Unfortunately, setting up shop this way can sometimes create more risk than reward. If a sole proprietor or partnership is sued, non-business assets –including homes, cars, and personal bank accounts – can be in jeopardy. To protect assets, business owners can consider forming a “limited liability” entity. August is About Kids & Pets
It’s my pleasure to introduce myself as the new editor of Westfield City Lifestyle. I am excited about this month’s issue, and all the coming issues that I will have the privilege of putting together for you. Our cover story this month takes us to the great outdoors at the Westfield Sportsman’s Club. If you don’t know about it, read on to learn what they offer. It’s not only exciting to introduce people, places and businesses to our read ers, but it’s also great fun to learn about them as I write and edit their stories. What better month than the kid's issue to share the 25th Anniverary of Amelia Park Children’s Museum - what a treasure for the children in ourAnothercommunity!wonderful place for families to look forward to using is the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail. Without good vision, I would not be writing this letter and you would not be reading it, so we’re happy to put the focus on optometrist, Dr. Amy Camerota, who recently opened Western Mass Eye Care and Eyewear Gallery in Westfield. We hope you enjoy reading this month’s issue and we look forward to hearing your feedback. Enjoy the rest of this summer, and as always, tag us in your social media and we’ll #seeyouaroundtown.

OUR TOWN | EDUCATION westfielduniversitystate ARTICLE BY DR. LINDA THOMPSON Partnerships Draw Synergy, Opportunity 18
Through the years Westfield State University has main tained strong relations with the surrounding community. We consider our university to be an integral part of the fabric of the communities of Western Massachusetts and a defining part of the history of the city of Westfield.
Westfield Public Schools, Holyoke Public Schools and Springfield Public Schools. The program enables students to earn up to 12 college credits by the time they graduate high school, greatly increasing the likelihood that they’ll earn a college degree. We’ve opened our athletic fields to the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association hosting high school baseball, softball, and track from throughout Western Mass. Our athletic fields have also hosted the Babe Ruth Little League World Series. We have or are in the process of developing academic pathway relationships with area community colleges. The Westfield Education to Business Alliance presented the 2022 Career Expo at our Woodward Center in February where close to 700 students from Westfield High Schools participated. The Education to Business Alliance has also tapped our faculty to give talks on government and polit ical science topics. We offer the Woodward Center facili ties to the Hampden County Sheriff’s department to train future correctional officers. In August we will hold a town-gown visioning session with Westfield Mayor Mike McCabe. Our goal will be to come up with ways the city and university can work together to formulate events or other ways we can use the university to engage residents. We envision developing a creative maker space in Westfield square. The space can be dedicated for creative and innovation activity, classroom instruction artist studios and performance space. We look forward to further meetings with the business community to determine their needs. Over the past few years, we have heard the term “skills gap” in a variety of business settings. As an institution of higher education,
Like government, large and small businesses and nonprofit groups, our university is re-evaluating day-to-day operations and determining whether we should stay-thecourse or devise better practices and policies that align with our long-term goals. But as we look inward to evaluate our processes, we intend to also look outside the University to see where partnerships make sense. Our goal is to maintain our current relationships but expand our reach to make Westfield State University a focal point for government, community groups, busi nesses, and non-profits. A simple, obvious example is partnering with our local schools. Westfield Promise, one our signature partnerships, is an early college pro gram offered through Westfield State in partnership with

