January 2023 PUBLISHER

Candice Berube | candice.berube@citylifestyle.com

LIFESTYLE LETTER

January is the first chapter to your 365 page novel January is for beginnings, fresh breakaways, and a new look on life and health. Society talks about health using words that dehumanize the person. We often use language that relates humans to machines, and are conditioned to use terms like “full steam ahead,” “running on E,” and “recharge.” In a world where mental health issues are on the rise, I encourage you to rethink how you handle your health. Here in Westfield, we have the support of businesses who have founded their mission on making others healthier, happier, and more whole. Roots Cycle is a boutique indoor cycling studio where you can stoke your inner fire and feel the burn during a group-setting cardio-based ride. River Valley Counseling is a network of clinical professionals who offer therapy and mental services for students, individuals, families, and couples alike. The Wealth Technology Group is comprised of a duo who are honing their line of services, offering advice to women facing challenges after choosing divorce. We are also featuring a food section spotlighting Polish flavor from Janik's Pierogi Cafe, non-alcoholic libations from Hutghis at The Nook, and a list of local places to get your greens this winter. Whether it's your mind, body, soul, or money, January is the month that many people revaluate their position. "Is this where I want to be?" you may ask yourself. If the answer is no, I ask you: Will you grab the reins on life?

AS A MENTAL HEALTH AGENCY, HOW DOES RIVER VALLEY COUNSELING CENTER MEET THE NEEDS OF WESTFIELD? RVCC strives to support the community of Westfield and surrounding towns by providing quality mental health care. Our clinicians are highly trained and continue to hone their skills. We provide therapy services including Outpatient, In-Home, and In-Home Behavioral. We also offer specific support programs for schools or colleges, families and

couples, as well as substance abuse. Those who are looking to get connected with services can make referrals for themselves, family members, or their patients through our website or call our central intake department at (413) 540-1234. DO YOU HAVE BILINGUAL STAFF? ARE YOU LGBTQ+ FRIENDLY? RVCC serves all populations. We provide services to children, adolescents, and adults of all ages. We are able to provide services in multiple languages thanks to our clinicians who are bilingual. Our clinicians provide services to support populations of all races, identities, religion, and ethnic backgrounds – after all, mental health impacts everyone! HOW DOES RVCC SUPPORT LOCAL SCHOOL SYSTEMS AND STUDENTS? We are partnered with a number of local school systems. River Valley Counseling Center provides

outpatient mental health therapy to school district students in Chicopee, Easthampton, Hatfield, Holyoke, and Westfield plus a handful of schools in Amherst, East Longmeadow, Granby, Hadley, South Hadley, and Springfield. Being able to provide services to students during the school day helps break down barriers for those who struggle to schedule an appointment outside of school hours. It also overcomes the obstacle of transportation by being on-site. School based services bridge our clinicians with school personnel to better support the students. HOW CAN LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS TAP INTO THE BENEFITS OF OFFERING EAP TO THEIR EMPLOYEES THROUGH RVCC? Local small business owners can partner with our CONCERN: Employee Assistance Program by contacting the director of those services: Joy Brock at (413) 5342625 or Brock_Joy@HolyokeHealth.com. a great program hosted by RVCC that can help with improvements in working relationships, employee retention, health, and morale. The pandemic has impacted the workforce as well and it is important for employers to be able to support their staff with more resources and benefits. COMMUNITY IS KEY IN RECOVERY. WHAT SUPPORT IS GIVEN TO THOSE STRUGGLING WITH SUBSTANCE USE AND ADDICTION? We were recently awarded a grant from Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) for three of our clinics — including our Westfield site — as part of an effort to support those struggling with substance use and addiction. Our Westfield site is a Community Mental Health Center which means we are able to provide services as an Integrated Healthcare Team. Clients can meet with a clinician, a case manager, a peer recovery coach, and a medical assistant. This helps provide enhanced amenities to those asking for help. This model of care helps us provide programs to anyone in Hampden County (18 or older) who is POC, a veteran, or part of an under-served population. THE RECENT PANDEMIC TRIGGERED A LOCKDOWN THAT CAUSED A SPIKE IN MENTAL HEALTH CASES. ARE YOU CURRENTLY HIRING CLINICIANS TO HELP MEET THIS DEMAND? WHICH ROLES? RVCC is hiring! We are seeking to add more clinicians to our team as well as support staff for numerous different positions. We are always looking to add more team members who are passionate about this work, motivated, and committed. Across all five of our sites, we work as a team to support all of the clients and communities we serve. We also support each other with work/life balance and career development. River Valley Counseling Center makes you feel like family. We offer great benefits for employees such as health, dental, and vision insurance (with great rates!), tuition reimbursement, retention programs, job related trainings/CEUs, pet insurance, and daycare reimbursement to name just a few!

