Arizona, Andrew has always called Western Massachusetts his home. Keri and Andrew began rehearsing, deciding on the music they wanted to perform, and soon PARTY of 2 hit

a high note when the duo found themselves playing at events two or three nights a week. You may have heard them play at businesses around Westfield, throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut, and at notable venues such as MGM Springfield and the Big E. “We play at venues that are family-friendly and multi-generational,” Keri shared. For that reason, PARTY of 2’s playlist includes music from different decades, but Keri added that she and Andrew are always working on new set lists. In fact, they have a catalog of hundreds of songs, “but we are always adding more,” she added. “The perfect backdrop for any occasion” is the PARTY of 2 slogan. If the events and venues where they play are any indication, then it’s fitting. Keri and Andrew play at private parties and events of all types including family reunions, celebrations of life, birthday parties, and weddings. What makes the duo unique is the spin they take on well-known songs. They highlight the harmony of their voices – always looking for different ways to sing popular songs from the 1950s to today. PARTY of 2’s playlist includes rock, country, classics, one-hit wonders, pop, and love songs. Asked if they have a favorite song, Keri mentions both she and Andrew love to play “Ventura Highway” by America... with PARTY of 2’s own twist of course! If you have heard PARTY of 2 perform, you’ll know that the duo has a tradition of opening each performance with “Savannah Fare You Well” by Jimmy Buffet and closing with “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” by Bon Jovi and Jennifer Nettles – creating their own spin on the original recordings with their vocal harmonies. “Ten years is a huge milestone,” Keri enthused. “We’ve grown so much. We’ve had a lot of adventures, and we’re still playing strong.” To learn more about PARTY of 2, performance dates, or for booking availability, visit Partyof2duo.com.

5 WAYS TO

help birds ARTICLE BY ANDREA BUGBEE

1 2 3 4

Birds have many symbolic meanings in the spring season, representing renewal, rebirth, and the return of life after a long winter. Beginning with fertility and renewal, the arrival and reappearance of migratory birds signifies hope and the start of a new cycle. In many cultures, birds are spiritual messengers that represent the divine. Birds also are a symbol of freedom and independence: they have ability to soar through to great heights and yet many return to their natural habitats, symbolizing the freedom to fly and the choice to return to home. - Virginia Maldonado

KEEP CATS INDOORS It’s estimated that, in the US alone, outdoor cats kill approximately 2.4 billion birds annually. Keep Fluffy indoors. She’ll live a longer, healthier life - and so will birds!

USE DECALS TO STOP WINDOW STRIKES Up to one billion birds die in the US each year by crashing into windows they can’t see. Make large windows more visible by placing decals on them.

BE LAZY ABOUT YOUR LAWN Perfect grass and sprawling lawns deprive birds of food and nesting areas. Turn your yard into a wildlife sanctuary by keeping a smaller lawn with native plants, bushes, trees, and leaf litter around it.

SAY NO TO PESTICIDES & HERBICIDES Grubs, insects, and native weeds are all essential to our food web. Poisoning any part of this web disrupts the entire cycle, not only for birds, but for other animals and humans, too.

WHEN IT’S NIGHT, TURN OFF THE LIGHT Light pollution confuses migrating birds, making their difficult journey downright treacherous. Use motion-sensor lights outside. If you must keep an outdoor light on all night, cap it so the glow goes down, not up.

COMMERCIAL DISTRIBUTING CO.

Commercial Distribution Co. Delivery Trucks

THE PREMIER BEER DISTRIBUTOR IN WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS

ARTICLE BY JANICE BEETLE PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH JOSEPHINE PHOTOGRAPHY

Joseph C. Placek earned a degree as an Electrical Engineer during the Great Depression. He was without a job, so he pivoted and opened a wholesale fruit and vegetable business in a massive warehouse on South Broad Street in Westfield. As his grandson Mark tells the story, Joseph made one more major adjustment years later. He transitioned from vegetables to beer, wine, and spirits - ultimately establishing Commercial Distributing Co., Inc., in 1935. The business still operates out of the same 97,500-square-foot building— with a new 7,500-square-foot cooler added in 2004. This is the same year Mark gained ownership of the family enterprise. His father, Richard, held the lead role since 1978, in tandem with his late brother, Gary. CONTINUED >

