Tip from Bacon \ Wilson Procrastinating on creating an estate plan is very common. Regardless, one should verify and update beneficiaries on all financial accounts. Many accounts, such as 401(k)s, IRAs, and life insurance, allow you to list both primary beneficiaries and contingent beneficiaries, thereby, avoiding probate on those assets. This is an efficient way to transfer assets. While you may not be ready to establish an estate plan, you should be sure that all of your financial account beneficiaries are up to date. When you are ready to create your plan, we are here to help.

LIFESTYLE LETTER

May is for Women!

May 2022 PUBLISHER

Candice Berube | candice.berube@citylifestyle.com 413-519-6752 EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

As a woman-owned business, this month's issue is near and dear to my heart. It is my utmost privilege to honor and feature the women entrepreneurs across our community. We hear from our readers every month, and not only is it the imagery (thank you Hannah Sarat and Gary Tracy!) that keep people coming back, but it's the stories. Speaking of Hannah, we are thrilled to share her story. It's so fun when we can highlight the hard workers of our magazine, and we hope you enjoy learning a bit more about her. If you're looking to patronize women-owned businesses this month, please look no further than downtown. It was our pleasure to share the masterminds behind Be Bella Boutique and Hilltown Chic and their best sellers. And did you know that Rosewood Home & Gifts is celebrating five years? Rosewood helped to revitalize downtown, and we are so grateful that Jillian took the leap! Looking to jump into the real estate market? Lesley Lambert is your gal for a caring and experienced approach. One of Westfield's newest woman-owned businesses is BeauCo Wine, founded by Susan Beaudry. Visit a liquor store near you to sample her unique selection. As the weather gets nicer, many of us are looking at wedding season. The Ranch Golf Club provides a customized and memorable experience to both wedding parties and guests, alike. And last but not least, our cover models are Kaitlin Grenon and Makila McKay, the co-owners of new business Salon Sage+ in Southwick. They were the perfect subject to illustrate all things women-empowerment. Be sure to visit them and experience their spa and wellness center! We hope you enjoy and please reach out and share all the things you love! And, remember to tag us in your local posts @westfield_city_lifestyle, or scan the below QR code, and you could find yourself in our next issue of Westfield City Lifestyle! Yours in health,

Thank You for Supporting Troop 109's Bottle and Can Drive St. Mary's Boy Scout Troop 109 held their annual Bottle and Can Drive on March 5th 2022 at Little River Plaza. Community members donated returnable bottles and cans during the event. This year, they collected 68765 cans and bottles, which is the second largest event they've held. It's been a tough year for scouts and other youth programs, so your support truly meant a lot to them. Proceeds will help buy Troop camping gear and pay for other expenses related to their activities, events, and service projects.

bankESB Commits $50,000 to Westfield Boys & Girls Club Matthew S. Hilltow n Chic

A GIFT-GIVING GUIDE FOR ANY WOMAN

In the Fall of 2020, I quit my job to open my own retail front. I wanted to create a fun store to make people laugh, and find unique gifts and products. I discovered the spot on School Street in October of 2020, when I pulled down the street to go home. I saw the location and I knew it was perfect. After renovating the space, I filled it with items that I wanted to have in my home, or that I would want to give as gifts. Making custom items, stocking hilarious sassy goods, and giving local vendors a space to sell their unique creations, it quickly became an “Etsy Shop” you could actually visit. As the other girls on School Street opened their doors, we came together to support one another, and the community. These amazing women inspired me to create a platform on a bigger scale, so I created the public group on Facebook “Support Your Local Girl Gang Western Mass.” This is a space for everyone to join and support all of the local women-owned businesses in Western Massachusetts. Hilltown Chic is the perfect place to shop for your best friends and family, a fun co-worker, or just for the person that has everything. Even if you just want a fun break in your day (and a good laugh), we are here!