River Valley Counseling Center has the vision to be the best place for care and the best place to work. Find support for your wellbeing or inquire about current employment opportunities by visiting RVCCinc.org.

Roots Cycle OUR PASSION

Fun. Energetic. Motivating. Inspiring. These are all words used by members to describe the Roots Cycle experience and exactly the vision Kari Demarinis had when launching the studio. The Roots brand has been a household name in the area for almost 15 years, with businesses including Roots Gymnastics, Root Learning Center, Roots Fitness and Aquatics, Roots Athletic Center, and most recently Roots Cycle. Operating cutting edge, state of the art facilities and programming, Kari always wanted to offer cycling. And, if you are a fitness enthusiast, you are no stranger to the spin classes that hit the scene over 20 years ago.

Kari knew there was an opportunity to bring a unique experience to the Pioneer Valley, an experience that transcended burning calories and working out. Kari and her staff started doing their research, which included taking cycling classes across the United States. They went from boutique studio to boutique studio, getting a sense of the exact vibe they wanted. It wasn’t long before they found what they were seeking: an instructor in Manhattan who had the right mix of musicality, on-trend programming and enthusiasm. With the guidance of the NYC instructor, Roots began building their cycling studio and creating a training room for their instructors. They were committed to the quality and the high energy found in urban areas, and they knew they needed the right instructors. The Roots Cycle team is made up of individuals with a passion for fitness who believe in the Roots brand and possess the musicality and charisma required to inspire others. Initially, the staff trained for four months; they shadowed a minimum of 8-10 rides per week, learned to find the beat in the music, compiled playlists and choreography for review, and auditioned before master trainers. Roots mission statement is to plant the seeds for healthy bodies and minds, and in March of 2018, Roots Cycle opened for business. When you take a class for the first time, you'll discover that the Roots ride is a physical and emotional experience. Every class showcases a new playlist and new choreography, burning up to 700 calories per 45 minute ride. Not only will you find a fullbody workout that will get you in the best shape of your life, but you will discover the community aspect that keeps you coming back. Anybody can do it! Book your free ride today.

CHARITY DANCEATHON The Western MA Charity DanceAthon is an annual community-rich event that combines the universal appeal of music and dance to create a lively, fun-filled 25-hour dance event. The goal is to raise funds that support the efforts of local causes who in turn help those in need within our community. Festivities include dancing, food, a photo-booth, games, and more! High school and middle school students are welcome to dance the night away with DJ’s spinning fan-fave tunes from dusk to dawn and night again. There will be themed dances such as line dancing and the 2-hour dance-till-you-drop youth session. To fuel the fire under their dancing shoes, volunteers will be on-site cooking up and serving fresh food and snacks. Participants will be fed for free and spectators can patron local food trucks scheduled to be on-site. Spend time in the game room playing ping-pong after the lively opening ceremony or get ready for special guest appearances and fun activities throughout the event. Also, don’t forget to snap a photo and make memories in the new photo-booth! This entertaining event is run and led by students who share the vision to provide help and hope to those in need here in Western MA. By involving youth to engage in the planning,

marketing, and decision making of the annual event, Western MA Charity DanceAthon aids in developing future community leaders. At last year’s inaugural event, dancers raised a show-stopping sum of $16,500 awarded to two charities - KEVS Foundation and Rick's Place. Kev’s Foundation, founded in memory of Kevin J. Major, has a goal to educate and help prevent Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in children and young adults. KEVS Foundation facilitates free youth heart screenings, helps to provide program resources for public access defibrillator programs, and teaches the importance of early bystander CPR/AED education and awareness in our communities. Rick’s Place was opened as a not-for-profit to provide grief support to healing children and their families in memory of Rick Thorpe — a loved husband, father, brother and son who died in Tower Two of the World Trade Center on 9/11. Rick’s Place offers free support to children and teens (5-18 years) plus their families after a loved one has passed. This year Rachel's Table is added to the list! Rachel’s Table is the premier food rescue and distribution program created by the members of the Women’s Philanthropy Division of The Jewish Federation of Western MA in order to address food insecurity within the region. The Western MA Charity DanceAthon 25-hour event will take stage in Westfield at 127 Holyoke Road on February 03 at 7PM and last through February 04 at 8PM. Organizers expect 75-100+ dazzling dancers discoing for an even larger contribution to the charities this year. What are four direct ways you can help make an impact? Sponsor a dancer. Donate as a business. Become a volunteer. Participate as a dancer! You can go to WMCD.org to donate, sponsor, volunteer and/ or register for the event and learn more details. GETTING THROUGH DIVORCE IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY

Gary Thomas and his wife Jay want women who are on the verge of divorce to know that the end of your marriage doesn’t mean the end of your life as you know it – it’s the beginning of a new life. That is what the women who enroll in their Divorce Bootcamp – a 14-week course - learn right away. During the program, Gary, an attorney and mediator who has spent most of his career as a financial advisor, and Jay, a social worker, take women through every aspect of the divorce process. “It’s not about just getting through a divorce; it’s about getting through it in the best possible way and creating a new future for yourself,” said Jay. To that end, she and Gary give Divorce Bootcamp participants a road map - a system for moving forward. “No one’s given them that. We meet so many people who haven’t been given the right information or the longterm perspective,” Gary said.

F IN A N CIA L BU Z Z | FIN ANCE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S

Gary and Jay consider themselves coaches. "We turn dreamers into talented mapmakers. Most people want to get through the divorce process as fast as possible, but that can sometimes lead to wrong choices," Jay advised. "We ask women what they want and what is attainable. We look at what's possible in each situation. If you don't ask, you don't get," added Gary. Although there are guidelines in divorce cases, there is no limitation on what a divorce settlement can be. Divorce is the biggest negotiation people will go through in their lives, and no one is ever prepared for that negotiation. Ending a marriage is also one of the biggest emotional and financial decisions of a person’s life, said the Thomases. “If you are stressed, your intelligence goes down," Gary said, “and Jay is an expert at de-stressing people.” They advise women that it is okay to say no if they don’t have the full picture. The idea for Divorce Bootcamp came from Gary’s experience as a financial advisor at his firm, The Wealth Technology Group. He met a lot of women who he said “got the short end of the stick for a lot of reasons.” He found that it wasn’t only the financial aspect of the divorce that created issues. Divorce Bootcamp is for women who want to be proactive because, as Jay said, “You can’t be passive in your divorce. Our client is someone who knows that there is something better ahead.” Jay and Gary mention that clients must be willing to work. “We ask you some tough things, but they will help in the end. We want our clients

to come from a position of strength. You can put yourself there - it’s a mindset,” coached Jay. “At least half of the women who enroll in Divorce Bootcamp are over 60, and because they have been in long-term marriages, many of them have not had a chance to be their own person,” Gary said. “We help them see that divorce is not the end; it’s the beginning.” Each Divorce Bootcamp program is limited to 10 women and sessions are conducted in-person and on Zoom. Once a month there is a meeting with local clients in the program. “There is a real benefit to share with others who are going through the same thing. It’s very therapeutic to pass on your success with other women who are just starting the process,” Gary reassured. The tagline for Divorce Bootcamp is “Find Your Inner Soldier. Divorce is Tough, But You Can Be Tougher.” For more information, call (413) 739-3511 or email Gary@WealthTechnology.com

Happiness is homemade. At Janik's Pierogi Cafe & Smoothie Bar their mission is to "make consistent quality homemade food with no machinery — old-school style," and that is exactly what they do. All of their pierogis are hand-mashed, hand-rolled, and hand-pinched. Stop by and try this winter! Stepping into Janik’s Pierogi Cafe & Juice Bar felt like coming home. Since I have a Polish background, I am familiar with homemade polish food and that’s exactly what this place offers! Once I walked in, I was greeted with bright smiles and cheery hellos. I tried the Sauerkraut & Kielbasa Pierogis and tasted a Tropical Twist Smoothie - it was unreal; so fresh and delicious! Janik's offers personalized pierogi orders by the count - a snack

Tropical Twist Smoothie mango, pineapple, pear, peach, coconut milk.