Commercial Distribution Co. Warehouse

Commercial Distributing sells products no other distributor is licensed to sell, including those made by Molson, Coors, Miller Light, Sam Adams, Heineken, Amstel, and 500 other major brands. Recently, the company released White Claw Vodka Soda in four new flavors — watermelon, peach, wild cherry and pineapple — and Heineken Silver, a new low-calorie offering. Mark Placek says the family has always placed the highest value on quality customer service. They provide employees with generous benefits and opportunities for growth, making Commercial Distributing Co. a business that stands out in the region. “We are dedicated to our co-workers who exhibit honesty, pride, passion, and professionalism. We are focused on delivering complete customer satisfaction, all while offering extraordinary products,” Placek says. As a testament to employee satisfaction and longevity, Mike Holl started at Commercial Distributing Co. as a warehouse helper in 2001, loading and unloading trucks. He moved up the ranks to driver, warehouse supervisor, field sales manager, and in early February, to his current leadership role as Operations Manager. He says the business delivers its products to 1,100 bars, restaurants, and clubs in all four counties of Western Mass as well as to 400 package stores in the region. It has a fleet of 26 trucks, and just over 100 employees in roles from driver to inventory, shipping, HR, marketing, branding, and management. “We recognize that consumers demand variety and we strive to offer the brands that fulfill that demand,” Holl says. Some of the reasons customers value Commercial Distributing Co. is because the company is responsive and does not charge a delivery fee - even during the pandemic, when gas prices were high. CDC’s merchandisers help customers create signage and displays at no cost. The company organizes free tasting events and provides free promotional materials that customers can use to entice their clientele. “We strive to be the best in the service area,” Holl says. “If you run out of Blue Moon draft on Thursday, you can call us and we’ll make sure you get what you need before the weekend. aren’t a problem either,” he shares. “You can order as little as two cases and we’ll get it to you.” Placek said there have been many milestones over the years. In 1954, the company became a Miller Brewing Company distributor. In 1999, CDC purchased Fahey Beverage, a Miller distributor in Berkshire County. This allowed distribution in that county for the first time. In 2003, the business purchased Burke Beverage (a Coors distributor), and acquired the Coors brands from United Liquors, which allowed growth from 65 to 103 employees. Business success has also translated into solid community partnerships. Commercial Distributing Co. takes part in many annual events, such as The Big E and Festa, the Portuguese festival in Ludlow. The company sponsors everything from youth sports teams to Kiwanis, local police departments, golf tournaments, and Westfield State Athletics. “This is a good family to work for,” Holl says. “Ours is a working partnership — with customers and the community. We like to make sure everyone is happy.” If you’d like to learn more about Commercial Distributing Co., please visit commercialdist.com.

Topical Cream

Having helped in the health and nutrition industry for over 26 years, Lorraine Dennencourt decided to branch out and cultivate a business focusing on holistic healthcare of reputable quality. She cared about opening a store that showcased preventative wellness, was highly-tested and all-organic, and defied the misconceptions of CBD. In 2019, Lorraine became a retailer in Southwick for the Sunmed | Your CBD Store franchise. She worked to establish an expert team and loyal client base ever since. “This is a place where people can get the help they need naturally. You can get sick or addicted to Big Pharma, by taking prescription after prescription, and we want to encourage balance in all areas of health - exercise, diet, and overall lifestyle change,” she encourages. There are misconceptions about CBD and the stores that sell it. These negative connotations are sometimes paired with the perception of “getting high” off products sold at psychedelic smoke shops or seedy gas stations. People worry whether or not the products are safe and tested - or if they even work. Thanks to the versatile line of highgrade, vegan products and the educated staff, patients of Sunmed in Southwick beam with positive experiences and are excited for a lifestyle change. Clients typically come from word-of-mouth referrals and then confide with the store

staff their own various health issues and conditions. “Some share troubles with sleeping - can’t fall asleep, stay asleep, or toss and turn all night - while others struggle with joint issues from arthritis,” Lorraine empathizes. “More isn’t always better. It’s quality - not quantity,” she warmly asserts. The line of Sunmed products is backed by scientists and third-party testing. In fact, the Topical Cream is award-winning body care infused with shea butter, cocoa butter, peppermint, and arnica flower. Sunmed | Your CBD Store offers an array of top-grade tinctures, gummies, softgels, bath bombs, bodycare, and pet products, too. Have a taste for orange or red apple? Sunmed offers a unique product named TRIM in these flavors to help curb appetite and reduce cravings over time with a natural hemp solution. Rise is the line for the daytime, when you want some pep in your step and the clarity of a cup of coffee, without the jitters. When dawn turns to dusk, and you want to wind down before bed, try Sleep - a night-time tincture that tastes like blueberry or blackberry. The CBNplus soothes you naturally, with a blend of valerian root and lavender. The concoction is rich with plant-based terpenes to lull you into a deep, relaxing rest. Try a dose about 30 minutes before bed to begin a peaceful night routine. The health of your fur baby is important, too! That’s why Sunmed offers chews for mobility and relaxation as well as broad-spectrum bacon hearts and steak bites. The mobility chews are formulated with veterinarian guidance and made with hemp and green-lipped mussels for joint support. CBD is healing and its therapeutic qualities help people from all ages and walks of life treat ailments of many kinds. Testimonies from patients and people using CBD include relief from nerve pain, joint arthritis, depression and anxiety, sleep disruptions, and even

CBD stands for cannabidiol (can-uh-bih-dye-ohl) and is kin to the cannabinoid family, a ménage of medicinal chemical compounds that are found naturally in both the human body and cannabis plant. These substances impact our body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is an internal health network that influences the state of our physical and mental well-being. Found in our brains, tissues, and organs, this matrix of seemingly magical receptors are responsible for helping regulate a myriad of health conditions traced to our immune and nervous systems. In essence, reintroducing cannabinoids to the ECS opens a bridge between the body and mind. Thanks to increasing studies, CBD is becoming more popular and safer than ever.

