LIFESTYLE LETTER

Love Your Neighbor As Yourself I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn. Torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a simple night at home? To gift a token of affection or just say a kind word and perform an act of service? I'm either 0 to 100. You and I will individually arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to cherish this reminder, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight businesses in the communities of Westfield and Southwick. “Love local” means your local businesses - those in our community. 7B’s Bar & Grill is celebrating 10 years of success supported by loyal family, hardworking friends, and local community members who love the handcrafted flavors and hometown feel. Looking for something sweet? Grab a treat from Chrissy G’s Bakery, Sweets by Mahlia, or Firetype Chocolate! For anyone looking to step up and into the best and most beautiful version of themself, visit Beauty and the Brow for your taste of permanent makeup and jewelry. There’s also a guide tucked inside for a quick look at local businesses that the guys might love! While we teeter between the chill of winter and the excitement of spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. Not only the ones in your home but in your neighborhood passing on the street. We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in love for our local businesses month after month. Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like. Our hope is that we inspire you to love more than you did before.

CHRISSY G’S BAKERY ARTICLE BY ANGELA HAYES

A local bakery serving an assortment of pastries and baked goods plus custom confectionaries

Fond memories of baking in the kitchen with my mom and grandma arise as soon as I step into Chrissy G’s Bakery. The delicious aroma of baked goods lingers in the air, mixing with the smell of fresh coffee brewing. Chrissy G’s Bakery is nestled in the middle of Elm Street, marked by a sign with bright purple lettering. It’s a fantastic place to buy a sweet treat to eat while getting homework done or studying. During my visit, I had the pleasure of speaking with the store’s owner, Christine Gustafson, and the manager, Lee. I learned that before opening up her bakery, Christine was a dispatcher. Eventually, she found that baking was a business she could create at home. After doing this for about a year, Christine wanted to expand the business and have her own bakery open up on Elm street. Something unique about Chrissy G’s is that the menu changes weekly! Be on the lookout as it is posted on Instagram and Facebook. I found all of the desserts affordable, ranging in price from $3.00 to $8.00, which is good considering the fact that the portions are large. If you are craving something savory, you could try a handmade sandwich which is typically offered between 11AM-2PM. Recently, over the holidays, charcuterie boards were featured, and Chrissy G’s often offers soups and breads.

If you have ideas for specialty or custom desserts, the staff can create the perfect treat for your next birthday, party, holiday, or event! There are even student discounts applied for those who show their ID at the register. This makes all of the delicious food even more affordable for the average college student who is strapped for cash. Chrissy G’s provides a wonderful environment with incredibly friendly staff members. It makes going into the store that much better. Stop in to Chrissy G’s Bakery (124 Elm Street, Westfield) from Tuesdays 10AM-4PM; Wednesday, Thursday, and Fridays from 10AM-5PM; or Saturdays 9AM-4PM.

7B’S BAR & GRILL BEERS, BURGERS, AND CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES

Bill, John, Jane and Jeff Boisseau

ARTICLE BY MAUREEN SULLIVAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH JOSEPHINE PHOTOGRAPHY

LOCA LS ON LY | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

It all began 10 years ago last November when Bill Boisseau decided to trade his corporate career for the restaurant business. Although Bill had no restaurant experience – he knew where to turn to create a successful business – his son Jeff. After Jeff Boisseau graduated from Johnson and Wales with a degree in restaurant management, he went on to own and operate 15 restaurants, including one in Rhode Island. It was there that his dad walked in the door one day and told him he was leaving his job to buy the old Purple Onion in Westfield. Jeff had just closed one of his restaurants, leaving him time to help his dad transform what had been the Purple Onion into 7B’s – named for Bill Boisseau, his wife Jane and their five children - John, Jeff, Sara, Steve, and Kate. Jeff recalled gutting the entire inside of the building – his uncle Jack was the contractor and they hired local tradesmen. “It was all local people, and we created a buzz even before we opened,” Jeff said.