While the crux of our mission is to educate, we under stand part of that mission is to represent, sustain and participate in our regional economy. We have main tained an open-door policy with state and local elected officials, school officials, business leaders and others to hear concerns and share ideas of where our university can offer resources that mutually benefit our students and the community. Our society is in a unique position. In a short period of time the pandemic has created challenges for many busi nesses. Many organizations are revisiting best practices to determine whether current operational structures are viable in this “new normal.”
“Our goal is to maintain our current relationships but expand our reach to make Westfield State University a focal point for government, community groups, businesses, and non-profits.”
we should be listening when business leaders voice con cerns. To meet the challenges of an uncertain economy, our public universities need to evolve, develop and extend their purpose and their mission to include out side groups in partnerships beneficial to both parties. In weathering difficult times, it helps to know you have friends you can lean on. The next stage of growth at Westfield State University requires strong community engagement and developing close relationships with external constituents. Pursuing this goal through educational innovations, collabora tive partnerships and translational research, the theme,
“Building a Bridge to the Future: Restoring our Health” was chosen to act as a guide to engage the campus community to envision a collective path and direction focused on phys ical, mental, financial, structural and cultural health. This theme gives further definition to the 2019 – 2024 Westfield State University Strategic Plan. Strong, beneficial partner ships are the key to developing solid foundations to ensure long-term success. We are excited for the journey ahead. Primary care optometry. We offer compre hensive eye exams for ages 5 and above, diabetic eye exams, and contact lens fittings, including specialty scleral lens fittings. We also provide ocular disease management, surgical co-man agement, and emergency eye care. Additionally, we offer a full optical gallery, with a wide variety of unique frames, sunglasses, and accessories. My practice focuses on patient education and utilizing the latest technology. Everyone who walks through my door will be treated with kindness, respect, and exceptional eye care.
It’s important to know what type of eyewear will fit your lifestyle. I recommend blue light lenses to my patients who spend hours on a computer each day. UV protection is import ant for patients who are active outdoors, or who do a lot of driving. Appointments are not required to seek advice from our licensed optician who can properly fit and recommend the most appropriate eyewear.

Amy, her husband and their two children live in Westfield, and she is excited to have her practice located in the city where she was born and raised. Oftentimes, these private practices are being sold off to the “big chains” that tend to leave customer experience and the quality of care out of the equation. We are here to fill that void.
WHAT ARE THE LATEST TRENDS IN EYEWEAR? Crystal, or translucent, and nude color frames. Larger and sleek round shapes are still in style. We offer beautiful, unique brands seldom found in our area, including American made lines — State, American Optical, MODO Brooklyn Made, as well as Massachusetts’s own Randolph Engineering – manufacturer of the original Aviator Sunglass. LOCAL LIMELIGHT | HEALTH + WELLNESS26
WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? I enjoyed science and math in school — optometry is a good combination of those. I was a biochemistry major at Western New England College and then I attended The New England College of Optometry in Boston. I’ve worked at leading institutions, including the Lahey Clinic, VA Hospital in Leeds, The Dimock Health Center and with several wellknown regional surgeons including John P. Frangie, M.D. in West Springfield. This experience has allowed me greater comfort with the medical side of optometry. WHAT DON’T PEOPLE REALIZE ABOUT VISION? Many people underestimate the importance of seeing an eye doctor. Regular eye exams are important, because as eye care providers, we are often the first to diagnose conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and even some neurological and autoimmune conditions.

Amelia Park Children’s Museum is one of Westfield’s treasures, a place where imagination is inspired and encouraged. This year marks its 25th anniversary – a fundraising celebration is planned for October 21, 2022. The museum was founded as Discover Westfield Children’s Museum on Elm St. in Westfield. Through hard work and generosity, the museum moved to a brand-new, much larger building in 2008.
Executive Director Ray Radigan shared, “How fortu nate Westfield is to have a children’s museum. It’s really special because there are only about a dozen children’s museums in Massachusetts.”
The museum offers hands-on exhibits and events, daily activities and field trips. It also brings face paint ing, movie nights and free events into the community.
What better place to celebrate a child’s birthday than at the Amelia Park Children’s Museum? There are several themed party options such as Dinosaurs, Bubbles, and Polymers. The latest project for the museum is the Literacy Learning Initiative. This library exhibit features shelves of new books donated by the Lisa Libraries. Additionally, the Davis Foundation, Westfield-based Shurtleff Children’s Services, and the Westfield Cultural Council funded the reading nooks and a free picture book exchange.

Admission to the museum is $8. To make the museum accessible, Ray instituted $2 Thursdays where visitors pay only $2 from 1 to 3 p.m. He hopes to be able to offer $2 admission all day on Thursdays. While much paperwork and planning go into running the museum, Ray said the most rewarding part of his job is the real impact it has on children and families. “It reminds me how meaningful this is.”
Amelia Park Children’s Museum is a nonprofit. Much of its funding comes through contributions from the community and event sponsorships. The museum holds several events during the year. These include the Penguin Plunge, where participants plunge into the icy waters of Hampton Ponds, and the Tea Party in partnership with Westfield on Weekends. Mary Jane McMahon, lead founder of the museum said, “I am honored to be a part of the founding group of the children’s museum in Westfield. Over the past 25 years, the museum has experienced a generation of staff, board members, volunteers and members who have devotedly taken the museum by the hand and guided it along to the safe, creative space it is today for children and their families to experience and enjoy.”

