LIFESTYLE LETTER

It’s the happiest time of year! The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season with a couple past-times. A favorite holiday event is decorating cookies with the family. We hope you take some time to try out baker Taylor Trask’s sugar cookie and royal icing recipes! If you need a warm-up, pop over to The Daily Grind in Southwick for a latte flight, and be sure to get some of your holiday shopping done at Designer Consignor. And if you’re looking for a little inspiration, Meyers Brothers Kalicka has 75 years of supporting community to share! While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love.

Lawrence’s diagnosis came in 2016, when she was 66. Five years later, she reached the cancer-free milestone. To celebrate, she penned her memoir to give hope to other women experiencing the same diagnosis. “I’m a lucky woman" can be purchased at leslielawrenceauthor.com.

DESIGNER CONSIGNOR

SERVICECENTERED WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF – YOUR BACKGROUND, FAMILY, ETC. I’m Linda Linard Ligsukis. I’ve been a Westfield resident for 14 years, primarily because I have children here. However, deep down, I’m a Jersey girl with a love for big hair. You could say I was born with mascara in one hand and a can of Aquanet hairspray in the other! I’ve always had a strong sense of fashion.

HOW DID DESIGNER CONSIGNOR GET ITS START? I didn’t set out to start a business; I was just a customer at Designer Consignor. My career was in law firm administration, with photography as a side gig. But in 2015, after leaving the corporate world and contemplating retirement, an unexpected opportunity came my way. The business needed a complete overhaul and was in a less-than-ideal location. However, being a risk-taker, I was confident I could turn it into a thriving shop, which I have.

WHAT PRODUCTS/TYPE OF CONSIGNMENT DO YOU OFFER? We specialize in upscale women’s clothing and accessories, with a touch of home decor. We only accept items in perfect condition that are still in vogue. Surprisingly, around 20% of the items we receive are brand new, complete with tags. Our customer base spans a wide age range, from about 25 to 85, with sizes ranging from XS to 3X. We aim to cater to diverse fashion styles.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS? Certainly, I enjoy offering high-quality, affordable fashion, especially in an area with limited women’s clothing stores. Even more rewarding is the sense of service I feel today. Consignment shopping aligns with sustainability and is increasingly popular. It also aids women in making ends meet in challenging economic times, something I find particularly important. Our

store promotes women supporting women and fosters an interactive shopping experience. I love seeing customers provide feedback to others trying on outfits. It creates a fun and welcoming shopping atmosphere. Our customers are like friends.

WHAT’S UNIQUE ABOUT YOUR STORE? We stand out as the only consignment store in Western MA that carries gowns, particularly for mothers of the bride and black-tie events. What sets us apart is our reputation for hosting consignment shopping bus tours, which I’ve been organizing for the past 8 years and have grown to four trips a year. We also host a few in-store parties each year. This year, one of them was a Barbie-themed party. So, we’re more than just a typical consignment store. 549B College Hwy, Southwick Hours: Wed-Sat 10-5, and Sun 12-4. Consignment by Appointment Only. Call us at 413-569-1368.

MBK Celebrates 75 Years of Community Partnership In an era where businesses often come and go, the milestone of 75 years in operation is a testament to resilience, commitment, and a deep-rooted connection to the local community. Meyers Brothers Kalicka (MBK), an accounting firm based in Western Massachusetts, is celebrating this remarkable achievement with pride. Two of the firm’s partners, James (Jim) Krupienski and Howard Cheney, both Westfield residents, are at the forefront of this celebration, sharing their insights into MBK’s journey, values, and vision for the future.

A STRONG HISTORY OF LOCAL COMMITMENT MBK’s history is interwoven with the community it serves. Established in 1948, MBK has not only provided accounting and financial services but has also been a driving force behind the region’s growth and prosperity. Jim Krupienski reflects, “Being from Westfield, we have a unique perspective on the local landscape. Our roots are deeply embedded here, and we have seen this community evolve over the years. We feel a strong sense of responsibility to contribute to its success.”

Howard Cheney adds, “Our firm is not just about numbers; it’s about people and relationships. We believe in the power of community, and our clients aren’t just clients; they are our neighbors and friends. Our work goes beyond financial statements; it’s about supporting the ambitions of the people and businesses in Western Massachusetts.”