Snack Pierogis - 6 sauerkraut & kielbasa pierogis loaded with sour cream, bacon bits and caramelized onions!

of 6, meal of 9, or if you're really hungry go for 12! Another dish is their Polish Plate piled with fresh-made golabek, keilbasa, kapusta, pierogis, and rye bread. Looking for a mouthful? Try zapienkanka! Janik's serves a large, open-faced sandwich on a baguette topped with white mushrooms (shredded when ordered), mozzarella cheese, spices, and toasted until the cheese melts. Even if you're new to Polish food, the long menu list will be sure to have something you like, and the staff will help explain the ingredients if you need. In store, you'll also find traditional art, decor, and merchandise from Poland. I loved the traditional Polish pottery, Poland flags, and t-shirts available for purchase. They even had a homemade cookbook you could buy! It is titled "Authentic Homemade Pierogi Recipes, Tips, Secrets: Full Recipes to all of Babcia's Old

School Pierogi Classics, and to all The Modern Favorites Made at Janik's Pierogi Cafe" and can also be found on Amazon. The ambiance was so comforting and the staff made me feel so welcomed. I loved my experience here at Janik's Pierogi Cafe & Smoothie Bar and I cannot wait to go back. IS CHEESE SA FE? R ESEA RC HIN G RENN E T FOR MEAT A LLERGIES & VE G E TARIAN ISM

EDU CAT ION COR N E R | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

Some people choose to have meals that are cheese based. Why? Meat may cause allergic reactions. A vegetarian eats cheese for protein. Whether vegetarianism, allergies, or simply a lover of all things cheese - you are part of a growing crowd. In 2019, the average American ate over 40 pounds of cheese a year. There are over 2,000 varieties of cheese: one for every taste. Cheese is a nutrient powerhouse, rich in protein, calcium, magnesium , folate, and vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, A, D, and E. Dairy promotes strong bones and teeth, regulates blood pressure and, when choosing low fat, helps with weight management. Conversely, cheese can be high in fat and sodium, making it a food that needs to be limited in the case of heart disease and weight management. A lesser-known problem exists for people allergic to meat and for vegetarians: Rennet. This is what makes liquid milk turn solid. Rennet is made from animal and vegetable sources. Once cheese is made, up to 50% rennet remains. It is hard to discern the source of rennet. In the United States, 90% of our cheeses are made from nonmeat rennet. Manufacturers use FPC (Fermentation Produced Chymosin) rennet, a genetically modified organism (GMO). Rennet is on the GRAS list, meaning it is generally recognized as safe. However, is it safe? That question is yet to be answered. How can you distinguish the type of rennet? Organic cheese legally cannot have FPC rennet but might have animal rennet. Kosher cheese is a safe bet, as meat and dairy are separated for religious reasons. That still leaves hundreds of cheeses unaccounted for in the dairy aisle.Check the ingredient list; these words might mean animal or FPC rennet: • Animal Enzyme • Chymosin • Enzymes • Lipase Enzyme • Microbial Rennet • Rennet • Vegetable Rennet There are plant-based rennet cheeses from local artisanal cheesemakers - Bardwell Farms, Cowgirl Creamery, Cypress Gold Farm and River’s Edge. Some national cheesemakers may offer options. The opposite is true of imported cheeses such as Asiago, Camembert, Cheddar, Feta, Gorgonzola, Gruyere, Havarti, Parmesan/Reggiano, Pecorino, etc. Contact the manufacturer toconfirm the type of rennet used. Cheese is a delicious food that delivers great taste and good nutrition with every mouthful. Making sure that it is made with vegetable and FPC-free rennet will require work on your part, but it is certainly worth the effort. What would your pizza be without cheese?

Most people think a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types, but there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing. A plant-based diet still allows you to consume the carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals and

vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients. There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake; It is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy and meats are said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and help save the planet!

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GIVE UP MEAT ENTIRELY; THERE'S LABELS TO IDENTIFY WHERE YOU FALL IN YOUR PLANT EATING JOURNEY.

SHOP LOCAL

TIPS TO GET STARTED ON YOUR PLANT-BASED JOURNEY: 1. Make small changes to test your comfort level when reducing meat intake. There is a risk of being overwhelmed if you suddenly stop eating meat altogether, and it will be harder to stick to your choice long term. Increase consumption of plant foods you already like. 2. Plant based diet does not mean boring. You can create a variety of dishes including ethnic meals that are meat free and delicious. This is a great time to try new spices to add a punch to your vegetables and add green leafy vegetables to your smoothies. 3. Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part of the plant including the stems, and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets and carrots, and use the stems from spinach. Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber. You are also reducing waste. 4. Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plant-based foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. So, more colors mean more nutrients. Example: Orange foods contain beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A. 5. If you do not eat any animal products, you will need to take a B12 and possibly an iron supplement. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. Low b12 can cause anemia and damage to the nervous system. Some vegan foods are fortified with vitamin b12. 6. A meat free diet does not automatically mean healthy if you replace the meat with highly processed junk food and meat substitutes. You need to eat good, fresh quality fruits, vegetables and grains to get the health benefits that can add years to your life.
