February 2022 PUBLISHER
Candice Berube | candice.berube@citylifestyle.com 413-519-6752 EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
It's the season of light and love. This Valentines Day, love local. Celebrate the arts and your loved ones by gifting them creations by local artists. In this issue you will find a variety of handmade items from local artisans. It is important that we support our local small businesses and give them some love this season too. We all know someone who is a last minute shopper or we are the last minute shopper. Gift-ology is the perfect spot for thoughtful last minute gifts! Are you looking for a sweet dessert this year? Sweets by Mahlia is a chocolatier who designs the perfect chocolate-covered strawberries and chocolate hearts for any occasion. They make the best gifts - I know I love them! Maybe this Valentine's Day you want to go out? Grab a beer with your other half locally at Tin Bridge Brewing. Have you seen the mural down at the Westfield River Walk? Turn the pages to find an up close glimpse of the mural highlighting artwork designed by Shannon Chiba and created by local children and artists. Are you bored of the way your living room looks? Make your home cozy this winter and design on a dollar with Sarah Pouliot from Blackbird Home Interiors. We have so many amazing different businesses featured in this issue, it is so important to shop local! This month we celebrate the arts and the love we have for others. Tell your loved ones how much they mean to you and hug them from afar. Lastly, don't forget to tag us @westfield_lifestyle in all of your Westfield and Southwick social media posts. You might just find your content or photos featured in our next issue! Stay warm,

Spearheaded by Lesley Lambert, this was the seventh time she hosted. "This event wouldn't be possible without the entire community pitching in," Lambert said. Each year the event provides over 100 bags filled with essential items to residents of the Samaritan Inn. Lambert felt it was important to note that over half of this year's volunteers were teenagers.

COMMUNITY MURAL
Under the Esplanade in Westfield, in collaboration with the mural club at the Westfield Boys & Girls Club and community painters, Artworks of Westfield created the Westfield is Fantastic Community Mural late last summer. This mural embodies the magic of community spirit and revitalization, showcasing fantasy creatures and landscapes created by local children and artists. Designed by Shannon Chiba, this river walk gallery was the follow up to the Heroes Are Everywhere community mural completed in 2020 at Hedges & Taylor. Grab the kids or a friend and be sure to check out this undiscovered city gem!

Sarah Pouliot, Proprietor of Blackbird Home Interiors
DESIGNING ON A DOLLAR Sarah Pouliot envisions creating a sanctuary for you. She wants you to arrive home to a space that is without the stresses of the world—an environment that is inviting, comforting, and relaxing. Sarah’s new company, Blackbird Home Interiors, can make your space a better version of itself. Blackbird is a full-service design company that takes projects from concept to completion. In March 2021, Sarah thought she would create the company as a side

job after encouragement from family and friends, but there’s been no downtime since! From studs to finish, Sarah, with demolition help from her husband, completes all kinds of interior design work. Sarah does this with any budget, and stresses “living space that is beautiful does not have to be expensive.” “Your project will be the only thing on my mind.” Sarah knows the importance of loving your space, and being able to come

home happy and relaxed. Before the time of Pinterest, with little to spend and big dreams, Sarah completed a small flip on her first home, learning as she refinished furniture and put in flooring. In her second home, a foreclosure, she revamped the basement, added a bathroom, and tore down walls. Family and friends began asking for her input on redesigns, so Sarah started to post her advice and work on social media. After an infuriated friend was on month seven of a bathroom renovation, Sarah realized the need for reliable contractors. She prides Blackbird on sequential efficiency and only takes on one project at a time.
When do you know that you need a designer? “There is this notion that only rich people can afford a designer; people view it as a luxury. But everyone deserves to feel happy in their home, and we can make it happen with any budget.” Sarah says an interior designer is needed at the beginning of a project, especially a new build. “Hire us in the beginning; this will save you time, money, and angst. So many people renovate a space, and then it doesn’t work for them. Our homes are our sanctuary. You should love walking into to it. We are here to think of the big picture. I want to help the look, feel, and function of your spaces!” Sarah is fully licensed and insured. She can be reached at: www.blackbirdhomeinteriors.com, blackbird.homeinteriors@gmail.com, 413-437-3277
Sarah and Joe Pouliot with their children Iz and Josiah.
HOW DOES IT WORK? 1
First, contact Sarah to start a discussion about needs, budget, and style. Sarah will view your space and see for herself why it’s not working.
2
Next, Sarah designs a mood board for the space and will discuss and receive feedback from you.
3
Then, you may choose to continue with a design consult, where you would decide how to implement the vision.
4
After that, you may decide to have Sarah make the vision become reality.
5
Finally, you come home to a space that feels the way you want it to feel—like home.