HANNAH JOSEPHINE PHOTOGRAPHY ARTICLE BY MEGAN BELIVEAU PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH JOSEPHINE PHOTOGRAPHY

CREATING MEMORIES ACROSS THE COMMUNITY 24

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | PR OF E S S I ONAL S E RVI CE S

Hannah Sarat exudes passion as she talks about her business, Hannah Josephine Photography: “Professional photography is an investment in your family’s history. Preserving these milestones and unique moments ensures your legacy for future generations. It’s so incredibly rewarding to see a client’s photo framed in their home, used as a social media cover, or sent out as their annual holiday card. Whether it be for social or business reasons, people are constantly looking to put a face to a name, and you deserve an image you’re proud to display.”

As a woman-owned business, Hannah has other women to thank: “It’s a cliched expression, but the foundation of my success was surrounding myself with women who are smarter, more experienced, motivated, positive, and collaborative. I continue to draw on their wisdom, and now I return the favor; community over competition is always my ethos.” Hannah began photographing when CrossFit friends wanted a photographer for competitions and fitness progress. She really took off after her daughter’s birth when a baby boutique owner asked Hannah to exchange photos for dresses. Friends and strangers alike began inquiring about sessions and a business was born! With kids, Hannah found her bread and butter. “I could photograph kids all day,” Hannah says. “They have pure energy that exudes so much joy. It’s infectious, and I never tire of it.” However, Hannah’s passion is photographing nature: “I love to photograph landscapes. If I’m not working, you’ll find me hiking or traveling. There are many unique places to experience with so much natural beauty to appreciate; I want to see it all!” “These are the curated moments that will last forever.” Book your session at hannahjosephine.com. ROSEWOOD HOME & GIFTS

On Wednesday, May 4, Rosewood Home & Gifts at 34 Elm Street in Westfield is celebrating its 5th birthday! Owner Jillian Knapp is looking forward to a party from 4pm - 7pm with cake, shopping, live music from Party of Two, and customer goodie bags. She told us more about the store, her employees, and what’s next.

FIVE YEARS IN WESTFIELD

30

O UR TOWN | SHOPPIN G

TELL US ABOUT ROSEWOOD’S LAST FIVE YEARS. “We’re excited about our anniversary,” Jillian says. “It’s a big milestone. I grew up in Westfield. When I bought the store, I was 23 years old. Coming into Rosewood is what Westfield used to be like in the 60s-80s. Customers appreciate

JIllian, David and Declan

bringing life back into these old buildings. Plus, Westfield rallies around the women-owned businesses here, and that’s encouraging! Take a look at downtown Westfield now – many storefronts are women-owned.” YOU MENTIONED BEING A WOMAN-OWNED BUSINESS. YOU ALSO EMPLOY ALL WOMEN. THAT’S TRULY SIGNIFICANT! “Being a woman in business is a powerful thing in our little town of Westfield! I have 16 female employees from various backgrounds – even some of my former Westfield teachers! I wouldn’t be able to do any of this without them. To have 16 women employees is huge. It’s a big thing for the economy, too. For a few of the women, this job is paying their bills – I am their main income stream – and that’s meaningful to me.” WHAT KINDS OF PRODUCTS ARE AT ROSEWOOD? “From fashion and fragrance to home and nautical, we sell all kinds of products at Rosewood. There’s something for everyone here, and I believe we have a good balance. We are getting new things every week and have a fast turnover. We try not to keep reordering the same things unless it’s a staple like Ms. Piggy! You’d have to see her for yourself. There’s always something new here. And the customers love the free gift wrapping!”

The ever popular Ms. Piggy!

JILLIAN KNAPP

WHAT ARE YOUR MOST POPULAR ITEMS? “Gift items for occasions or holidays are always a hit. We began selling Vera Bradley before the holidays, and people love it! Clothing always does well, especially our ponchos. Seasonal decor is also sought-after, as it’s always changing – for the holidays and the seasons. Nautical items are huge in the summer.” YOU’RE CELEBRATING FIVE YEARS IN WESTFIELD AND COMING UP ON A YEAR IN HAMPDEN. IS THERE A THIRD LOCATION IN STORE FOR ROSEWOOD? “Yes! We opened our second location on Somers Road in Hampden almost a year ago. We hope to expand to a third location soon, so stay tuned!” rosewoodwestfield@gmail.com | 413.642.5365 FaceBook.com/RosewoodWestfield

