Tip from Bacon \ Wilson Procrastinating on creating an estate plan is very common. Regardless, one should verify and update beneficiaries on all financial accounts. Many accounts, such as 401(k)s, IRAs, and life insurance, allow you to list both primary beneficiaries and contingent beneficiaries, thereby, avoiding probate on those assets. This is an efficient way to transfer assets. While you may not be ready to establish an estate plan, you should be sure that all of your financial account beneficiaries are up to date. When you are ready to create your plan, we are here to help.

June 2022 PUBLISHER
LIFESTYLE LETTER
June is for the Gentlemen! As spring changes to summer, and we celebrate everything that comes with the warmer weather, we honor all the men in our lives. And it's only fair that after we celebrate women all May, that we do the same for the men all June! Our cover story this issue was incredibly fun to pull together. We shed some light on the booming barber shop industry and highlight a few of our local shops and their passionate owners. And we love introducing new businesses to our readers - enjoy learning more about Jr LaFlamme, his wife Sarah, and their new venture LaFlamme's Auto & Truck Services on Fairfield Avenue in Westfield. If you're wanting to be inspired, look no further than Pastor George Porter's story and his journey from Canada to Southwick Community Episcopal Church during the pandemic. And last, but not least, resident nutrition expert, Jennifer Giffune, shares 11 actionable tips on how to increase metabolic rate, to live happier and healthier! We hope that you get as much out of this month's issue as we do! We are thrilled to wish the fathers in Westfield and Southwick a very Happy Father's Day, and we look forward to hearing your feedback on "It's All About The Gents!” As always, tag us in your social media posts @westfield_city_lifestyle and we'll #seeyouaroundtown!

Temperance's Big Tree for Munger Hill School Update Temperance Freeman, a 2nd grader at Munger Hill School, was covered back in February. Her $800 goal was blown away and she raised over $3,000! We will be planting her tree (its huge!) and revitalizing the school campus by cleaning trash, installing benches, planting more than 30 bushes/shrubs and more! We are anticipating Mayor McCabe, Senator Velis, the GM of WG&E, the Principal and many more to be in attendance for the tree raising.

M E TO B O L I C R AT E 11 WAYS TO BOOST YOUR METABOLISM
37% of adults in the United States are obese. A sluggish metabolism is usually identified as the culprit. Metabolism is the rate that the body burns calories. As you age, your metabolism can drop 25-30%. Not wanting to give in and gain weight, people search for a miracle. There is no quick fix. However, there are actions you can take to ignite your metabolic rate. To get started, check your thyroid- it sets the body’s metabolic rate. If there is a problem, medications can help. A PCP will also look for other health issues that may cause weight gain. Once you pass a physical, get started now boosting your metabolism.

GET OFF THE DIET ROLLERCOASTER
Restrictive diets lead to weight loss, gain, loss, gain. Every time you lose, less comes off. Every time you gain, you reach a new high. Due to restrictions, your body breaks down muscle, leading to lower metabolism and weight gain. It is a viscous cycle and needs to end. Boost your metabolism by choosing balanced, portion-controlled meals.
EAT HEAT
A tablespoon a day of hot pepper can bump up metabolism. The secret is a naturally existing plant chemical, Capsaicin. It ignites brown fat, burning 90 calories a day.
EAT PROBIOTICS START STRENGTH TRAINING
To maintain 1 pound of body muscle, your body burns 6 calories versus a pound of fat requiring only 2 calories. Replace fat with muscle by strength training, boosting metabolism for the next 12-14 hours.
FIDGET
Tapping toes & fingers is known as Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) - a highly effective way to boost metabolism. Burn up to 350 calories a day by NEAT!
EXERCISE
High intensity cardio workouts boost metabolism for up to 36 hours after working out.
EAT REGULARLY
Have a meal or snack every 2- 4 hours. Your metabolic rate slows down between meals. This isn’t a license to overindulge. Make healthy food choices and practice portion control.
SLEEP WELL
Get into REM sleep (dreaming) and your metabolism rises; get 5-7 hours of sleep nightly.
Weight loss significantly improves with probiotics. Daily, eat some yogurt & kefir rich with probiotics and Conjugated Linoleic Acid (a fat burner).
ENJOY A CUP OF TEA
Green tea has a naturally existing plant chemical, Epigallocatechin Gallate, that boosts metabolism. Drink 2 cups of green tea daily and watch your metabolic rate rise.
HYDRATE
Water breaks down calories, so even mild dehydration will slow things down. Drink 64 ounces of water each day.
RELA X!
Stress makes your body release Cortisol, a chemical that slows metabolism. Learn stress relief techniques. Also, a good belly laugh can increase calorie burning for up to 15 minutes after laughing.
Despite the inability to stop aging or change our genetic makeup, it is not a given that your metabolic rate must grind to a halt. There are a great many lifelong actions you can take to bump up your metabolism. What are you waiting for?