We want to encourage creativity, self-discovery and the uniqueness of each child,” Ray said. The museum also offers opportunities for parents and caregivers to assist the children.

FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY OUTDOOR ADVENTURE | SPORTS + RECREATION ARTICLE BY MAUREEN SULLIVAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH JOSEPHINE PHOTOGRAPHY Sportsman’sWestfield Club 36
In 1949, a group of sportsmen decided to form the Westfield Sportsman’s Club — a place of natural beauty, where they could shoot while keeping the land — nearly 400 acres of woods, including a spring-fed pond — as a nature conservancy. Close to 75 years later, the club continues to thrive as a place where members can fish, practice the sport of archery, or gun sports, or simply take a walk in the woods and over a creek. No hunting is allowed on the land – it is used strictly for sport.

The Westfield Sportsman’s Club has one of the largest field archery courses (28-30 lanes) in Massachusetts, according to Erin Harris, the club’s president. She noted that the archery course and the shooting area are on separate sides of the land. Of note is the club’s Black Powder range – one of only four in Massachusetts that hosts events. A Black Powder gun, explained Erin, is a primitive firearm, a specialty rifle used in MusketOthermatches.shooting competitions held at the club include trap and skeet, handgun competition, and Modern American Rifle Series – precision shooting, low caliber competition. As the club’s first female president, Erin started a shooting club for women, “It’s like a book club, but without the wine or the books,” she quipped.

The popular Youth Fishing Derby is held in April. It is open to the public – anyone under 15 can fish for the day and prizes are awarded. The pond, stocked with trout every year, is also home to bass, Pumpkinseed, bullfrogs and turtles, Erin noted.
The all-volunteer organization is open year-round. The membership year is from October 1- September 30, however memberships are available any time of year. 95 413-562-0771

Furthermore, because it includes five separate raised bridges, the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail will be one of only a handful of elevated rail-to-trail proj ects in the nation. While users are walking, cycling, running, rollerblading, or skateboarding along, vistas of waterways, tobacco fields, and small-city com merce will beckon below. Truly and metaphorically, “It really does transport you,” Carmel Steger, FOCGRT board chair, said. The downtown section will open after the refur bishment of the Elm Street bridge near the District Courthouse. With that, Westfield will have a 3.2-mile ribbon of rail trail stretching from the Southwick line at Shaker Farms Country Club all the way to the beautiful Westfield River Esplanade.
Thanks to the Friends of the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail (FOCGRT), Westfield’s opportunities for recre ation and non-motorized transportation are moving to a higherByLiterally.level. thistime next year, the Columbia Greenway’s downtown segment connecting Main Street and the Twin Bridges section will be complete. With a projected opening date of April 2023, this new phase will link the Whip City’s more urban neighborhoods to nearby greenspaces and safe, auto-free access to friends, errands, eateries, exercise, and worship.

OFF ROAD | LIFE + CULTURE44
Right now, Columbia Greenway Rail Trail users can spin onto the trail at Stop and Shop and pedal 70 miles south to New Haven. Contiguous travel north of the Westfield River, however, is still some years away. First, the town of Southampton hasn’t begun building their rail trail yet, so there’s a gap between Westfield and Easthampton.
Second, phasing the Columbia Greenway through Westfield’s north end means circumvent ing both an active railway and the Massachusetts Turnpike. “Those are two huge, huge obstacles,” Steger said. Still, the feisty FOCGRT group has been working with residents, local and state governments, engineers, and funding sources since 2009. They’ve secured not one bridge but five. Clearly, endurance is sewn into this group’s fiber. “Our Board continues advocating for develop ment of more safe and accessible multiuse paths like the Greenway throughout the city,” Steger said. And, while steps toward this future sometimes seem slow, “There’s so much here to enjoy right now,” she noted. To support the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail, go to columbiagreenway.org