BEAU CO WINE CRAZY FOR CABS? For many, fond memories conjure images of the people you love sitting around a table, laughing and telling stories, sharing a meal, and enjoying time together. Susan Beaudry recalls those warm gatherings, remembering the enjoyment she gets out of a meal and a great glass of wine. It started as just a passion, but over the years Susan’s passion for wine grew into a business. “I traveled in my corporate career and I had to eat out often,” Susan says. “I was always taken to the client’s nicest restaurant. Every place was beautiful, but I was craving a different type of cuisine; I wanted regional, hole-in-the-wall food. Those authentic experiences changed the game for me.” Once home, Susan would try to recreate the food she ate during the week; she cooked so much that she began hosting dinner parties, and pairing wine with food became a natural addition to the weekly dining events. Soon after, Susan opened her restaurant Main Street Station in Chester.

34

M UST SE E | FOOD + BEV E RAGE

When her daughter, Isabel, became school age, Susan thought, I can’t be at the restaurant all night if Isabel’s gone all day. So, Susan returned to corporate life, directing the annual corporate fund at Tanglewood for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and later joining the Springfield Symphony Orchestra as Executive Director. Once again, Susan’s entrepreneurial spirit began gnawing at her. After six years of leading the Symphony, Susan made the leap and jumped into the wine world with two feet! In the summer of 2021, Susan founded Beau Co Wine. Susan imports wine from around the world to her Westfield facility and distributes it to restaurants and package stores throughout Western Massachusetts. “I wanted to time my departure from the Symphony carefully and ensure that Isabel was OK with me giving this business my all, and she told me to go for it! My early interest was out of fun, developed more professionally through the restaurant, and now more formally as I’ve taken rigorous wine courses. I’m poised to start making a name for Beau Co. Wine.” Susan’s goal is to support local food pantries to make sure every family has the opportunity to celebrate their love and time spent. Her family of entrepreneurs is behind her – “My family loves to drink wine, so they’re very encouraging!” Beau Co Wine is a small, women-owned business, representing other small businesses. “These vineyards are boutique, family-owned, multi-generational operations, and we are putting their wines into small, local establishments. We want to honor the hard work of the people who’ve created business for all of us.” Beau Co Wine’s website beaucowine.com is coming soon! You can reach Susan at beaucowine@gmail.com.

DRINK Tip #1: The wine world can make tasting wine so complicated that it feels intimidating. I can love the wine because of the peppery, spicy palate, but if you’re a riesling drinker, that taste isn’t for you, and who cares! Don’t worry about the notes; you have to enjoy and have fun drinking the wine! Tip #2: Stretch your palate and try something new; you may start to form an appreciation. Think of the wine you're drinking as a piece of art you're viewing – you’re going to get something out of it that’s different from another person. Experience wine openly without judgment.

VINEYARD STORIES Bastide a vineyard in the Côtes du Rhône region of the south of France: Vines planted by the Knights Templar, who were there to protect a religious pilgrimage. Yorkville Cellars, northern California: Longest running organic vineyard in the country. Pinotage grape: Stellenbosch University Professor of South Africa grafted vines, sewed seeds from the grapes that grew, and created a new grape.