“ I T ’ S A LWAYS A B O U T THE LOCAL PEOPLE WHO SUPPORT US SOME COME IN 5, 6, O R 7 T I M E S A W E E K .” — J E F F B O I S S E AU

7B’s was an instant hit. “Once the doors opened, it never stopped,” Jeff said, remembering that he and his dad worked “morning, noon, and night until we hired the crew we wanted. Now, we pride ourselves on having some of the best employees in the business. They’re all amazing employees.” Three of 7B’s employees have been with the restaurant since the beginning – John Smith, the first dishwasher hired, is now an integral part of the back of house crew. 10 years later, Kate Warner is still managing the bar and mixing up a list of creative cocktails that change with the seasons, along with bartender/server Hannah Taylor. Jeff is quick to point out that 7B’s is, at its heart, a family business. His brother Steve manages maintenance. Bill supports front of the house and he and Jane come in every morning to clean. Jane whips up daily batches of chocolate chip cookies, known as “Jane’s Chippers.” Lucky are the customers who get one of the complimentary cookies before they are gone each day. Jeff’s twin brother John, also a Johnson and Wales graduate, moved with his family from New York City to join the business. He is part owner of 7B’s, focused on back of house operations and managing the always-changing beer and liquor inventories.

From the beginning, the Boisseaus knew they wanted 7B’s to be a burger bar, but Jeff would not settle for just any burger. “We tried 20-plus burgers with different blends of meat until we found one we liked,” he recalled. The perfect burger? For 7B’s it’s a blend of chuck, sirloin, and brisket, according to Jeff. There are seven different specialty burgers on the menu, and there is always a “Burger of the Month.” Most burgers are served on a brioche roll. The Patty Melt is served on Texas Toast and the Irish Burger on rye bread. Then there’s the Bacon Jam Burger with housemade bacon jam. At 7B’s everything is fresh and homemade – the restaurant has no freezers or microwaves. The rolls and breads are made at a Massachusetts bakery, Jeff noted.

7B’s has 14 drafts available on a rotating basis, and there’s the Mug Club – only 100 numbered mugs are sold and come with some perks. While burgers may take center stage, there are other stars of the show like the Crispy Chicken made with 7B’s own buttermilk put in their own flour dredge, for example. “We’re definitely a sandwich-style hand-held restaurant,” said Jeff, but the menu also features appetizers, soups, the popular Barbecue Chopped Salad, a menu for kids, and a Fish ‘n’ Chip lunch and dinner entrée served Thursday through the weekend. “It rivals any in the area,” Jeff said. What’s next? “We’re always trying something new – it keeps everyone in the business going,” Jeff said. During the pandemic, the restaurant bought a smoker trailer and created a drive-through barbecue. It was so successful that Jeff purchased a second one. Now 7B’s caters weddings and other events. He said they will be putting a big emphasis on freshly made barbecue this spring and summer. 7B’s is really all about family – the Boisseaus and the families who dine there every day are a true testimonial to 10 years of success.

Beauty and the Brow

PERMANENT MAKEUP: EMPOWERING L AIDBACK LUXURY

ARTICLE BY VIRGINIA MALDONADO PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH JOSEPHINE PHOTOGRAPHY

T R E N D SE T T E R | BEAU TY

Melding her passions for beauty and body art, Kelly Miller forged a new way by founding Beauty and the Brow in Southwick, Massachusetts - a safe haven for people seeking a balance between makeup, jewelry, and ink. Beauty and the Brow is much more than a simple salon. Here, clients find harmony between low maintenance luxury and art as life. The studio is a creative space charged with a tattoo parlor meets beauty boutique feel. There is an eclectic combination of florals, teals, and gold contrasted by polished wood and black - it is edgy but warm and welcoming, just like the staff. The technicians here feel like family from the moment you are seated on one of the velvety or leather sofas. The studio hums as the hive goes to work with their continued training - each employee undergoing countless hours of continued education on their craft. Every esthetician commits to a mentorship so they can hone in and refine their repertoire of skills. Beauty and the Brow is a trend-setter. The services offered are not only unique and distinct but increasingly popular. Staple services include permanent eyeliner, lip blushing, and microblading. These are the perfect choices for people looking to define their eyes, color their lips, or fill their brows without having to “do” their makeup daily. Touch-ups are recommended and give clients the chance to choose a new hue to suit their look and mood in the future. One of the most popular offerings is permanent jewelry, where your accessories are welded together rather