LAFLAMME’S AUTO AND TRUCK SERVICES
NOW OP E N | PR OFESSIONAL S E RVI CE S
When a new establishment opens in town, I’m sure you’re just as curious I am. I wonder about the owners, why they decided to pop up shop, and what makes them different. We love supporting new businesses, and we obsess over telling their stories. It was so fun to talk with Jr and Sarah LaFlamme to hear more about Westfield’s newest auto repair shop, LaFlamme’s Auto and Truck Services.
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELVES AND YOUR FAMILY. We are Jr & Sarah LaFlamme. We live in Westfield with our 2 young kids. Sarah is a Westfield native while Jr grew up in nearby Holyoke. Jr has been in the industry for over 20 years.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO AUTO REPAIR? JR: “I began working on cars with my uncle as a kid. I enjoyed it so much that I went to Dean Tech High School in Holyoke to learn more. I then began working at a repair shop as part of the co-op program, and I have been fine tuning my skills ever since.” Owners Sarah and Jr LaFlamme
INNOVATION AND EXPERIENCE PAVE THE WAY
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO TAKE THE PLUNGE AND OPEN LAFLAMME’S AUTO & TRUCK SERVICES? SARAH: “We both had the desire to run our own business for years. Jr was looking to move up to the next level in his career and this felt like the most fitting next step. When we were connected to the retiring owner of Trasko’s Garage, we leapt at the opportunity. We are proud to fulfill our dreams of running a shop and continuing the family-owned history at this location.”

WHAT MAKES LAFLAMME’S UNIQUE? JR: We are a next generation auto repair shop. We utilize technology in every facet to service the client, from contactless communication (text/email communication & invoicing) to the most up-to-date vehicle diagnostic tools.
tout this idea, we truly are an honest repair shop. Jr prides himself on his honesty and treats every customer like they are his family member. He will never perform unnecessary repairs. He has given second opinions to many customers who had received a different diagnosis at other shops. He was able to save these customers hundreds of dollars.
THE FUTURE IS SO VERY BRIGHT! WHAT IS THE VISION YOU SEE FOR YOUR FAMILY AND LAFLAMME’S AUTO REPAIR OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS? JR: We hope to expand the services we offer and add onto the building footprint to service our clients better. SARAH: There is a large labor shortage in the automotive field. We hope to offer co-op learning opportunities to WTA Automotive Technology students, to help fill this expanding need and give the next generation the same chance that Jr was given. BEHIND THE SCENES AT THREE POPULAR SPOTS
On any given day, as you drive down Elm Street in Westfield, you’ll see the hustle and bustle in and out of any one of our town’s barber shops. As a matter of fact, barber shops seem busier than ever before! We know it’s hard to choose exactly which place will work for you and your family, so we thought we’d sit down with a few local owners and hear what gets them excited to open their doors every day!

The Elm Street Barber Shops
TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY. I moved to Westfield from the Berkshires about 10 years ago. Westfield is what Pittsfield used to be in the 90s, with the working class people‘s downtown and small shops. I have a 23-year-old daughter, who is finishing up her Masters, and an 11-year-old son who is at my hip. I have a piece of land in the Berkshires, property in the Carolinas, and I recently just purchased a house here in downtown Westfield. HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE PROFESSION? I originally went to school to be a chef, but I realized that I did not enjoy cooking. I got into sales and I liked to talk. As I was sitting in the chair with Matt Ketchum, also known in the industry as MK The Barber, he told me I should go to school to cut hair. I went back, got my license and the rest is history. WHAT MADE YOU OPEN YOUR OWN BARBERSHOP? My whole life I knew that I was never going to work for somebody else. I’ve been cutting hair with a license for over 10 years. Four of my best friends and I all own barber shops.
James Ahearn Owner, The Barber Parlor 236 Elm Street
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR PROFESSION? A lot of times kids start coming to you, they don’t sit still and they’re super annoying. They become teenagers, start caring about their hair a bit, and want it perfect. The 18 to 20 somethings get girlfriends, go on job interviews, and become adults. I love being part of that process. AS A SIDE NOTE, IF ANYBODY’S INTERESTED IN BECOMING A BARBER, NOW IS THE TIME - THE INDUSTRY IS SHORT-STAFFED!

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE PROFESSION AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING IT? My barbering career started in 2000 at the young age of thirteen in my parent’s garage with two mirrors and a pair of clippers. Looking back, I know the wheels were in motion for my career. Soon, I was cutting hair for the neighborhood kids, family, friends, and I even groomed a few dogs and cats. This experience served me well during my military service to earn a little extra cash cutting the hair of the guys in my unit. After my enlistment, my mom encouraged me to go into the barber profession. She said, “You were born to be a barber!” WHAT MADE YOU OPEN YOUR OWN BARBER SHOP? I have always envisioned myself opening a shop in my hometown of Westfield, and giving back to the community that shaped who I am today. My dream came true with the support of my family and friends. WHAT MAKES YOUR SHOP DIFFERENT? Outside of a unique shop atmosphere, I believe a few things differentiate us. First, five out of our eight barbers have served in the military. Because of this, we offer a military and first responder discount. Also, most of the barbers have children and understand the importance of minimal wait times. Lastly, we take pride in cutting both adults and children, and we work hard to make the barbering experience enjoyable for all age groups.

TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY. My name is Isander Robles but everyone calls me Lex. I’m 47 years old and I’ve owned Gaslight Barbers since 2010. I’m a Master Barber, a Realtor and SMP Artist (Scalp Micro-Pigmentation cosmetic tattoo for hair loss). I create hip hop music and I love sneakers. My wife is a Realtor, as well, and manages other small businesses. I have a son, 3 step daughters, and five grandchildren. HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE PROFESSION AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DOING IT? When I was 12, my mom asked my what I’d like for Christmas. I asked for a pair of clippers, not only because I loved getting haircut, but because I didn’t get them very often. I started buzzing my hair, my brother’s hair, and a couple of our friends’ hair in the neighborhood. Fast forward to when my son was born in ‘96. I went to Barber School and I’ve been cutting hair ever since.

WHAT MADE YOU OPEN YOUR OWN BARBER SHOP? I wanted to own my own business in order to create an atmosphere which was family friendly. WHAT MAKES YOUR SHOP UNIQUE? Our professionalism makes us unique. We have an app to book your appointment with any available barber. We try our best to make sure we get you in the chair at the time you requested. We have a “No Profanity” policy in order to regulate the conversations and keep it PG for everyone. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT IT? I love boosting people’s self esteem by making them look their best. I love cutting hair and, as an artist, I can express my art through a cut. Good conversations, networking and sharing wisdom make it fun. It doesn’t feel like work at all . . .

George Porter Leading by the Power of ‘We’ ARTICLE BY ANDREA BUGBEE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH SARAT It seems fitting that an outdoors-loving Canadian has answered the call for leadership at Southwick’s “Log Cabin” church. In November of 2021, George Porter became Southwick Community Episcopal Church’s in-person spiritual leader, a role that was postponed by more than two years of immigration delays due to COVID-19. “This has always been a church for people who don’t like church or who have been hurt by church,” Denese Gouvin of West Suffield said, standing in SCEC’s cozy, unpretentious sanctuary. Back in 2019, Gouvin and Westfield resident Maggie King were members of a search committee tasked with replacing their former pastor, who had recently retired.
A video interview with Porter (who insists on just being called George) ended the search. “He was the guy,” Gauvin smiled. “He was very warm, and he has this energetic wife, Nancy,” King said. “They just fit right in. They’re not a show. There’s no pretense. They’re just themselves.” “They’re nonjudgmental, full of empathy. Instead of speaking to us, they’re among us. They’ve both been amazing,” said Gouvin. Having spiritual leaders who are “among” rather than “above” this resilient congregation has been particularly healing after COVID’s challenges. Without a priest, SCEC’s core parishioners became a team. As CONTINUED >

such, they brought online worship, visiting priests, parking lot services, weddings, funerals, and mutual support – all during days that were fearful, sometimes grieffilled, and always unpredictable. Through that experience, Gouvin said, “We realized that we are the church. We don’t worship up here. We worship across.” Suitably, George’s services respect his congregation’s hard-won autonomy. Rather than offering a lecture, his approach is more like an engaging college seminar, complete with class participation. Each week, the content is at once intellectual and personal; biblical, historical, and mystical. The underlying theme, however, is always spiritual growth. “He’s so calm and soft-spoken,” said Elaine Stearley of West Suffield. “He’s encouraging. He emphasizes over and over again that God is always there. God gets us through things. All the time, he talks about the love of God and what faith can do for you.” “He’s relatable,” Southwick resident Dawn Toma said. “He’s really down to earth. He talks about real-life issues and he’s very knowledgeable.” With the nation now pushing past pandemic and George and Nancy finally leading SCEC’s team, this Southwick church is resuming its remarkable outreach. “The word ‘Community’ in this church’s name is what we are,” Southwick resident Sue Porter said, naming a few of their larger activities. Pancake breakfasts, game nights, food for hunger programs, ladies’ teas, vacation Bible school, Thanksgiving turkey drives, a Christmas giving tree, and hot meals with warm clothing for those without homes all emphasize this church’s focus on people – both in the community

and in the congregation – as their way of seeing and serving God. “It’s the people,” said Southwick resident Bernadette Johnson when asked about SCEC’s defining strength. “It’s always the people, eh?” Nancy Porter said, her Canadian lingo punctuating the thought. George, concluding his Palm Sunday homily, repeated that very sentiment. “Jesus transforms us to ‘We.’ And that’s the church: ‘We,’” he said, wearing a simple, white shirt rather than vestments. By all accounts, he and Nancy have become part of that ‘We.’ “If you walk in the door here,” George said, “you’re ‘We,’ too.”