GIVING BACK In addition to offering growth-oriented services to clients, MBK has actively engaged in philanthropic endeavors, extending its impact beyond business. They have a strong conviction in contributing to the community, which is a fundamental aspect of their mission and vision. They consistently take proactive measures to bring their beliefs into action. Howard states, “We succeed when our community succeeds. Our people are service-minded and work hard to impact their community. Many of our professionals serve on boards, volunteer regularly, fundraise, serve as mentors, and coordinate firm-sponsored days of service.” MBK proudly gives back to the community year-round in three ways: monthly charitable initiatives, dress down days for charity every payday, and through corporate sponsorships. Last year, the firm donated to more than 75 local charities. Their dedication to community service is a testament to their values and their aspiration to be a beacon of community support, both in their professional work and their outreach efforts.

Cheney underscores this commitment, saying, “Our clients are not just a part of our business; they are at the heart of it. We view each engagement as an opportunity to make a difference, to help our clients achieve their goals. It’s not just about providing accounting services; it’s about being their trusted advisors and partners in success. I want each client to feel confident in us and to look at us as a great resource, working to make them successful.” Krupienski adds, “We have clients who have been with us for decades. We are proud of these long-standing relationships and the trust our clients have placed in us. It’s a testament to our commitment to providing personalized, quality service that meets their unique needs.”

“We are not content with

THEIR STAFF IS THEIR GREATEST ASSET

As MBK celebrates its 75th anniversary, it does so with a clear vision for the future. The partners emphasize their commitment to becoming an employer of choice in the region. They envision MBK as a place where professionals are not just accountants but are also deeply engaged in the community they serve. Cheney elaborates, “We want to be known for our organizational culture and our commitment to the community. We are setting the bar high, not just for ourselves but for the entire industry.” MBK’s dedication to its employees is evident in its commitment to providing the resources and training necessary to thrive in the ever-evolving field of public accounting. Krupienski says, “We are entering a new era of public accounting, one that demands innovation, adaptability, and a keen understanding of technology and its impact. We want to ensure that our professionals are well-equipped to meet these challenges and provide the highest level of quality service to our Clients.” Howard and Jim went on to share that in an industry often associated with long hours and high stress, MBK stands out by prioritizing the well-being and work-life

the status quo. We aim to

raise the bar continually.

Our clients deserve nothing

less than excellence, and we

are committed to delivering that excellence every day.” - Krupienski

A COMMITMENT TO CLIENTS Central to MBK’s enduring success is its unwavering commitment to its clients. For Krupienski and Cheney, the client relationship is the foundation upon which the firm is built. They have a passion for delivering the highest quality service and forging lasting partnerships with their Clients.

balance of its employees. The firm understands that a healthy worklife balance is essential for employee satisfaction, productivity, and long-term success. They firmly believe that when employees are able to strike a harmonious balance between their professional and personal lives, they are better equipped to deliver top-notch service to clients and contribute positively to the community. They agreed, “It’s not just about the work; it’s about empowering employees to lead fulfilling lives both inside and outside the office.”

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE In its 75 years of operation, MBK has consistently gone above and beyond to meet the needs of its clients. James Krupienski notes, “We take pride in our ability to anticipate our clients’ needs and provide proactive solutions. It’s about being responsive and reliable, ensuring that our clients have the peace of mind that we are always there for them.” MBK’s commitment to its clients extends beyond the traditional scope of accounting services. The firm is dedicated to staying ahead of industry trends and technological advancements to better serve its clients in a rapidly evolving business landscape.

Howard Cheney

As MBK celebrates its 75th anniversary, it does so with a clear vision for the future, setting a higher standard for client service in the industry. Krupienski emphasizes, “We are not content with the status quo. We aim to raise the bar continually. Our clients deserve nothing less than excellence, and we are committed to delivering that excellence every day.” Cheney adds, “We are really focused on maintaining our independence as a firm and business here in Western Mass. We are really focused on making what will be a successful 4th generation of ownership. So you figure Joe Kalicka and Ben Meyers (1st), David Kalicka and Stu Meyers (2nd), Myself and partners (3rd), we are really focused on the next one.” MBK is leveraging this milestone as a springboard for the future, reiterating its commitment to its employees, clients, and the community. The firm’s strong dedication to its roots, values, and community is commendable, serving as a model for businesses everywhere. As they expand and adapt, Meyers Brothers Kalicka is not just an accounting firm; it embodies community, culture, commitment, and client-centric service, guiding the way for the next 75 years and beyond.

With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”

Nutrition Tip of the Month: Research shows probiotics (good bacteria) can help revitalize your gut microbiome. This, in turn, helps with weight loss, boosts your immune system, controls blood sugar, and helps with GI problems. Fermented and pickled foods are rich in probiotics! So, add these probiotics daily: buttermilk, sauerkraut, kimchi, fermented soft cheeses, kefir, kombucha, miso, pickled foods, sourdough bread, tempeh and yogurt