than implanted to the skin. Permanent jewelry is a creative service where the client customizes their jewelry piece - a bracelet, necklace, or anklet for example - by selecting their preferred chain and accessories to pair. Options vary from sleek and simple to selections more sassy and bold. The process is fast and pain-free with no piercings required! Appointments for services such as trendy faux freckles and tooth gems are also on the rise. The first uses ink to replicate realistic, natural facial characteristics and the latter its own version of modern day bling. Tooth gems are small jewels subtly added to the smile and come in a sensational array of colors. Both services are fun, long-lasting, and unique. The studio also has openings for classic appointments like eyebrow waxing, lamination, tint, and lash extensions, of course. The workers encourage new (and familiar) faces to stop in for any of the esthetic services available. In fact, Beauty and the Brow is one of the few places in Western Mass that welcomes walk-ins! Beauty and the Brow is also humbled to service women who have triumphed through mastectomy surgery by providing unparalleled 3D areola tattooing. This professional, paramedical-grade service is custom-tailored to help create hyper-realistic results and restore the natural look of women’s breasts after surgery. Women who participate in 3D areola tattooing testify to the strength in feeling like a more beautiful and whole version of themselves. In order to further share their expertise, Beauty and the Brow is an approved partner of the Cancer House of Hope and volunteers time towards the ongoing mission of providing hope and encouragement to the lives of people with cancer. Beauty and the Brow can’t be fit into a box. Permanent makeup (“PMU”) is as equally badass as it is beautiful. It is a blend of cosmetology, aesthetics, and tattoos, and the team here at Beauty and the Brow mirrors this craft with an equal amount of skill, personality, and love for the arts.

We’re not just a salon. We’re a balance between beauty estheticians and body artists who make you feel your best. To book your services or meet the team, stop by the studio or contact Beauty and the Brow by phone or online! 627 College Hwy Suite #5 | Southwick, MA 010755 | (413) 378-4087. Thanks to meticulous ongoing training and a fervent passion for aesthetics, the crew at Beauty and the Brow is a beast. This dream-team is comprised of cosmetology clinicians who are equipped with top-tier training.

Moosewood Restaurant Cookbooks

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MINDY DOW

NOTES FROM AN ECO LIFE COACH

34

I NSP IR E D BY | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S

When I was nineteen years old, I was in my second year of college, switched my major from Biology to English Literature, and landed the best part-time job as a sales associate at Wild Oats Organic Food Co-op, which became Wild Oats Community Market in Williamstown, Massachusetts. WildOats.coop. I loved working there. My colleagues became my mentors, and I learned many life skills I hold onto today. A typical week at Wild Oats in the 1990s looked like this: Conscientious community members discussing environmental issues and hugging each other in the aisles, children chewing on bell peppers like they were apples, NPR’s All Things Considered playing towards closing time, Appalachian folk music playing softly in the background, listening to the flour grinder outback grinding down red wheat berries, the fresh scent of an entire crate of cilantro in the back produce kitchen, and on the first Saturdays of the month, half the staff would carpool together to a contradance after the store closed.

Here, I learned about nutrition, herbs, and supplements to help naturally balance my health. After I graduated from college and moved into my first apartment, the staff gifted me my first cookbook as a housewarming present; Mollie Katzen’s Moosewood Cookbook. This was my work family, and they helped inspire the plant-forward eating I enjoy today. When I think about meal planning and what foods will keep my body running well, I know I can always come back to my Moosewood Cookbooks. Today there are so many vegan options that didn’t exist commercially in the 1990s, so it would be easy to tweak any Moosewood recipe to be vegan or cleaner (fewer or no oils, for example). And if you wanted to add some meat, it would be easy to do that too. Sometimes I overthink meal planning and nutrition planning (‘Does this meal match my dosha? How fattening is this? How long will this take? Is this in season?’ LOL) and when I stop and get quiet to think about the foods that I love that bring me home to myself, I always find true home in my Moosewood Cookbooks. Where do you find your true home and cooking joy? And if you aren’t sure, because these days the options can be overwhelming, I highly recommend starting right here. MollieKatzen. com/Books.php and some other cookbooks can be bought at the Moosewood Restaurant (online store, too), which is a fabulous place to have lunch! She is also Outdoor Faculty at Kripalu in Stockbridge, MA. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from UMASS AMherst.

ELEVATE YOUR CLOSET 8 WAYS TO O R G A N I Z E A N D

Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our eight tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love. A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

USE R EAL ESTATE W ISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

03 04 NEGATIVE SPACE

Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.

FACE CLOTHES THE SA ME DIR ECTION

It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.

BAG & SHOE STOR AGE Alternate the way shoes are facing. This ultimately helps fit more on each row and provide a visually appealing way to display those prized possessions. Everyone understands the frustration of searching for that one clutch when rushing out for the evening. Bags benefit from a space all their own. Get clear container storage for small bags and purses so you can locate and access them easily. CONTINUED > FEBR UARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / W E ST F I E L D

06

UPGR ADED HA NGERS The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:

07 08 LIGHTING

Lighting is everything in a closet. Gone are the days of dim recessed lighting being sufficient. Consider adding a statement lighting fixture like a chandelier or pendant that provides ample bright lighting to your space, no matter how big or small.

M AK E A STATEMENT

Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.