We started with fairly traditional styles on the menu. We soon noticed that once we got a bit more creative with the beers, we had something special. Everything kind of took off from there.” Joe Cocchi To Joe and Nick Cocchi, the Tin Bridge, an old railroad bridge, was their spot in Westfield to hang out as kids. Now, others may recognize the name Tin Bridge for something else—delicious beer. Tin Bridge Brewing Company is known for making craft beer that you can’t find anywhere else. Joe Cocchi shares, “Traditional is great, but it didn’t quite get the business to where we wanted it to be after we first opened. We started with fairly traditional styles on the menu. We soon noticed that once we got a bit more creative with the beers, we had something special. Everything kind of took off from there.” Technically it takes just four ingredients to brew beer, but after experimenting and tweaking for years, Joe and Nick can tell you there’s more to it than that. Aside from a bit of chemistry and practicing proper protocol, choosing the best ingredients is at the top of their list; using only high-quality ingredients and real fruit purees, regardless of higher cost, is a priority at the brewery. Tin Bridge often has rotating draft and can menus of 14 beers, featuring at least four styles with diverse flavor profiles. Fruited ales, fruited sours, stouts, and New England IPAs are always available. Their fruit beers, made with real fruit puree, feature flavors ranging from cheesecake to pie, to marshmallow and even Oreo. These flagship offerings stand out, and also appeal to the “non-beer drinker.” The fruited sours are soured just enough for maximum drinkability. Tin Bridge’s stouts are typically Imperial style, ranging from 8-12% ABV. Their New England IPAs are juicy, hazy, and often utilize heavy hop additions, without bitterness. “We opened our doors in 2017. At the time, there weren’t many breweries around town, so we were excited to join the business community and bring something fun to Westfield. Another aspect that we take pride in is our family’s involvement. CONTINUED >

Joe and Nick offer a few tips for the home-brewer: The “rules” of brewing always apply, but don’t be too rigid. Think outside of the box! Plan for expenses; yes, good ingredients are more expensive, but they are important and you will see results. Quality materials equal a superior product. We were introduced to and shown how to appreciate craft beer by our Dad. Our family and friends supported the home brewing years; those same people are the ones who helped us rebuild this place from the ground up. Now, most of those people work here as bartenders, barbacks, and managers. It’s amazing.” Joe and Nick began as home brewers, but when equipment started taking up every corner of every room, they needed more space for their beer and their fans; so, they found a garage in Agawam and created a mock brewery. They “joked” about opening a real brewery, and three years after brewing in the garage, they couldn’t pass up the opportunity in the space of an old restaurant known as Point’s East. “We gutted the place—added the garage, opened the ceiling, put in flooring, new plumbing, electric, all of it. The build-out took over a year while we were working other jobs full-time,” Joe said of the process. “Nick was working the corporate grind, and I was making music and touring with my band, Within the Ruins. We saw the potential of the space, but it was a mess—ground-up work, really. Regardless, we moved forward and came every day after work to get the space up to par. It was a big risk, but I’m glad I convinced Nick to stand by and partner up.” Tin Bridge Brewing Company is a rustic/industrial, family-friendly place to drink unique beers, enjoy great food trucks, and hang out. The space has a “Welcome to the Family” feel, with communal seating and a laid-back atmosphere. You’ll catch customers playing board games, arcade games, or shuffleboard at the hand-built table. Visit Joe and Nick behind the bar and enjoy their beer and food trucks Thursday-Sunday at 487 E Main Street in Westfield. Tin Bridge is also open Monday-Wednesday for Metal Mondays, comedy, live music, and private functions. www.tinbridgebrewingco.com.