Crave Café WELCOME TO THE #ROUTE10CORRIDOR ARTICLE & MONTHLY @HELLOFOODREVIEWS COLUMN FEATURING ESTABLISHMENTS FROM WESTFIELD TO NORTHAMPTON!

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MADELINE LEBLANC

Welcome to Crave Café - the newest hot spot in Westfield - your craving destination! Home of the bubble tea (24 Elm Street, Westfield), enjoy sweet and savory crepes as well as boba, tea, and more. I cannot believe how beautiful the cafe is - everything is so modern and chic, which is refreshing to see! Owner Alisa Sychev says, “Owning a cafe is something that I’ve dreamed about since I was a little girl. Through different stages of my life, and many different career paths, owning a cafe seemed just that - a dream. But fast forward 20+ years, my husband and I decided to take the biggest risk: to open our own family cafe!” “The passion and excitement were there, but so was the fear,” she admits. “Everyone says that walking away from two established businesses, and taking a risk to open one that is completely new to us both, while raising our 5 kids, is ‘absolutely crazy.’ But we had a vision, and our kids are our biggest motivation. After a year of hard work, sweat and tears, Crave Café is a reality!” Crave Café offers a very cozy modern atmosphere. Even though they are known for delicious bubble tea, and signature sweet and savory crepes, the menu offers more options, including soups, salads, sandwiches, waffles, and charcuterie boards. It’s the perfect “brunch all day” spot - and they are open late. Everything is made in-house from scratch and with lots of love! For more footage head to @hellofoodreviews on Instagram.

FLAXSEEDS: HYPE OR HEALTHY? to 6 months. If flaxseeds taste sour, they are rancid and need replacing.

WHAT’S THE DAILY DOSE?

ARTICLE BY JENNIFER GIFFUNE

Ground flaxseed: 1- 2 tbsp daily Flaxseed oil: 1 tbsp daily

Most people have heard of flaxseeds, but are they a nutrient powerhouse or a gimmick? The answer is - they’re good for you! Flaxseeds are nutrient dense with heart-healthy fat, lignans, and fiber leading to many health benefits: • lower blood pressure, cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides • decrease blood clotting, risk of cancer • blood sugar control • weight management • constipation relief • immune system boost • With all these health benefits, it’s time to explore how to add flaxseeds to your plate.

WHAT DO FLAXSEEDS TASTE LIKE? Flaxseeds have a slightly earthy, nutty flavor and are crunchy. There is a right and wrong way to eat flaxseeds. Humans cannot break down the outer hull of flaxseeds. It needs to be ground to reap the benefits; chewing isn’t enough. Look for milled, ground, or flaxseed meal. You can opt for flaxseed oil too which has more of the heart health components. There is no fiber, so no help with weight, blood sugar or constipation.

Flaxseeds are versatile and simple to include: • Sprinkle into cereal, yogurt, apple sauce • Blend into a smoothie or soup • Mix into ground meat • Add to bread, muffin or cake batter • Replace eggs in baking (1 tbsp of ground flaxseed + 3 tbsp of Water = 1 whole egg) • Liquid flaxseeds – add to dressing or baked goods; bake no higher than 350 degrees and no frying

CAN’T I JUST TAKE A PILL? It is always best to eat foods to get the full health benefit. If you cannot, you can take a pill. Choose one with 1000 – 1400 milligrams of flaxseed oil, taking 1-3 pills daily.

IS THERE A DOWN-SIDE? Too much ground flaxseed can lead to gas, bloating, and constipation. Don’t eat groundflaxseeds straight off a spoon - it’s a choking hazard; always mix with another food. Flaxseed may interact with certain medications such as blood thinners, anti-platelets, and hormone replacement. If you have had an estrogen sensitive cancer, talk to your doctor before starting flaxseed; it has some particles that are similar to estrogen. Finally, pregnant and nursing women are advised to consult with a doctor before using flaxseed.

THE BOTTOM LINE These tiny seeds are full of naturally existing plant chemicals that can help you with heart health, cancer prevention and diabetes management. Time to add flaxseeds to the menu!

HOW TO STORE FLAXSEEDS Keep flaxseeds in a dark container with a tight-fitting lid in the refrigerator; they last up