THE RANCH

A VENUE FOR EVERY OCCASION

GOLF CLUB

ARTICLE BY ALYSSA RILEY

PA RT Y P LA N N IN G | EV ENT PLANNI NG + S E RVI CE S

Are you searching for the perfect venue for your upcoming wedding? Look no further than The Ranch Golf Club. Located on Sunnyside Road in Southwick, the location previously served as a dairy farm in the early 1900’s. Since its opening in July 2001, The Ranch has become one of the area’s most reputable and upscale public golf courses in the region. Complete with The Pub House restaurant and live music every Thursday night, The Ranch Golf Club not only offers an unforgettable golfing and dining experience, but also a beautiful, rustic setting perfect for your special day. The Ranch showcases a breathtaking country locale with its restored barn, where your wedding will take place. With polished cedar floors, and all original post and beam framing, the barn creates the perfect organic feel while still rendering complete elegance. “We fell in love with the barn and outdoor setting for our wedding,” says Stefanie Centeio, who tied the knot at The Ranch in August 2019. “We knew we wanted a rustic country wedding, and The Ranch fit that aesthetic perfectly,” she said. After inquiring, and ultimately deciding, to make The Ranch your wedding venue, you can expect to attend a complimentary onsite private tasting where you will discuss every detail of your big day. This includes the timeline and execution of your ceremony and reception, your choices for vendors, and any personal touches you would like to include, to make every part of your wedding exactly as you imagined. The Ranch prides itself in creating a stress-free environment for couples throughout the entire planning process by eliminating restrictions for both couples and their vendors. Traditional, banquet-style venues tend to only allow access to the facility two hours prior to the start of the wedding. The Ranch provides access to its facilities, including the Bridal Suite, from nine o’clock in the morning to the very end of your reception. “We work really hard to be extremely accommodating for our couples,” says wedding coordinator and venue manager Angelica Then-Geas. Having been in the wedding planning and event coordinating business for six years, Angelica knows how to bring your vision to life. “One really important part of having your wedding at The Ranch is that we only focus on one wedding per day,” says Angelica. With this type of attention to detail and commitment, you can rest assured your wedding at The Ranch Golf Club will be everything of which you have ever dreamed. theranchgolfclub.com 65 Sunnyside Rd, Southwick 413-569-9333

SALON SAGE+ Salon Sage+ is one of Southwick’s newest businesses. Women-owned by Kaitlin Grenon and Makila McKay, they are always welcoming to new customers. Read ahead and make sure you schedule time to visit them!

SALON SAGE+ IS MORE THAN JUST A HAIR SALON. IT’S A SALON AND WELLNESS CENTER. CAN YOU SHARE THE MISSION BEHIND SALON SAGE+? The mission behind Salon Sage+ is to create a supportive community where all are welcome. A place that encompasses a myriad of holistic services beyond just the beauty side of things... options that support our overall wellness. Physically, mentally, spiritually and so on.

OWNERS KAITLIN GRENON AND MAKILA MCKAY ARE THE BRAIN AND HEART BEHIND THE STORE FRONT. WHAT DID YOU DO IN YOUR PAST LIFE AND HOW DID YOU MEET? We met working at a salon prior to opening our own. Once we met we realized we held similar visions and aspirations for creating our own business, and we knew that collectively we could make a space that checked all of our boxes together! Our creative juices started flowing and it all unfolded from there!

WHEN AND WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO FORGE YOUR OWN PATH AND CREATE THIS HOLISTIC SPACE? We opened our first location in November of 2017. It was our first baby, it was small and

truly a little healing space. We loved that we could determine the energy that came into our environment as that is so important to us. It wasn’t large enough for all we dreamed of, but we trusted that the right time and place would come! That time came in the summer of 2021. We quickly renovated our new location in Southwick, opening the doors in October of 2021.

WHAT CAN WE FIND WHEN WE STEP THROUGH YOUR DOORS? HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHICH VENDORS/PRODUCTS TO SHOWCASE IN YOUR BOUTIQUE AND WELLNESS CENTER? In our space we hope you walk in and instantly feel at home. We want everyone to feel comfortable and cozy, and feel that it’s a healing place for you. Not only do we have a hairstylist for every possible personality/style. We have reiki, massage, IV nutrient therapy, spiritual readings, astrology readings, wedding officiating, vendor shelvings of all local small businesses retail, and more! We love supporting local businesses on our shelves and we try to showcase as many as we can and we’re always open to more!

WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP COMING BACK? I think people keep coming back because this place is about so much more than coming to a hair appointment. We truly have walked people through the hardest days of their life, celebrated the best days of their life, have a

Be Bella Bout ique

AN OUTFIT AND ACCESSORIES FOR ANY OCCASION

I was a stay at home mother of six for 15 years, though I coached highschool gymnastics for 10 plus years part-time. Once all of my kids were school age, I felt the need to do something for myself and other women. I’ve always loved clothes because they not only transform your look, but can change your mood and attitude so you feel confident and beautiful. My time and energy has always directed into my children. I can honestly say, as a stay-at-home mom, I didn’t always feel amazing about myself. Some days I used to have to tell myself “get up, get dressed, and get out,” in order to lift my spirits and make the best of my day. Be Bella Boutique is unique because we hand pick every item to stand out and be a little different from what you might find in local chain stores. Our store provides an intimate setting where you’ll receive a personalized shopping experience. We want our customers to stand out! Our best selling items are our tops and our denim! We carry a vast selection of styles, lengths and fit! We’re so excited because we’ve also just expanded and we are working in cooperation with a shop in Ludlow called It Makes Scents And Outside The Box! They are featuring a selection of our items starting this month!

JOINING FORCES

with Westfield Technical Academy

The Polish National Credit Union (PNCU) and Westfield Technical Academy are joining forces. Students from their Business Technology Program, Meredith Ploof (pictured second from left) and Alice Anipko (pictured second from right) were selected to participate in a paid co-op at the PNCU Westfield location. This co-op allows students the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained in the classroom to real life business scenarios. Cindy Houle, retired PNCU Westfield Branch Manager (pictured far right) presented the opportunity to Karen Tyburski, Westfield Technical Academy Business Technology Instructor (pictured far left), who provided the curriculum and oversight. Both seniors will be continuing their higher education and have a place at PNCU to continue their career paths whlie doing so.

Our relationship with Stefan Czaporowski, Superintendent of Schools, has also allowed PNCU to deepen our relationship with the Westfield Public School system. Part of our objective as a Credit Union is to provide literacy programs and training to pupils so they understand the importance of budgeting, credit scores and finances. We encourage students to contact us to explore more internship opportunities. www.pncu.com | 866.592.7628

SHOWCASING A PASSION FOR THE COMMUNITY AND CLIENTS ARTICLE BY LESLEY LAMBERT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEENA MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY

R EA LTOR

™

LESLIE LAMBERT Local resident and business owner, Lesley Lambert, loves her community! A Real Estate Agent with Park Square Realty, she exudes passion for her career and brings a wealth of knowledge with her thirty four years in the business. Read on to learn more about this influential woman.

TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF. I am a lifelong resident of Southwick and Westfield and I love it here. First and foremost, I am the mother to two beautiful young women, Shaunessey and Ryan. They are the best thing I have ever accomplished. Beyond that, I am a dancer, a writer, a gardener and an involved member of the community. Currently I serve as President-Elect for the Kiwanis Club of Westfield and on the board of directors for the Friends of the Westfield Senior Center.

WHY DID YOU GET INTO REAL ESTATE? My mother was a broker/owner of Classics Real Estate, a small boutique brokerage in Westfield in the 80’s and 90’s. I grew up helping her and got my real estate license in 1988 to help pay my way through college. One thing led to another and I never left the business. My mother remains the best role model and how I learned ethics and responsibility.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT REAL ESTATE? I love that you can make it what you want. No two days are the same and there is no limit besides yourself. You get to help people with a huge life decision; knowing that they trust you is paramount. This is a career that you can be who you want to be and you can be who your clients need you to be.

Lesley and daughter Ryan

WHAT DIFFERENTIATES YOU AS A REAL ESTATE AGENT? A few things: first...I have been here through a lot of changes: 1988 to now has taught me resilience and a skill set that not everyone has. Also, I am an empath. I feel for my clients; their needs, desires, and wants become mine while we work together. I want the best for everyone. Also, I am technologically-savvy and bring the best marketing to my clients.

WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT THE FUTURE? I am always excited to see what my daughters will bring, but additionally, I am excited to continue living my best life in Westfield. I always say that I love to travel, but I can’t wait to get home. Westfield is a community that I feel is vibrant and is my HOME!