Gift-ology Gifts for Every Occasion… Even the Last Minute! ARTICLE BY MEGAN BELIVEAU PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH JOSEPHINE PHOTOGRAPHY
Whether you forgot your spouse’s birthday present or need a congratulatory gift, Gift-ology is your one-stop shop for all gifts! With a prime location on Springfield Road in Westfield, you can grab your groceries, run your errands, and stop for the gift you need for that night’s party. From clothing and accessories to home decor and celebratory gifts, Gift-ology has a special gift for everybody. Tiffany Hannoush opened her first Gift-ology store in 2008 at the Eastfield Mall. After a quick year of success and wanting something she could grow as her sons went off to preschool, two more locations opened in

Longmeadow, MA, and Buffalo, NY. Before long, Tiffany was running 15 Gift-ology stores! Now, Tiffany’s main focus is on one store—Westfield. “We opened in Westfield in June 2020. It was tough leaving Longmeadow after 11 years, but it was such a worthwhile move!” Tiffany can now focus on the market for the Westfield area and see to what the customers respond in order to bring in new items. Gift-ology is always listening to their customers’ suggestions; Tiffany’s main goal is to learn what customers want and how to improve the store, in order to keep growing. Their main gift recipients are women ages 18-80.

So, how are things going since moving to Westfield? Tiffany lights up as she speaks about her new customers. “Westfield is incredible; the customers are amazing. I can’t tell you how many times a customer comes in and says, ‘Wow, Westfield needed this!’ We were welcomed with open arms. This store is a true labor of love, and the customers make it so worthwhile.” Impressively, Gift-ology works with 125 brands, 110 of which are small businesses. Popular gifts at the store include Pandora, Dune Jewelry, handmade signs, wedding and engagement gifts, birthday presents, baby supplies, and accessories. However, the items you find at Giftology you cannot find everywhere; you will find a very diverse range of product offerings, and items are even customizable and personalized. The recipient will feel like extra effort went into choosing the perfect gift. Gift-ology truly has a little bit of everything, for everyone, at every price point. Tiffany and her women-led staff are here to help you choose the best gift. “Most customers don’t really know what they’re looking for when they come into the store,” she says. “So my staff, the ‘Gift-ologists,’ learn about the customer and recipient, to help them find a perfect, unique, and thoughtful gift in no time at all.” Gift-ology’s customer service, and the fact that 90% of their products are made in the United States, sets them apart from others. “We never have an issue with supply or stocking the shelves because we buy locally and sell locally.” Additionally, Giftology offers two premium services—gift wrapping with Tiffany’s gorgeous signature paper, and interior design help. Tiffany wants her customers excited about the gifts they are giving. She recalls a customer who chose a Westfield 01085 pillow for her niece that now lives in New York City; the pillow seems custom-ordered and well thought out, and the recipient loves having a piece of home.
“Westfield is incredible; the customers are amazing. I can’t tell you how many times a customer comes in and says, ‘Wow, Westfield needed this!’”
What’s coming for Gift-ology? Although the store is revamped every day and for every season, you can expect to see a focus on interior design, including furniture and lighting, and additional accessory items, like new jewelry, coming in the future. Tiffany and her staff also look forward to hosting more monthly events, including a tutorial for hand-painting wine glasses and creating the perfect charcuterie board. “We want to respect everyone’s space in the market; relationships are important. We are working hard to fit in and see what we can offer that other businesses are not,” Tiffany says of her ideas for growth and expansion. “We are a small business that wants to support other small businesses.” Stop by Tiffany’s shop at 99 Springfield Road, Monday-Saturday, or visit their website at giftology.com to shop all products.
